The campervan was well made, impeccably kept, handled like a dream; and completely opened up the island to us. <br /> <br /> We loved every moment – from drinking coffee while watching wild horses graze, to playing on miles of perfect beach, and including every road stop in between. I am writing this purely from my experience as a passenger and holiday-maker. </p> <p>Years ago, when the kids were little, we hired a budget campervan - and I swore I would never do it again. That thing rattled and it was so uncomfortable when driving, it was really better described as a milk truck.</p> <p>However, with a wedding in beautiful Pauanui (Coromandel) as our destination, and budget not such an issue, we thought we’d try again – this time in a bit more comfort. </p> <p>And we weren’t disappointed. Every part of our journey was a pleasure – from being greeted by the friendly, knowledgeable Wilderness staff, to easy on-road handling, a restful night's sleep and everything in between - what a stand-out experience! </p> <p>In this blog I thought I’d break down the things that impressed me most. (I know I was looking for this type of information when I was researching my options. I hope this helps you with your research too).</p> <h3>The Wonderful Wilderness Team</h3> <p>I’ve never met a bunch of happier, friendly staff! Kerstin greeted us warmly then proceeded to show us around the motorhome. No stone was left unturned as she carefully described the driving instructions, then walked us around the van for the pre-trip vehicle inspection. The inspection and preparation for departure took about an hour (tip: allow time for this) but it was worth it. We left the yard carefully, feeling confident about the journey ahead.</p> <p>On our return, Fernando strode excitedly out to the motorhome, and welcomed us back. He was genuinely interested in our trip and even offered to help unpack the van for us. No cleaning was required (we could even leave our rubbish aboard) – all we had to do was take our things and walk back to our car. Easy.</p> <p> <img title="The Wilderness Team is always there to help you on your NZ motorhome holiday" alt="Man shaking hands with a Wilderness team member when picking up their campervan" data-displaymode="Original" src="http://wilderness.co.nz/sf-images/default-source/blog/the-wilderness-team-is-always-there-to-help-you-on-your-nz-motorhome-holiday.jpg?sfvrsn=0" /></p> <h3>Driving the Vehicle</h3> <p>Not being a driving expert, I only have my last ‘milk truck’ experience to compare – and the two experiences couldn’t be further apart. Sitting in the passenger seat was a delight. Perched high above the road, the view was amazing. Both the driver and passenger seats were leather, contoured and adjustable, which for me was such a bonus (I suffer from back issues, so being able sit comfortably for long durations is usually an issue – but not this time!) </p> <p>Our vehicle had the option of automatic or manual transmission (we chose automatic) and handled the winding, hilly roads of the Coromandel beautifully. We did pull to the left in passing lanes to let cars pass, but there was plenty of power in the engine to keep to the speed limit on open roads.</p> <p>Big rear-vision mirrors and a parking camera (yes, a parking camera!) made parking and maneuvering the vehicle easy.</p> <h3>Getting to Know the Camping Side of the Vehicle</h3> <p>The fun part - getting to know the camping side of the vehicle and figuring out how to use everything.</p> <p>Firstly, what an impressive set up. A full size, modern fridge with separate freezer. A griller. An electric cook-top stove. A really decent sized bathroom – complete with separate shower and toilet (with a genius door configuration). Heaps of storage. And the ceiling of the cab dropped down to reveal a second double bed that you would never know was there. The kids were able to climb up, sleep and still move around under the bed in the evening.</p> <p>I likened the interior of the vehicle to a cross between a Boeing airplane and boat. Everything closed with a good ‘clunk’ (like an overhead locker on a plane) and there were nooks and crannies cleverly tucked away for storage (in my daughters words: “It’s a road-boat mum!”)</p> <p>But the best part? The instruction manual. This may sound crazy, however I am not usually an instruction-manual-kind-of-a-girl. Yet amenities as impressive as this did require a bit of educating to figure out. And that manual was probably the best instruction manual ever written. Plain english, well written, with illustrations – it was actually an enjoyable read.</p> <h3>‘Living’ in the Vehicle</h3> <p>Switching between daytime and nighttime configurations was a breeze – literally just the push of a button and we had a second double bed. The beds came pre-made with good linen, great pillows and very comfortable mattresses. </p> <p>The front seats swivelled to enable a spacious dining configuration of two chairs (the front seats) and two bench seats (the back seat and one side seat). Great for meals, a game of cards and for relaxing while watching the world go by out the window.</p> <p>Everything we needed to be comfortable was included in the motorhome. Soft fluffy towels, a tea towel (very important), extra blankets and linen. Even handy cloths to wipe down the kitchen and bathroom surfaces was provided.</p> <p>We literally just needed to bring consumables - food (and very importantly) dishwashing liquid.</p> <p>And, to the kids delight, the motorhome came equipped with <a href="http://wilderness.co.nz/vehicles/extras-accessories" target="_blank">onboard WiFi</a>, plenty of device charging outlets and a good stereo system. There was also a pull out TV, which we didn’t use, but I’m sure others would put this to good use.</p> <h3>Freedom Camping vs Booking into a Site</h3> <p>We were fortunate to experience both styles of camping on our trip. Freedom camping in NZ has really come such a long way since our last experience. With dedicated parks for registered self contained vehicles (which all Wilderness motorhomes are), you are lucky to stay in some of the most coveted locations in the world.</p> <p>Our first night freedom camping was fantastic. Although hubby was reluctant for us to use ‘the facilities’, with three females on board he was quickly outnumbered. The toilet was easy to use, didn’t smell and had the advantage of being able to stay dry due to a clever dividing door off the shower. Later when we returned the campervan, the process of emptying waste was also much easier than we expected. Very clean and simple. </p> <p>Water heating and lights all ran off gas for freedom camping (which, thanks to the handy instruction manual, we were able to figure out).</p> <p><em>The best part about freedom camping was the view. Sure, where we chose to park just happened to be at a popular early-morning spot for surfers …but that was part of it. Hearing the cars arrive, the quiet banter of the surfers getting ready, then silence as the surfers jogged down the beach and hit the waves was really cool. And, with a view right out our bedroom window, we could watch the surfers carving up the waves as the sun rose behind them.</em></p> <p>The next night we parked on a powered site at the venue for the wedding which brought us out. Again, it was an easy set up. And with mains power on our side, we were able to make toast, and even use our hair dryer and straighteners to get ready for the wedding. (You can’t do <strong>that</strong> on a boat!).</p> <h3>Would I do it again? Yes!</h3> <p>What a difference a quality vehicle makes to the New Zealand motorhoming experience. I have no hesitation doing this again with Wilderness – in fact, the experience was so good, I’d even consider ditching my 9-5 life at some point in the future so I can take to the road in a (quality) motorhome for good. Actually only the North Island and with that we only scraped the surface! This was our first motorhoming experience – and one that has left us with a thirst for more in the future. Admittedly I had my doubts about spending nine days in a ‘tiny house’ plus we have never camped before as a family (hotels are more our style). But, we managed, survived even thrived in the near proximity we shared plus it gave us a chance to reconnect to the simple things in life without modern world distractions. Our New Zealand Wilderness Motorhome holiday ticked all the boxes and has us yearning to see more of NZ again one day.<br /> <br /> <img src="http://wilderness.co.nz/sf-images/default-source/default-album/family-motorhome-adventure.jpg?sfvrsn=0&MaxWidth=600&MaxHeight=&ScaleUp=false&Quality=High&Method=ResizeFitToAreaArguments&Signature=FCAA306F9EC62071D756363F2401D597" data-method="ResizeFitToAreaArguments" data-customsizemethodproperties="{'MaxWidth':'600','MaxHeight':'','ScaleUp':false,'Quality':'High'}" data-displaymode="Custom" alt="Family Motorhome Adventure with Wilderness Motorhomes" title="The James Family on their New Zealand Motorhome Adventure" /></p> <p>Before I send you on a video journey of our trip (with thanks to my awesome husband) I thought I would pencil in my top ten tips if you feel driven to experience this magic part of the world with your family one day.</p> <h3>1. Do your research for a motorhome that suits your family’s needs</h3> <p>We hired the <a href="http://wilderness.co.nz/vehicles/peak-4" data-slimstat="1">Peak 4</a> from Wilderness Motorhomes because it had two separate beds at the back for the girls with plenty of curtains to pull across at night. This gave us the ability to lay in our own bed while we watched a movie or read until it was time for us to go to sleep without disturbing the girls. Also look for one with a large water tank capacity.  Showering, washing dishes etc uses up water especially when there are four people so this enabled us to go a couple of days without having to fill up while freedom camping. Oh, and having the underfloor heating was a small luxury on chilly mornings. At 7.4 metres long it was the biggest one I could find!</p> <h3>2. Pre-order groceries</h3> <p>We all know how time-consuming it is to do the groceries, particularly in foreign supermarkets. Jump online and pre-buy your groceries at Countdown, with in-store pick up at your chosen time, near to where you are heading on your first day. We organised to grab our groceries straight after jumping in the motorhome at Mt Roskill on the way to collecting our bikes. Instantly you have a full fridge without wasting precious driving time to your first nights destination.</p> <h3>3. Keep your itinerary flexible</h3> <p>I am a planner, a massive planner so we had the sights we wanted to see mapped out but in no order. Do your research on TripAdvisor and read recommendations.  The weather changes a lot in New Zealand and we encountered flooding, road blockages, landslips and road closures. Always have a plan B.</p> <h3>4. Go out of peak season</h3> <p>NZ holiday periods differ slightly to ours (except Christmas) so take advantage of the quieter roads, less crowds and more space at freedom camping spots.  It just makes the experience that little bit more special. Plus it is a lot cheaper!</p> <h3>5. Download some helpful <a href="http://wilderness.co.nz/blog/top-ten-travel-apps-to-optimise-your-nz-motorhome-vacation" data-slimstat="1">NZ motorhome apps</a></h3> <p>I found both Rankers NZ and Wilderness Motorhomes indispensable for locating the nearest dump stations, supermarkets, freedom camping spots and reading comments from other travellers.</p> <h3>6. Stock up on some colouring in books, board games and puzzles for the kids</h3> <p>Have these up your sleeve for longer driving days to keep a lid on the kids.</p> <h3>7. Hire bikes if you can</h3> <p>It was great to stretch our legs and explore locations without having to uproot the motorhome all the time. </p> <h3>8. Take minimal luggage and use soft suitcases</h3> <p>Space is tight so keep it light! There are laundromats in caravan parks to ease the dirty clothes pile but at the same time be prepared for four seasons in one day.</p> <h3>9. Don’t bite off more than you can chew</h3> <p>We drove around 1200 kilometres in nine days which isn’t that much. Some days were three hour drives and some were only 30 minutes. Roads are different with many being windy and slow.  Plan to enjoy your holiday without massive road time.</p> <h3>10. Embrace freedom camping</h3> <p>Out of the nine nights we spent only three in caravan parks.  To me, this is the essence that makes up a motorhoming holiday in New Zealand with the most spectacular spots being beside lakes, oceans and mountain sides. Most freedom camping spots are restricted to self-contained vehicles and have million dollar views to wake up to.</p> <p>So I know you are bursting to see our intimate little vid, I hope you enjoy plus it gives a great insight to the places we visited. "SE1," a freedom camp location recommended by the <a href="http://wilderness.co.nz/vehicles/extras-accessories/camping-guide">WilderNessts guide</a> was just outside of Christchurch, on an isolated pebblestone beach. When we arrived, we were the ONLY one's there. As I began cooking dinner in our surprisingly comfortable and equipped kitchen, my husband Kaleb was outside star gazing. Kaleb poked his head inside our side door and said "you have to come out here." I stepped outside to see the most clear and brilliant sky, with the Milky Way clear as day just out our motorhome's side door. My eyes welled up with tears in utter amazement. I'd never seen that many stars in my life, and here they were shouting with brightness, for us alone and our little motorhome. Naturally, you’ll want to share and discover as much as possible during your trip. Without WiFi both of these tasks can become quite a chore, but now getting away from it all doesn’t mean you have to completely be off the grid. When you’re travelling in your motorhome away from home, staying connected allows you to comfortably research your next destination, keep up-to-date with the news back home and conveniently use other helpful <a href="http://wilderness.co.nz/blog/top-ten-travel-apps-to-optimise-your-nz-motorhome-vacation">travel apps to maximise your motorhome holiday</a>.</p> <p>That’s why we’ve introduced the option to <a href="http://wilderness.co.nz/vehicles/extras-accessories">add on unlimited WiFi</a> in all our motorhomes.</p> <p>The onboard router operates on a long-range Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) network, meaning you can connect to the Internet whenever you’re within range of a tower. With currently 480 towers nationwide, it seems to be pretty hard to drop out of coverage! The RBI also offers one of the best coverages compared to the other providers in New Zealand.</p> <p>You can use any device that has inbuilt WiFi capacity and is within about 20 metres of the router. The router provides 4G or 3G broadband speeds which makes streaming music and videos, or just surfing the net, a non-issue. All of these onboard features, as well as the network, make this onboard WiFi a first-rate option for touring New Zealand.</p> <p>Pretty impressive right? We thought so too and had our Reservations Leader, Claudia Opper, put it to the test.</p> <p>‘From setting up our devices to the onboard router, to having Internet coverage even in the most rural and small town communities, it impressed us more than other WiFi solutions we’ve had in the past.’</p> <p>‘We were driving through Tongariro National Park and dropped out of cellphone coverage, but we still had Internet coverage, so we could still listen to our road trip playlist on Spotify and use the GPS on our phone, without having to worry about taking the wrong turn.’</p> <p>Claudia also remarked that the onboard WiFi added that extra luxury to motorhoming around NZ, conveniently allowing them to discover local quirks on their spontaneous stops. It also let them stay up to date with the current weather and road conditions, helping them to <a href="http://wilderness.co.nz/blog/driving-in-new-zealand-tips-for-a-safe-and-enjoyable-trip">drive safe on New Zealand roads</a>.</p> <p>When asked about the speed, she commented, funnily enough, that she didn’t even notice. Just goes to show, that Internet speed is at its best when you don’t have to think about it!</p> <p>Let’s face it, WiFi has become a part of our everyday lives. What you need to know for a safe and enjoyable experience.Thu, 09 Mar 2017 09:05:43 Z<p>It’s summer time here in New Zealand, which brings good amounts of sunscreen, <a href="http://wilderness.co.nz/blog/the-art-of-the-great-kiwi-barbie" target="_blank">BBQs</a> and Tip Top ice-creams – yum! </p> <p>It also means we have higher traffic volumes on our roads. </p> <p>So while being sun smart is important, we wanted to take the opportunity to give you our best tips for driving in New Zealand.</p> <p>New Zealand roads are like no other. We have a highway system in some of our large metropolitan areas, while the rest of our roads offer a variety of driving conditions, often with onward facing traffic. It’s not unusual to find yourself meandering down an unpaved gravel road in search of untouched beauty, with livestock sharing your lane.</p> <p><img title="Driving safe on New Zealand gravel roads" alt="Wilderness motorhome drives down curvy road in New Zealand" data-displaymode="Original" src="http://wilderness.co.nz/sf-images/default-source/blog/driving-safe-on-new-zealand-gravel-roads.jpg?sfvrsn=0" /></p> <h3>NZ Specific Safety</h3> <p>The key difference many of you will first need to master is that we drive on the left, just like the UK and Australia. All of our campervans have stickers on the rear-view mirror to remind you to keep left and many of our roads have arrows directing you. That said, it pays to keep alert, particularly when on quiet rural roads, or when you’re pulling out of driveways or side roads where the habitual tendency can be to coast onto the side of the road you’re used to travelling on.</p> <p>Which brings us to our next point – if you’re tired, pull over in a side bay and rest or change drivers. Driving on our roads requires a level of alertness that even locals can find challenging. We have a lot of designated ‘rest stops’ dotted along our roads for you to park up, enjoy a snack and stretch your legs. Taking a break for 30 minutes can make all the difference for the rest of your drive. And besides, you want to be fresh and attentive to enjoy the amazing scenery along the way too.</p> <p><img title="Experience the great New Zealand scenery by motorhome" alt="Wilderness motorhome on New Zealand country road" data-displaymode="Original" src="http://wilderness.co.nz/sf-images/default-source/default-album/experience-the-great-new-zealand-scenery-by-motorhome.jpg?sfvrsn=0" /></p> <h3>Safely Enjoying the Scenery</h3> <p>And so to our next point – our spectacular scenery. It’s a large part of the campervan appeal right? It gives you greater access to everything we love about New Zealand. Because many of our roads pass through towering mountains, lush native bush, and breathtaking coastlines, the roads are narrow. Our speed limit on the open road is 100km per hour, but on narrow windy roads you’re advised to take your foot off the accelerator and drive to the conditions, particularly if it’s been raining or there’s fog where your visibility is limited.</p> <h3>Courteous Driving</h3> <p>For those times when you do need to take it easy, we encourage to you to hug to the left side of the road. This should be observed anytime you’re driving slower than the general traffic flow. This gives cars behind you better sight of oncoming traffic and opportunities to pass you. (NZ road rule note: cars can legally pass over the median strip when it’s a dotted white line. If the painted strip in the middle of the road is a double yellow line it is illegal to pass.) Practice courteous driving and pull over to the slow vehicle bays, and stay left without speeding up in the passing lanes to allow traffic to pass you without having to drive dangerously.</p> <h3>Driving to the Conditions</h3> <p>Which brings us to our final point – the weather. We mention above about driving to the conditions. This is something that can’t be emphasised enough. Even right now in summertime the weather can be unpredictable and change at a moment’s notice. Roads can become slippery and vision can be impaired. Always reduce your speed when the conditions place extra demands on your driving, and if it becomes too demanding for your skill level, make use of one of the rest stops until you feel confident to resume your trip. Give yourself plenty of time to reach each destination, and remember, you’re not missing out as long as you’re safe. Our traffic police are vigilant when it comes to these two road rules – rightly so – and along with speeding, you’ll often find yourself facing a hefty fine if caught. </p> <p>That about covers it. Well, look no further. </p> <p>We’ve compiled our most helpful hints and insider tips for getting on the road with least fuss and stress. Whether you’re a complete novice, or a campervan expert, you can use these tips to get the most out of your motorhome holiday by saving time along the way. </p> <h3>1. Store your items in a logical order</h3> <p>Packing up is a breeze when you don’t have to pack everything up. Keep bigger equipment like your camping table and chairs and BBQ gear in the garage of your motorhome (and make sure it’s locked), so they’re easy to access and pack away when you’re getting ready to travel to your next destination. This will also get you into a routine and before you know it, all the ‘road-ready’ activities will be habits you can execute with ease.</p> <p>We know how useful this is, so we have a ‘start checks’ sticker on the windscreen of your Wilderness motorhome, including everything you need to do like putting the power cable away, turning the gas bottle off, and checking the vents are down and all furniture is secured. As you pull out of your campsite, make sure you do one last scan around your area to make sure you’ve collected all rubbish and you’re leaving nothing behind. </p> <h3>3. Planning is key</h3> <p>A free-spirited and spontaneous trip may sound like fun, but planning your motorhome holiday, even a little bit, is essential to a problem free campervan experience. Hitting the road with purpose and a clear destination in mind will save you a lot of time on decision-making and last minute detours. During summer it can be difficult to find space at popular campsites so pre-booking sites will ensure you have a place to legally stay overnight. A few local favourites are trail mix in a Ziploc bag (almonds, cashews, peanuts, raisins, dried fruit and dark chocolate), freshly picked Gala Apples or berries – available along many main roads in summer, and vegetable chips (kumara aka sweet potato, carrot, parsnips and beetroot). </p> <p>You can also minimise time spent in supermarkets by planning a few meals in advance.
