LPU11 HAS LAUNCHED

2011-11-16T07:02:00.001-08:00

LPU11 has officially launched! This new year of the LPU launches with a brand new members-only online community, an exclusive merchandise package and additional benefits, including LPU members' request for early admission into Linkin Park shows.

We are also releasing our annual LPU CD. The LPU11 CD is filled with unreleased demos from Hybrid Theory to A Thousand Suns. Some of the songs on this CD are early versions of familiar songs, such as the “In The End” demo. Other songs on this CD never made it on a Linkin Park album and remained unfinished and in raw form. All of the songs represent the journey it takes to create an album as a whole, and we're excited to share them with you.

Thank you to our dedicated members for making LPU such an amazing place for us to connect with our fans!

Mike Shinoda at the Billboard Film & TV Conference

2011-10-26T05:14:00.000-07:00

Mike Shinoda recently attended the Billboard Film & TV Conference that ran from 24-25 October in Los Angeles, CA to discuss his ongoing work on the soundtrack for the movie he's scoring - The Raid. During the event Mike took part in interviews and panels to shed some light on the project which you can check out below.

Video Q&A with Mike Shinoda on Scoring The Raid:

Linkin Park songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and rapper, Mike Shinoda sat down with Billboard senior correspondent Phil Gallo at the Billboard and Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference to answer questions about his experiences in creating music with his band versus composing music for films. The trained-musician is currently writing and recording music for his first feature film "The Raid," directed by Gareth Evan and slated for an early-2012 release.

In the video below Shinoda explains why he chose to work with Joe Trapanese (he worked on the "Tron: Legacy" score with Daft Punk); how art school critiques helped him with the collaborative process (and helped him to lose his ego); and how studying piano since the age of three has come to help in scoring films.

Mike Shinoda on the “Out of the Band and Onto the Screen” Panel:

Examiner.com have an article describing the Out of the Band and Onto the Screen panel which Mike was involved with alongside Robert Kraft, Curt Smith, Cliff Martinez, Peter Himmelman and Joe Trapanese who is co-composing The Raid with Mike. Read an excerpt, check out the full article and watch some video of the panel below.

"...Another question had to do with the editing process: How do you decide which pieces to keep and which ones to cut? Mike Shinoda answered that question with an anecdote from when he was in school at the Art Center in Pasadena. He stated, “Our experience at the school was we would go in with say a painting and the class which was about thirty of us would each put our pieces up on the board and basically tell each other why our paintings were horrible for hours and over the course of years of doing that you get good at it. You get really good at being able to take criticism and give criticism and leaving your ego at the door and being productive. If you’re working with people who are just not interested I guess it’s a much bigger issue but as long as you’re all on the same team you can have those kinds of conversations where you can say to somebody ‘look, I’m going to let these other things go—I really believe in this one’ then people will be a little more receptive” to which Robert Kraft replied, “you have a big future as a film composer with that attitude because that is the essence of it.” Mike responded, “that’s how our band works. We’ve got six guys doing that. Every Monday we get together with our records. That’s the reason why it takes us over a year to make a record is that we’re killing ideas one right after the other and building up new ones… even one guy in our group doesn’t like it for some reason or another we’re going to get in there and figure out what is it about it that he’s not into and we’re going to respect that even if he cant write the piece that we’re talking about—even if he cant write the vocal or he cant write whatever his opinion is potentially one sixth of our fan base so we’re going to respect that and try and make it work.”

The Raid: Film Score Update

2011-10-22T06:53:00.000-07:00

The score for The Raid is steadily moving along. In between Linkin Park studio sessions–which are also underway–I’m working on the feature-length score for this brutal Indonesian action movie. With a good chunk of the movie now sounding good, and a lot of great hype and reviews coming from folks who have gotten a chance to see the film, I’m excited to tell you a little more about it.
Writing big, nasty parts for a fast-paced action scene have come pretty naturally for me. There are lots of moments with big beats and unique, exciting sounds. But one thing I’ve found that’s different in writing for film (versus an album) is being aware of how and when to make the music transparent. The music needs to be invisible at times. Writing a Linkin Park song is usually about our personal stories, not someone else’s. And an LP song is designed to draw you in, to catch your ear with words, melodies, and sounds. Often, the techniques I might use to create a catchy sound or “hook” would actually take away from a scene in The Raid, so it’s been a fun challenge to learn when and how to let the movie’s story come first.
I also enlisted the help of Joe Trapanese, best know for his work with Daft Punk on the TRON score and soundtrack. Joe also did strings on the newest M83 album, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.” Joe comes from a composing / arranging / film background, and we’re finding great ways to inform and compliment one anothers’ work in the music for this movie.
Here’s a cool (fan-made?) video for Joe’s favorite track he worked on, from M83′s new album, a song called “Wait”

Linkin Park Radio - NEW

Staggering Across the Finish Line.

2011-09-28T06:36:00.000-07:00

The performance at the Griffith Park Observatory seems like forever ago. The show, and performance of The Catalyst for the MTV VMAs was the kickoff of our tour for A THOUSAND SUNS. Now, at the end of the tour and cycle, a moment of reflection is in order.

To be honest, we were really hurting at the end of it all. Earlier this week, I stumbled into the venue in Bangkok with my band mates, dumbfounded at our state: one man down from food poisoning, two arms in slings, a bruised hand, cuts all over, sleep deprivation, and motion sickness, on top of what would be another 7+ hour travel day.

A year before, at Griffith Park, this tour started with the release of an album that was challenging to make, and a challenge for fans to understand. We knew the road ahead was going to be difficult. There were exhausting tours, confused and angry fans, and bloodthirsty critics on the horizon. But that night in Thailand, before the show, those obstacles were in front of me in the realest way.

A year before, we knew what we were getting into. And we believed in our album, we were encouraged by the fans. As time went on, as some fans went away and others came along for the ride, I’m proud of the thing we all built together. The tour took us to amazing new places. The performances at Puerta De Alcala, Griffith Park, Red Square, Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore (among others) were landmarks for the band.

And the fans in Bangkok helped us power through one of our most difficult shows, showing the love that Linkin Park fans all over the world are known for.

So at the end of it all, I just wanted to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank-you to my bandmates, our staff, road crew, and fans for making this tour and album cycle amazing. Thank you.

Now, time to go home and get back to work…

Transcript: LPU Chat with Chester

2011-08-01T22:53:00.000-07:00

After having to reschedule his chat session with the LPU, Chester got a chance to talk with LPU Members today about a variety of things, including the new album, live shows, the writing of A Thousand Suns and his musical career. We here at the LPA managed to get into the chat and put together an abridged transcript, in which Chester answers a lot of interesting questions! Take a look below!

Q: What is the new album going to sound like?

It’s going to be different. Too early to say what it’s going to sound like, we have no idea. But, we’re working with Rick, and we’re in the process of writing some songs.

Q: What was the hardest obstacle to over come while making A Thousand Suns?

I would say that just kind of getting out of a comfort zone when we write. Once you know how to do something, you kind of want to keep repeating that and that gets really easy, but I think that overcoming the safe route is probably the hardest part because it’s easy to do the same thing. It’s harder to take a chance and make music that sounds different than the stuff than the stuff that was successful in the past.

Q: Will you make another Dead By Sunrise record?

Maybe. I don’t know. I think I’ll probably make another one. But I think that Dead By Sunrise is something that’s gonna have to happen when I’m not busy with Linkin Park, and that could be in a long time. So I don’t know when the next one will come out.

Linkin Park Moscow Concert Visuals

2011-07-14T02:43:00.000-07:00

Ghost Town Media, known for working on the special effects of Meeting of A Thousand Suns and recent Linkin Park music videos, have released the concert visuals that they worked on for the Transformers: Dark Of The Moon premier concert in Moscow, Russia. The visuals include the Moscow concert intro, New Divide, What I've Done, and their recent single, Iridescent.

Ghost Town was tasked with creating visual assets to accompany Linkin Park at their performance for the premiere of “Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon” in Moscow, Russia. Unfortunately for fans of the band, those assets were created for that concert only, and tragically will never be seen again. However, fortunately for fans of the band, here they are! Enjoy!

Interview with Chester in Kerrang

2011-07-14T02:28:00.000-07:00

Yahoo has excerpts of an interview with Chester in this week’s issue of Kerrang magazine. MSC has the scans here. Also, the LPUX merch packages have started shipping, you’ll receive a shipping confirmation email, and your receipt will also be updated to say SHIPPED.

Chester Bennington cringes when recalling the earlier days of Linkin Park as he was “such a nightmare”.
The 35-year-old rocker is frontman of the nu-metal group, and has spoken in the past about his battles with alcohol when the band were at the height of their fame.
Chester, who says by 2006 he was “a full-blown, raging alcoholic”, regrets being argumentative back in those days.
“People didn’t want to talk to me about things that might cause a confrontation because I would be irate. I had no idea I was such a nightmare,” he confessed in an interview with Kerrang! magazine.
Chester feels he is in a much better place nowadays, and is happy to say he no longer consumes alcohol. He feels confident he will never return to his alcoholic ways.
“I don’t drink, and that’s the most important thing right there,” he enthused.
“I choose to be sober now, I choose not to drink. I have drunk over the last six years since I started my journey and thankfully it’s not turned into anything bad.
“But what it comes down to is that I just don’t want to be that person anymore. I don’t have all the emotional stuff and all the turmoil going on all the time anymore. I’ve gotten comfortable with being out of all that stuff.”
The rocker also took the time to consider the next Linkin Park album, which is in the process of being made. He argues that it should be very different to their 2010 offering A Thousand Suns.
“We want it to be different than A Thousand Suns. I don’t want to explain how because I don’t want to put an idea into people’s heads. The music is great and well ahead of where we were expecting to be,” he enthused.
“It will probably get a very polarised reaction, which pleases me. As an artist, I want a reaction.”
