Hi All,

The EU cosmetic directive is becoming a regulation and being updated in July 2013 and many US brands are having to update their legal paperwork as unlike in the US to sell cosmetics in the UK & EU you must have certain paperwork to show that the products you are selling and their ingredients are safe for use.

As a scientist and coming from a regulatory background, I am happy that we have regulations like this in EU. Something as simple as controlling the quality of a product between batches is important for the consumer.

EU Regulations: We Have To Support UK Beauty Brands And Companies.

A number of EU based hair and skincare distributors have announced that cosmetics from the United States that do not comply with the new EU regulations are prohibited from being sold in the EU after the 11^th of July 2013. US brands that do not meet the regulations are expected to undergo further testing and list all ingredients in order to be deemed EU compliant. This can be a lengthy and costly process which may see some US brands not returning to the EU as the costs involved in becoming EU compliant (plus the distribution costs and taxes), would make the EU an unfavourable market to cater to.

There is considerable hype around US brands getting introduced into the UK. We associate US brands (particularly hair products) with high quality and view them as potential ‘holy grails’. In fact, our love and trust for US brands is so deep-rooted that UK brands are often overlooked.

Perhaps US brands have better marketing strategies due to the fact that they target a larger population in comparison to UK brands. Furthermore, the multitude of US bloggers and vloggers showing off their desirable results with the most beloved US brands inspires naturals abroad to add these brands to their wish lists. I was guilty of this mindset, however, I did eventually branch out and I currently use UK based brands.

If a number of US brands terminate distribution within the EU due to their inability or unwillingness to comply with the EU regulations, not all is lost. EU regulations are put in place to ensure that products are legal and safe for our use. If companies are reluctant to comply with the EU regulations, then they do not deserve our patronage.

Like US brands, UK brands can offer us the same high quality products and services but perhaps at an even more competitive price. It’s also easier to forge a relationship with UK brands as they are local and our feedback is therefore much more considered. Further support of local brands can also ensure that these brands can expand and be available in their own shops or local beauty supply stores and pharmacies, allowing us to save money by cutting out the postage and packaging costs.

Lastly, supporting UK brands keeps money in our communities and allows job creation within our economy, which is really needed during this period of financial uncertainty. Charity starts at home!

Uhura: Star Trek and the Black Female Geek

It is no secret that I am a self certified nerd/ geek. I really need to get one of these T-shirts that every Tom, Dick and Non- Geek is wearing.

Not so long ago you would hide the fact that you were into Star Wars, Star Trek Doctor Who, BattleStar Gallactic (and the list goes on). Particularly if you were a black geek. This so was not cool. With the newest incarnations of these cult TV shows and films (excluding of course the update of 'Land of the Lost') being a bit of a geek (or at least the type of geek that I would have been back in the day) isnt something to hide from anymore. Thanks to the geeks who grew up and entered and conquered the entertainment industry my kids will grown up thinking that Star Wars is cool. Yataa!!

Overall: When I purchased this I was not expecting anything. I had seen a few reviews online and thought I would give it a try. This conditioner is perfect for parched dry locks. This product gets 5 out of 5 from me. I currently use it quite a bit for Co-Washes. I would definitely recommend and buy it again.

I really like the look feel and smell of this product, gave my hair a nice moisturised look after twist and on wash and go days. Also it wasn't expensive, only £3.49. I would give it 4 out 5. Only because I am not that keen on very thick butter but the product was great to use.

Really nice smooth consistency like a light lotion. Pleasant between the fingers and smoothed into hair easily.

Hair Feel:
Soft and moisturised

Hair Look:

A friend of mine dubbed this 'Afro Be Gone' because one morning I put it in my hair for a wash and go and instead of the 'fro I normally sport, my hair was 'limp'. Not in a bad way, more like it hung downwards rather than stuck up like it normally did. I know a lot of people do like to stretch their curls out so this is the product for you. However I like my curly texture and my 'fro so I wasn't quite expecting my 'Afro to be Gone'. It is a very light lotion type product and a great leave in so I would continue to use this. Really great curl defining product

Overall:

Difficult to describe the smell, it had one, just not a fragranced one like the moisture butter, more like an industrial smell, but not unpleasant. Overall I would give this 4 out of 5. I was impressed by both the Curl Defining Creme and the Moisture Butter, both products were worth trying and not too expensive at £3.49. If you are looking to stretch your hair out this gives great curl definition and a stretched out feel.

What If... I Shaved One Side of My Head

So I have gotten a bit bored of wearing scarves all the time and thought it would be fun to play around with my hair. This is what I love about having natural hair, I can play with it so much more and I have so much more versatility than just pulling my hair back in one!

Below are some pictures of me with half my hair gone. I havent actually shaved my head, I just pinned it back on one side and use some Ecostyler for hold.

The last few weeks I have been trialling the Beautiful Textures products ( review in just a bit). The products being used in my hair at the moment are:

I nicked the top from my Mummy ( I do this a lot) not sure where she got it from but I love the stripes. Jeans from Primark and Beige Patent shoes from New Look
Still working on improving my makeup selection but as you can see I am still just using a MAC foundation. I find concealer a bit heavy for every day wear.

What do you think Yay or Nay!
Not sure myself, seems a bit extreme to go the whole hog but I love how much I can play with this. I think I can say I am finally out of the TWA phase!

Bananas: More Food on your Hair and Skin

Last month when I visited my parents my sister came round and made banana fritters for my kids which they loved!. They now constantly ask for them, so this morning I made my first attempt at banana fritters to use up some bananas which had started to turn black.

Now usually those bananas would have gotten mashed up and put in my hair..."What? Again with the food in your hair?" I can hear you say, but bananas are another great Caribbean cosmetic ingredients for hair. A banana masque can help add moisture into your hair especially if you use a lot of heat on your hair.

Banana makes a great start to the day in breakfast cereal or in a smoothie, as they contain so many important nutrients.

What's in a Banana?

Bananas are rich in potassium, iron, natural oils, carbohydrates and vitamins (particularly B vitamins including B6 and B12 and vitamin C) which soften and encourage hair’s natural elasticity. This reduces split ends and breakage. Use regularly to soothe an itchy scalp, infuse hair strands with moisture and reduce tangling and 'frizz'.

Quite a few websites mentioned recipes for 'Banana Hair Masques' and 'Banana Hair MilkShakes', so I thought I'd share my recipe with you:

My Banana Hair PrePoo Recipe

2 x Over Ripe Bananas (black or spotty bananas)

1/4 cup Koko Coconut Dairy Alternative

1 sachet Coconut Cream

1 x tsp Honey

(optional) 1x Egg Yolk

On occasion I have added a bit of avocado oil or argan oil to provide slip

Leave this mixture on the hair for 30mins or more

I would then proceed to shampoo and condition my hair as normal

Any left overs can be frozen and used next time!

How to Avoid Getting Bits in your Hair

Dont just mash this with a fork, whizz it up, use a hand blender if you can to make it as smooth as possible. As mentioned before I only use over ripe bananas which are easier to mash.

So next time instead of throwing those over ripe bananas away think about putting them into a hair masque and dont forget to whizz them up properly.

Coffee, The Caribbean and Your Hair and Skin

Instead of using coffee to perk you up in the morning why not try coffee to perk up your skin and hair. The caffeine in coffee has numerous cosmetic benefits. Coffee can be used to soften and add shine to hair, treat cellulite and as an exfoliant for face and skin.

A popular blend of coffee found in the Caribbean is Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee which can be found in coffee houses around the world (My favourite place to find it is the coffee chain 'Jamaica' in Madrid).

According to the Wikipedia bods:

It is noted for its mild flavour and lack of bitterness. Over the last several decdes this particular coffee is one of the most expensive and sought after coffees in the world. Only coffee grown in a recognised growing region of the Blue Mountains is certified by the Coffee Industry of Jamaica as Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.

I was able to find that there are body and facial scrubs are made from this wonderfully exotic coffee:

However you can make your own homemade scrub with your favourite carrier oil and essential oil, sea salt or sugar and your coffee grounds at home.

The Coconut Mama had this wonderful recipe for a homemade antioxidant coffee scrub:

"1 Cup Ground Organic Coffee
1 Cup Organic Sugar or Salt
1/2 Cup Organic Coconut Oil
1/2 Tablespoon Cinnamon (optional)
1 Tablespoon Vanilla (optional)

Melt coconut oil and allow it to cool but not solidify. Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container or mason jar. The coffee and sugar will exfoliate your skin and the coconut oil will leave your skin soft and moisturised."

You can play around with the recipes, some variations could be:

Peppermint and Rosemary

Honey and Lemon

Cinnamon and Vanilla

Coffee on Hair

The caffeine in coffee increases blood circulation. Massaged directly into the scalp, it can stimulate hair follicles and speed up growth.

Method in the Madness:

Cool some brewed coffee , then while in the shower, spray the coffee onto roots. Allow it to sit for as long as possible. Rinse hair, and use products as usual. you should see less shedding and increased hair growth with regular use. This would be used as a post shampoo scalp treatment.

How to Use Fountain Mighty Roots

Pre-poo treatment: Prior to shampooing the hair, part dry hair and massage a liberal amount of oil to the scalp & entire hair shaft, using your fingers to gently detangle your stressed hair, from the tips to the root. Be careful not to pull and tug your hair, to avoid unnecessary breakage. Wrap hair with saran wrap or plastic cap (secure tightly) and sit under the hair for minimum 30 minutes. If hair is dry, damaged or if you are transitioning from chemically treated hair to natural, then leave on overnight. Shampoo and Condition hair as normal, rinse with warm water and pat hair dry, use hair low setting of hair dryer if desired and style hair.

Co-wash: (to cleanse your hair & scalp without using a traditional shampoo) Add a little of the oil to your regular moisturizing conditioner and apply mixture from root to tip, finger combing & detangling as you proceed. Rinse hair with warm water. Your freshly clean and moisturized hair is now ready for styling, without it having being stripped of its natural oils.

Deep conditioning treatment: Follow directions above for use after your normal shampoo routine, and rinse out once with your regular shampoo. If you desire thicker hair, then you do NOT need to remove the oil with shampoo, however if hair feels heavy or sticky then rinse lightly with warm water.

As a teenager I suffered quite badly with acne on my face, resulting in much name calling by others: my favourite 'crater face'. Anyway, in my twenties I discovered many natural ways of cleansing the face and my acne promptly went with the teen years.

One way of cleansing the face naturally is by using an oil to cleanse the face and the Castor Oil, Oil Cleansing method is a well know way of removing dirt and impurities from the face.

Mainstream facial cleansing products strip natural oils from the skin and contain fragrances which can be excessively drying. Our skin is then constantly repairing itself by trying to replenish those natural oils. Each time our natural oils are stripped away the skin overcompensates for the lack of moisture and overproduces oil.

To remove oil, dirt, dead cells and debris from the skin, we must remember from our early chemistry days that 'like attracts like' ie water likes or is attracted to water and oil likes or is attracted to oil. You will know that oil and water are immiscible ie they dont mix, for example water and suntan oil. This is a fundamental that has stayed with me throughout my education. As such for the purposes of this post we must be aware that 'oil dissolves oil' and the skin naturally lubricates itself with oil.

At first I thought it absurd to put oil on my acne prone, oily face. However oil on its own does not cause ance. A combination of factors including bacteria, dead skin cells and their build up and of course the over production of sebum (our natural oil) caused by stripping with mainstream facial washes can contribute to causing acne.

How do I cleanse my face with Jamaican Black Castor Oil

You will need a washcloth, 100% pure jamaican black castor oil and hot steamy water

Do this twice a week for 4 weeks before bed
Pour a genorous amount of the oil into the palm og your hand ( a bit more than a 10p sized amount)
Rub hands together and warm the oil
Massage into the face thoroughly, and smooth into your entire face, working on those problem areas. This should remove, makeup, dirt and any impurities.
Allow the oil to cool
Soak washcloth in the warm steamy water.
Wipe the oil away with the warm washcloth.
Wash the washcloth in the warm steamy water and hold o the face
Allow it to cool, then wipe the face again
Repeat this once or twice
Do not scrub the face. The washcloth should remove the oil and any dirt and impurities (even makeup) should come away with it.
If the face feels tight rub a small amount of castor oil on your fingers and massage into the face. This will be absorbed into the face.

Your face should feel clean and smooth when you wake in the morning! You will need to do this regularly perhaps twice a week

Let us know if this works for you!

I am currently trying a similarish method with Fountain's Jamaican Pimento Oil on my eczema prone arms and legs and will post and let you know if this works. I have had such wonderful results with witchhazel, tea trea oil and Fountain's Pimento Oil on all areas of my skin!

Okra (INCI: Abelmoschus esculentus) also called Quimgombo, bhindi, Gombo, Okro, bindi, bamia, Lady’s Fingers, Ochro, Okoro, bamiya, and bamieh is the fruit of a plant found primarily in the North and South American, but also in the Caribbean, Latin American and African countries is used as a vegetable. In the Caribbean islands, Okra is eaten in soup or with fish.

Okra is very nutritious. Not only as food but also for your hair and skin. In many South and Latin American countries, this has been used for strong, healthy and shiny hair. Some even claim that regular use of Okra on hair grows stronger and greatly stimulates hair growth. I used the Jamaican Fountain Castor Oil Hair Food on my eyebrows because my edges are very thin and I want them to be more fuller. So I have been using this product for about three weeks ever night before I go to bed on my brows. I have noticed a little thickening believe or not. I think castor oil works for me. I will continue to use the above product until I reach my desired thickness. I also love the way the product smells. I t has a peppermint scent and I love minty scents that are not overpowering. This is perfect. It has a slight tingling effect when placed on the skin. I might start trying it as a skin moisturizer since I have allergies, it may help with itching. So can't wait to try and see what happens.

This product feels wonderful on my scalp. With the mix of peppermint and grapeseed oil inside, it makes my scalp feel as if it can breath. Also, I love how the peppermint leaves are infused and the texture is a bit lighter for easier application. I will be back to buy a few more bottles because of the 3 I ordered my sister and mother have graciously left me with one. :) Thanks for carrying this! :)

My scalp is drinking Jamaican Black, like a thirsty person. My temples, lashes and eyebrows are also getting thicker. My hair (locked) is a little soft and is now looking as it did when I was very young. I do this nightly before retiring.
I'm glad I bought two (2) bottles at once.

I only started using this hair food less than 2 weeks ago, and already I can feel the curls of my new hair growth! I have used Jamaican black castor oil before as I was recommended to it as a fast hair growth aid. But I stopped using it after a few days because of the smell, especially during the summer last year, with the sweat & the castor oil my hair stank! I chose to try this product because it claimed it was pleasantly scented, and for real it is.

I like this hair oil because it smells like it's a leave in conditioner, and I find that my hair is well moisturized, without feeling greasy. It is a bit expensive though, but it is worth it.

I said I would give the Curls Unleashed range of products 3 weeks after last weeks product haul but not not sure if I will make it that far with the Curl Defining Creme. I am still using the Curls Unleashed Shampoo and Condition but this Curl Defining Creme and me caan gree!, so here is my review of the Curl Defining Creme.

First Week Review:

Consistency:

Now I wonder about this because other reviews have said it is like an opaque jelly or a mix between a pudding and a gel, but as I have found in the past buying from random BSS might mean that it has sat on the shelf for yonks and what I bought was more like butter!

(I used to buy a particular product from a random BSS and it was always orange in colour and very thick. Bought some last year from one of the stores I normally recommend online and it was pale yellow, light to the touch and smelt amazing. Why the random colour difference, was this expired, counterfeit, tampered with or just poorly stored? These places really need to do better!)

Anyhoo I digress.

I found this very thick and although took a little while to work into hair it did not leave flakes once worked in.

Hair Feel:

A friend of mine stopped me yesterday and commented on how crunchy my hair felt. My hair did feel quite dry after just a couple of hours. I found that I kept having to wipe my forehead which seemed greasy all the time. Attempted a twist out with it but the twists were not defined and they didn't stay long. This products did not hold the curls as I thought it would.

Hair Look: Shiny and healthy, this product was very oily due to the ingredients but made my hair shine.

Smell:

Far too chemically for me. It just didn't smell natural. My son even said to me yesterday "Mummy, why do you smell like the hair shop" I assume he meant the hair dresser as you sometimes get that relaxer smell permeating the room.

Other:

My concern about the consistency was further renewed when as the instructions stated i mixed with the green (ice -cream jelly) product that is the Moisturising Conditioner, This just resulted in a coagulated mix which left lots of bits in my hair which I couldn't then wash out. After going back into the shower three times to get this out of my hair, I found knots around the bits and wasn't happy. I think it may have something to do with the differences in consistency. Wont be doing that again!

All in all not a terrible product, but perhaps just not for me and my hair. From other reviews I found people with type 3 hair really seemed to get on with this but some with type 4 weren't too keen. Go figure...

Anyway whether or not this s a great representation of this product in the UK I do not know. All the American reviews describe a completely different product. Serves me right for walking into random Beauty Supply Store (BSS) and buying product of the shelves. Definitely sticking to my 'go to' online stores.

Moisturise frequently. Due to the curl pattern of afro hair oils do not always make it to the ends of the hair. Find a good light, water based moisturiser and seal that moisture in with an oil.
Avoid mineral oil- and petroleum-based hair products. These products clog the pores and impede hair growth. Use light oils such as jojoba which is excellent for dry hair.
Eat a well balanced diet exercise. Exercise, increases circulation and encourages blood flow to the hair follicles. A diet rich in protein, vitamins and iron, feeds the hair and encourages healthy hair growth.

Here is a short list of a few of our favourite Caribbean Inspired Natural Ingredients:

Avocado Butter (or oil):

Avocado Butter is pressed from the flesh of avocados. The high levels of vitamins A, B1, B2, D, and E are important for helping restore the health of the scalp and treating dry roots. Vitamin deficiencies can be related to scalp disease that result in hair loss. Avocado can thus replenish this much needed vitamins to the hair. The high fat content in avocado helps in protecting hair by stopping it dying out, strengthening brittle strands and reducing the incidence of breakage. Using on hair adds moisture and shine and leaves hair feeling soft and more elastic. As such in Avocado has regenerative and moisturising properties. Avocado is available in either oil or butter form.

Mango Butter:

Mango Butter is produced from Mango seed kernels. It is an excellent moisturising and lubricating butter, which can seal moisture into the hair and soften dry brittle strands, is excellent for sunburn and can repair heels on cracked feet. It has a high level of antioxidants which makes it useful in skin care but because of it’s high level of fats and emollient properties it is also useful in hair care. Although mango butter possesses many qualities similar to them, it has a higher level of fatty acids making it a more intensive moisturiser and is much softer in texture than shea and cocoa butter.

Coffee Scrub:

Coffee can be used to make Face and Body Scrubs. It can be used to soften and add shine to hair, treat cellulite and as an exfoliant for face and skin. Coffee contains caffeine which is known to stimulate hair follicles. Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is a popular blend found in coffee houses around the world.

Pimento Oil:

Pimento is indigenous to the West Indies and South America. Beneficial in the relief of aches & pains and can sooth, tone & moisturise skin naturally. It is also often used as a hair growth aid. Its has many varies uses as a Analgaesis, Antiseptic, Antioxidant, Anaesthetic, Carminative, Relaxant and a Stimulant.

Black Castor Oil:

This is a versatile oil often called an all purpose healing oil and made in several countries in the Caribbean. Its main component ricinoleic acid is a fatty acid that makes up 90% of this oil. It has anti bacterial and anti fungicidal properties creating a barrier to infection and making it an excellent treatment for scalp conditions. In addition, Castor Oil also contains omega-9 fatty acids which provide nourishment and act as a humectant drawing moisture in the skin and hair and keeping it there. It is also known to give the appearance of thicker hair and help achieve stronger & longer hair by reducing breakage. Many swear by a regular castor oil massage on the roots or sparse areas of hair to thicken hair and help to regenerate new hair growth.

Coconut Oil:

Extracted from the meat of the coconut, the oil is sought after for its unique chemical composition which account for its antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial properties, Coconut also oil carries with it antioxidant properties and the combination of medium-chain triglycerides (predominantly lauric acid) helps prevent the loss of proteins generally stripped from the hair during cleansing. Used regularly, coconut oil can treat and prevent many common scalp conditions such as dandruff and lice.

Product Review: Curls Unleashed Day 1

This is my most recent product haul so I thought I would start with the Curls Unleashed products. I plan to try them for three weeks and see how I feel about them at the end.

I tried the:

Curls Unleased Lavish in Lather Sulphate Free Shampoo
Curls Unleasehd No Restrictions Moisturising Conditioner
Curls Unleashed Take Command Curl Defining Cream

I started with the Curls Lavish in Lather™Sulfate-Free Shampoo

The Speil:

Lavish in the ultimate shampoo experience as your hair is gently cleansed, moisturized and detangles with lemon balm, rosemary and hops.

• Non-stripping

• Moisturising

• Great Lather

This product does not strip the hair of its natural oils and is gentle enough to use daily.

Initial Verdit:

The smell of this product was actually quite nice. It smelled a bit like Johnsons baby shampoo and was not unpleasant. This shampoo did get in my eye when I was washing it out and it burned a bit. I washed with water and all was fine. I then bizarrely got some in my mouth and had to brush my teeth to get the filmy feeling out of my mouth.

After the drama, my hair felt clean and soft to the touch. It did not feel stripped or dry. Liking this product but need to keep eyes and mouth shut when I use again. Slightly concerned by the chemically effect on my eyes and mouth. The instructions do say not to get in eyes!

I next tried the No Restrictions™Moisturizing Conditioner

The Speil:

Curls Unleashed™ No Restrictions™ Moisturizing Conditioner is great to use for added moisture. This product is also great for transitioning, “co-washing,” detangling and conditioning.

• Moisturises

• Detangles

• Can be used as a daily conditioner

• Prepares curls for styling

Initial Verdict:

Of all the products this was my favourite. I loved the fact that you could use it on as a co-wash or conditioner. There really are no restrictions. The consistency of the product can only be described as jelly and ice-cream and it has a green/turquoise colour. My hair did feel reasonably moisturised and I definitely intend to use this again. Two thumbs up!

Next I tried the Take Command™Curl Defining Crème

The Speil:

Curls Unleashed™ Take Command™ Curl Defining Crème helps shine, define and moisturize your curls without shrinkage. This product is great for twists, twist outs, coiling, freestyles and up-dos.

• Moisturises

• Defines Curls

• Anti-Shrinkage

• No Flaking

This product does not flake and stretches your curls. The Take Command Curl Defining Crème also does not contain petrolatum, mineral oil, SD alcohol, or parabens. Packaging is BPA free and recyclable.

Initial Verdict:

This was my least favourite of the three products. I wasn't too keen on the smell as it reminded me too much of that chemically relaxer smell. I am going to give this product a bit more of a chance and see if it grows on me. All in all is is a nice thick butter and gave great curl definition with no flakes! Great for sealing I will be investigating this further.

In three weeks time I will give the final verdict on Curls Unleashed and will be trialling the Beautiful Textures Range to see if they are as good as they say!

Swimming and Afro Hair Part III

Back to the pool again this Easter and I have updated my swim regine a bit since my last post, Swimming and Afro Hair Part II. Swimming is a great way to get exercise it burns of the calories, works all the muscles in your body and boosts metabolism. This type of exercise is also less stressful on your bones and muscles due to the weightless effect that you get when immersed in water.

My biggest problem when I decided to start taking care of my hair was chlorine. Chlorine is a disinfectant added to pools to break down dirt and oil so that we are not swimming in filth. As such chlorine will also remove the natural oils from your hair and scalp which are there to protect the hair making it dry and brittle. Chlorine affects the hair's outer protein layer, the cuticle, most by removing the sebum (natural hair oil) that nourishes and coats the hairs fiber. This can cause breakage and damage and the hair fiber and cuticle can crack and split. You should be particular careful if you have colour treated or chemically relaxed hair.

Protecting Afro Hair from Chlorine

Before you get in the water:

If you get the chance the night before , cat your hair in coconut oil. Coconut Oil is absorbed into the strand and stops the hair swelling with water once it is wet.
Wet the hair with fresh water again trying to prevent the chlorinated water getting into your hair.
Before swimming I coat my hair in Shea Butter, this is a new discovery for me. Shea Butter provides a protective barrier from chlorine and isn't as easily washed out as a conditioner which is what I was using before.
Jamaican Black Castor Oil is also a very thick oil that can coat the hair before going into the water and if you are short of shea butter this can also be used.
I keep a 30ml pot of Hug My Hair's Vintage in my Swim Bag to use on my hair. Contains both Shea Butter and JBCO.
A protective style like cornrows or twists stops water getting to your hair quite so easily.
If you have one wear a swim cap. It might not prevent the chlorinated water getting to your hair altogether but the exposure will be much less.

After Swimming:

Rinse the hair throughly when you leave the pool.
Use a shampoo with citric acid or phytic acid in the ingredients. I am not so keen on Swimmers Shampoos as they are incredibly drying but there are some natural swimmers shampoos (eg Aubrey Organics Swimmers Shampoo or California Baby's swim shampoo) that I might try in the future.
Apple Cider Vinegar Rinses are also good for removing chlorine deposits.
Condition with a Protein Reconstructor and/or a moisturising conditioner.

Are you planning on getting back into swimming this summer. It would be a shame not to just because of your hair.
