Well I have returned from Brussels after my first attempt at the CCIE Lab Exam in Routing and Switching in Brussels and sadly on this occasion I did not bring home my digits.

Simple fact I was not fast enough on the troubleshooting and I did not verify everything as I configured which caused me some issues later in the lab.

So I am booked again for August 9th and I will be spending a few solid months on my troubleshooting and improving my exam technique, getting slicker with the configuration and verification.

There will be a lot of posts coming on configuring a technology and then the commands used to verify, probably some on troubleshooting as well!

If you are interested I made a small video of my journey to Brussels from Southampton, so if you are travelling to Brussels from the UK it might help!

CCIE Lab Exam Routing & Switching Attempt #1 Brussels

Basically you need to get the Eurostar from St Pancras, and when purchasing your ticket get the extra bit that allows you travel within Brussels, however on my train nobody checked the tickets!

Once you get into Brussels Midi which is just under 2 hours from London you need to take an internal train in the direction of Louvain, after about 6 stops get off at Diegem go down the platform and go under the underpass and you will pop out in front of the NH Airport Hotel – which is only a few minutes walk to Cisco – The Video will explain it all.

The Cisco Embedded Event Manager is a powerful tool which can pretty much do anything you want it do.

I will go through a few simple embedded event manager examples and step through the configuration line by line.

Embedded Event Manager Example #1

This EEM example will monitor if an interface goes down and will generate a custom syslog message.

There are three steps to creating this EEM applet.

1: Create the applet and give it a name
2: Tell the applet what to look out for
3: What do you want the router to do when it sees what you have defined in step 2 – simple!

Ok, so we are going to watch out for anybody shutting down interface f0/0

For this example I just have one router fired up in GNS3

Before you start creating the applet, you need to discover the syslog msg you are looking for, to get that just shut down the interface.

R6(config)#int f0/0
R6(config-if)#shut
*Mar 1 00:50:56.719: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface FastEthernet0/0, changed state to administratively down
*Mar 1 00:50:57.719: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0/0, changed state to down

You now need to select the important info and enclose it in quotes and add .* the beginning to ignore the timestamp and a .* at the end to cover any other text that may show

“.*%LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface FastEthernet0/0, changed state to administratively down.*”

This is the syslog pattern you will be watching for copy this ready for the configuration

Step 1 – create the applet and give it a name

R6(config)#event manager applet INTERFACE_SHUT_DOWN
R6(config-applet)#

Step 2 – tell the router what you are looking for – event syslog pattern and the paste the line from above

R6(config-applet)#event syslog pattern “.*%LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface FastEthernet0/0, changed state to administratively down.*”
R6(config-applet)#

Step 3 – what do you want the router to do when it sees this syslog pattern – for this example we are going to bring the interface back up again. And generate a syslog message saying LEAVE F0/0 ALONE!

R6(config-applet)#action 1.0 cli command “enable”
R6(config-applet)#action 2.0 cli command “conf t”
R6(config-applet)#action 2.0 cli command “int f0/0″
R6(config-applet)#action 3.0 cli command “no shut”
R6(config-applet)#$syslog priority informational msg “LEAVE F0/0 ALONE!”
R6(config-applet)#end

Now let’s test it

R6(config)#int f0/0
R6(config-if)#shut
R6(config-if)#
*Mar 1 01:05:50.755: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface FastEthernet0/0, changed state to administratively down
*Mar 1 01:05:51.043: %HA_EM-6-LOG: INTERFACE_SHUT_DOWN: LEAVE F0/0 ALONE!
R6(config-if)#
*Mar 1 01:05:51.059: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by vty0
R6(config-if)#
*Mar 1 01:05:52.983: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEthernet0/0, changed state to up
R6(config-if)#

It works! – This is a very simple example but it shows the power of EEM and the possibilities are endless.

You can configure it to track config changes, routing updates, adjacencies

You can also configure the router to email you when any of these events occur.

Check out my other posts below for more examples

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has been wishing me all the best for my lab exam over the last week.
I had no idea that so many people followed my blog!
After next Friday I am planning a big post (whatever happens!) to lay out my journey this far.
What I have been studying, how I have been stuyding, what works and what doesn’t
For the last few days I have been picking random IP Services and just doing mini labs and reading the Doc CD
Then next week I will be doing a few more full labs
Sunday at 6pm UK time I will be watching Brian’s latest PFR vSeminar
http://blog.ine.com/2013/04/16/new-performance-routing-pfr-vseminar/

Thursday morning I am on the Eurostar overnight at the NH Brussels Hotel and then Friday morning 8am Lab time!

I am also going to be joined by another guy I met on the London Bootcamp who is making his second attempt – so we will be comparing study notes on the train!

When faced with a troubleshooting ticket involving MPLS you need to clear the basics first to ensure that everything is working from a Label Distribution perspective.

First establish IGP connectivity between all the routers.

Can you ping all the loopbacks?

Are there /32 loopbacks configured on every router and advertised into IGP?

Is CEF enabled?

Is MPLS IP enabled on the required interfaces?

Have the routers discovered any LDP neighbors?

I have put together this quick list of commands that I would run on each router to quicky verify that Label Distribution is working

sh run | inc ip cef
sh run | inc mpls ip
sh mpls interface
sh mpls ldp disco
sh mpls ldp neigh

You’ve all been there, you just want to get 30 minutes to focus and get a job done. All you can hear is people talking about football, the meeting they’ve just been to, whose going out with who etc etc.

Open plan offices are great for colaboration but they do have their drawbacks with background noise.

I remember my first job in IT there was three of us who worked from the IT room which was behind a real door which we could shut and lock when we didn’t want to be disturbed. We could escape the office and the only way to contact us was with the phone.

Nowadays in the open plan office if somebody wants to come and speak to you they just come straight up to your desk, normally with a comedy “knock knock!” You have to stop what you are doing have the conversation and then re-focus on what you were doing.

A guy I used to work with had a system that if his tie was over his shoulder do not disturb him. It worked. It was understood in our office if Dave (not real name!) had his tie laid over his shoulder don’t speak to him. After an hour or so he would finish what he was working on and then make a coffee and adjust his tie.

I prefer the headphones solution. I own a pair of Bose QC15 noise cancelling headphones which are awesome. They are the best pair of headphones I have ever owned and they really do cancel the noise. originally designed to be used on a plane they work equally well in a noisy office.

The funny thing is people just think you’re listening to music and still come over and do the “knock knock” on your desk.

When I have my headphones on this is my decision for “Intentional Isolation” I’ts not rude, it’s work
“Respect the privacy zones of others”

This brings me to the amazing work of Designer Jason Franzen he has setup a site www.memorandoms.com with the slogan. Fixing the world one MEMO at a time.

Looking through his memos the headphones one struck a chord with me, but there are many more on there and some which will resonate with you. You can support his project via another great website I came across http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/291480635/memo-randoms

The kickstarter project gives anyone with an idea the chance to launch it on this site and get support via people pledging money. You get the chance to own something that is brand new and just designed and the designer / inventor gets an injection of cash to get his idea off the ground

I might be getting me a set of these! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1975231304/engrain-tactile-keys?ref=search

“How to Shutdown Port Juniper EX4200″

The answer is very simple but not having much experience on the Juniper switches I was a bit stuck. In Cisco I would have just done a shut on the port, in Junos you have to set the port to a disable state and then commit the config, like this

{master:0}[edit]
roger@Switch1# set interfaces ge-5/0/42 disable

Then you have to commit the change

{master:0}[edit]
roger@Switch1# commit
configuration check succeeds
fpc1:
commit complete
fpc2:
commit complete
fpc4:
commit complete
fpc5:
commit complete

To enable the port you then have to delete this command

{master:0}[edit]
perkinr@Switch1# delete interfaces ge-5/0/42 disable

You could have used the GUI but I still prefer the CLI

Cisco
conf t
Int Gi1/0/1 shut
no shut

Juniper
config
set interfaces ge-5/0/42 disable
commit
delete interfaces ge-5/0/42 disable
commit

How much sleep do you need is a question I have never actually got an answer to. This question has become very important at this point in my life as I am studying for one of the hardest certifications in IT the ccie lab exam.
The exam itself is 8 hours long so I will need to be awake and alert for the duration. As the exam date gets closer I am putting more and more time into studying and buring the midnight oil. Not getting to bed before 1am most nights.
Now my question is where is the point between getting enough sleep to function and utilising my study time to the max. So firstly the big question is;

How much sleep do you need a night?

Taken from a study by Time Magazine, full article here.

Studies show that people who sleep between 6.5 hr. and 7.5 hr. a night, as they report, live the longest. And people who sleep 8 hr. or more, or less than 6.5 hr., they don’t live quite as long.

How much sleep is healthy?

This brings us onto the topic of how much sleep is healthy? i.e are you affecting your health by not getting enough sleep? There does not seem to be as much research about this as it seems to be all relative you as a person and what works for you.

Napping

This brings me to my final bit of research and that was to discover that something I have been doing for many years is actually very good for you and is probably the way to go! This article here says that a 20 minute nap during the day is very benefical and is something everyone should be doing.

I would be very interested to hear from not only anybody who is studying for an exam and struggling between getting enough sleep and doing ennough studying. But also anyone with any tips on how to sleep better. Please reply in the comments below.

Whilst configuring an ASA5505 for a remote access VPN solution I hit this error which had me scratching my head for a while.

%ASA-4-313004: Denied ICMP type=0, from laddr 172.16.24.2 on interface external to 192.168.1.49: no matching session

%ASA-4-313004: Denied ICMP type=0, no matching session

172.16.24.0/24 is the Client VPN pool

192.168.1.0/24 is the internal server pool

After googling the error and going through the cisco documentation it relates to asymmetric routing. This had me scratching my head even more.

Then I discovered that in the network I was working on there are multiple firewalls and the server is trying to reply to the ping out of a different firewall. So the ping comes in through the ASA550 onto the server and then the server is going back out of it’s default gateway which is another firewall.

The solution is to fix the asymmetric routing: This can be done one of two ways

1: Change the default gateway on the server to be the VPN firewall. The issue with this is you will have to configure that firewall to allow internet access for that server.

2: On the default gateway of the server (router or firewall) add a route to point the traffic for the 172.16.24.0 towards the ASA providing the VPN.

Easy when you know the answer.

Roger
