What is a Bench Press ?

The bench press is a strength training exercise. What is a Roman Chair ?

The Roman Chair exercise is a type of lower-back hyperextension performed to strengthen the lower back, especially the erector spinae. This is accomplished by the chair holding the person in place as he/she bends at the waist and then extends their body upwards.

Enter into the chair, with the pad supporting the front of your upper thighs and locking the lower leg (typically at the ankle or heel) and bend forward at the waist. As you bend forward, your upper body will become closer to the ground. When you have bent as far as comfortable, use the muscles of your lower back to straighten your body, extending your upper body upwards. Many people at this point extend to the point of a hyperextension curving their backs beyond typical straightness. Great care must be used during this exercise as the lower back can easily be injured. People new to the roman chair exercise should consult a fitness professional.

What is a Lat Pulldown ?

The pulldown exercise or the cable lat pulldown is a compound exercise designed to stress and develop the Latissimus dorsi(Lat). To feel this muscle in its motion, stand with your elbow in the air 45 deg from vertical above and in front of your shoulder. Rotate it through in a smooth arc down and back until it stops and is pointing down and back towards the floor at a 45 deg angle. The bunched up feeling in your back, where your arm hits, is your Lat. ^[1]

The pulldown is a compound exercise because it requires movement at two joints (elbow and shoulder). The full range of the motion required by the exercise also works the biceps muscle in the arm and the muscles of the middle back. The pulldown uses a similar motion as the chinup.

The exercise is useful when the weight to be used is larger or smaller than the bodyweight of the individual performing the exercise or, there are other mitigating factors that prevent the use of the chinup as effective for this muscle group. ^[1]This is an excellent exercise for beginners to back work because it is a compound exercise. Maintaining correct form and setting up machines sometimes requires assistance.

What is a Shoulder Press ?

The press, overhead press or shoulder press is a weight training exercise which focuses on the development of the shoulders. What is a Pectoral Fly ?

A fly (or flye) is a strength training exercise in which the hand and arm move through an arc while the elbow is kept at a constant angle. Flyes are used to work the muscles of the upper body.
