The terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Ocarina Networks operates in the domain of optimization technology for heavy-duty storage. The company’s offerings have the potential to free up 30% to 75% of existing storage capacities, releasing network bandwidth, power, cooling, data center space and management, resulting in CapEx and OpEx savings. In today’s business environment where data is largely unstructured, the company’s technologies can make a significant difference.

The acquisition of the company will allow Dell to integrate Ocarina’s products into its existing deduplication solutions portfolio.

Ocarina Networks was founded by Murli Thirumale in 2007, who was its CEO at the time of the acquisition. The company had been a vendor for Dell for over a year. Post acquisition, Dell plans to invest in further engineering and sales capabilities of Ocarina, and would not immediately move the company’s operations from its present premises. The present management team is also likely to remain intact.

Santa Clara, California-headquartered Intel Corporation has posted the financial results for the second quarter of 2010.

The company has notched up revenue of USD 10.8 billion, which is up by USD 2.7 billion over its revenue for Q2 2009. Operating income zoomed to USD 4.0 billion which is USD 4.0 billion more than the income in the corresponding Q2 of 2009. As a result, the net income has come to USD 2.9 billion, with an EPS of 51 cents which makes Q2 2010 a watershed quarter for Intel, in its 42 year history.

The company’s sales are in tune with trend in the market: more mobile microprocessors are being sold than desktop processors. Server microprocessors too sold higher by as much as 13% as compared to Q1 2010. The company has spend USD 3.25 billion in research and development, as well as in mergers and acquisitions.

Intel is at the forefront of microprocessor manufacturing. The company is in direct competition with AMD, and it shook off a long-drawn litigation with the latter in the last quarter through a one-time settlement payment that saw a dip in its reserves in the earlier quarter.

Total revenue for Q2 2010 was USD 23.7 billion, which is 2% more than the total revenue reported for Q2 2009. The net income reported for Q2 2010 was USD 3.4 billion. This is 9% more than the USD 3.2 billion net income reported for Q2, 2009. This has yielded a diluted earnings per share of USD 2.61, which is 13% more than the EPS in the corresponding Q2 of 2009.

These computations have led to pre-tax income of USD 4.6 billion.

Of the different income streams, the company experienced the highest jump in Business Analytics of 14%, while the streams of software and services posted an increment of just 2%.

In the second quarter, IBM signed services contracts that notched up USD 12.3 billion. However, contracts for outsourcing services saw a dip by 19% to USD 6.5 billion. New-business outsourcing was more than extensions of older contracts. Contracts for transactional services (such as consulting, integrated technology services, and the like) too saw a dip by 3% to USD 5.8 billion.

Hewlett-Packard Development Company has announced a new set of services for its self-publishing web platform, MagCloud.

These new services include:

- shipping to destinations around the world, which means that a customer now has the option to order a single issue of any publication on MagCloud.

- new options for binding hard copies, which means that magazines with pagecount more than 300 can be printed with perfection.

- and an application that enables consuming digital material on the iPad, which is available for free from App Store. There is also an option to buy a hardcopy version of the content. This implies that any publisher can now offer content in both digital and print format to iPad users, using the MagCloud platform.

The MagCloud publishing ecosystem provides facilities to publishers who want to save on preproduction costs or the hassle of minimum print runs. Because the market is moving towards more and more niche, targeted readership, the platform provides people to experiment with their chosen target with minimal investment.

The platform also creates a level ground for new and novice publishers who may have little experience, little or no reach and minimal capital.

The company has reported revenue of USD 15.7 billion for the quarter, compared to the revenue of USD 9.73 billion for Q3 2009. Another notable feature was the launch of iPhone 4, the next generation of the smartphone mobile from Apple that has revolutionized the mobile industry.

Kinect is an add-on for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console. It features an RGB camera, depth sensor and multi-array microphone. When running, the device captures full-body 3D motion in order to recognize gestures, and it also recognizes faces and voices. Because of these capabilities, users can interact with the Xbox 360 console without the conventional game controller, but instead use gestures and spoken commands to do so. For instance, when the console displays a ball, instead of pressing a button on the controller, the player has to simply gesture a kick. Alternatively, instead of pressing a button to browse through a music list appearing on the display, the user may simply wave their hand to flip through the list.

Kinect together with Xbox 360 is being offered by Microsoft at a price of USD 299. This includes the console, Kinect Sensor and a package of games called “Kinect Adventures”.

AIX 7, as it is called, is an open standards-based UNIX operating system owned by the company.

The entire series of AIX is designed for optimal performance on IBM’s POWER servers. The new version of AIX is now optimized for the latest generation of POWER servers known as POWER7. At the same time, AIX 7 is backward compatible, so users may port it on earlier generations of processors such as POWER6, POWER5 and POWER4. Concurrently, applications developed on earlier versions of AIX, such as AIX 6, AIX 5 and even 32-bit apps can run on AIX 7 without having to go through the time-consuming process of recompiling.

The company has also provided a new facility to install an entire older AIX version into a Workload partition on AIX 7. This is like running an operating system within an operating system. The advantage to the user is that they can buy POWER7 servers with AIX 7 running on them, and quickly move their entire older software to the new hardware with minimal effort.

A new design platform has been announced that will enable the design and manufacture of advanced mobile and embedded devices.

This platform has come about through technology collaboration between the following 5 industry giants: ARM, IBM, Samsung, GLOBAL FOUNDRIES and Synopsys. The new platform builds upon a manufacturing collaboration that was already in place between IBM, Samsung and GLOBAL FOUNDRIES, and they called it the “Common Platform”. The Common Platform model features 28nm, 32nm, 45nm, 65nm and 90nm process technologies in domains of high-k metal gating, 193nm immersion lithography and ultra-low-k dielectrics.

The idea behind the Common Platform model was to enable customers of chips to source their designs to multiple 300mm foundries without having to make major changes in their design work. To the same Common Platform, the other companies have contributed with their unique expertise.

ARM has contributed low-power processor architecture and optimized suite of physical IP, including standard cells, power management kit, memory compilers and interface IP. Synopsys has contributed Lynx Design System and DesignWare portfolio of interface IP, which reduce risk and overall design costs.

The collaboration has already come out with 10 test chips in 32 and 28nm HKMG process technology, validating the platform in all its dimensions.

The new platform is expected to be a standard for manufacturing 28nm low-powered HKMG semiconductors for the next generation of mobile devices and embedded machines.

Los Gatos, California-headquartered Netflix Inc has announced that it will deploy two of Microsoft’s technologies – PlayReady and PIFF (protected interoperable file format) in new Netflix-ready devices and applications. These devices will be launched in the market in the coming few months of 2010.

The advantage of this deployment is that subscribers of Netflix can watch Netflix streams over a still wider range of devices such as Internet TVs, Blu-ray disc players, home theater systems, video game consoles and the like.

PlayReady is Microsoft’s content protection technology that is flexible, reliable and scalable. Netflix has already been using this technology since 2007 when it had launched its ready-device program. Netflix has incorporated the DRM into its architecture from the very beginning, and the latest announcement apparently is another step that tightens the coupling.

PlayReady is especially useful for service providers, mobile and network operators and device manufacturers who are engaged in the business of providing digital entertainment services across devices and software applications, such as videos, games and images.

It was very obviously an idea whose time had come. The iPhone was proving to be too small to do any serious work other than reading mails and chatting, and the netbook was still a tad bulky. There was a definite niche between the two form factors. And that is where the iPad came in.

And boy! Has this new gadget taken the geek world by storm! Across the spectrum, almost everybody is going for the device. Since its launch on April 3, it is slightly over 60 days, and the sale of iPad has topped 2 million already. The purchase is not happening within a particular domain or culture, but is very universal and has touched every level of society everywhere. The company has been working very hard to fulfill customer orders pouring in from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Come July, and the company will open new sales fronts in a lot more countries.

Very soon, the 1.5 pound thin-plate-like-device will become as ubiquitous as the cellular phone. Perhaps the netbook’s run has come to an end?

A new digital publication viewing technology has been brought about by a customer and Adobe, using Adobe’s InDesign CS5 and other publishing technologies. This new technology changes the way magazine readers will view content on the computer, especially the new devices such as Apple’s iPad.

The customer in question is Conde Nast’s WIRED magazine. The magazine recently debuted its digital edition designed for the form factor of Apple’s iPad. Its June issue has been built using Adobe’s digital viewer software and can be downloaded from Apple’s iTune App Store.

This new technology changes the way a magazine gets read on the computer. Readers can now experience video content, slide-shows, 360 degree images and rotate content in vertical and horizontal modes. Magazine content can now be explored using touch gestures, and can also be zoomed-out to view the content in one glance. This takes the magazine format on the computer from its present style of being a clone of the hard copy version.

The new technology also changes the way advertisements will be delivered to readers. Advertisements will be more interactive and also integrate seamlessly with the content, allowing more bang for the advertising buck.

The name of the company is “True ROI Accountability”, or TRA.

TRA Inc is located in New York City, New York. The company on its website claims to be the first outfit that provides a platform that computes the true return on investment on advertising carried out by companies in various media. The company has developed a product called “Media TRAnalytics” which generates customizable online reports for its subscribers. This it does by cross-tabulating real-time data from TV digital set-top boxes (DSTB) from cable as well as TiVo, with the actual household product purchasing data from frequent shopper cards. The company has in place 370,000 households where their TV exposure and their purchases are matched. When this data beams on the screens of the companies’ screens, they can take an informed decision about how and where to spend their advertising dollar to translate into their product / service sales.

For Intel, the investment is part of an USD 18.2 million Series-C round, which includes participation from existing investors Arbitron and WPP.
