• Fill any cracks or seams with wood filler, allow it to dry completely and then sand smooth. Caulk the perimeter edges for a neat finish.

The annual Don't Move, Improve! competition has always been a platform for showcasing the most innovative and sustainable home improvement projects across London, and this year's shortlist is no exception. One of the standout projects for 2023 is Low Energy House in Haringey, designed by Architecture for London.

This project aims to be a prime example of how typical terraced homes in London can be refurbished sustainably, without compromising on design or aesthetics. Low Energy House manages to strike a perfect balance between preserving the original structure of the house and incorporating new additions such as a rear extension and a loft conversion.

One of the primary objectives of the project was to significantly reduce the energy requirements of the house. This was achieved by improving the insulation, triple-glazing and enhancing the airtightness of the house. But the project is more than just about sustainability. The design celebrates the modest beauty of the original structure while creating an open and spacious interior that maximises natural light and connectivity with the outdoors.

The Low Energy House is a fantastic example of how homeowners can renovate their homes sustainably, while still creating a beautiful and functional space that meets their needs. Projects like these inspire us to think differently about how we live and how we can make our homes more sustainable.

We can't wait to see who the winner of the Don't Move, Improve! competition will be, but whatever the outcome Low Energy House sets an inspiring example for others to follow.

In this post, I examine its construction, explore what makes it unique and test out its comfort levels.

Testing out the mattress

Looking for ways to maximise your storage space? Say goodbye to clutter and hello to a tidy organised bedroom with our guide to installing fitted wardrobes.

As someone who loves to curate beautiful spaces, nothing excites me more than a well-designed storage solution. This is particularly true when it comes to creating a stylish and functional bedroom, where storage is key. When we first moved into our home a few years ago we experimented with a range of different options, but none of them really worked for us. We’d been craving a more organised look for some time, and after looking around at a few different systems we turned to Leileier to help us design the perfect solution.

Here’s how we transformed our spare room with fitted wardrobes, and how you can too.

1. Assess your storage needs

Before we began the design process, we created an inventory of what we needed to store in our new wardrobes. This included everything from clothing and shoes to bags and accessories. By understanding our storage needs we were able to design a wardrobe that maximised every inch of available space. At this point it's a good idea to also spend some time decluttering your existing wardrobe. This will make it easier to organise your new fitted wardrobes and help you make the most of the space available. Start by removing everything from your wardrobe and sorting items into piles of keep, donate, or throw away. Be ruthless and keep only items you really love and wear frequently.

2. Create a custom design

Think about the features you want to build into the design. These could include adjustable shelving, pull-out drawers, hanging rails or even a built-in dressing table. The possibilities are endless. We booked a consultation with the experts at Leileier and they helped us to come up with a bespoke design that was tailored to our specific needs. We opted for the Basel range - a classic Shaker style design that comes in a range of different colours and Leileier sent over a sample door before we placed our order so that we could colour-match it to our existing decor. We were also able to choose from a range of different handle options to create the look we wanted.

3. Select quality materials

Opt for materials and a finish that will withstand wear and tear over time. Solid wood offers durability and timeless appeal, with various finishes available to match your decor. MDF is a more affordable option with a smooth finish that makes it easy to paint, while plywood is strong and lightweight. Whichever material you opt for, ensure it has a high-quality finish that provides durability and resistance to scratches and stains. We chose MDF with a high-quality painted finish and were really impressed with the quality and value for money it offered.

4. Choose a skilled installer

If you’re skilled at DIY you may be able to install them yourselves as we did, but if in doubt, hire a professional installer to fit them for you. The construction is a little more complicated than a standard flatpack design, and older houses in particular often aren’t perfectly square! The team at Leileier can arrange this for you.

5. Organise your space

Once the installation is complete, it’s time for the fun part - organising your new wardrobes. Start by hanging your clothes on the rails, with longer items such as dresses and coats on one side and shorter items on the other side. If you have lots of shorter items you can utilise the full height of the wardrobe by doubling up and using two hanging rails instead of one. Shelves are perfect for folded clothes, bags, and shoes, while drawers and baskets are great for storing smaller items such as socks and underwear. Use dividers to help keep them organised and tidy. Finally, if you have a lot of shoes, consider using a shoe rack or a pull-out shoe shelf to keep them organised and accessible.

In summary, whether you’re looking to maximise storage space or create a more streamlined look, fitted wardrobes are the perfect solution, allowing you to wave goodbye to clutter and say hello to a sleek, stylish room that is functional as well as beautiful.

After writing about home and interior products for more than 10 years, I’ve tested and reviewed a lot of different bed linen options, so I’ve put together everything I’ve learned and compiled my ultimate guide to choosing the best bed sheets. In this post, I’ll cover the different types of fabric, thread count, and sizing options available. I’ll also provide tips on how to care for your new bed linen. So if you’re looking to update your bedroom with a fresh new set of sheets, read on for everything you need to know about selecting the best options for your budget.

The different types of fabric for bedding

Cotton is the most popular type of fabric for bed linen. It’s soft, durable, and breathable, but will need ironing if you want to achieve that crisp, hotel-style look.

If you’re after a more relaxed, easy-care look linen is a great option. Made from flax plants it is known for its strength and absorbency.

Silk is soft and smooth, offering a luxurious, high-end luxurious feel. However, it is also more delicate and expensive.

Polyester is a synthetic fabric that is usually more affordable, but it doesn’t offer the same comfort and breathability as natural fabrics.

Thread count

Thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. It can range from as low as 180 to as high as 1000. The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the fabric will be. However, a high thread count does not necessarily mean better quality. A lower thread count can be just as soft and durable if the fabric is made from high-quality materials.

The most common size options are single, double, king and super king. Make sure to measure your mattress and duvet before you shop so you know what size sheets and covers you need. Standard UK duvet cover sizes are:

Single: 140 x 200cm

Double: 200 x 200cm

King: 230 x 220cm

Super King: 260 x220cm

Flat or fitted sheets?

Most bedding companies offer the option of either flat or fitted sheets. Some people prefer a flat sheet, while others prefer a fitted sheet. It really is all down to your own personal preference. Fitted sheets tend to stay in place better, meaning you won't have to constantly adjust them, but flat sheets are more versatile. They can be used as a top sheet on their own or in combination with a fitted sheet and blanket. You can also use them on any type of bed, including futons and daybeds.

The best temperature balancing and cooling bed sheets for menopause, night sweats and hot sleepers

If you're looking for the best cooling bed sheets, look for those made from natural fibers like cotton or linen. Silk is also a good choice. Avoid polyester and other synthetic fabrics, as they aren’t as breathable.

The best silk bed sheets

Silk bed sheets are one of the most expensive options, but they are also amongst the most luxurious. Soft and smooth to the touch, silk bed sheets are also temperature regulating, so you'll be comfortable all night long.

The best linen bed sheets

Linen bed sheets are made from the flax plant and have a textured, slightly nubby surface. Known for their absorbency and breathability, they are a good choice for hot summer nights. Linen is also durable - your sheets will get softer with each wash.

The best natural hemp bed linen

Hemp is a durable and breathable fabric, making it ideal for those who suffer from allergies or skin sensitivities. It's also an eco-friendly choice, as hemp is a sustainable crop.

These are great options if you’re shopping on a budget. Cotton is a natural material that is both durable and breathable.

The best extra deep fitted sheets

If you have a thicker mattress you’ll need an extra deep fitted sheet. Here are a few options.

The best luxury bed sheets and bed linen sets

The most luxurious bed sheets are made from high-quality materials, such as Egyptian cotton and silk. They are more expensive than other types of bedding but are worth the investment for those who want the best possible night’s sleep.

The best sustainable options for bed sheets

Organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, lyocell and eucalyptus can all be sustainable options. Look out for OEKO-TEX certification or explore suppliers who are members of the Better Cotton initiative. Check out the eco-credentials of each supplier for further details.

The best anti-bacterial sheets

These are a great choice for people who suffer from allergies or asthma, or those with sensitive skin. Anti-bacterial bed sheets are made from a variety of materials, including cotton, polyester, and microfiber.

The best Egyptian cotton sheets

Egyptian cotton bed sheets are made from a type of cotton that is grown in the Nile River Valley and is known for its long, strong fibers. This makes it possible to create a fabric that is soft, yet durable. Egyptian cotton bed sheets are also breathable and hypoallergenic, making them a good choice for people with sensitive skin.

The best easy care, no iron & easy iron bed sheets

Crisp Egyptian cotton looks amazing but will need ironing to look its best. If you’re not a fan of ironing and are looking for something a little more low maintenance. Linen is a great alternative for a relaxed, lived-in look, or try easy-care cotton.

How to care for your new bed set

Once you’ve chosen your new bed set you’ll want to keep it looking its best. Cotton and linen can be machine washed in warm water with a mild detergent. Silk should be dry cleaned or hand-washed in cool water with a mild detergent. Polyester can be machine-washed on a gentle cycle. Always follow the care instructions on the label to ensure your bedding lasts for years to come.

best buys - Our verdict

Savoir’s bed linen range is the ultimate luxury option in my view but it comes in at the very top end of the price range. If you’re looking for high-quality sheets without the high-end price tag I’d recommend Rise & Fall or Scooms. I also love the H&M Premium Selection linen range and you can’t go wrong with The White Company, particularly if you shop during the sale to pick up the best discounts.

New for 2022, Jude is the latest addition to British Design Shop’s expanding collection of sofas.

I recently styled and photographed it as part of my ongoing work with the brand. I wanted to offer an alternative to the grey, beige and cream tones we’ve seen so much of over the past few years so I chose this stunning textured weave from Romo Fabrics in Serandite. This meant moving out of my usual colour comfort zone, which I was initially a little hesitant about, but when I saw the finished piece I totally fell in love with it! The colour is warm and soft-toned and works beautifully with earthy neutrals like these ceramic pieces. The textured weave gives it a multi-dimensional appearance rather than a flat finish, so it’s perfect for adding richness and depth to a design scheme. If, like me, you’re sometimes a little unsure about colour this is a great way to move beyond grey or beige. And if you have no such problem and gravitate quite readily towards bolder colour combinations it would look great paired with scatter cushions in one of the complementary colourways from the Romo collection, such as Goldcrest or Navy.

Blending both square and circular forms Jude is a sumptuous, curvaceous design. It’s available in either a single piece format as shown here or as a sectional. There’s also a loveseat option. Like all British Design Shop sofas it’s made to order here in the UK, with the designers and craftsmen working closely together to create furniture of an exceptionally high standard.

It’s a strong design that has personality and presence, but it’s also versatile – by opting for different cushion arrangements you can style it in several different ways. Back cushions are included for full comfort and support, or you can switch things up and opt for bolsters and/or scatter cushions to create a cleaner, more minimal look.
