Ahead of a high-profile UK tour in support of Eddi Reader, of Fairground Attraction, MG Boulter needed a simpler, easier to navigate website without the fuss of WordPress. We offered him a solution using Joomla which has many features included, out-of-the-box, including SEO tools, two-factor authentication and caching. Almost the only thing we added was the extremely easy to use YooTheme site builder template which gave us so much control over the layout.

The website is deliberately simple to get straight to the details of MG Boulter’s long career in music, with an extensive discography, frequent tour dates and links out to Bandcamp, Patreon and more.

Ecommerce events website built with Joomla

We were asked to create a simple and easy to use website that would enable users to purchase access to online and in-person CPD ( continuing personal development ) events for psychotherapists, psychologists and mental health professionals. The site needed to be quick to load on mobile and tap into other available payment methods such as Apple Pay.

The build was very quick, using Joomla and a lightweight template. The design, provided in Figma, meant we could easily include styles direct from the design document into the CSS.

The events component used meant we could include a lot of custom information to populate areas of an event page that needed to list running order, speaker biographies, course requirements and more.

With traffic driven via a mailing list we saw ticket sales from the day of launch which was exactly the aim of the site.

Joomla Gigs Listing Website

We’re fond of a well-optimised side project and Music On My Doorstep is no exception. It was built out of a personal wish to know where all the gigs were happening in and around the Southend-on-Sea area. The version of the website that is live is the second iteration as we realised trying to build a component to list bands, venues and gigs was a tall order, especially as it was done in spare time.

The live website is a Southend gig guide which immediately shows the user what’s on starting with the nearest gig to today’s date and is event-driven. Each listing clicks through to a more comprehensive events page which includes other details such as support acts, ticket links and a map for the venue. The map, using Google Maps API, was an important addition. For a reasonably compact city, Southend has a lot of venues. We have 55 listed but there’s more than that if you include community centres and the odd wharf and impromptu pitches near the pier. It’s also important to promote local performers and to encourage a community while attracting SEO traffic to the website by listing bigger names who are appearing at the larger venues in the city.

Though it’s not listed as a beta we have been keen to gather feedback and continue to build a list of features for the next phase of the website. This includes how best to get signups to the mailing list.

Portfolio: Wellbeing Promise WordPress website

We worked with Hughes Design to bring this hospitality industry initiative to life via a WordPress website where hotels, pubs, restaurants and bars could sign-up to the Wellbeing Promise. The website gives details of the businesses and also the list of promises they have committed to. We used WordPress as a framework which made it easy to tap into user functionality, enhanced by Ninja Form customisation. Hughes Design created the look and feel, logos and icons that appear throughout the site.

Portfolio: Mayfair Times home page revamp

Our project was driven by data gathered through Google Analytics and Google Search Console that showed the majority of visitors arrived at the Mayfair Times magazine website via its homepage. With this knowledge we set about creating an optimised experience that gave visitors the best options for finding content of interest on this news-driven WordPress website.

Portfolio: Trinity PR Rebranded WP Website

As the website developers for Hughes Design we have worked on websites for Trinity PR for around 10 years. In our portfolio there’s several WordPress websites that we built for them during that time. This year we were tasked with a reboot of their site which included a rebrand of their look and feel as well.

The website contains a large number of popular articles and that content was going to remain in the news section. Some pages were merged and we set redirects to ensure that the SEO and page ranking for the site was maintained. Visitors that land on 404 pages are very impressed.

New Build, not rebuild

Sometimes the work we undertake as website developers is to “re-skin” or rebuild a website with a new design. While it may seem the quickest route to getting an established website looking refreshed, a website that has been around for some time will come with its own quirks and legacy setup. We have found that WordPress websites that have gone through several major version updates sometimes include older settings.

With the view of creating something new we started the Trinity PR website from scratch, with a new theme and design. Existing content that would remain on the website was exported to a staging site and incorporated into the new layout. In addition we created new sections with custom post types and the ever popular Advanced Custom Fields plugin to provide additional areas in these pages. We believe starting a site from scratch is an approach that give can provide some advantage with pagespeed for improved page ranking as well.

Mobile First Website Design

The site uses a mobile-first approach and with other sites we’ve built and designed recently, the conventional navigation bar has been replaced by the equally recognisable burger menu. This in part reflects the audience that the website is aimed at. A good number of visitors will have come to a website from a mobile search or after clicking a link in an email alert.

The bright, bold redesign of the Trinity PR WordPress website has been well received and we’re proud to be at the future of website design in the work we do.

Portfolio: Shape To Fabrication

The Shape to Fabrication conference has been running for nearly 20 years and we created a reboot of their website for the 2018 event. Organised by Simply Rhino, the event itself presents innovative real world projects in architecture and design, “…going beyond the theoretical…” and features presentations and talks on projects by major names in the industry.

Video was recorded of presenters and attendees at the previous event in 2018 and we used this as the backdrop to the homepage of the website.

The 2020 event was postponed due to lockdowns but it has been announced for April 2023.

Using WordPress, custom post types and custom fields we created a template that would enable easy content updates for presentation information, including time order and splitting into different days. The site utilises structured data for the event to give it extra searchability. We also looked at mobile-first, dispensing with a traditional navigation bar and replacing it with a mobile menu for all devices. This gave us more space for content and the engaging video sequence at the start.

Portfolio: CB Motors WordPress Website Design and Build

Through a long term relationship with another client, we were approached to create a website for a long-established business that had recently been taken over. The client was inspired by the racing stripes and retro look of the Gulf logo that Steve McQueen sported in the 1971 film, Le Mans. The business was CB Motors in Golders Green and it also began in 1971. With that history, part of the task was to create a look and feel that harked back to a different age of motoring. Our design partners, Hughes Design, came up with a number of ideas around this logo which resulted in signage and uniforms sporting the same design.

Website Optimisation

As with other websites we have designed and built recently, this WordPress website used the mobile menu on all devices. It was also optimised for mobile making it easy for users to make enquiries while out and about. We were able to make use of the very simple and customisable Ninja Form plugin to handle enquiries and to optimise pagespeed with WP Rocket

My Fitness Boutique – WordPress Gym Website

Launching any kind of business during a recession or global pandemic can be risky. Add to that restrictions on people meeting indoors and social distancing. The My Fitness Boutique gym in North London was established some time ago but was finally relaunched in 2021 after lockdowns were lifted in England. DJA, with our design partners, Hughes Design, developed a mobile-ready WordPress website that sought to convey the movement of exercise classes with the use of video in its home page and various gym activities throughout the website. The website also pulls in live data from a booking system API meaning class information is always up to date.

Simply Rhino Website Redesign

With our design partners, Hughes Design, we created a modern template-driven site in Joomla that enabled the quick creation of new content including a bespoke component for adding to their busy training and events schedule.
