Two of AfriForum’s branches in the Garden Route joined forces over the past two weeks to assist communities that were severely affected by the recent devastating storms. The AfriForum branches in Knysna and George undertook several emergency relief and clean-up projects to support residents in need after heavy flooding and strong winds caused extensive damage in parts of the Southern Cape.

With the help of AfriForum’s emergency fund and in cooperation with Kaapse Forum, the George branch provided approximately R50 000 worth of food to around 1 000 children in the Blanco area of George. These children were temporarily displaced from, among others, residences and places of safety after the storms struck the area and disrupted the electricity supply. AfriForum’s emergency fund is specifically used to support communities during times of crisis.

“Projects such as these are only made possible through donations from the community. Every contribution enables AfriForum to undertake even more projects that make a tangible difference in the lives of disaster victims,” says Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Southern Cape.

AfriForum’s Knysna neighbourhood watch team cut up and removed fallen trees from roads in Rexford and Simola in Knysna, as well as in Sedgefield. At the request of the Garden Route District Municipality, the neighbourhood watch team also assisted in George by removing trees in the areas of Geelhoutboom, Heather Park, Heatherlands and Bodorp.

“AfriForum will continue working to strengthen communities against the impact of devastating disasters. We therefore encourage the public to get involved with AfriForum or to donate to the emergency fund so that we can help the next community in need,” Erasmus concludes.

AfriForum’s emergency fund enables the civil rights organisation to respond immediately and effectively when communities are struck by disasters such as veld fires or floods. Unlike the government, which often fails to make disaster relief funds available timeously and transparently, AfriForum ensures that every cent is used responsibly and effectively where it is needed most.

Members of the public who would like to contribute to AfriForum’s emergency fund can make a donation at:

A Food Safety and Hygiene Training session was recently facilitated for the food handlers of Meals on Wheels Community Services (MOWCS). MOWCS serves some of the most vulnerable members of the community, including the elderly, the frail, and children. These individuals are at a higher risk of complications from foodborne illnesses. “This makes food safety not merely a regulatory requirement, but a direct expression of care and dignity for every person who receives a meal,” said Nonkosi Somwahla, Environmental Health Practitioner (EHPs) at the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM).

As a non-profit organisation involved in the preparation and serving of food, MOWCS is required to hold a valid Certificate of Acceptability (COA) and ensure that all food handlers receive adequate training in Food Safety and Hygiene.

The training was presented by GRDM’s EHPs. The aim was to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to handle, prepare, and serve food safely, while ensuring compliance with South African food safety legislation.

The session covered key areas of food safety relevant to the day-to-day work of the MOWCS team, including the identification and control of food safety hazards, safe food handling practices, personal hygiene standards emphasise the importance of washing hands, and the maintenance of clean, pest-free premises. Participants engaged actively throughout the session, which was well received by all in attendance.

All attendees who participated in the Food Safety and Hygiene Training received Certificates of Attendance at the end of the session in recognition of their participation and commitment to improving food safety practices.

The training was well received, with positive feedback from Meals on Wheels leadership. The Regional Director of Meals on Wheels, Mr Jeremy Vlotman, shared the following feedback with the EHP, Nonkosi Somwahla: “Thank you for a professional and informative presentation. We have received positive feedback thus far; our next step is to ensure implementation.”

The EHP’s looks forward to supporting Meals on Wheels Community Services through this process, including follow-up visits and ongoing guidance as needed.

Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) from Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) conducted 17 joint blitz operations in Albertinia this month, whereby the the team inspected spaza shops operating within the area. The operation was conducted in collaboration with representatives of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Albertinia, the Department of Home Affairs and Hessequa Municipality’s Municipal Police Services.

The inspections primarily focused on:

Compliance with Regulation 638 (structural and hygiene requirements).

Adherence to Labelling Regulation 146, including “best before,” “sell by,” and “use by” dates.

Accurate ingredient labelling.

Identification of damaged or non-compliant products.

“The aim of the operation was not only to enforce health and legal standards, but also to raise awareness among spaza shop owners regarding regulatory requirements and the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards to safeguard public health,” said Haemish Herwels, Chief: Municipal Health (GRDM Sub-Office, Hessequa).

According to Cllr Jobieth Hoogbaard, MMC for Community Services: “This collaboration also enabled Home Affairs, SAPS and Hessequa Municipality’s Municipal Police Services to effectively perform their regulatory duties”. Haemish Herwels added that the GRDM further appreciates the ongoing support received from these departments in ensuring the success of initiatives aimed at protecting the health and safety of communities.

The GRDM also appreciates the support received from members of the public through the lodging of complaints. While officials are not always present on the ground, the information provided by the public plays a vital role in assisting the GRDM to identify areas of concern and respond accordingly.

To report businesses in the Hessequa region that are operating without a Certificate of Acceptability, or who do not comply with standards, contact the Chief for Municipal Health (Hessequa), Haemish Herwels on 083 678 6545 or e-mail haemish@gardenroute.gov.za.

A region that until recently was seen as a peripheral market in the gaming industry is rapidly turning into one of the most dynamic hubs in the global gaming market. The gamer audience in sub-Saharan Africa grew from 77 million people in 2015 to 186 million in 2021. Behind this surge are two key factors: the mass adoption of smartphones and the Covid-19 pandemic, which pushed millions of people to look for entertainment without leaving home. The region’s largest market remains South Africa.

From internet cafés and consoles to smartphones “in your pocket”

Just ten years ago, a typical entry point into gaming culture in Africa looked the same: internet cafés, bulky consoles, foreign projects in English, and an almost exclusively young male audience. Choice was limited, and access cost money and time.

Today the picture is radically different. The smartphone has replaced both the café and the console, letting people launch their favorite games anywhere. The audience has become far more diverse, and the barrier to entry has fallen to little more than the cost of mobile data.

Localization, African-style, and new devices as demand drivers

Modern games are increasingly featuring African characters, visual elements that reflect Africa’s culture, and support for local languages. This localization process turns the product from imported entertainment into something that feels truly “local.”

At the same time, next-generation multifunction gaming consoles are growing in popularity as they enter the African market and expand options for players who prefer a bigger screen to a phone.

How the pandemic gave the market a boost

Covid-19 acted as a catalyst for African gaming. Lockdowns and travel restrictions pushed millions of people toward digital entertainment, and the influx of new players affected every segment of the market, from mobile apps to paid content. The statistics confirm the scale of this shift.

Who plays the most: a country-by-country breakdown

The figures come from a 2021 study commissioned by the analytics company Newzoo and the South African gaming platform Carry1st. The geography covers sub-Saharan Africa.

The total audience in sub-Saharan Africa is 186 million gamers (up from 77 million in 2015).

South Africa leads with 24 million players, and 40% of the population plays video games. The country’s games market is gradually on track to overtake the film and music segments.

Ghana ranks second with 27% of the population.

Nigeria follows with 23%.

Kenya and Ethiopia round out the top five with 22% and 13%, respectively.

Investment to fuel growth: the Carry1st case

Expectations of further explosive growth are backed by concrete investment. In May 2020, the startup Carry1st raised $2.5 million in a round led by CRE Venture Capital. The funds are aimed at supporting publishing projects and releasing games across Africa.

Asset ownership mechanics and blockchain in Kenya

Developers are adding “ownership” elements to games: the ability to have your own characters and in-game assets. The tracking and transfer of these assets rely on blockchain technologies.

Kenya, with its growing share of tech-savvy youth, has become a natural base for projects at the intersection of gaming and fintech. The Kenyan social impact studio Usiku Games Africa is developing blockchain gaming and is exploring models where players could potentially benefit from the industry boom.

Playing in gaming cafés remains popular

At the same time, a significant share of Kenyan gamers cannot afford their own gaming PC or console. Average income in the country remains low, and for many young people the only way to run FIFA or Counter-Strike on high-end hardware is to visit a gaming café. That is why in Nairobi and other major cities, the network of such cafés is growing faster than sales of home devices. Café owners compete for visitors by offering no-deposit bonuses—free hours of play time for newcomers, points-based loyalty programs, various no-deposit bonuses, birthday gifts, and tournaments with prizes. This model lowers the barrier to entry into gaming for those who are not yet ready to spend a significant share of their budget on entertainment, while also helping cafés grow their audience.

As a result, the gaming café format with bonus programs naturally complements mobile gaming, creating an accessible ecosystem for Kenyan youth where they can play on quality equipment without major investment.

The company’s founder and CEO Jay Shapiro describes the approach as follows: “We are exploring ways of embedding financial mechanisms into games, where people can earn or spend more transparently.” At the same time, he emphasizes how vulnerable households are: “The reality is that even with a job and some small savings, everything can be wiped out by a pandemic, a climate disaster, or illness in the family.”

Millions of dollars and digital currencies

The industry brings African countries millions of dollars every year. Of the 186 million gamers, 63 million pay for games, and forecasts point to some of the highest growth rates in the world amid the spread of digital currencies in the region.

According to Newswagg’s, 38% of the 41.9 million gamers worldwide who own crypto assets are millennials aged 21 to 38. Africa and the Middle East together account for 5.9 million gamers with cryptocurrency.

A market that will keep growing

Further expansion will be fueled by the availability of smartphones and new devices, investment in game publishing, as well as blockchain and digital currencies. The demographic factor also matters: by 2050, Africa is expected to see a significant increase in the share of young people in the population (by up to 50%, by some estimates), which will substantially expand the industry’s potential audience.

Recent extreme weather events in the Southern Cape have raised serious concern among residents, infrastructure managers, and environmental practitioners.

GREF Convener, Cobus Meiring, requested Knysna-based climate systems expert, Peter du Toit, from FutureClimateIQ to shed some light on why the Southern Cape increasingly experience such extreme weather events.

“The region’s recent experience of intense rainfall, flooding, and an unprecedented period of gale force winds is consistent with evolving atmospheric and oceanic conditions affecting southern Africa”, says Du Toit.

Du Toit explains that the Southern Cape sits at the intersection of several dynamic weather systems. The region is influenced by mid-latitude frontal systems moving in from the South Atlantic, as well as moisture-laden air masses driven by warmer ocean temperatures. When these systems interact under unstable atmospheric conditions, they can generate highly concentrated storm events with strong wind fields and intense precipitation over short periods.

One of the key contributing factors highlighted is the increasing variability in large-scale climate drivers such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. These oscillations influence rainfall distribution and storm tracks across southern Africa, often intensifying weather extremes when atmospheric conditions align unfavourably.

The recent gale force wind event, described by local authorities as unprecedented in its sustained intensity and spatial reach, is linked to a deep low-pressure system that intensified rapidly offshore before making landfall along the Southern Cape coastline. This created a strong pressure gradient, resulting in damaging wind speeds across exposed coastal and inland areas.

Du Toit further notes that while these large-scale climate systems are natural, their behaviour is being modified by a warming global climate. Warmer sea surface temperatures increase atmospheric moisture and energy availability, which can enhance storm development and severity.

However, he cautions that climate drivers alone do not fully explain the scale of impacts experienced on the ground. Local factors such as land-use change, degraded catchments, and invasive alien vegetation significantly amplify run-off, windthrow, and infrastructure vulnerability during extreme events.

The combination of these global and local influences is making the Southern Cape increasingly susceptible to high-impact weather events, requiring improved understanding, preparedness, and long-term resilience planning.

Thembalethu residents celebrated a long‑awaited milestone on Sunday, 17 May 2026, as GO GEORGE officially launched Route 11 Thembalethu – Garden Route Mall. As the third bus route to serve this community, it marks a major step forward in expanding public transport access.

The route was officially activated by an early‑morning ride from the Jonga Terminus, joined by Executive Mayor of the Garden Route District Municipality, Alderman Marais Kruger, municipal officials and invited guests.

At the Garden Route Mall terminus, Mayor Kruger officially declared the route operational and described the launch as an important moment for mobility and economic access for the residents of Thembalethu. “Today is more than the launch of a new route — it is a step towards greater dignity, opportunity and connection for residents of Thembalethu. They have waited patiently for this direct route, and I am proud that the George Municipality together with the Western Cape Mobility Department can finally deliver this service,” he said.

Reflecting on the milestone, Western Cape Minister of Mobility, MEC Isaac Sileku, highlighted how Route 11 strengthens the province’s commitment to accessible, resident centred mobility. “The GO GEORGE network continues to demonstrate what can be achieved when government, operators and communities work together. Route 11 is another example of public transport development that responds directly to the needs of residents,” he said. “A direct route to the Mall opens doors — to a more dignified way to get to work, access services, and reach new opportunities. I look forward to meeting the commuters who will benefit from this new link. Their experiences guide our decisions, and their needs shape the future of mobility in George.”

A direct connection shaped by community need

Route 11 provides a seamless link between Thembalethu and the Garden Route Mall precinct, home to several major shopping centres and employment hubs. Until now, many residents relied on multi‑transfer journeys via the N2 bridge and Route 16. The new route eliminates that detour entirely.

With Route 11 in place, passengers can also transfer to other routes at the Mall to reach Rosemoor, Loerie Park, Eden, Bergsig, George East, and the CBD, including several schools and major businesses en route. This shift is expected to ease congestion on Route 15 (Parkdene–CBD) and Route 16 (Parkdene–Garden Route Mall), as Thembalethu passengers who previously transferred to these routes can now travel directly to the Mall and further into town.

Supporting passengers with information and digital tools

In the weeks leading up to the launch, the GO GEORGE communication team engaged with Thembalethu residents travelling to the Mall, explaining the new route and helping both current and future users understand their travel options.

Passengers now also have access to GoBot, the GO GEORGE chat assistant, which provides instant help with route planning and system information. Users can chat to GoBot on WhatsApp by saving 078 090 6168, or by scanning the QR codes displayed on pole collars at bus stops.

Additionally, the GO GEORGE website (www.gogeorge.org.za) offers user-friendly tools designed to help passengers plan trips and explore the network.

The 21-year-old from Mossel Bay ended day one at three-under-par alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler and five other players in one of the tightest opening leaderboards seen at a major championship in decades.

Playing at the demanding Aronimink Golf Club, Potgieter mixed powerful driving with mature course management to produce the first sub-70 round of his young major career. The long-hitting South African, already regarded as one of the PGA Tour’s biggest drivers, handled the difficult greens and firm conditions with impressive calm.

Potgieter’s performance places him firmly in contention for a maiden major title and continues a rapid rise in international golf. The Pretoria-born golfer won his first PGA Tour title at the 2025 Rocket Classic and was named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year after a breakthrough season.

South African golf enjoyed a strong opening day overall. Garrick Higgo carded a 69 despite receiving a two-shot penalty for arriving late to his tee time, while other South Africans battled difficult scoring conditions at Aronimink.

The packed leaderboard also featured former major champions and leading contenders including Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka within striking distance heading into the second round. Meanwhile, reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy struggled to a four-over-par 74.

Potgieter’s emergence continues South Africa’s proud golfing tradition, with local fans hopeful he can emulate legends such as Gary Player, who famously won the PGA Championship at Aronimink in 1962.

With three rounds remaining, the young South African has already delivered one of the standout stories of the tournament and could become one of the sport’s next global stars.

The AfriForum Mossel Bay Branch Annual Hybrid Golf Tournament will take place on 26 June 2026 and is expected to attract 100 players competing in a 4-ball Betterball Stableford format. Organisers say the event will introduce a new dimension to competitive golf by splitting scoring evenly between virtual and physical play.

Half of each team’s points will be earned through indoor simulator sessions using Trackman iO technology at participating venues, while the remaining 50% will be decided during outdoor play at Mossel Bay Golf Club.

Indoor qualifying rounds will be hosted between 1 and 20 June at participating facilities including Quadrant Golf, Bat Hill Royale and Digital Golf.

According to organisers, players must complete both the simulator and on-course components to qualify for the final standings. Teams may participate indoors in groups of two or four.

Anne-Marie Storm Buys of AfriForum Mossel Bay Branch said the tournament aims to merge innovation with community participation.

“This event represents innovation in community sport. We are proud to introduce a format that not only challenges players in new ways but also brings people together through a shared passion for golf,” she said.

Event coordinator AP Botes of Quadrant Golf said the hybrid structure is designed to create a level playing field while improving scoring accuracy and enhancing the overall player experience.

Organisers also indicated that the outdoor event at Mossel Bay Golf Club will feature unexpected challenges and entertainment elements, setting it apart from a conventional golf day.

The tournament further highlights Mossel Bay’s growing reputation as a tourism and sporting destination, while reinforcing community engagement through recreational events. Sponsors, spectators and media representatives have been invited to participate in what is being positioned as a premium networking and lifestyle sporting experience.

The Greater Knysna municipal area has experienced persistent adverse weather conditions including heavy rainfall, strong winds, flooding and widespread infrastructure disruptions since Tuesday, 5 May 2026. The severe weather, driven by successive cold fronts and cut-off low pressure systems affecting the Western Cape and Garden Route, has had a significant impact on communities, municipal services and critical infrastructure. Approximately 1100mm of rain has fallen over the past week across the entire greater Knysna area.

Knysna Municipality’s Joint Operations Centre (JOC) was activated at the onset of the severe weather conditions and continues to coordinate emergency response operations together with disaster management agencies, emergency services, humanitarian organisations and other stakeholders.

Executive Mayor Thando Matika confirmed that, at present, approximately 317 residents have been displaced due to flooding and storm-related damage to homes and infrastructure. “Displaced residents are temporarily housed in our community halls,” he said. “Temporary assistance including the fulfilment of urgent needs like hot meals, blankets, dry clothing and other humanitarian support is being coordinated. We have assisted affected communities in flood-prone areas through the distribution of sandbags and gunplast sheeting to help reduce further damage to homes and properties.”

The municipality also acknowledges the tragic loss of the life of Ms Lauren Fredericks when a tree uprooted and fell on her vehicle. “We extend our deepest condolences to her husband, former Knysna Firefighter Franklin Fredericks, her extended family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” said Matika. “We remain fully committed to protecting lives, restoring services and supporting affected communities.

“This has been one of the most challenging weather events we have faced in recent years,” he continued. “Our thoughts remain with every resident who has suffered loss, damage or displacement. We thank all emergency personnel, municipal teams, volunteers, humanitarian organisations, churches and residents who continue to work tirelessly under extremely difficult conditions.”

The ongoing rainfall and flooding have severely impacted several municipal services across the greater Knysna municipal area.

Water supply systems continue to be affected due to both localised electricity outages and interruptions to Eskom supply infrastructure. “Storm damage to electrical infrastructure has resulted in power outages in several areas, directly impacting pump stations, reservoirs and water and wastewater treatment operations. Residents are requested to use water sparingly during this period, as ongoing electricity outages continue to affect pumping operations, reservoir management and water distribution across several areas. Existing water restrictions remain in place,” he continued. “Unlike many municipalities, Knysna does not have an on-river dam and remains heavily reliant on pumping water directly from our source systems, making electrical stability critical to maintaining water supply.”

Roads and stormwater infrastructure have also sustained extensive damage. Numerous roads have experienced flooding, erosion and debris accumulation while fallen trees obstructed certain routes. Municipal teams, together with emergency services and contractors, are actively clearing roads, filling potholes on key arterial routes where possible, and assessing infrastructure damage.

The municipality’s sewerage infrastructure and wastewater treatment systems have come under immense pressure due to the significant volumes of stormwater entering the sewer network. This excessive inflow has affected treatment processes and has had an impact on the Knysna Estuary system. Technical teams continue to monitor the situation closely while mitigation measures are being implemented where possible.

The erf situated at the corner of Vigilance and George Drives has been made available as a temporary dumping site strictly for fallen trees and branches only. No building rubble, household waste or any other material may be disposed of at the site. Persons found abusing this temporary arrangement will face prosecution.

“Refuse collection services have been disrupted due to the temporary closure of the regional landfill site and ongoing weather-related operational challenges,” Matika said. “While mop-up operations have commenced where conditions allow, we caution that assessments are still ongoing and that the full extent and cost of the damage remain unknown at this stage.”

Further adverse weather conditions are forecast for parts of the Western Cape and Garden Route over the coming days, and residents are urged to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel or risks where possible.

Matika called on residents to continue supporting one another during this difficult period. “Knysna has always shown resilience in times of crisis. We once again appeal to residents to look out for their neighbours, support vulnerable members of the community where possible, and continue acting responsibly. The safety of our communities remains our highest priority,” he concluded.

Residents are reminded to:

stay safe and avoid unnecessary risks;

adhere to law enforcement and cooperate fully with emergency personnel and municipal officials;

avoid flooded roads, low-lying bridges and areas with fallen electrical infrastructure or trees; and

be cautious in areas prone to landslides, embankment failures and falling trees, as the prolonged rainfall has resulted in heavily saturated soil conditions.

Contact the JOC immediately in the event of any serious emergency at 044 302 8911 / WhatsApp 060 998 6969 for Knysna or 044 343 2900 / WhatsApp 060 998 7019 for Sedgefield and surrounds.

The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM), through the Garden Route Skills Mecca (GRSM), officially launched the GRDM/TETA Rural Development Driver’s Licence Project on Friday, 8 May 2026.

The event, held at the GRDM Council Chambers, signalled the commencement of Phase 1 focusing on the George Municipal area. This phase includes the first 80 beneficiaries of the 560 participants set to benefit from this district-wide programme.

The project is coordinated by the GRSM and funded by the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA). This initiative marks a significant investment in the socio-economic mobility of residents across the district.

While welcoming the group at the event, GRDM Municipal Manager, Monde Stratu, said: “As a District Municipality, we ensure that the partnerships that we are developing with various stakeholders e.g. TETA, Victoria Driving Schools and many others, are maintained and that the funding allocated for these programmes is used for the purpose for which it was granted and intended”. Stratu further referred to the shortage of certain skills within the economy and emphasised that, “this programme is an indication that our training interventions are aligned with the needs of the economy”.

Thembani Loliwe, GRDM Program Manager of the Garden Route Skills Mecca (GRSM) explained that the program originated through the GRSM – a product of the Knysna fire disaster, which created economic havoc across the district in 2017 and nearly destroyed the district’s main economic contributors, namely the Tourism and Hospitality industries. He said: “This disaster resulted in many job losses, but by turning it into an opportunity through the GRSM, R135 million have so far been invested in the program, already benefiting 2 760 youth district-wide”.

Elton Olivier represented Victoria Driving School at the event. The driving school has been appointed as the service provider to ensure high-quality training and high pass rates for all learners. Olivier inspired participants with his personal achievements and encouraged them to prioritise this programme for the betterment of their lives. He highlighted: “You were selected to be part of this opportunity to obtain your learner’s- and drivers’ licences and to equip yourselves to secure employment or better job opportunities”.

TETA’s Education, Development and Training Practitioner (EDTP), Malcolm Alexander, reaffirmed the funder’s commitment to rural development. He emphasised that professional driving skills are critical to the sustainability of the South African transport industry. Alexander also highlighted the excellent working relations between TETA and GRDM, before emphasising how opportunities like these do not often become available. Addressing the participants, Alexander said: “You have this one opportunity – stay focused and achieve it. We want to see you climbing the ladder of success – and having a driving licence is a significant step-up towards achieving that success”.

Lungiswa Bini and Liyema Magajana, both participants in the program, extending words of appreciation to the GRDM and stakeholders for their strong partnership in rolling out this program. Although Bini acknowledged the difficulties unemployed youth face in obtaining a driver’s licence, Magajana commended the GRDM and stakeholders saying that “being part of this program not only help us to gain important skills, but it also opens doors for employment and a brighter future”. On behalf of the group, he undertook “to make the most of this opportunity and use the knowledge and skills responsibly”. In addition, Liyema said: “Many of us would not have been able to afford this opportunity on our own, and for that reason we are immensely grateful”. In conclusion he thanked the TETA, facilitators, instructors, and everyone involved in making the programme a reality.

The Garden Route District Municipality extends its gratitude to TETA for the funding and to all local municipal partners for their cooperation in making this life-changing project a reality.

Cronje Beukes will go into this weekend’s Madibaz XCO at Mandela University’s Saasveld campus as red-hot favourite following his dominant performance at the inaugural Garden Route Giro in April.

In only his third gravel race, the 21-year-old cycling sensation won five of the Giro’s six stages to break the tape more than eight minutes ahead of the runner-up.

What made his showing even more remarkable was that he broke his leg on the Outeniqua Pass a year ago, necessitating a difficult period of rehabilitation.

Fresh off his incredible comeback, Beukes now turns his attention to Sunday’s XCO, a race he has won four times across the sprog and sub-junior boys categories.

“I did almost every one when I was still in school. It’s always been great to race on these courses around Saasveld,” the George South Primary and Outeniqua High alumnus said.

He began racing Eden XCO Series events at the tender age of 11 and progressed quickly through the ranks. In 2023, he claimed the South African junior marathon title as an 18-year-old.

Beukes’s palmarès includes eighth at this year’s Attakwas Extreme, an event between Oudtshoorn and Groot Brak via a historical ox-wagon trail rated one of the toughest in the country.

He is also a category runner-up in the Cape Epic this year following his second place overall in the open men’s division alongside teammate Jean-Pierre du Plessis.

Now he is ready to test his form in the shortest and most technical of off-road cycling disciplines.

“I’m not too sure what to expect from the course or the competition, especially with the weather looking like it could be wet,” he said.

On the women’s side, a notable name is former professional Robyn de Groot.

At the peak of her powers, the former Olympian represented South Africa at four UCI Marathon World Championships, placing third in 2019 and fourth in 2020.

She claimed the National XCM title several times and achieved numerous podiums at the Epic.

Her last outing at the Madibaz event ended in a comfortable victory in 2017.

Since its inception the year before, the Madibaz XCO has become a cornerstone of the regional cycling calendar.

It attracts riders from as young as sub-nippers (7 to 8 years) to grand masters (over 60).

Entrants can expect a route comprising flowing singletrack, berms and a bridge.

The rock garden is back for the first time in several years on the 4.1km course, which serves up a testing 50m of ascent every lap. The 1.1km course has a more modest elevation gain.
