The New Vauxhall Astra At Frankfurt’s Motor Show

The new generation Vauxhall Astra will make its debut at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show and will reach UK dealers by later on this year. The brand new Astra marks a major shift in the UK’s compact sector towards premium design and quality. Echoing the flowing forms of its exterior the clever design is effortlessly transformed inside cabin to give the passengers more comfort and space.

Intelligent engineering has gone into the design of the seats; their height can be elevated by up to 65mm, while lateral movement extends to 280mm, allowing all drivers and passengers to find their ideal seating position. The main instruments and gauges are ringed with chrome, with the speedo and tachometers angled inwards towards the driver. The dashboard has a dark grain finish with a subtly contrasting texture to other mouldings in the cabin. Ambient lighting and generous use of premium materials enhances the quality feel of the cabin.

To underline Vauxhalls commitment to engine downsizing and reduced emissions, the new model introduces a 140PS turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol unit. This will be complimented with three further petrol engines and four diesel engines ranging from 95PS to 160PS.

The first few photos have been released; or rather paparazzi’ed of the new Vauxhall Astra Hatch. The first noticeable difference is the ‘chunkier’ body and premium styling to the whole car. That said it’s not just had a make over, it has a whole new chassis and inherits many of the design features found on the Insignia. It also has some very high end optional extras like the unique damper settings – standard, sport and tour and the latest generation Adaptive Forward Lighting, featuring bi-xenon lights that change intensity and focus to suit road conditions. The model is first being rolled out as a 5-door hatchback, but if it proves a hit then the model could be transferred to launch a new Vauxhall Astravan and possibly a Twintop convertible. With a sporty, coupe-like appearance, muscular rear treatment and purposeful front end, the new Vauxhall Corsavan isn’t the sort of van that looks like it would shine in the face of the ‘green economy’, however its set a new class MPG record.

A Corsavan 1.3 CDTi Club, driven by journalist John Kendall and university tutor Paul Nieuwenhuis, clocked up an impressive 81.02mpg on the two-day eco event. The 81.02mpg figure was the highest recorded on the event, a two-day, 334-mile route across Hampshire, Somerset and Devon incorporating motorway, town and cross-country driving – a real selling point in today’s tight operating budgets.
