Some Q's regarding the organisation of a wedding?

Right, me and my partner have decided that we are either going to get married in on October 2nd 2010 or May 7th 2011, the earlier date is depending on whether or not we can get the deposit ready for my dream wedding venue.

I just have a few questions regarding the registrar, do I need to check with them BEFORE I book the venue to ensure that there is a registrar available for that day? If I am getting married in a church do I still need a registrar?

Also, I want to download a wedding planner to keep up to date with the organisational side of things. I also want to get a wedding planner journal that I can take with me to dress fittings, meetings etc etc. Any ideas where to get a good one?

What is your best tip?

One last thing, does anyone have any unique ideas to make a wedding reception more original and fun for us and our guests?

Giving the Best Man’s speech at a wedding. Is that something that fills you with dread, or is it something that you expect to do at some point in your life. What would you do if tomorrow your best friend gives you a call to announce that he is going to get married to the girl he has been dating for the last couple of years, and he wants you to be the best man. He tells you he is confident he has made the right choice (in selecting you as his best man, not in selecting his partner for life) and will leave it up to you to come up with the perfect wedding speech. It’s a sudden announcement; the wedding is to be held in a matter of weeks. The pressure is on. How do you come up with the perfect wedding speech in such a short time? Is the Internet the answer?

Well consider this, do you think that a mass produced free wedding speech available to download from the Internet will go down well with the Bride and Groom’s friends and relatives at the wedding reception. The biggest single problem with free wedding speeches that are available on the Internet is that they are generic to try and appeal to a wide audience. The information in them is very general. Whereas you will want to use specific information that is directly relevant to the couple, which in turn will gain the interest of all those listening.

It is widely known that public speaking is one of those activities that creates anxiety in the deliverer. This is why many people do their best to avoid having to do it, particularly at an important function such as a wedding. The fear of messing up the happy couple’s big day is definitely an issue.

It’s a good idea to keep the speech short, don’t ramble on and on. Make it heartfelt and talk about your good times spent together as friends. Use little anecdotes about the groom and bride. It is always a winner to talk about how they met. Talk about when you met the bride for the first time (assuming you have met her before today). Obviously you will express your happiness at their decision and encourage the guests to do the same with the wedding toast.

It is never a good idea to start to preach to the audience. You are not the Minister. That job has already been done. So don’t get on to your soap box and start to lecture them or start giving them your advice on how to live their lives. Remember to talk about the happy memories you have, give personal stories, and offer your best wishes for the future.

There are bound to be guests at the reception who don’t know who you are, so at the beginning of your speech make sure you introduce yourself and speak about your relationship to the groom. What you are doing here is telling the audience why his has chosen you for his best man as apposed to anyone else. This will help to get the audience on your side, before you move on to toasting the happy couple.

Finally, if you are stuck for things to say, read out a romantic poem that is a favourite of either the bride or the groom. Let the audience know it is a favourite before you start. You may bring the entire room to tears. If so then you have delivered a perfect wedding speech.

But one look at the stacks of cards and envelopes will remind you there’s an important job to be done!

Assembling your invitations can seem like an overwhelming task, but it doesn’t need to be. Every component of your invitation ensemble has a purpose and a place. The following Wedding Stationery glossary will help you keep all of the parts of your wedding invitation straight and make assembly a breeze

Invitation: Informs guests of the date, time, and location of your ceremony, while also offering a first glimpse of the style of celebration you have planned. Invitations are typically mailed six weeks before the wedding date.

Inner Envelope: Holds the invitation and all necessary enclosures. It is addressed with the guest’s title and surname only and does not have glue on the flap.

Helpful Tip: Before you begin the addressing process, make sure to distinguish between the inner and outer envelopes and stack them separately to avoid mixing them up.

Reception Card: Used if your ceremony and reception will be held at different locations. This card includes the location of the reception and other information such as “Dinner,” “Cocktails,” and the like.

Response Card or R.S.V.P. Card: Provides a convenient way for your guests to respond to your invitation. Also, it serves as a handy way to keep a tally of who’s coming and who’s not.

Response Card Envelope: Usually pre-printed on the front with the host’s name and address to make it easy for guests to send their replies. As a polite gesture and to ensure timely replies, remember to apply a postage stamp.

Outer Envelope: The mailing envelope includes the guest’s full name and complete mailing address. It has glue on the flap for sealing.

Directions Card: Provides helpful driving directions for guests, with all major roads and landmarks noted. These cards should be designed in the same style as your other enclosures.

Accommodations Card: Mailed with your wedding invitations, these cards notify guests of hotel arrangements that have been secured for the wedding weekend.

Pew Card: Included with the invitations. These cards show specific pew numbers for guests who will be specially seated, and should be presented to the ushers as soon as the guests arrive at the ceremony.

At Home Card: A small enclosure printed with your new address and when you will begin to reside there. These cards may be included in either the wedding invitations or the announcements.

Table Assignment Card: Directs each guest to a specific table at the reception dinner. The cards are displayed at the entrance to the reception.

Place Card: Assigns each guest to a specific seat at the reception dinner. The cards are placed at the dining tables before the guests arrive.

Save-the-Date Card: Sent at least three months in advance to advise guests to mark their calendars for your wedding day, especially if you plan a holiday celebration or a destination wedding.

Announcement: A wedding announcement can be mailed the day of the wedding to those who were not invited to the wedding. It is especially useful if your guest list is limited and you want to share the good news with acquaintances you could not include.

Thank-You Note Card: Your personal stationery for all thank-you notes. Can be printed with your name, monogram, or the words “Thank You.”

How To Hire A Scottish Wedding Band

So, you are having a Scottish wedding and would like to hire a wedding band? Well, before you even start looking at bands, you should have a serious think about what type of music and band you would like at your wedding. This will save you a lot of time and ensure you hire the most suitable band for your wedding.

In Scotland, there are essentially four main types of bands you can choose for your wedding. Pop Covers, Ceilidh, Jazz, and Tribute Bands. Each band has it own advantages and disadvantages. So let us take a look at each type in more detail.

Pop Cover Bands
These are the normal types of wedding bands in Scotland and they play songs recorded and made famous by other artists. Most cover bands, who specialise in weddings, will play a wide range of hits from the 1960’s right up to current chart hits. As weddings comprise of a fairly broad range of people and ages, the cover band’s plan is to play a wide range of music that will keep everyone happy.
Although many cover bands may include a little bit of Ceilidh music or Jazz, they do not tend to specialise in these genres. The typical Pop Cover band will do about fours hours at a wedding and take a thirty-minute break.

Scottish Ceilidh Bands
Ceilidh Bands concentrate in providing Scottish ceilidh dances for for the wedding, such as The Gay Gordons, The Military Two-Step, and Strip The Willow etc. If the wedding party is from Scotland, then they will know the dances because most of the dances are taught to Scots when they are at school. However, if there are many people at the wedding who are not Scottish, then the band may have to teach the steps and call the dances (remind people what to do during the dance). The good news is that most of the dances are very easy to learn and can therefore be picked up very quickly.
Again, the typical Ceilidh band will play for about four hours at a wedding and take a thirty-minute break.

Jazz And Swing Bands
A good wedding Jazz Band will play a mixture of jazz standards and swing music e.g. Bobby Darin and Sinatra. Many good Jazz bands are very versatile and can include some Pop Covers and Ceilidh dances. However, their main forte is Jazz. The typical Jazz wedding band will again do about four hours at a wedding and take a thirty-minute break.

Tribute Bands
Whereas a Pop Cover Band plays covers from a wide range of artists, the typical Tribute band will concentrate in covering one particular band. This could be Abba, Robbie Williams, Take That, Slade, Queen – or any band that you could possibly think of. So, if you are a fan of a particular band, then a tribute band may be the ideal choice for you. Usually Tribute bands only do about two forty-five minute sets, so if you are having a tribute band, then you may have to hire another band or DJ to cover the last two hours at your wedding reception.

These then are the main types of bands that are popular for weddings in Scotland. Which band you choose will depend on the type of music you like and, just as importantly, the type of band you think your family and guests will like.

Do Some Research
The easiest way to find out if your choice will be acceptable to most guests is to do a little research. For example, if you really want a particular type of band, then ask your friends and family what they think. Do they like that type of music? Would they get and dance to that type of music?

By asking people you will be able to build up a picture of which type of band will be the most popular with your particular family and guests. The important thing to remember is that each wedding is different and the band that played at your friend’s wedding may not be the ideal choice for your wedding.
