Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe…

via++

Blue is an old time favorite of mine, and I love the color blue as a designer, as it’s an “always in fashion” color. We may find the color blue to be trendier now then in the past yet blue, in all its glorious shades – from electric blue to navy, turquoise to azure – blue can and has always offered such a wide range of design possibilities, trendy more or less – it’s a timeless element.

Blue is such a fun, attractive color, an Omni-potential with infinite possibilities; it’s a perfect playground for any designer to explore its vast diversity. So, yes, blue is a very safe bet for your personal design, be it interior or in terms of a specific event wise. I incorporate it with great confidence in my creations.

via++

  via ++

Blue is an ideal color for any formal, conservative look and just as suitable to accomplish a fresh and fun look. The use of a monochromatic color scheme, where different shades, tints or tones of blue are combined can result with a wonderfully tranquil space. Adding an opposite color, such as sunshine yellow will create a summer groove.

Blue is a famously calming and peaceful color and depending on its temperature/ hue it can evoke many feelings and create so many different effects on a space.

Warm Blues, like denim, ocean blue or slate blue, contains hints of red. Color experts recommend these blues if you want to achieve a space with a cozier ambiance.

via++

via++

via++

Shades known as “cool” blues like cobalt, turquoise, and ice blue contain some yellow in them. These kinds of blues are “space enlargers”. Using cool blues can make any space feel more “open” with a crisp and clean vibe, a calming sense may be achieved by incorporating this family of blues.

Lately I’m in the mood for something blue. Blue for me is not a sad state of mind. Quite the contrary! Blue is the color of the sky and the sea. The color of serenity, of tranquility, of peace, love, and the sea… my absolute favorite place to be.

Blue is a period my favorite artist, Picasso, went through in which he only painted in shades of blue and blue green.

via++

I’m not sure what triggered this passion for the color blue – blue nail polish, blue vases, blue furniture, blue fabric, blue flowers, blue jeans!….

via++

In terms of the aesthetics, a book by Caroline Roehm “A Passion for Blue and White,” shown to me by a colleague as inspiration for a particular wedding design, was certainly a significant eye-opener. I suppose her work, and my growing passion for the many shades of blue I see at the sea when I’m out there surfing on my paddle board, or installing one of those lovely weddings by the sea, have together brought me to this point – the point where I love blue! And I love the way it taints something dull and transforms it in to something vibrant and sincere.

via++

For a recent event, a Saturday brunch by the sea, I got to play with my passion forblue and white and a touch of yellow. Every centerpiece featured a mix and match of white and yellow flowers, in a mix and match of blue and white vases and bowls.

The result a perfect combination: blue for sea and sky, white for sand, and yellow for the sun!

Wishing u all a lovely week filled with blue skys, yellow sunshine and smiles!

Why I love it – Pinterest and how to:

In a meeting today with a bride to be, she said “I have to take home work on weekends now because of this Pinterest thing you’ve got me doing! I love it! I can’t stop pinning!”

I smiled, satisfied I’ve got her busy dreaming up all kinds of crazy, cute and beautiful ideas for her wedding and happy I’ll have lots of information to work with when I get round to designing her wedding.

I always tell my clients that planning a wedding is a big project. And the design process is and should be a fun one!

With all the excitement and bride’s busy schedules, one might find all the endless choices to be a bit overwhelming. So many ends to tie, so many ideas, dreams, wishes. As in any process, if there is no system – there is chaos!

Old methods such as a wedding planning book, writing lists, saving pictures on your work computer, on your home computer and any other media you may have, pasting “post its” with all sorts of ideas to your mental or office wall, and bookmarking sites then desperately try to find “that thing” it was you saw and love but can’t remember where or when, and not being able to get to see it anywhere you are …. any place, any time… In the end many lose sight of what it is they like and want in the the overflow of information.

What you need (what we all need) is a good, user-friendly system – a one stop shop where you can pin and tack all your random thoughts and whims – is a useful, easy to manage tool like Pinterest and we, the professionals will take it up from there.

Become a dreamer!

A DREAM IS A WISH YOUR HEART MAKES (FROM CINDERELLA, Disney).

I truly believe in this after attending a lecture once in which the speaker explained how he has a “wishing wall” in his office where he sticks all kinds of photos of places he wishes to go, places he wishes to be, and more. I think if you name your dreams, set them as goals to achieve, with the right amount of effort there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to achieve them. At any rate, you can always enjoy the journey.

It seems to me as if Pinterest could quite possibly be one of the greatest organization tools one can find and a real social media phenomenon. With a huge amount of users (traffic statistics talk of numbers such as over 11M and growing rapidly), you can find an endless stream of ideas and inspirations. Information that you could easily keep and organize, by pinning them to your boards and sharing them with your friends or service providers. An ongoing wish list/ to do list.

via++

Pinterest allows you to “pin” any photo you see on the web and capture those beautiful ideas and inspirations, and pin on to your own visual pin board. Visiting your board, whether while taking a mental break at work, and revisiting on any other computer in some other place and time, you can simply click on the photo and it will open up the website where you saw the idea initially. Its fun, easy and it helps to store your ideas, with online reference, in an organized and convenient manner.

More about pintrest and how to use it

How to plan your wedding with Pinterest?

As I mentioned, Pinterest is a great tool to gain visual inspiration when planning your wedding. It is also a useful tool to organize your wedding ideas into categories so that you don’t have to sort through all those pins of yours in order to find the picture of a bridal dress you love, a flower composition, a color pallette, a wedding favor – all these and many more.

There are two ways that you can use Pinterest while planning your wedding. The first is to find inspiration for your wedding theme and decor. As Pinterest focuses on visuals, and has a friendly interface, you will be able to quickly browse a large selection of photos and ‘repin’ the ones you like to your own boards. This helps you “get into it” and begin to discover what it is you really like.

I encourage brides to start doing this right from the beginning especially if they feel so overwhelmed by all those ideas out there. Once you start pinning, a pattern tends to emerge.

via ++

via++

What’s left for you to do is to focus on the inspirations to help discover your chosen color scheme, theme, and style etc… And I, as a designer will know how to focus on the particular details that begin to form a certain pattern and distinct taste. That’s where the second best way to use Pinterest comes in: to engage the service providers in your wedding with your moodboard. By keeping track of inspirations, ideas, and fantasies, you allow others to get a glance into the vision of your dream wedding. By this you allow them to take part in a dynamic involved creative process. One that may evolve and then eventually will lead you to the well defined idea of how your wedding is going to look like.

Here are the 6 quick steps to get started with Pinterest:

Sign up for Pinterest. Receive e- mail confirmation.

Once confirmed, install the “pin it” button (instructions will come within confirmation mail)

Browse and Find photos you like and if you particularly like certain users, you can follow them. Browse the pin board collections of the users you have followed.

While doing so, you can go on, and repin things you like & create your own pin boards. This way you can keep track of everything that appeals to you in an organized manner. For example, create one pin board for center pieces, invitations, shoes, wedding dresses etc.

Get feedbacks from those you like to hear their comment. And show this to your hairstylist, wedding planner, designer, makeup artist and even our groom if you wish too!

Have fun. Its all about sharing lovely ideas and inspiration. Pinterest is a fun, social media through which you can communicate with others.

One of the perks of this business, is that you get to decorate parties! I know that sounds obvious, but actually “letting your hair down” and having fun is not that obvious.
I recently got the opportunity to do just that.

Below are some images from a Bar Mitzvah party that I decorated.
The design theme was “Pop Art” with a little twist on the commercial icon ‘McDonalds’.

A logo featuring the boy’s name with a twist was created by my team and used in the childrens’ area. We labelled all the junk food they ate (burgers and fries) with the stickers, we hung signs above their food stations featuring the same logo and of course, for each child’s individual place setting – an individual hamburger gummy sweet, with the logo sticker pasted on.

The children’s table featured a wonderfully colorful striped runner decorated with a myriad of sweets and bright colored gerbera flowers.

The casual ambience played a central role in the rest of the decor. Two open kitchens were erected out of staging units. In order to add color and cohesion to the design, we ‘skirted’ the kitchens in navy and white fabric and installed pot racks which we decorated with garlic, chilli and greens.

The adult centerpieces featured bright colored combinations of tulips, roses and cyclamens in clear glass vases arranged on jeans fabric runners, and bright colored gerberas seemingly growing out of wheat grass, as well as gerberas wrapped in colorful wool.

Fun, bright colors, youthful design = fun event.

The beautiful venue with its green lawn, amphitheater form, the full view of the marvelous lagoon, small Mediterranean Port, and ruins of Caesarea was the inspiration for this event. The focus was on enhancing the existing; a pretty wedding, decorated with elegant flower arrangements and glistening candles in lanterns, in a palette of eggplant purple and silver on a white base to match the bridal party outfits – grooms’ men in gray and silver; with bridesmaids in dark and eggplant purple.

The reception centerpieces in purple and white were perfectly matched with the wedding aisle decor which featured tall silver lanterns and purple, white and cream rose petals and led the happy couple to an elegant tall, white Chuppah, decorated with white and purple flowers.

The venue’s close proximity to the sea, meant we just had to have some shells incorporated in the design (well, we wanted to that is!). Thus, from the entrance table which featured shells as escort cards, to the napkins tied with shells on a silver tassel, to starfish we placed on the tables to compliment the centerpieces.

Shira and Assaf’s wedding was fun to create and fun to attend. The magic of the Galilee put a spell on all of us; I guess fresh air, and a nice view of green fields can give you a good high.

After you had a taste of the design, we wanted to share with you the fun DIY Photo Booth we created together with the bride and a few bits and pieces from the hotel. It was made to complete the joyous occasion and provide the groom and bride with a unique collection of memories and a many future “good laughs” in the future.

A vintage sofa, accompanied with a small wooden table was set in the corner of the reception area. A touch of styling, created by a collection of props we used such as a birdcage, a wooden box, A Venitian mask, lamp and books. An additional touch was made by hanging a “Photo- booth” sign, and a white mosquito net -for as a backdrop. All that was completed with “interactive props” – a collection of items you can wear or use – in order to obtain fun and funny pictures. And not to forget (!) the disposal cameras for the guest – free of use.

Props that take will bring your DIY Photo Booth to the “next level”:

A Chalk board, some feather boas, hats, sunglasses, a sombrero, a rubber ducks, water pistols, fake mustaches, a viking helmet, a Hawaiian flower garland, some mustaches…etc…

Last winter I got a call from a bride who lives up in the North of Israel. She said she was planning on getting married in the backyard of a boutique hotel and was looking for a “partner” to help her create and define a stylized collection of simple yet elegant elements for her wedding day decor.

In terms of a Chuppah, she wanted something “traditional and simple”.

For flowers, she preferred the “hand-picked” wild style over more “sophisticated floral arrangements”. In terms of other design elements, she wanted “the personal touch” – a collection of things that express the personalities of her and her future husband to be. She was willing to help in any way; and get her friends in on it to!

Struck by an overwhelming sense of sentiment and hope, I called upon my very talented colleague Efrat Kuller Melamed and together we decided to have some fun! We joined up forces with the bride, and ‘dreamt’ up a perfect “backyard” garden wedding with a spoonful of vintage and a pinch of DIY we created a Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious wedding! all photoes were taken by Shira’s talanted Sister – Noa green.

Guests were greeted in the entrance by an elegant arrangement of flowers, vintage props and candy apples that served as place cards.

Guests were invited to sign a “guestbook” in the form of old postcards from different places around the world and view a collection of sentimental photos of the bride and groom from their separate childhoods until their shared lives today. The photos we hung between the grapevine.

Perhaps the funnest part of the wedding decor was this “DIY’” photobooth we put together for the guests to enjoy. We set up some old bits and pieces of furniture collected from around the hotel’s rooms, along with some props and odds and ends collected by bride and friends. A bowl of Instamatic cameras was placed with the intention that guests would take self portraits and feel free to pose and have some fun. This was truly a hit!

Its all in the details…

More and more I find that its the small details that bring ‘soul’ and a personal touch to each and every wedding design. Whether its a specific style, a distinct color palette, a favorite flower or unique location, its the details that make the design complete.

What better way than to start from the beginning? In my designs, I always try to incorporate something that expresses the couple or the design theme with some kind of creative twist on the typical seating card.

In this post, I’ve collected just a few of the place card table displays and creative escort cards I’ve incorporated in my designs – sometimes something tasty and refreshing such as a cupcake, a bag of meringues, a bottle of olive oil or a token capiz shell – which double as little gifts for the guests. Other times, the place cards will be more in line with the design theme and based on the display rather than the actual escort card replacement.

Spring 2011 has begun with a very exciting boom!

An Indian wedding in a Forrest halfway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, a Black & White super chic wedding in an old Arab house-turned venue in the old city of Jaffa, and a lovely Spanish Tapas Affair in a private home in Haifa – to name just a few.

So keep yourself updated, there are great updates coming up, right here in my blog.

Today I want to share with you this sweet and colorful Spanish Tapas Bat Mitzvah affair.

A bright color palette of purple, red, orange, fuchsia, gold and black – combining flowers with floral patterned tablecloth tops, hand fans, vases covered in lace stockings were arranged upon the furniture within the house and garden.

The food was displayed and served from decorated food buffets adorned with chains of chili peppers, garlic, bright colored hats and hand fans.

The result – fun, elegant, Spanish style lunch!

As the 2011 spring-summer season begins, I feel I need to sum up 2010 – which ended with a gem of a wedding @ the Mamila hotel in Jerusalem! (A couple of months back I wrote a post about the very cool place cards/ wedding giveaways we created for this wedding – the olive oil bottles ) – with a few words about the ‘behind the scenes’ fun we have while preparing an event.

The design process of every wedding is very exciting to me from the beginning when I first meet the couple and get an idea of what it is they are dreaming of, and then begin to think about how it is I am going to bring it all together.

The search for the right ingredients culminates, as the best part when it all falls into place – on the day. That’s when my super duper staff pulls up their sleeves, to create my vision, the client’s dream, with their very talented hands and a smile on their face.

This super sweet couple, that traveled to Israel from Texas and Japan, the beautiful venue with its stunning ethnic eclectic design and the best of ‘Eretz Israel’ views, a flea market collection of rust iron pots, pans, scales and containers, olive trees and sprigs of dried lavender where combined with winter flowers such as purple tulips, Hyacinthus and succulents to create the desired elegant yet authentic ambiance.

Following my previous post in which I gave you a taste of the fusion of artistic elements with wedding traditions, it’s time to “talk” about how the desire for ‘something truly different’; something artistic, rustic, – not your traditional “white wedding” theme was incorporated within the design.

The un-ordinary, rustic forest setting – a kibbutz in the Judean hills, created the inspiration and set the tone for the design.

The style was casually elegant and contemporary; an enchanted garden setting in an intimate atmosphere for the Chuppah and a well designed ‘organic chic’ dinner and party to follow. Fresh cut natural flower arrangements, in a mix and match of ceramic vases featuring refreshing, contrasting shades of eggplant and apple green, on a neutral palette of natural colors: champagne, amber, mocha and chocolate brown; highlighted with touches of cream.

In the reception area, a mix of lanterns rented from the flea market in Tel Aviv (my favorite treasure island) hung from the venue’s trees.

The bridal chair was allocated between two trees from which we hung long strings of cream and white ribbons and glass balls with tea lights creating a unique setting for a very special bride.

The Chuppah featured a Masorti Chuppah (Masorti, means traditional) made from 4 branches and a beautiful parochet which Andi (the brides’ artist mother) had hand sewn especially for Ariel and Noam – the first of a newborn tradition – a family parochet that will “Marry” Ariel’s siblings and children for generations to come. Amen!

In place of a traditional wedding aisle, white buckets featuring white, cream and apple green flower arrangements were hung on the chairs that lined the aisle.

The dinner area was divided and merged between the younger guests’ section and the family and older friends sections.

For the younger guests, the event colors – eggplant, greens, pinks, and burnt orange – were combined with chic garden party style lounge furniture in place of conventional tables and chairs. Elegant white Japanese lanterns hung between the trees. Centerpieces featuring flowers growing in and out of antique copper pots and trays set beside lots of glistening candles together created the desired festive, spiritual ambiance.

The adult tables were divided between very long tables featuring rusted containers with an elegant arrangement of flowers imported from Holland especially for the event (hydrangeas are barely available in Israel during spring – this event took place in the fall).

To keep the table layout diversified and visually aesthetic, some of the guests were seated around ‘ring’ shaped tables that had a cherry blossom tree planted inside from which we hung clear glass balls with tea lights inside.

A lovely “day after” letter from Andi, mother of the bride, addressed to myself and Debra Goldberg who produced the event, will perhaps enlighten you as to why I do what I do and how lucky I am to get the chance to do it!

“I just had to tell you what a magical, glorious evening you created for our family.

Every detail was stunning, flowers, color scheme of flowers, (rich and unusual,) lanterns fabulous ( I want to buy some of those!) young people’s area – too, too fun ( everyone wanted to sit there…) Bridal area, sweet, romantic- the whole seating plan- outrageously fun and creative. I loved Ariel’s bouquet and the crystal napkin ties. Seating tablecard table was great!

I have gotten so many e-mails today about how incredible the evening was and how no one wanted to go home.
So thank you, a million thanks. I think we make a great team. I am so happy I discovered you both for child number one! God willing we have many more smachot to plan.

Lots of love and thanks-Andi and David and Ariel and Noam”
