Comment Banks for Reports

Hi everyone,
Am shattered after coping with my main other History teacher in the Department off for the last 3 months with stress, and wondered if anyone had some comment banks we could look at? Ours are currently not great. Personally I don't agree with them as it can depersonalise the comments but with a Department with non specialists and lots of classes we don't have much choice. Anything you have would be gratefully received.
Rachel

Hi all,

I don't suppose anyone has any decent resources/plans they might be willing to share? Trying to gather some more interesting resources for this unit for next year. Also, does anyone know or have any decent videos/dvds which they might be willing to divulge or copy (i would be more than willing to pay for them). Really just trying to make more interesting!

Many thanks.

My gathered resources are all available on: http://www.4shared.com/dir/9584340/705928/sharing.html

should anyone like to have any.

OFSTED - Next Week

Hello,

Bit of a complicated story but a nearby school is currently in special measures with no humanities staff due to long term absences. They have asked my school for a humanities teacher to go in and help them out by teaching lessons next week as ofsted are in and I have agreed to go.

Unfortunately I have no idea about schemes of work, levels of students etc... and was hoping for a little bit of advice. My plan is to use one-off lessons for each year group and then keep teaching those three lessons.

Year 7 - medieval entertainment
Year 8 - either Fire of London or Victorian Towns
Year 9 - Vicorian Towns, Blitz Spirit or Dresden.

As I have no idea about the GCSE I was going to leave that until monday.

How does this sound? What else should I be thinking about? I have no idea what else I should be concerned about so any help/comments would be much appreicated.

Thanks

Hi guys,

I'm starting my teacher training in September and wondered if there was anyone else out there who's been frantically reading through these forums and hoping someone will start a new thread for us newbies?!!

These forums have been fantastic in my preparation for next year - although, despite the fact that I'm constantly googling anything and everything to do with history and teaching, I don't feel I'm in any way prepared for what I've been told dozens and dozens of times will be the hardest, most terrifying year of my life!!

I guess that knowing that it will be hard is the first step!!

Hope there's more of you out there so we can share experiences and stories over the next year...

Elle

Moon landings anniversary

I have decided to scrap my normal end of term activities for year 7,8,9 in favour of looking at the Apollo 11 moon landings. I want to do something interactive, stimulating and history skills based. Has anyone any ideas or resources I could steal? I had already thought about podcasts, giant post its and tv programmes but as ever you are all a fantastic resource and are bound to have something better. I will post my finished resources when I have finished them. Many thanks in anticipation.
Carol S

Collapsed Timetable Days

Lots of schools seem to be talking about re-arranging the KS3 curriculum and timetable. One of the better ideas (in my view) is what are being called "Collapsed Timetable Days", or "Deep Learning Days". Whatever they are called, you know the idea: suspend the ordinary timetable for a whole day, and hand entire year groups to a department to carry out some meaningful, whole day, learning. Some schools are doing this once a term, some twice a term, some even more - I've heard of one doing it once a week! The idea is not unknown -Holocaust Days, Black History Weeks, for example - but the frequency is new.
This surely has huge potential for History and I hope History departments are seizing the initiative. Visits! speakers! Whole films! variety of creative responses! Debates! Newspapers! Podcasts! Group competitions! We are not wedded to 50/60/70 minute slots as the only possible time-span for learning history, are we? What about a Black Death Day for Y7? A D-Day Day for Y9? An Irish History Day for anyone you like?

Has anyone got going on this yet? What did you do?

Has anyone begun to plan for such a day yet? What are you going to do?

This Forum is surely the ideal plce to swap thoughts.
Chris

The Miners Strike

Hi Guys,

I've been collecting some resources for a long time on the miners strike and I now want to design a course in Year 9 or even a GCSE coursework module on the topic.

Its an absolutely brilliant topic and the ultimate clash of ideologies: Collectivism Verses Selfish Individualism, class conflict, globalisation verses national self sufficiency. However, its not a topic that many history text books have started to look at so I don't suppose anyone has got any resources, ideas or even schemes of work that they fancy sharing on the subject?

I appreciate its a specialist subject, but its very relevant to the community that teach in. My main reason for wanting to do something on the topic is that as head of General Studies as I've been able to teach the topic to my lower sixth as part of their economic, political and social eduaction, but the new TLR system means that I can't be head of history and General Studies, so I want to weave it into my KS3 or KS4 curriculum. Has anyone got any ideas or resources that I borrow?

Kind Regards

Roy
