Take yourself along to IWM Duxford on Tuesday 24 January 2012, when Britain’s best-preserved Second World War airfield will be hosting Flog It! the BBC TV show that regularly reaches an audience of 2 million viewers per programme – around 15% of the television audience.

The Valuation Day is rather like a treasure hunt: members of the public are invited to bring along the antiques and collectables they might be interested in selling. Once the item is valued, the owner and team of experts decide whether it should go forward to auction. If the item is chosen it is sold a few weeks later – often with the owner making a tidy sum! Everyone who goes along to the Valuation Day will receive a valuation, even if their antiques are not chosen to go forward to auction.

Previous programmes have seen a small cream jug sold at auction for £1,300; a ceramic bowl, bought for £4 at a car boot sale, achieving £1,500 and a lady in Aberdeen who sold a Shelley tea set for a huge £3,400! More recently, Flog It! surprised a gentleman who brought in a ceremonial cup made from Rhino horn; it later sold for £44,000!

So, if you’ve ever wondered how much those boot sale bargains or clutter in the loft might be worth, now is your chance to find out.

Presented by Paul Martin, Flog It! will be at IWM Duxford on Tuesday 24 January 2012 from 9.30am until

4.00pm. The auction will take place on Tuesday 21 February 2012 at Rowley’s Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers and the programme will be broadcast in 2012 as part of Flog It!’s eleventh series. www.bbc.co.uk

Admission will be free for visitors with items for valuation and those attending with them.

Standard admission rates apply for visitors to the museum. IWM Duxford has a fascinating history that dates back to the First World War. Its story reflects the landmark achievements made in aviation history. Duxford is Europe’s premier aviation museum, where historic buildings intersperse with state-of-the-art exhibition halls, including AirSpace and the American Air Museum. Historic aircraft can regularly be seen taking to the skies from Duxford’s wartime airfield. Through the rich displays of aircraft and the powerful stories of the men and women involved, we tell the story of the impact of aviation on the nature of war, on people’s lives and on the social and economic history of the region. With one of the finest collections of tanks, military vehicles and artillery in the UK, the museum also shows the impact of technological development on war and conflict.

InMe are an alternative rock band based in Brentwood, Essex, who have released four highly successful studio albums spawning a number of Top 40 UK singles and spent years of touring playing great shows and festivals around the UK, Europe and the world.
The band have toured with the likes of Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, Pendulum, Deftones, Serj Tankian, Staind, Feeder and Biffy Clyro; and have also played main stages and packed tents at respected festivals such as Reading, Sonisphere, Download & Summer Breeze.

The InMe of today is a very different animal to that of their 2003 debut album “Overgrown Eden”. Their continued evolution has maintained a fiercely loyal fanbase and challenged them further as musicians with the release of every album. Following on from “White Butterfly” (2005), “Daydream Anonymous” (2007) and “Herald Moth” (2009) the band released “Phoenix – The Best of InMe” in 2010, an album that celebrated their career so far and featured exclusive tracks that showcased their progression from early days, when they had been thrust into the spotlight as teens (they originally named themselves Drowned).

Over seven years on from first discovering the band, Kerrang! Magazine witnessed a full tent at Sonisphere Festival as “fans old and new celebrate a band who lionheartedly refuse to die”. Later in 2010 InMe packed out The Relentless Garage in London for four album shows to crown a year that proved beyond doubt that they were alive, well and very much wanted by the UK alternative rock scene.

Last year, InMe kept quiet until their triumphant return to Sonisphere Festival (held at Knebworth): this time the tent was bigger, and once again full to capacity, as 5000 people crammed into Bohemia to see them rock as hard as ever. The temptation could have been to head straight out on tour, but the band had been developing their sound for their 5th studio album entitled “The Pride”, which will be released in Februay 2012. This will coincide witha 35-date tour spanning the entire of the UK and Ireland until the end of March where London’s o2 Academy Islington will host the final show of the tour.

“The Pride” will be released via Pledge Music, an innovative approach that puts the artists and their fans in control of the development of the album. Having seen the overwhelming support frontman Dave McPherson received for his solo album in March 2011 via the same route, InMe felt that their fans would want to be involved in how “The Pride” was released.

Fans make pledges to the website, which enables the band to connect with fans, raise money to promote the album, and also make a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity that personally means a lot to the band. Once you pledge you gain access to all of the exclusive updates which include loads of free music including songs that won’t be heard elsewhere, behind-the-scenes videos, photos, blogs, lyrics, competitions & more!

You can also pledge for an extensive range of incentives including personalised songs, house party gigs, handwritten lyric sheets & loads of other signed stuff, merch, an album playback party & loads more!

The 2012 East Anglian Game & Country Fair, will take place on Saturday the 28th & Sunday the 29th April, at The Norfolk Showground, Norwich, with even more new attractions, demonstrations and stands for visitors to enjoy.

This year, there is a new gardening and conservation area, with various demonstrations and workshops taking place by local experts. Tim Marshall, Head Gardener at Holkham Hall will be running a Gardeners’ question time. This will include an opportunity for visitors to go and receive horticultural help and advice for problems in the garden. A plant propagation workshop will also demonstrate how visitors can produce their own new and healthy plants for free. His workshop on ‘garden pests and diseases’ will prove invaluable in giving advice dealing with factors affecting vegetables and fruits.

The EcoVillage is an area dedicated to promoting green living. They have something for everyone from renewable energy and cars to skin care and garden furniture. The EcoVillage is a great place for visitors to come and learn about living a greener lifestyle in an area which promotes only sustainable and ethical companies.

There will be several new arena displays including The UK Polocrosse Association, The British Racing School, hilarious sheep racing, tug of war competitions run by the British Tug of War Federation and Australian Horseman Jason Webb with his horse behavioural workshops.

Other new attractions around the showground will include The UK National Horseboarding Championship. Originally developed in 2004 by Equestrian Stunt Team Performer Daniel Fowler-Prime, Horseboarding is the latest, and arguably the most exciting, equine sport around. Attracting interest from across the globe and with a continually increasing following throughout the UK this is a sport not to be missed. Each team consists of three members; a Horse, a Horse Rider and a Board Rider. Two teams race, head to head, over a 100m drag strip reaching speeds of over 37mph! The competition is fast and furious as every team pushes themselves and their boards to the limit in order to gain the title of National Horseboarding Champion. The 2012 season looks set to continue that trend and push the boundaries even further. Running the series over seven events, covering the length and breadth of the country, the Extreme Horse Riding Association is predicting a spectacular display of skill and courage in 2012. The 2012 Horseboarding Championship season will begin at the East Anglian Game & Country Fair in April.

Woodland Ways Bushcraft & Survival, one of the largest bushcraft course providers in the UK, will be demonstrating their vast knowledge of bushcraft & survival techniques. There will be opportunities throughout the day to get ‘hands on’ and learn some skills for yourself. They will also be running new ‘Pigeon Plucking’ competitions on their stand over the weekend. Find out how quickly you can prepare a pigeon for the table without using a knife.

Norfolk Poultry Club will be attending with their exhibition of purebred poultry, waterfowl & eggs and The Norfolk Smallholders will be running smallholding talks and question time on their stand.

On Saturday 28th April you can watch the Young Farmers MacNab Challenge, sponsored by BASC, Honda, EASI and Morton ATV of Great Massingham. The day will begin with a team of four from each Young Farmers Club catching a Salmon (fly fishing) followed by a Honda quad transfer during which their ATV handling skills will be tested to the shooting area to bag a “Brace of Grouse” (laser shooting) and finally another quad handling test on their way to “stalk a Red Deer Stag” (Archery), all under the guidance and advice of experienced professionals.

Arena events include 6 times FITASC Sporting World Champion, European Champion and English Open Champion John Bidwell who will be performing his off the hip shooting demonstration in the main arena and Savage Skills the UK’s leading freestyle mountain bike stunt team will perform their interactive and jaw dropping ‘Ultimate Air Show’ display. There will also be an Owl Display, Mark Turnbull’s horse logging, a sheep dog and duck display and the West Norfolk Hunt’s horse and hound parade.

Youngsters will be really excited to join in with the new ‘explore, experience and learn’ section of the show. They will be able to make pine cone bird feeders, create butterfly and bat shapes with the North Norfolk District Council and the Woodland Trust. The RSPB will be running various childrens’ activities on their stand including making flowers and dragonflies, fat ball making, bug bingo and making bird masks, whilst learning about birds and wildlife. Other stands in this area will include Active Norfolk, Welly Wanging, Tug of War, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, BeWILDerwood, farm animals and The Seal & Bird Rescue Trust who will be bringing their snakes and lizards enclosure.

Norwich City Community Sports Foundation is pleased to announce that they will be returning to the game fair with their state of the art inflatable ‘speed kick’ machine. Norwich City Community Sports Foundation is a charity that helps people achieve their goals by delivering quality, innovative services through football and sport.

Get involved and ‘have a go’ at a range of country activities from clay shooting with John Bidwell’s High Lodge instructors or enter the 40-bird re-entry shooting competition. Fly fishing with the Salmon and Trout Association, ferret racing and archery to mountain boarding with the MBS team, mountain biking or have a go at the free Treasure Trail around the show. Just solve the clues to win some great prizes. Take a helicopter pleasure flight over the showground, try the air rifle range, hold an owl or take a ride in a Landrover on the off road 4×4 course. Hunstanton Watersports will be running Powerkiting taster sessions at the show where you can have a go.

The game fair country kitchen has a great new line up with a variety of cookery workshops and demonstrations taking place over the weekend from a selection of local chefs, including Celebrity Chef Chris Coubrough, TV Chef Franck Pontais and Sam Bryant from the award winning Stratton’s Hotel plus many more. We have a wide variety of exhibitors in the food hall from Norfolk and across the UK bringing unusual and mouthwatering food and drink to the show for our visitors to sample, enjoy and purchase.

There are over 300 shopping stands with a wide variety of products, live music from the Sheringham Shantymen, Singer/Songwriter Rhys Aliker and the Glenmoriston Pipe Band plus the main bar will be serving a great selection of local beers and drinks over the weekend with a barbecue night on the Saturday with live music from Lee Vasey.

Dogs on leads are welcome and there is plenty for them to do at the show! Dock Dogs from America will be returning running the Big Air Wave competitions. Mid Norfolk Gun Dog Club will be running the Gun Dog Scurry competitions and ‘have a go’ over the weekend. Enter your dog into the Dog Agility and Jumping competitions and ‘have a go’ arenas, the Pet Dog Show or even the popular Terrier & Lurcher Show which take place on Sunday at 11am, which will be a qualifier for all major championships as well as the East Anglian Championship. Simon Whitehead will be running his ‘Dog & Ferret’ arena along with Lurcher specialist Jim Greenwood. A dog crèche is also available at the show run by Samsalin Dog Rescue so if you need to leave your dog somewhere safe for a couple of hours you can.

The perfect cure for those winter blues, wrap up warm and soak up the fresh air, wonderful sights and fragrances on a winter walk at a National Trust place near you. With some of our most spectacular landscapes looking their best at this time of year, here are our top five places to enjoy the crisp winter weather in:

Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire
Set your winter alight with a walk full of fiery colour and delicious scent. Anglesey Abbey’s Winter Garden is one of the joys of the season. At a time of year when gardens are generally past their best, this area comes into its own and provides a wonderful source of inspiration and tranquillity, delighting the senses and bringing to life the true beauty of winter. For almost a quarter of a mile, the path winds its way through a stunning array of colour and some 150 species of plants, chosen for their attractiveness in winter. The carefully arranged groups of fiery Cornus stems, coppiced Willow and Whitewashed Bramble, Mahonias, Sarcococca and Chimonanthus sit alongside wonderful coloured tree barks.

Blickling Estate, Norfolk
Even on the greyest of winter days, a historical walk around Blickling Park can beat the winter blues. With all-weather paths, plenty of seats and no steep hills, this certainly makes a great walk for all abilities. Whilst out in the park, catch glimpses back at the magnificent Jacobean Hall across the lake, which was built to impress. Look out too for the Tower, originally built for the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire and his guests to watch horse races, now a comfortable holiday cottage. Then there’s the mausoleum, a pyramid which would be more fitting for Egypt, but was built to commemorate the death of the 2nd Earl.

Flatford, Suffolk/Essex border
Explore the picturesque Stour Valley and Dedham Vale made famous by the paintings of 18th-century England’s foremost landscape artist. John Constable painted many idyllic views of the area in his famous six-foot canvases, scenes which remain easily recognisable today. The little riverside hamlet of Flatford is the setting for some of Constable’s most famous paintings, such as The Hay Wain. But also, look out for the Cattawade Marshes, where the freshwater of the Stour meets the tidal estuary, a great place to spot waterfowl and waders. Why not call into the tearooms, whilst you’re passing? The nearby villages of East Bergholt and Dedham are also worth a visit.

Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire
An extra layer or two, stout walking boots or wellies and a pair of binoculars are all you need to discover the amazing wildlife spectacular at Wicken Fen. Intricate dew laden spiders’ webs stand out amongst the reed lined banks of Wicken Lode. Train your binoculars on the reedbeds in anticipation of seeing one of our most elusive and endangered wetland birds, the bittern, which are easier to spot in winter. As the sun finally dips to the River Cam in the West, the fen is bathed in a crimson glow; the distinctive sails of Wicken’s historic wind-pump silhouetted on the skyline – the perfect end to a magical winter’s day.

Dunstable Downs, Bedfordshire
Enjoy the beautiful Bedfordshire countryside on an exhilarating walk across the Dunstable Downs. Soar above a breathtaking landscape, sculpted over time, decorated by nature and enjoyed by generations. Along the way, discover diverse wildlife, Iron Age hill forts and burial mounds. Don’t forget to pop into the Chilterns Gateway Centre for some delicious food with a view; you might need the sit down after your walk!

Cambridge band Sunday Driver blend together Indian and British influences from past and present – with the help of a pumpkin, a melon and the skin of a goat!

Formed in 2000, the band have grown from a small acoustic act to a riotous 7-piece band, playing headline and support gigs in the UK and abroad, creating ground-breaking music that blends contemporary sounds with Eastern influences and instrumentation. The band is becoming well-known on the growing Steampunk scene in the US and UK. In December 2010 they received funding from Arts Council England to develop their live show and record their next album. The album, In the City of Dreadful Night, takes inspiration from Victorian London and Raj-era Calcutta, and tracks range from hypnotic to bittersweet. From the opening thrum of Gayatri Mantra, a repurposed Sanskrit prayer, to the haunting piano strains of closing track, Naked Bodies, the album showcases the band’s original song-writing and wonderfully creative arrangements.

Building on the success of the album, Sunday Driver has played increasingly high-profile gigs in the UK and abroad, ranging from arts venues to large melas and outdoor music festivals.

Professional dog trainer and behaviour consultant Karen Wild shares a few tips with us…

What’s the key to understanding your dog? Most people forget that a dog will always behave in a way that helps it to survive with as much comfort as possible. This really is the key. Punishment and supposedly ‘dominating’ a dog as a ‘pack leader’ is an old-fashioned theory.

What are the causes of dog behavioural problems? The number one cause for behavioural problems in dogs I see is lack of early social contact with other dogs and with life in general. Puppies need to experience a lot of things before they reach 12 weeks of age and then continually until they are at least two years old, if they are to grow up as calm adults. If they do not get out and about, they end up more like wild animals, fearful of every new experience. This can be one of the underlying causes of aggression.

How do you choose a puppy? You must choose a puppy from a family home breeder where you can see both parents. I would never a get a puppy from a place where they are raised in kennels with many breeds on offer. Just because a puppy has a Kennel Club registration doesn’t mean it is going to be a nice healthy dog. I have assessed puppy temperaments before now, but I think looking at the puppy’s breed, eventual size, parents’ behaviour and where they were born and raised is just as important. Sadly I have seen puppy farmed puppies and they are extremely damaged little dogs. Look for a puppy that has been brought up within the home, with children around if you have youngsters of your own.

What are the five basic rules to getting your dog to behave well? 1 Socialise, socialise, socialise, carefully and thoroughly, and from an early age and give them plenty of exercise. 2 Teach your dog basic control exercises such as sit, down, walking on lead and coming back to you. 3 Understand that dogs are not ‘naughty’. Often they are scared, or confused and you may not have trained them properly! 4 Patience. Every animal trainer I know has bags of it. 5 Find a good, qualified and registered dog trainer or behaviourist who will help you when you hit on a problem.

How were you able to help Davina McCall with her dogs? Davina is a great Mum and a responsible dog owner too. She asked for my advice on her young puppy, Bo, when playing with her children, and how to help them get along. All owners of new pups should seek expert help and follow her great example.

Handmade Neapolitan-style pizza is quickly baked in our wood-fired oven using fresh local produce and carefully sourced regional Italian ingredients. The menu also offers a tempting selection of antipasti, pasta, salads and daily specials, including weekend wood-fired roasts. Although Neapolitan in spirit, Lucca Enoteca shares its name with the charming Tuscan commune in central Italy. Owners Sherri Singleton and David McKay (who previously ran the Stour Bay Café on the same site until 1997) wanted to recreate an authentic wood-fire destination in the UK, so Sherri spent time in the kitchen with the ‘Maestro of Pizza’, Enzo Coccia at his famous La Notizia pizzeria in Naples. Often cited as serving the best pizza in Italy, Enzo passed on many tips and recipes that you’ll find used at this fabulous Italian restaurant. High Street, Manningtree 01206 390044 www.luccafoods.co.uk
