A Winter Walk to Golitha Falls: A Day Trip from Trevorrick Farm Cottages

Nestled in the idyllic Cornish countryside, Trevorrick Farm Cottages offer a perfect base to explore some of Cornwall’s most enchanting destinations. In January, we embarked on a delightful trip to Golitha Falls, a magical woodland trail featuring cascading waterfalls along the River Fowey. If you’re planning your own escape to Cornwall, here’s what to expect on this serene winter outing.

The Journey from Trevorrick Farm Cottages to Golitha Falls

Golitha Falls is approximately 45 minutes by car from Trevorrick Farm Cottages, covering a distance of around 25 miles. The drive itself is a scenic one, taking you through picturesque villages and rolling countryside. Even in winter, the journey has its own charm, with misty fields and bare trees creating a tranquil atmosphere. Be sure to pack sturdy walking boots, warm clothing, and a thermos of tea or coffee to make the most of your visit.

Arriving at Golitha Falls

Upon arrival, you’ll find a convenient car park at Inkie’s Cafe, just a short walk from the falls. The woodland area is part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), renowned for its rich biodiversity and geological features. Despite the chill of January, the trees and moss-covered rocks create an otherworldly green canopy, and the sound of rushing water adds to the immersive experience.

Exploring the Falls and the River Fowey Rapids

The main attraction of Golitha Falls is the series of waterfalls along the River Fowey. In January, the winter rains enhance the flow of the river, making the waterfalls particularly dramatic. The icy air mingling with the spray of water creates a refreshing and invigorating environment, perfect for a peaceful walk.

The trail through the woods is well-marked and meanders along the riverbank. Along the way, you’ll encounter the famous Fowey rapids, where the water rushes over rocks and boulders, creating a mesmerizing display of nature’s power. The rapids’ energetic movement contrasts beautifully with the stillness of the surrounding forest, making it an ideal spot for photos.

Wildlife and Natural Beauty

Golitha Falls is home to a variety of wildlife, even in winter. Look out for robins hopping along the paths and listen for the call of woodland birds. The lush greenery of mosses and lichens adds a vibrant touch to the landscape, reminding visitors of nature’s resilience even in the colder months.

A Warm Finish

After exploring the falls, we stopped at the nearby Inkie’s Smokehouse, a highly recommended café just by the car park. Their hearty menu of hot drinks and smoked meats provided the perfect way to warm up after our walk. The combination of good food and the cozy atmosphere made for a satisfying end to our adventure.

Tips for Visiting Golitha Falls in Winter

Wear appropriate footwear: The paths can be muddy and slippery in January, so sturdy, waterproof boots are essential.

Dress warmly: Layers, hats, and gloves will keep you comfortable during your walk.

Plan your visit early: With shorter daylight hours, it’s best to arrive in the morning to make the most of your day.

Bring a camera: The dramatic winter scenery offers fantastic photo opportunities.

Why Golitha Falls Makes a Perfect Winter Day Trip

Visiting Golitha Falls in January offers a unique perspective on this beautiful natural spot. The quieter trails and dramatic winter landscapes make it a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle. For guests staying at Trevorrick Farm Cottages, it’s an easily accessible destination that combines adventure, relaxation, and a true sense of connection with nature.

So, next time you’re staying with us, add Golitha Falls to your itinerary. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a gentle stroll, this magical woodland escape is sure to leave you with cherished memories.

The Play Farm Shop Van
Step into our charming Play Farm Shop Van, where kids can pretend to sell fresh produce, weigh vegetables, or tally up their imaginary earnings at the till. It’s a fun, interactive way to spark creativity and role-playing skills.

Originally, and cleverly, designed specifically for us, the Padstow Town Council play park near The Lawns car park, now have a play farm van too!

I wanted this as a more “girly” vehicle, but boys love it just as much.

The Play Tractor
Our large-sized Play Tractor is the perfect centerpiece for any little farmer’s adventure. With realistic details and plenty of room to climb, this robust structure is a favorite for kids looking to “drive” their way into hours of farmyard fun.

When I wanted to buy one I made mistake of asking Mike, and he said “no”, even though we’d “only” got the play combine harvester at the time. So I ordered it to arrive on his birthday! After seeing how much fun guest’s children have on it, he did not say no when I told him we were buying the land rover and farm shop van! You will find the same play tractor at the Pickwick Inn just along the road, but we got ours first!

The Play Combine Harvester
Harvest the fun with our Play Combine Harvester! This impressive and very large piece of equipment is packed with imaginative features, offering children the chance to climb, explore, and learn about farming machinery in a playful way.

It was the first play vehicle we bought, and we bought it when our now grown up children were quite little, as the largest in the range so as to appeal to the greatest age range of children, with a ladder into the cab, an internal ladder and a big slide.

The Play Land Rover
Adventure awaits in our Play Land Rover! Designed to look just like the real thing, this iconic farm vehicle, invites kids to hop in, pretend to drive, and embark on endless off-road journeys around the farm.

We went for the roofless version, so there is plenty of room for parents to sit in the back whilst the children “drive” to their heart’s content.

And don’t forget……..

The Play Trains

Ok, it’s not farm related, but we also have a large play train, also made by Outdoor Play People. And it has two steering wheels so no fighting. The play train and the play tractor are situated in our large “sheep playing field”. Over the summer we keep some tame sheep and lambs in there for our guests to meet, and they often jump in and out of the play train and tractor!!!! Who says animals can’t play also!

We also have a mini Farm themed train with two carriages in our main play area, this one made in Devon, great for budding toddler-farmers. And we have two matching benches with farm animal ends, for parents to sit on which they watch their children having so much fun!

At Trevorrick Farm, guests of all ages can enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience: taking a sheep for a walk on a halter. Imagine a gentle, woolly friend by your side as you lead them around the farm and up the lane to see the glorious view towards the Iron Bridge and over the Camel Estuary. It’s a delightful and unique activity that’s sure to be a memorable highlight for both children and adults alike.

Walking a sheep on a halter is an opportunity to bond with these gentle animals and get a closer look at their endearing personalities. The sheep are friendly, and a few tame ones usually occupy our large “sheep” playing field, and they enjoy playing alongside visitors, as well as keeping the grass down: environmentally friendly lawn mowers! They provide a slow-paced and peaceful walk that allows you to connect with nature in a truly special way. For kids, it’s an exciting and educational experience as they learn how to handle and care for a farm animal. And adults, too, find it’s a relaxing and novel activity—a welcome escape from everyday routines, bringing out the inner child in all of us!

In spring, Trevorrick Farm becomes even more enchanting with the (hopeful!) arrival of lambs from February half-term onwards. Guests can see and interact with the newborn lambs, which brings an added sense of joy to the farm experience. There’s something truly heartwarming about watching the lambs play and hearing their soft bleats echo across the farm. It’s a rare opportunity to witness the early stages of farm life, and for many, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see lambs up close.

Walking sheep and spending time with lambs make Trevorrick Farm a unique, hands-on farm stay that combines fun and learning. These experiences create memories to cherish and give guests an authentic glimpse into the rhythms of countryside life.
