The Shortest Day of 2011

We had the pleasure of attending a wedding yesterday (22nd December 2011) in one of our 1928 white vintage Citroen’s ‘Harriet’ – The wedding was between Rachel and James which was held at Notley Tythe Barn between Long Crendon and Chearsley (near Thame).

What a fantastic day and such fabulous weather for the time of year. Yesterday was the shortest day of 2011, otherwise known as ‘the winter solstice’ we had bright sunshine and hardly a cloud to be seen for most of the day and with temperatures easily reaching double figures – it really does not get much better than this in December !

The Winter Solstice is when, in the northern hemisphere, the sun remains the closest to the horizon due to the earth’s 23.5º ‘tilt’, it is when we get the shortest day and the longest night (in the North Pole there is no sun for 3 months during the winter – poor Santa) !

The winter solstice is the turning point of the year as from now on the days will get gradually longer until the summer solstice on the 20th June 2012, by which time we will be well in to our summer 2012 weddings.

Our genuine 1920’s Vintage cars have an all important ‘modern’ accessory for winter weddings – they are fitted with a good heater, this allows us to attend weddings, in comfort, all year round.

This time last year ‘Harriet’ was up to her running boards in snow – despite their age our vintage cars are very capable on today’s roads - see my blog ‘Nice day for a white wedding’ but who would have thought that it would be warm enough for the guests to go outside after the ceremony at Notley Barn in December this year

……….. and what a fantastic sunset too !

As the season is well under way we are happy to report all of our cars are performing well and ready for a busy summer.

Alice, our newest vintage Citroen has been wowing wedding parties for nearly a year now:

Harriet, our first white vintage wedding car, is adjusting well to sharing the garage with Alice, her twin sister!

Dorothy remains an ideal choice if you aren't looking for a white car - the burgundy is a popular colour and makes an ideal backdrop for photos.

Our two modern Jaguar XJ Executives Ruby and Catherine are looking forward to their busiest summer so far - ever popular as additional cars for carrying additional guests, as well as getting the groom to the ceremony on time!

It's been a long winter for our only convertible - Charlotte, our stunning Triumph Roadster... fortunately with the weather improving she'll soon be out showing off to all the wedding guests!

Spring is in the air

Well this weekend was the first of our spring weddings and what a fantastic day, admittedly the 19th March is just slightly ahead of the official start of Spring (The official first day of Spring being either the 20th or 21st March dependant upon which calendar you look at). Anyway .....

Our 3 Vintage cars were out together on a run to the Tythe Barn at Launton, the sun was out and hardly a cloud in the sky, now let’s hope that the weather this weekend sets precedence for continuing good weather for the rest of the wedding season.

A Wedding Car for the Groom

Just a thought ………… If the Bride arrives in style in a nice chauffeur-driven wedding car, then why not the groom too ? Here at Wedding-Car.co.uk we have cars suitable for both the Bride and the Groom.

Why not consider this? ……. As the Groom needs to be at the church ahead of the Bride, if a second car were booked with us for the Bridesmaids, then invariably there is time for the second car to collect the Groom too, even visit a local hostelry for some dutch-courage (just the one) and then we will make sure he gets there on-time !

We do not charge any extra for taking the Groom if you were to book a second car such as our V8 Long Wheel Base Jaguar, or our 1949 Triumph Roadster (like the Bergerac Car) as the second car providing the Groom’s requirements fit your itinerary, then that’s fine with us.

We offer some great prices on the Jaguars when used as second cars, which include multi-trips (where time permits).

We like to support Bletchley Park as it is such a lovely venue and is one of the few wedding fairs we attend as we prefer to pass the savings onto you, our customers, with lower priced cars.

Nice day for a White Wedding !

Or is it ....... Snow Glorious Snow.

Now at Wedding-Car it is true to say that we enjoy our work, in fact, it is a requirement for our chauffeurs that they enjoy weddings and driving the vintage cars, however, today we had even more fun than usual :-)

Today was officially the snowiest wedding we have attended ever and today it was our White Vintage Citroen Harriet's turn to play in the snow.

We operate our cars (apart from the Triumph Roadster as this is an open top car) all year round, in order to allow this, the 3 vintage cars have an all important non 1920's accessory ........ a heater ! - So what happens when the weather gets really bad such as today's blizzard? well we study the weather radar like a hawk and if perceived necessary (as we did today) we discreetly escort the vintage vehicles with a modern 4 wheel drive ....... your wedding day is important, so we try where possible to plan for all eventualities.

Snow and more snow

Back to today, we started with some light snow with a forecast for moderate snow before we were due back, so the 4 wheel drive, shovel, rope and full survival kit were taken just-in-case.

Whilst on this occasion the 4 wheel drive did not have to intervene at all, there was comfort for all to know that help was at hand should it have been required.

Harriet performed faultlessly and did not need any help at all - the thin wheels sink in to the snow which grip far better than a modern car.

Rachel and Lawrence were chauffeured without a problem ........ Ian did stop Harriet a couple of times during the journey, for clearance of snow from the flat front windscreen and to top up the Bride and Groom's Champagne (we did not need any ice for the Champagne today). In all, they had an enjoyable and memorable journey on their wedding day from Bletchley to Woburn Sands in our 82 year old car.

Today's weather was testament to the capability of the cars - last year it was Dorothy our 1927 Vintage (see my blog dated Feb 2009) and so-far this winter it was our 1928 vintage Citroen Harriet's turn for a drive in extreme conditions.

Congratulations go to Rachel and Lawrence, we wish you both the very best for the future.

Harriet's chauffeur ...... Ian, who as always, had the utmost faith in the car, even relaxed and made some snowballs as he watched over Harriet whilst the ceremony was underway.

Harriet is now safely back in her fully insulated, heated and dehumidified garage, it won't take long to dry her out and polish her back up to standard - A job for tomorrow, I will soon have her all ready for her next outing just after Christmas ......... more snow for the next wedding ? .........who knows, time will tell but at least we know that both Dorothy and Harriet are now fully snow-tested !

One thing we know for sure is that there is no control over the weather, what-ever it is ........ it is, so, our advice to all Bride's and Groom's is to always make the most of the special day, no matter what the weather brings ..... one small tip, put good weather at the top of the wedding wish list.

Sometimes, as today's weather has proved, bad weather can be great fun and make it a day to remember !

Wedding – Car helps Father Christmas !

On occasion we offer our car(s) to be used for charity events, especially when it is for a good cause, well, this year the annual Santa run around the village of Newton Longville was such an event.

We had the opportunity to pull Santa’s Sleigh (and Rudolf) around on a ‘float’ stopping at various locations to allow the children in the village (and their parents) to tell Santa what they would like for Christmas. Just–Shoot–Me photography came along and took many pictures of the kids with Santa ……. If your child had their photo taken with Santa then you can view the photos at http://www.just-shoot-me.co.uk/ (you will need a password which you would have been given on the day).

We pulled the ‘sleigh’ with ‘Catherine’ our Snow-white Jaguar, as we have done so for a few years running now and once again there was a collection for a worthy cause, this year it was for ‘Help for Heroes’.

H4H was founded in 2007 and they are a non-political and non-critical charity ……….. as they say on their website they are unable to prevent our soldiers from being wounded but they can help them to get better.

Introducing Alice - our third vintage wedding car

We are very excited to launch Alice, our freshly restored third vintage wedding car.
Alice joins our other two vintage Citroens, Harriet and Dorothy, and is already wowing guests at her first weddings.

Like Harriet and Dorothy, Alice has had a full interior and exterior restoration with some essential upgrades mechanically to enable her to keep up on today's roads and to be reliable enough to be a wedding car.

Choosing your perfect wedding car

Part 1 - Types of wedding car
In the first part of our series we will be looking at the various types of cars available for your wedding.

Vintage Wedding Cars
These are popular for brides and grooms looking to make a grand entrance on the day. Early production cars were introduced in the late 1800's in the 'Veteran' and 'Brass' Era. However it wasn't until the Vintage period (1919 - 1930) that cars started to introduce features which now commonplace - heating, assisted brakes and steering all first appeared during this time.

When they are well maintained, vintage cars are often just as reliable as their modern counterparts so very unlikely to let you down on the day.

We currently own two Vintage Citroens, one white (Harriet) and one burgundy (Dorothy) and they both have exemplary track records which have led to many great wedding photos and satisfied customers.

Classic Wedding Cars
In the UK a car must have been built before 1973 to class as a 'classic'. There are classic cars of all shapes, sizes and styles to suit all tastes.

Bentleys are a firm wedding favourite with couples so we are pleased to be able to feature one in our 2+ car package offer. For couples looking for a stunning car with a difference then our Triumph Roadster fits perfectly.

As with the vintage cars above, when well maintained, classic cars are normally reliable and very able to keep up with modern cars. Both vintage and classic wedding cars can help to make your wedding unique by adding a traditional charm and they also make great photo opportunities.

If you've got a number of people to move about on the big day then our classic wedding cars also make great second or third vehicles.

Modern Wedding Cars
Again the popular wedding cars include vehicles made by Jaguar, Bentley, Mercedes and even Royles Royces. We find that our two modern wedding cars are ideal when you don't necessarily need the extravagance of a vintage or classic car. They also make great second or third vehicles and provide comfortable onward travel.

We currently own two Jaguar XJs in colours to match the Vintage Citroens - this means they can be booked individually or any combination to meet your needs.

Other ways to get there
We mainly specialise in providing the best vintage and classic wedding cars possible - of course there are many other ways to get to the wedding on time!

Watch out for vintage or classic effect wedding cars - these are often built on modern car bodies (Minis are popular for this - http://bit.ly/c1kpCi). All our cars are genuine vintage or classic cars, fully restored rather than 'kit' cars...

We're not really into Limos but have come across some fun other ways to travel - ice skating, boating, sledging and parachuting - unfortunately we can't help with any of these though... although the parachuting sounds tempting!

That's a brief introduction to the various types of wedding car. In part 2 we'll go into more detail about what to check on any wedding car that you choose.

Hi everyone and welcome to June's Your Questions Answered! This month the questions are from Val down in Windsor (yes we'll happily provide wedding cars in Windsor - see our large coverage area here)

How fast do the cars go?
How fast do you want to go on your wedding day :-)
The cars can travel at sensible speeds (i.e. up to 45 mph), however, as they are about as aerodynamic as a 'brick' it is not advisable to try to push them any further. The ideal speed to transport the Bride and Groom in complete comfort and without spilling the champagne is about 35 - 40 mph. Of course it's much slower than that during those key moments of the wedding day!

What are the cars like to drive compared to modern day cars?
The simple answer to this is ......... FUN !
Although the controls can sometimes differ slightly to modern cars (in the Triumph Roadster you change gear using a stalk on the steering wheel!) our chauffeurs are all experienced with driving each of our cars. This means they know how to get the best out of each vehicle to give you a smooth ride. Ultimately the fun of driving the cars means we can enjoy being part of a very special day.

I notice on your weather guarantee that we can arrange to meet up for another photoshoot after our honeymoon if bad weather means we are unable to get the photos we wanted or enjoy the cars to the full. Would we be able to choose from any of your cars for this?
As yet we haven't needed to arrange a second photoshoot because everyone has enjoyed the cars to the full on the day whatever the weather! If we did need to arrange one you could choose one or more of the cars that you had on the wedding day as long as they were available - any excuse to drive the cars !

Hi again and welcome to May's Your Questions Answered... this month's questions are from Lauren from Milton Keynes and they are mainly about prices and booking:

I can't seem to find prices for booking your cars on the website... why's this and how do I find them?
Back when we started out we used a fixed price for all weddings which we really liked as it made everything very simple. The trouble was that didn't allow for any flexibility and it didn't seem right to us that a local short wedding would pay the same as one further away.

We soon changed our approach to give every wedding a tailor made quote to reflect the particular requirements of the day. This means we'll always give you our best price.

Our booking page has all the information you need, plus a super-quick form which gives us all the information we need to send a price through fast.

How long will it take to book my wedding cars?
Once you've completed the form on our booking page we'll reply with our availability and prices (normally on the same day as your enquiry). If you're happy then we include a link through to our online booking form and once this is completed the deposit would be due. You can pay the deposit by bank transfer, cheque or cash whichever is easiest.

That's it - you're date would be confirmed in 3 easy steps - check availability, complete booking form and pay deposit. We've worked hard to keep it as simple as possible to save you the stress and hassle!

Why do you give the cars names?
We love to give the cars some personality and have found the names to be very popular to help people differentiate between them. Harriet, Dorothy, Ruby, Charlotte, Catherine are the names we've got so far!

I've thought of a great name... something like Beatrice?
Great work - email them through to us and we'll choose our faves... who knows, we might even name one of our cars using your ideas...!

Cinderella Ball Auction for Cancer Research UK

We're taking part in a Cinderella Ball Auction in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The local Arcana Group of Salons have organised this event for this fantastic worthwhile cause and we are only too happy to be supporting it by helping with one of the auction items:

Family ticket to the MK Theatre production of Cinderella starring Anthea Turner, Bobby Davro & Ben Adams. You will be collected from a Milton Keynes address by a chauffeur driven car provided by us then returned after the performance.

Harriet's first summer as a vintage wedding car

Wow - what a summer - we hope you have had as much fun as we have... Once again it's flown past with a flurry of confetti and champagne, so apologies for the blog silence!

Harriet, our second Vintage Citroen has completed more weddings than we imagined since she was introduced just over 3 months ago. After a thorough restoration we were confident she would meet our high quality and reliability standards. We are pleased to report that there were no problems throughout the summer.

We have been thrilled at the reactions Harriet has had from brides and guests, and are currently sorting through lots of new images and testimonials to include on our new website (coming soon!)

Dorothy (our other Vintage Citroen), the Jaguar XJ and Triumph Roadster have also continued to dazzle guests on many occasions throughout the summer.

Thanks to all our great summer couples - we wish you all the best for the future. Also thanks to Laura at Just-Shoot-Me photography for the pictures!

We are excited to announce that our second Vintage Citroen is now ready for bookings!

Given the rarity of this model of British-built Vintage Citroens, we were lucky to get the opportunity to purchase another.

We have now completed a full restoration, both inside and out, so we are confident that she will live up to our high quality and reliability standards. In fact, she has already completed her first wedding and accrued many bookings.
