The Single Seaters, Sports Cars and Sports Prototypes (class C) category at the Simola Hillclimb dishes up an intriguing mix of thoroughbred racing cars competing for the King of the Hill title. This year’s 16th edition promises plenty of action, as two formidable previous winners go head-to-head in near-identical machinery for the first time and several new competitors join the fray, all of which will contribute to one of the largest and most competitive fields to date.

All eyes will be on the King of the Hill battle between 2024 champion Robert Wolk and six-time winner and current Simola Hillclimb record-holder Andre Bezuidenhout. This is the first time they will be vying for victory in similar cars, having battled it out in vastly different single-seaters over the years.

Bezuidenhout is set to return in his 2007 Gould GR55 – the specialised hillclimb single-seater that he powered to the record-breaking run of 34.161 seconds in 2022. He achieved an average speed over the 1.9 km Simola Hill course of 200.228 km/h from a standing start, reinforcing this event’s status as the world’s fastest hillclimb. Bezuidenhout scored his sixth consecutive win the following year, and his fifth with the Gould, after kicking off his run of success in 2017 with the 1989 Dallara F189 Formula 1 car.

Unfortunately, the Gould was sidelined just before the 2024 Simola Hillclimb due to engine trouble during pre-event testing, and Bezuidenhout had to sit out again last year as the engine was still being rebuilt in the UK. Accordingly, he is relishing the opportunity to get back in the King of the Hill action.

“Team Perfect Circle and I are looking forward to returning for the 2026 Simola Hillclimb. We have been absent from the King of the Hill category for the past two years following significant engine damage to the Gould during preparations for 2024. The car’s engine has since been fully rebuilt by McLaren in England, and I’m pleased to report that early indications are very positive,” Bezuidenhout says. “Preparations for Simola are now well underway, and the car is looking strong. We have also introduced a new livery and are working closely with our UK engineering team to extract maximum performance.

“The Gould, a 2006-era Formula One-derived car, represents a serious return to competition for us, and I am particularly looking forward to the challenge alongside Robbie Wolk, who also faced setbacks last year,” Bezuidenhout says.

Indeed, this year Bezuidenhout will have his fiercest challenge yet for top honours, as it will be the first time he goes up against Wolk in a 2005 version of the Gould GR55. The Investchem team acquired the car from the UK just before last year’s event – albeit in boxes and far from ready to race. The WCT Engineering team worked wonders to get Wolk’s car to the Simola Hillclimb just in time, and the multiple single-seater and touring car champion managed an impressive 36.140 seconds during the second qualifying session of the opening day – less than two seconds off Bezuidenhout’s current record despite very limited time in the car. A failed electronic sensor unfortunately put him out of action on the final day, with the win going to Byron Mitchell in a 2002 Formula VW Reynard.

Having now had the benefit of an entire year to test and refine the setup of the Gould, this has certainly set the scene for an almighty battle between Wolk and Bezuidenhout for the 2026 title, and for the class C3 honours for single-seater racing cars (five cylinders and above).

In class C2 for single-seaters up to four cylinders (naturally aspirated), Ian Schofield will be behind the wheel of his regular steed, a 2018 Mygale Formula Ford. He will compete against Theodore Vermaak in a 2020 Forza Formula Vee, and Johannes Gerber in a 2017 Van Diemen powered by a KTM 1290 V-twin motorcycle engine.

Unlimited forced-induction cars up to four cylinders fall into class C1. Former class winner Devin Robertson is returning to the Simola Hillclimb for the first time since 2023, driving the Czank Racing 1995 Radical Pro Sport that is fitted with Suzuki’s GSX 1300 R Hayabusa engine. UK-based Rick Morris will be competing in his second Simola Hillclimb in the 2014 EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford. There are also two lady drivers in the class, with the Investchem team’s Simphiwe Mohlahlo enjoying her second outing at the event in the 2025 MSA4, along with Nicole Donker who makes her Simola debut in a 2025 Formula Vee – both cars powered by a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder VW engine.

Sports prototypes

The 16th Simola Hillclimb will see two new competitors heading to the start line, competing in class C4 for sports cars and sports prototypes with naturally aspirated engines up to four cylinders. Connor Kilbride and Juan Stander will be competing in a pair of 2015 Ligier JS53 Evo 2s, both powered by the revered Honda K-series engine, as used in the Civic Type R.

The Ligier JS53 Evo 2 has a proven pedigree in endurance racing and hillclimb events around the world, with Stander racing the car in the South African Endurance Series (SAES) since June 2024.

“I was at the Simola Hillclimb last year as a spectator, and it’s great to be competing this year. This will be my first hillclimb event, and I can’t wait to release the beast on the Simola Hill,” Stander says. “The Ligier doesn’t launch off the line that quickly, but it has great downforce and it’s amazing through the corners, so hopefully I will be able to get close to the 40-second mark.”

Class C6 features the powerful large-capacity and force-fed sports prototypes, comprising former class winner Rui Campos in the Ford V8-powered 1990 Shelby CanAm, Gabriel Diedericks in a 1982 Tiga SC82 Sports 2000 equipped with a turbocharged Audi V6 engine, and Johan Bekker in the 2010 Ariel Atom with its 2.0-litre turbocharged Honda engine. They will be joined by Heinrich du Preez in a 1985 Cobra KCC with its 5.7-litre Chevrolet LS1 V8, and Mike McLoughlin in the 2020 Backdraft Racing Cobra powered by a monstrous 7.0-litre Chevrolet LS7 V8.

The 16th edition of the Simola Hillclimb takes place from 30 April to 3 May 2026.

Globally, more than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year, with an estimated 11 million tonnes entering the ocean annually threatening marine life, ecosystems, and biodiversity worldwide. As the world commemorates Earth Day on 22 April 2026, under the theme “Planet vs. Plastics”, this global crisis hits close to home in the Garden Route, where plastic pollution endangers sea turtles, marine birds, estuaries and the rich biodiversity that defines our coastline.

According to Dr Nina Viljoen, GRDM Head: Environmental Management, “plastic is the polar opposite of organic materials, it does not disappear, it accumulates”.

“The Garden Route District’s beaches, lagoons and indigenous fynbos are more than scenic landscapes; they are critical habitats that support the interconnected web of life. Plastic pollution, however, places these natural systems at risk,” said Viljoen.

Impacts on Biodiversity and Ecosystems

The effects of discarded plastics on wildlife in the Garden Route District are both direct and severe. Discarded fishing lines are major causes of death for seabirds and marine mammals, as it creates strong, non-biodegradable, near-invisible traps that remain in the environment for hundreds of years.

“Coastal birds such as gannets, terns, and gulls become entangled in discarded line and plastic fragments while feeding or nesting, reducing their breeding success and survival rates.”

Dr Viljoen says sea turtles often digest plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish, which leads to internal injury, starvation, and death. “Microplastics accumulate in estuaries such as Knysna, Wilderness and Swartvlei, disrupting the food chain that supports fish, crabs, mussels and the many species that depend on them”.

The Environmental Impact of Plastics

Plastics persists in the environment for decades, breaking down into smaller fragments that spread through coastal waters, estuaries and soil. In the Garden Route District, this results in direct harm to wildlife and long-term pressure on the natural systems that sustain biodiversity. Plastic accumulates in habitats where turtles’ nest, birds feed, and fish spawn.

Lightweight fragments are carried by wind and tides into remote stretches of coastline and fynbos, while microplastics settle in sediment, where they persist for generations.

Water Quality and Human Health Concerns

As plastics spread in rivers and estuaries, they enter the food web through filter feeders such as mussels and oysters, moving upwards through species that rely on these organisms.

Toxic additives from plastics also leach into waterways, affecting aquatic life and weakening the resilience of estuarine habitats that are already under pressure.

This contamination of water and food webs raises broader concerns for ecosystem and human health. When microplastics and associated chemical pollutants build up in fish and shellfish, such as mussels and oysters harvested along the Garden Route District’s coast, they enter the human food chain.

“Studies have linked these pollutants to hormone disruption and inflammation in wildlife, signalling a risk to the natural resources that communities depend on for food and livelihoods,” said Dr Viljoen.

These impacts extend beyond individual animals to entire ecological communities. As key species decline or change their behaviour, the balance of estuarine and coastal ecosystems is altered. Predator-prey relationships are disrupted, breeding grounds become less viable, and the resilience of habitats such as tidal flats and seagrass beds – which act as nurseries for marine life – is reduced. The loss is not only of species, but of the ecological functions that keep the Garden Route District’s natural systems healthy.

Looking Ahead

Earth Day 2026 serves as a reminder that the fight against plastic pollution is about protecting ecosystems, safeguarding the water resources that wildlife depends on, and preserving the biodiversity that makes the Garden Route District unique. The health of the Garden Route District’s environment is directly linked to the well-being of its communities. By reducing plastic pollution, we protect not only nature, but our shared future.

Suzuki Auto South Africa is getting ready to tackle the 16th annual Simola Hillclimb, taking place in the sleepy seaside town of Knysna from 30 April to 3 May.

The Japanese carmaker recently extended its long-standing support as a Tier One OEM sponsor of this prestigious event and will again take ownership of Zones 4 and 8 – the latter known to competitors and spectators as the Suzuki Esses. For the fifth consecutive year, Suzuki will also field a colourful squad of vehicles in the King of the Hill challenge, driven by some of South Africa’s best-known motoring media.

“We are excited to be returning to the Simola Hillclimb once again,” says Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager of Suzuki Auto South Africa. “It remains one of the standout events on the local motorsport calendar, giving race fans rare access to a wide variety of cars and drivers. While the spotlight often falls on the high-powered, high-value machines built specifically for the competition, Suzuki’s involvement proves that you don’t need extreme performance or deep pockets to be part of the action.”

For its 2026 campaign, Suzuki is levelling the playing field by running four identical Swift 1.2 GL+ manual hatchbacks. Endowed with a low kerb weight of 917kg, each is powered by the brand’s 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, producing 60kW at 5,700rpm and 112Nm at 4,300rpm. This gives the car a frisky power-to-weight ratio, which is beneficial when it comes to off-the-line acceleration. Riding on an extremely rigid ‘HEARTECT’ platform with recalibrated suspension, the fourth-generation Swift will also allow the four media racers to push their cornering speeds with confidence.

“Someone, somewhere is probably looking at this whole thing and saying, ‘that Swift doesn’t belong on a hillclimb.’ And that’s exactly why we’re doing it,” explains Top Gear South Africa’s Avon Middleton. “Motorsport has always been about possibility and courage, and there’s something very Suzuki about proving that you don’t need the biggest engine to take on the biggest challenge. I’m all in!”

Another competitor who’s all in and ready to put it on the line is YouTube content creator, sim racer and avid rally fan, Girlie Lukhele.

“Going from sim racing to the hot seat at the Simola Hillclimb is going to be a whole new ball game,” says the Driving with Girlie host. “I cannot wait to take on the hill this year behind the wheel of the fearless and confident Swift. Expect nothing less than a ‘swift’ and epic performance from the entire Suzuki team!”

A main rival to Lukhele, both in front of the camera and behind the steering wheel, is Ziphorah Masethe. This year, the Ignition TV regular will be trading her presenter duties for a chance to take on the challenging 1.9km Simola Hill.

“Having attended the hillclimb as a spectator several times and experienced the energy from the stands, I’m thrilled to now be part of it as a driver. I’m especially excited to be behind the wheel of a car I share so many traits with – it’s fun, full of character and personality, and feels right at home in the fast lane on our South African roads.”

Rounding off the media quartet is Instagram content creator Samuel de Fonseca.

“Being a spectator at Simola over the years and taking my followers along through the lens has always been unforgettable,” says TheCarScene founder. “Getting the chance to take on the Hill myself is every South African petrolhead’s dream, and I’m incredibly proud to be doing it with a brand that loves fun as much as I do. I can’t wait to share the raw, unfiltered thrill of the Hill with you guys.”

Supporting the media drivers on two wheels is multiple championship drag racer and Suzuki Richards Bay Dealer Principal, Jaco Viviers, who will be exhibiting the brand’s special-edition Hayabusa Ultimate Sportbike in a number of demonstration runs.

“There’s nothing quite like Simola,” says Viviers. “The atmosphere, the fans and the machinery all come together in a unique way. To be able to showcase the latest Hayabusa here is a real highlight. It’s a legendary sportbike, and I’m looking forward to letting it stretch its legs on the Hill and giving the crowd something to enjoy.”

Viviers, along with the Swift media squad, will also take part in the immensely popular pre-event King of the Hill Parade at the Knysna Waterfront on Friday, 1 May. “With a diverse driver line-up and a new take on this year’s challenge, we’re looking forward to a memorable Simola Hillclimb,” concludes Carpenter. “Alongside the thrilling Hayabusa demo runs, Team Suzuki is ready to give fans plenty to lap up.”

Anton Bredell, Western Cape Minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning said the Western Cape Department of Local Government will invest R40.5 million in municipal water resilience projects for the 2026/27 financial year.

“Climate change, population growth and economic growth continue to challenge municipalities in delivering basic services to our residents. This is especially true in the case of water security. Proactive planning to build resilience through the long-term investment in the development of water sources and associated infrastructure is therefore essential,” Minister Bredell said.

According to the targets set in the Western Cape Water Resilience Strategy (2025-2035), the province needs to secure an additional 350m³ millions of water supply by 2035 through various augmentation, conservation, infrastructure development and improved infrastructure governance initiatives.

The projects proposed for the 2026/27 financial year are:

Testing and equipping 8 boreholes in Beaufort West at a cost of R4.34 million.

Construction of a new reservoir (Phase 1) in Eendekuil in the Bergrivier Municipality at a cost of R1 million.

Bitou Municipality will be supported with R800 000 for new membranes for the desalination plant in Plettenberg Bay, as well as a R1 million contribution towards a new pipeline from the Keurbooms River to the Roodefontein dam in Plettenberg Bay.

Cederberg Municipality will see the development of a prefabricated balancing reservoir (R1.75 million) at the Citrusdal water treatment works, as well as phase 3 of a wellfield development in Lamberts Bay (R2 million).

Kannaland Municipality will receive R2 million for a deep borehole project in Calitzdorp as well as R3 million for borehole refurbishments in Ladismith.

Knysna will receive R1.75 million for the refurbishment of the Akkerkloof, Charlesford/Eastford, Gouna, and Glebe Dam pump stations (Phase B).

Laingsburg will be supported with R1 million towards a feasibility study on whether to invest in securing water from the Floriskraal Dam, or in the purification of water from current approved boreholes.

Langeberg will be supported with R1.83 million towards the raising the Dassieshoek Dam wall.

Matzikama will be supported with R1.7 million for the refurbishment of the Vredendal water treatment works, R1.5 million for a pipe bridge in Van Rhynsdorp, and R1.5 million to equip 2 boreholes in Klawer.

Swellendam will be supported with R2.4 million to develop new boreholes.

Witzenberg Municipality will be supported with R415 000 to improve telemetry systems, which includes the installation of additional bulk water meters.

Additional to this, the Department will invest R7.5 million towards the procurement of large potable water tankers for the West Coast, Central Karoo, Cape Winelands, Overberg and Garden Route District municipalities. A further R5 million will be kept as a contingency fund to be able to respond to unforeseen emergencies.

Premier Alan Winde and Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, have welcomed signs of stabilisation in the national Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the Western Cape. But the Premier stresses that continued vigilance remains essential to prevent further spread.

“The most recent case of FMD was identified on 22 March 2026 in Prospect Hill in the City of Cape Town. Since then, no new confirmed cases have been detected, marking one month without a new case in the province,” said Premier Winde.

Suspected cases in Hessequa and Bonnievale have tested negative, and the last confirmed case in the Garden Route District was recorded on 28 February 2026.

Minister Meyer highlighted that vaccination remains the cornerstone of the province’s disease control strategy.

“Foot‑and‑Mouth Disease presents a serious and ongoing threat to our livestock industry, food security and rural livelihoods. Vaccination remains the cornerstone of the Western Cape’s disease control strategy, as clearly articulated in our 21‑point plan. The Western Cape will continue to actively engage with the national Department of Agriculture to ensure the province receives its fair share of vaccines, so that we can act decisively to protect our farmers and the wider agricultural economy.”

A total of 161, 713 vaccine doses have so far been administered at 730 sites, representing 35% coverage across the province. This includes 7 925 booster doses.

Vaccination coverage is currently highest in the West Coast (63%) and the City of Cape Town (56%), followed by the Cape Winelands (35%) and Garden Route (31%). No vaccinations have been required in the Central Karoo and Overberg districts, where no confirmed outbreaks have been recorded.

To strengthen immunity and close remaining gaps, an additional 50, 000 doses of the Bioaftogen vaccine are being deployed to priority areas. This phase will focus on booster vaccinations, revaccination of previously affected farms, beef herds within a 10 km radius of infected farms, and communal and peri-urban cattle in affected municipalities.

The Premier noted that enhanced surveillance, strict movement control, permit enforcement, and traceability measures remain in place to limit the risk of further spread.

Premier Winde called on livestock owners to play their part in protecting the province’s agricultural sector.

“Farmers and livestock owners are critical partners in this effort. We urge them to maintain strict on-farm biosecurity, comply with movement control regulations, report any suspected cases immediately, and cooperate fully with vaccination teams,” he said.

He continued, “The absence of new cases since 22 March, combined with our expanding vaccination and surveillance programme, shows that our control measures are working. However, the risk remains, and we must not become complacent.”

The Western Cape Government remains committed to protecting animal health, safeguarding livelihoods, and ensuring the stability of the province’s agricultural economy.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Knysna refutes the blatantly false claims made by the African National Congress (ANC) in its NEC press conference today that the ANC has averted a Day Zero crisis in the town through “122 emergency water points and coordinated state intervention in action”.

The reality is that the emergency water points were only provisions made in the event of Day Zero, which has yet to occur. This is not an intervention to address the problem at hand, but merely treats the symptoms of a problem the ANC themselves created. It is thanks to recent rains that the situation has slightly improved. However, any and all state intervention has come directly from the DA-led Western Cape government.

The Joint Operations Committee (JOC), overseen by the Western Cape Department of Local Government and Development Planning, successfully implemented several provincial interventions to stabilise the situation in Knysna over the past few months following provincial intervention.

This intervention comes against the backdrop of ongoing failures by the PA/ANC/EFF/PBI/KIM coalition, under whose watch the crisis has worsened through corruption and poor governance.

These interventions include:

The repair of 29 minor water leaks, with no major pipe bursts reported in recent days;

A commitment to install 1 000 water meters per week, aimed at replacing approximately 8 000 bypassed meters that are undermining effective water management in Knysna;

The development of a fire hydrant repair plan to improve system integrity and firefighting readiness; and

A greater focus on regional water security in the Southern Cape, including coordinated local and provincial efforts to strengthen critical water infrastructure.

Since the current ANC-led coalition of corruption took power, it has failed to maintain basic water infrastructure, install effective water meters, use an accurate and data-driven approach to monitor water supply and consumption, and have the foresight to plan accordingly for water scarce periods. As a result, the town and its residents now face the looming threat of Day Zero and the complete collapse of municipal water supply.

Knysna now loses 50% of its water due to leaking pipes and aging infrastructure, with the cost to repair amounting to R20 million according to the Auditor General. There is also no accurate information coming from failed or bypassed water meters to inform a municipal water management strategy. The ANC did not solve this crisis, they created it along with their partners the PA, EFF, PBI, and KIM.

The Knysna water crisis is a problem created by corrupt politicians who placed their own interests above those of Knysna’s residents. This crisis could have been avoided were Knysna governed by a clean, accountable, and efficient administration under the DA. The ANC cannot now try and portray themselves as Knysna’s heroes when the town is in this mess because of them.

Voters must remember this crisis when they take to the polls in the Local Government Elections later this year. The PA and the ANC allowed your taps to run dry. Only a strong DA majority in Knysna can manage resources effectively and rescue the jewel of the Garden Route for good.

Today, the DA announced further Mayoral Candidates standing for election in municipalities across the Western Cape, to keep their towns and cities working and delivering.

These are candidates who have been through the most rigorous selection process to lead the DA caucus in their respective municipalities, and to serve as Mayor if voters make the right choice.

Building on the momentum of our previous announcements of mayoral candidates across the province, this group of candidates stands ready to campaign with all their might, to win, and to get into office to build and deliver more.

The DA Mayoral Candidates announced today are:

Bitou: Jessica Kamkam

Bergrivier: Mario Wessels

Cape Agulhas: Raymond Ross

Drakenstein: Stephen Korabie

Garden Route District: Marais Kruger

George: Browen Johnson

Matzikama: Richard van Huyssteen

Overstrand: Clinton Lerm

Swartland: Harold Cleophas

Stellenbosch: Jeremy Fasser

Witzenberg: Trevor Abrahams

These are all municipalities which are already DA-run governments, and the DA fields carefully selected candidates to ensure continuity of excellent governance.

The DA now charges our Mayoral Candidates to deliver to the highest standards, and to go further to improve lives and improve delivery where they lead.

The DA’s record of success in clean audits is but one proof point that in the Western Cape the DA is the only party able to consistently:

Drive job creation

Eliminate corruption

Create safer communities

Provide reliable basic services

With the local government elections approaching, the DA will fight tirelessly to ensure that every South African gets the services they deserve, under a DA-led government.

Despite rising travel costs linked to global instability and fuel prices, regional tourism is expected to remain resilient. International arrivals, particularly from Europe are increasing, drawn by the Garden Route’s strong value-for-money offering and unique experiences.

George Airport

“The tourism industry is one of the top contributors to the regional economy, supporting jobs and growth,” says Cobus Meiring of the Garden Route Environmental Forum (GREF). “Strategic investments, including upgrades to George Airport and developments around the Port of Mossel Bay, are strengthening the sector’s long-term potential.”

Central to this growth is the region’s natural environment. Indigenous forests, fynbos, and coastal ecosystems underpin a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking and mountain biking to golf and paragliding. The environment remains the foundation of the Garden Route’s global appeal.

However, sustaining tourism growth will require a stronger focus on environmental protection. Safeguarding biodiversity and advancing the green economy are essential to long-term success.

Climate change is intensifying risks such as drought, flooding, severe storms and wildfires, placing pressure on both infrastructure and ecosystems. Addressing these challenges demands coordinated action from government, the private sector and civil society.

As a climate change think tank, GREF continues to promote sustainable development to ensure the Garden Route’s environment and its tourism economy endures.

After the termination of the contract with the previous contractor on 05 March 2025 due to poor performance, GRDM re-advertised a new tender (Tender No. GRDM/27/24/-25) for the construction of Phase 1 of the facility. Civils 2000 (Pty) Ltd was subsequently appointed at a contract value of R109 million.

The project site was officially handed over to Civils 2000 on 11 February 2026, with site establishment commencing on 16 February 2026. Construction is currently in full swing, with the contractor progressing according to the pre-approved programme. The anticipated completion date for Phase 1 is 24 February 2027. Upon completion, GRDM will be required to obtain the necessary approvals from licensing authorities before waste disposal operations can commence.

Phase 1 focuses on the development of the minimum required infrastructure to enable the commencement of waste disposal. In the interim, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has approved a further height extension of the PetroSA landfill site, allowing for continued waste disposal while construction is underway.

Phase 2 of the project will be advertised on tender at a later stage and will include the appointment of new consulting engineers and a contractor for the construction of Cell 1B (domestic waste cell). The construction of a hazardous waste cell and associated infrastructure is also still considered to be part of Phase 2 of the project.

GRDM has noted a significant increase in waste disposal volumes generated by participating municipalities. Given the high costs associated with developing landfill sites, residents are encouraged to actively reduce waste by participating in local municipalities source separation and recycling programmes.

A monthly update will be provided about the progress of the project to ensure that the media and residents remain updated about milestones achieved.

These focus areas include culture and heritage, township and community tourism, active adventure such as outdoor sports, sustainability initiatives, gastronomy—particularly food and wine—and halal tourism offerings. The thematic approach is intended to diversify the province’s tourism appeal while ensuring that benefits are more widely distributed across communities.

Applications must be submitted through Wesgro’s official online platform, where detailed guidelines and requirements are provided. The agency emphasised that only digital submissions will be considered, underscoring the importance of adhering to the prescribed process. Additional information, including compliance requirements, is available through links provided in the application portal.

The initiative aligns with broader provincial and national tourism strategies that prioritise inclusive growth, resilience, and sustainability in the post-pandemic recovery era. By targeting underrepresented regions and sectors, Wesgro aims to create a more balanced tourism economy that supports long-term development goals.

The KKNK’s Kanna Awards are adjudicated by an independent panel and annually recognise excellence at the festival in the Klein Karoo.

The return of Breyten Breytenbach’s Boklied, directed by Marthinus Basson, is nominated for seven Kannas, including Best Director, Best Production: Theatre, Best Design and/or Technical Contribution for technical execution, Best Ensemble, and three performer awards.

Tom Lanoye’s Atropa: Die wraak van vrede (also directed by Basson) is nominated for six Kannas, including Best Production: Theatre, Best Debut Work: Theatre, Exceptional Literary Contribution for Lanoye’s translation to Afrikaans, as well as three performer awards.

Ek is nie Danie by Danie Marais directed by Nico Scheepers, is nominated for five Kannas, including Best Director, Best Production: Music Theatre, Exceptional Literary Contribution for the script and adaptation by Marais, as well as Best Design and/or Technical Contribution for the sound design of the production.

Die ander dogter, a new one-person drama with Sandra Prinsloo, is nominated for four Kannas: Best Director (Lara Foot), Best Debut Work: Theatre, Best Production: Theatre and Best Design and/or Technical Contribution for the drama’s set and lighting design.

Five productions are nominated for three Kannas each: Carla Smith’s debut comedy CRYBABY, the debut of Andrew Buckland’s new drama The Fool’s Guide, Breyten Breytenbach’s last theatre production Verwelkingslied, Anna Davel en The Melisizwe Plaatjie Collective and the cabaret Wat om te doen as die wêreld brand by Bibi Slippers.

“The 30th KKNK’s packed programme presented a major challenge for the panel: we had more than 60 theatre productions and nearly 40 music productions to get through within a week, and thanks to each panel member’s dedication, professionalism, and sheer passion and love for theatre and music, it was one of the most rewarding challenges one could give this group.

“What gives you even more energy during such a week, however, is the quality of the art presented on stages, in sand pits, on sports fields, in galleries, and yes, even on rubbish dumps. It encompassed a broad spectrum of human experiences and emotions. There were well-known legends in new guises, and exciting emerging talent that made seasoned theatre and concertgoers sit upright and take notice.

“We were once again reminded how hard people work behind the scenes to make this festival happen, and as a result the technical teams at all the venues deserve special mention without a doubt,” says Naudé van der Merwe, convenor of the Kanna panel.

The independent Kanna judging panel for KKNK 2026 was Van der Merwe (convenor), Nolan Africa, Amelda Brand, Felicia Lesch, Wayne Muller, Ilza Roggeband, Tracey Saunders and Fahiem Stellenboom. A total of 25 children between the ages of 6 and 13 years from the broader Oudtshoorn community served on the Children’s Panel. Furthermore, the Kanna judging panel was supported by Haddad Viljoen, Marguerite Robinson and Diane de Beer, who adjudicated the Kanna for Best Contribution to Visual Arts.

Kanna Awards are sponsored by amongst others Absa, Het Jan Marais Nationale Fonds, NATi, Checkers, ATKV, Castle Lager, Dotsure, Sonn Family Trust, Ton & Anet Vosloo, Wicus Pretorius, Glenwood Travel and the RautenTrust.

The winners will be announced at a glamorous event at Leopard’s Leap in Franschhoek on Thursday 14 May. A special panel prize, a special Kanna Award for Service to the KKNK and a Kanna for Exceptional Technical Service to the KKNK are also awarded during the event.

The 30th KKNK, sponsored by Absa, was presented in Oudtshoorn from Saturday 28 March to Saturday 4 April. KKNK 2026 was presented with the support of the Het Jan Marais Nationale Fonds, NATi, Checkers, Netwerk24, kykNET, ATKV, Oudtshoorn Municipality and the Western Cape Government.

Haily Oktober, HR Manager: Occupational Health and Safety and Employee Wellness, explained that this year’s theme, “Prevention is Better than Cure: Small Steps Today, Healthier Lives Tomorrow,” encourages officials to make simple, sustainable lifestyle changes that support long-term health.

A new addition to this year’s programme was a health walk, promoting accessible physical activity. Officials benefitted from practical fitness guidance, with a focus on exercises that can be done at home without the need for a gym.

Adding to the day’s lively atmosphere, officials participated in light physical activity challenges, including guided squats and push-up, encouraging team spirit and participation.

Francois Michaels, Employee Wellness Officer, highlighted the importance of accessible services.

He noted that the Municipality partnered with the Department of Health to provide screenings such as blood pressure testing and HIV screening. Officials were also able to access support services and, on a voluntary basis, update personal information where required.

To further enhance the offering, two dietitians and a physiotherapist were available to provide professional advice and personalised wellness guidance.

The event reflects the Municipality’s ongoing commitment to supporting employee wellbeing, recognising that a healthy and supported workforce is essential for effective and sustainable service delivery.

HR Department extends outreach through Uniondale Exhibition

In addition to its internal wellness initiatives, the Human Resource Department extended its outreach through a successful HR exhibition in Uniondale recently. The purpose of the exhibition was to bring HR services closer to officials, creating a platform for direct engagement with HR.

The exhibition provided officials with the opportunity to ask questions, gain clarity on policies and procedures, and access information about the support services available to them. This initiative forms part of the Municipality’s broader effort to strengthen communication between HR and employees, contributing to a more informed, supported and productive workforce.

Each HR section hosted a dedicated stall, allowing attendees to interact with HR officials without the need for prior appointments. The Traffic Department also participated by offering road safety demonstrations, adding further value to the exhibition.

A range of HR services was presented, including guidance on employee benefits and the importance of updating beneficiary forms. HR provided essential information on occupational health and safety, as well as support through the Employee Assistance Programme. The Performance Management System was explained, including processes related to performance evaluations and probation processes. Officials also received guidance on training and development opportunities, with a focus on Personal Development Plans and Skills Audit forms.

Labour Relations officials provided clarity and information on various processes and procedures, while the Recruitment and Selection team offered insight into the new online application process and the documentation required for job applications.

Event coordinator Chrystal Spies, together with HR officials, noted the success of the exhibition in improving awareness of available services. The department expressed its appreciation to all participants and visitors, encouraging officials to remain engaged with HR for updates on future events and initiatives.

The George Municipality commends the continued efforts of CropLife SA PRO in promoting safe and responsible agrochemical management, following the successful collection of 127 tonnes of obsolete pesticides across the Western Cape in 2025.

This milestone reflects strong collaboration between the agricultural sector, government institutions and pest control operators, and highlights the importance of responsible disposal practices in protecting the environment and public health.

CropLife SA PRO has now set a target to collect 150 tonnes of obsolete pesticides by the end of June 2026. Farmers across the Western Cape are encouraged to participate in this initiative to help reach the target and further reduce environmental risk.

Farmers wishing to participate must complete the prescribed inventory template and submit it to CropLife SA PRO Manager, Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, via email at gerhard@croplife.co.za by 24 April 2026.

The inventory templates for farmers, consumers and pest control operators (PCOs) are available online. Visit https://croplife.co.za/CropProtection/PRO to access the PRO portal. By clicking on the PRO tab, users will find all relevant documents, including the required inventory forms.

Participants are reminded of the following key guidelines:

There are no legal repercussions for disposing of obsolete pesticides through CropLife SA PRO.

There is no limit to the quantity of obsolete pesticides that may be declared for disposal.

No fees are charged for the thermo-destruction process, as costs are covered by CropLife SA PRO.

All materials must be accurately recorded in the inventory form, including full details of the waste generator.

Fertilisers, animal feed and animal health products will not be accepted.

Obsolete pesticides must be placed on wooden pallets and securely wrapped.

Farmers are responsible for delivering materials to designated drop-off points.

The Municipality encourages all stakeholders and agricultural organisations to share this information widely to ensure it reaches the farming community.

The past weekend, 17 & 18 April 2026, the Cricket South Africa U17 Talent Acceleration Camp took place in Cape Town (Curro Durbanville Primary School, Indoor Facility).

The objective of this camp was to assess young and talented players who are earmarked for the SA U/19 team two years ahead.

Four players from the Garden Route Badgers attended the camp. The CSA U17 Talent Acceleration Programme is a premier development initiative focused on identifying and preparing elite young cricketers for the SA U19 team and future national representation. These camps involve intense skill training, net sessions & fitness work. Other important aspects include technical skills training, batting scenarios with the new & old balls, intensity-driven fielding & tactical discussions.

The players who attended were Daniel du Preez (Outeniqua High School, Keaton Lambaatjeen (Oudtshoorn High School/Bridgton Hub), Hanno Swart (Outeniqua High School), and Qhamani Veiwer (Jonga High School/Thembalethu Hub)

The final stage of the inaugural Garden Route Giro saw the overnight leaders stretch their legs and exert their dominance on the event one last time on Saturday, 18 April. Mariëlle Trouwborst and Cronje Beukes both used their climbing prowess to ascend into early leads. Both the women’s and men’s champions raced to commanding Stage 6 victories to put exclamation points behind the tales of how their general classification crowns were won.

Cronje Beukes’ Stage 6 victory was his fifth of the 2026 Garden Route Giro and underlined his dominance in the men’s race. Photo by Shift Media Co.

Leaving Knysna for ANEW Resort Wilderness, the race followed the Seven Passes road. A 75-kilometre route with 1 100 metres of climbing appeared ideal – on paper – for a sprint finish, but Trouwborst and Beukes had other ideas. Both wanted their victories to be emphatic.

Mariëlle Trouwborst added an additional 4 minutes and 20 seconds to her final margin of victory with a commanding ride on Stage 6.
A gentle 10-kilometre spin through the neutral zone, along the banks of the Knysna Lagoon, provided little indication of the fireworks to follow. So, when the flag dropped for the racing to begin, it was interesting to see the intent Beukes displayed from the get-go. Racing solo for Specialized George Coimbra, his local Specialized Bicycles store, the race leader was at a disadvantage all week, as the Toyota Specialized Imbuko and Insect Science teams used their numerical advantage against him.

Cronje Beukes (left) attacked on Phantom Pass, just 10 kilometres into the stage, to distance Wessel Botha (centre) and Marco Joubert (right). Photo by Shift Media Co.

Beukes’ only viable approach was to make the racing too tough for the teams’ support riders to play any meaningful role for their leaders, Marco Joubert and Wessel Botha. On Stage 6, this meant setting a blistering tempo on the approach to the Phantom Pass climb and then attacking off the front of the group as the ascent steepened. Within two kilometres of the climb, only Joubert and Botha remained in contact. One kilometre later, when Beukes claimed the final King of the Mountain points of the race, he was flying solo, never to be caught.

A large group formed behind Beukes, but the pursuit was never more than half-hearted once he had established a 2-minute buffer.
“Honestly, it feels like I’ve been dreaming this week,” said an elated Beukes. “Last year was a tough year for me, breaking my leg and struggling with the recovery afterwards. Thursday was a year to the day after that accident, so winning that stage solo meant a great deal.”

Cronje Beukes’ climbing prowess set him apart from his rivals throughout the Garden Route Giro.
Realising that chasing Beukes was a futile pursuit, Botha and then Joubert sat up after Phantom Pass and waited for the group to catch up. This second group on the road included Keegan Tullis, Keagan Bontekoning, Ignatius du Preez, Herman Fourie, Manuel Pliem, Andre van Rooyen, Jan Withaar, and Dan Loubser, as well as Joubert and Botha. Thereafter, the battle for second was a tactical one; it eventually came down to a sprint finish.

Superiority on the climbs paved Mariëlle Trouwborst’s path to overall victory. Photo by Oakpics.

Du Preez outsprinted his teammate, Joubert, for second, before Withaar and Tullis completed the day’s top five. With the group all finishing within 11 seconds, there were no changes in the general classification standings. Beukes’ margin of victory, after six days of racing, was eight minutes and 28 seconds over Joubert. The 2026 champion’s climbing prowess was also rewarded with the Rosa First Ascent Climbers’ jersey, for his haul of 57 points. Joubert and Botha were second and third in that competition, too. Du Preez took home the Intermediate Sprint prize for notching up 30 points, four more than Fourie in second.

Lisa Bone enjoyed a strong final stage, cementing second on the general classification standings, with second place on the day.
The elite women’s race winner was perhaps more dominant than Beukes. Had punctures not slowed Mariëlle Trouwborst’s progress on Stages 3 and 5, she would have added more time to her general classification lead going into the last day. Yet, despite finishing on a near flat rear tyre twice, Trouwborst still took a 12-minute advantage into Stage 6.

Cherise Willeit (centre) concluded the week with two third-place finishes on Stage 5 and 6.
Like Beukes, attacking was her preference on the final day; she climbed away from her rivals on Phantom Pass within the first 13 kilometres of the stage. By the summit, it was clear that she would not be brought back by Lisa Bone, in the group behind, or Vera Looser, Cherise Willeit, and Catherine Kruger in the next group on the road.

Men’s Stage 6 podium at the 2026 Garden Route Giro (from left to right): Jan Withaar, Ignatius du Preez, Cronje Beukes, Marco Joubert, and Keegan Tullis.
“Fortunately, today started with a climb, so I could get away and not have to ride in a group,” Trouwborst said. “Near the top, I saw a man Kent Main just ahead and managed to get to his wheel. From there, we raced to the finish together.”

Women’s Stage 6 podium at the 2026 Garden Route Giro (from left to right): Vera Looser, Lisa Bone, Mariëlle Trouwborst, Cherise Willeit, and Catherine Kruger.
Trouwborst made it sound simple, but her victory on the stage and overall was built on superb climbing performances. Whenever the course went uphill on the final stage, she gained time. Behind, Bone was enjoying a better day than she had endured on Stage 5. Though the First Ascent Velo Purple Jersey competition leader was unable to climb with Trouwborst, she remained ahead of Looser, Willeit, and Kruger, securing her second position on the general classification standings.

The battle for third, on the day, then became the most interesting contest in the women’s race. In the run-in to Wilderness, Willeit managed to get away from Looser and Kruger. Having finished fourth on Stages 1, 2, 3, and 4, Willeit’s third place on Stage 5 was backed up by third on Stage 6. Nonetheless, it was Looser who took home bronze overall, while Willeit was fourth and Kruger fifth on the final general classification standings.

Bone secured the Intermediate Sprint title and the First Ascent Velo Jersey, which also carried a R25 000 reward. Ignatius du Preez was similarly recompensed for his sprint successes. Both Trouwborst and Beukes rode away with R100 000 for their victories, and an additional R25 000 for securing the Rosa First Ascent Climbers’ jerseys. This takes their haul for the Garden Route Giro to R125 000 each, which the men’s race winner will likely use to finance his dream of racing in Europe during the South African winter.

Pacaltsdorp United Cricket Club has ended their season on a perfect note as they claimed their third SWD Cricket Premier League title in four seasons. They outplayed Sussex in the final that was contested on the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on Saturday with a convincing 60-run victory.

Trophy Hand over: Andrew Jantjies, SWDC Non-Independent Director hands-over the Petersen Trophy to Matthew Thorne, the captain of Pacaltsdorp United.

The final had been delayed following a series of arbitration proceedings, in which the arbitrator ruled in favor of SWD Cricket during the last hearing, after Knysna Cavaliers had lodged a formal dispute.

Heavy overnight rain resulted in a delayed start after the ground staff had worked tirelessly to ensure a contest. In a match that was reduced to 37 overs per batting team, Pacaltsdorp won the toss and opted to bat first. Two significant partnerships – 56 runs for the second wicket between Anaxolo Khitshini (who, with 47, was the top runs scorer in the match and Bradley Carolus, and 46 for the 8th wicket (when Pacaltsdorp were in trouble at 114/7) between Enathi Khitshini (28) and the captain, Matthew Thorne, were important performances in the context of the match.

With a defendable total of 169, Sussex were never threatened with a successful run chase. Enathi Khitshini, the 2025 SA Schools captain, was unplayable with his spin bowling and claimed 3/9 in 8 overs. Three brilliant run-out dismissals also resulted in Sussex being dismissed in the 35th over for only 109 runs – for a defeat of 60 runs.

Sussex was desperate to break a drought of 27 years since they last won the Petersen trophy, whilst Pacaltsdorp had a perfect season. Their men’s team has won both the 50-over premier league competition and T20 Challenge, whilst their women’s team has won both the Division 1 50-over competition and T20 trophy.

The match was unfortunately spoiled when one of the Sussex players, Randle Otto, stormed onto the field to express his dissatisfaction with an umpire’s decision. He is likely to face a disciplinary charge.

The summarized scorecard is:

Sussex vs Pacaltsdorp United

PACALTSDORP UNITED 169 all out – 36 overs (Anaxolo Khitshini 47, Enathi Khitshini 28, Warren Bell 21, Franco Geldenhuys 3/33, Keano Witbooi 3/35, Ravin-Lee Kemmies 3/34)

SUSSEX 109 all out – 34.5 overs (Johandré Barnard 19, Nathan Engelbrecht 19, Enathi Khitshini 3/9)

Pacaltsdorp United won by 60 runs
