Point has already manufactured and installed flood doors and gates in a number of projects. Jonathan Rollison, sales director at Point, said: “the two businesses will work together to bring approved products to the market. Our manufacturing experience in the marine and offshore industry coupled with FCI’s flood control projects experience makes absolute sense for the UK client base.”

Mr. Rollison said that all marketing and sales for this sector would be handled by FCI through their offices and Point would provide them with the specialist door and gate products to install in their flood prevention and control projects.

“They have a wealth of knowledge associated with the subject of flood defence and we have decades of experience in manufacturing and testing watertight doors and gates,” he said.

Point Engineering has been a Lloyds Register approved manufacturer for six years and already has DNV approvals in place for specialist door products used in marine, offshore and renewables projects.

The demonstrator unit is securely moored in the River Humber 60+ metres from the river bank. Following some delays the piling finished allowing the unit to be towed down the river from its temporary mooring in Alexandra Dock (Green Port Hull). 

Point Engineering completed the mechanical engineering preparation works to the unit while alongside and also completed the final assembly of the 60+ metre access bridge at Humber Work Boats site near Immingham. The bridge sections were manufactured at Point Engineering in Hull and then transported to Immingham for final assembly prior to load out.

The final touches and detail on the unit and the bridge will be completed by Point prior to cable installation.

Once cables are installed and connected, the tidal generator will provide power to The Deep.

After the Lord Mayor cut the ribbon, the Police Band played a medley of tunes finishing with the Mayors favourite tune -”Thunderbirds”.

The Point Engineering designers, engineers, tradesmen and apprentices involved in the project also attended and were presented with pin badges commemorating the 150th celebratory year of the Humberside Police Concert Band.

Lord Mayor of Hull Councillor Colin Inglis said ”The new bandstand will be a long-term asset for the city and will enhance the musical opportunities we offer.”

“It is a considerable achievement in the current climate that we have been able to provide such a top class facility without having to draw on the Council’s capital and I would like to thank everyone involved with the project.”

Turf has been cut, earth removed and foundations laid in preparation for the structure to be built in Queens Gardens, Hull. The bandstand has been designed with a traditional feel and the project will provide trainees with the opportunity to contribute to the construction of it.

Construction is in mild or stainless steel using their tried and tested rebated A60 fire door and “Z” section frame for welding or bolting in to position. Three point latching system with optional escape bar equipment is fitted.

Point Engineering has been appointed as main contractor after Neptune Renewable Energy Ltd has been given parliamentary approval for the deployment of its world-leading tidal stream power device.

 It has been issued with a Transport and Works Act Order following a decision by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to allow deployment of the Neptune Proteus 1000 demonstrator and the installation of a shore bridge in the Humber.

 The device, which is on course to be deployed during the autumn, is to provide power for The Deep submarium, Hull’s successful millennium visitor attraction.

 Neptune Renewable Energy has also now awarded contracts to two Humber-based firms to carry out the final preparatory work.

 Point Engineering Ltd of east Hull is building the 59-metre steel shore bridge that will allow maintenance access and carry the power cables that connect the Neptune Proteus to The Deep.

 The shore bridge will be installed by Humber Work Boats Ltd of North Killingholme, which is also carrying out the piling work and will be responsible for positioning and securing the device. The four piles measure one metre in diameter and 28 metres in length and will be driven into the estuary bed approximately 65 metres from the seawall.

 The 150-tonne Neptune Proteus was towed along Hull’s William Wright Dock in July 2010 and generated levels of electrical power output beyond the minimum commercial requirement. It has since undergone final fitting out and electrical installation.

 Glenn Aitken, finance director of Neptune Renewable Energy, said that the company was pleased that all the vital elements were now in place and that they were able to use the specialist skills of Humber-based companies to complete the final part of the process.

 “Gaining the Transport and Works Act Order was a complex procedure in which Neptune Renewable Energy had to demonstrate its technology met the exacting standards required by the DECC and it is excellent news that this has now been issued.

 ”We are also very happy to be partnering with Point Engineering and Humber Work Boats as it provides a benefit to the local economy and also helps builds local knowledge around the Neptune Proteus which has been developed utilising the ideal conditions for tidal power provided by the Humber estuary.

 “As the region develops into a leading UK centre for renewable energy, we need to raise awareness of the potential for tidal power business as a significant contributor. It has some clear advantages over wind power including being a totally predictable and continuous source of clean energy as well as being visually unobtrusive.”

 Last weekend (August 6 and 7) also saw the installation of the electrical equipment at the control room for the Neptune Proteus located at The Deep. Further work on this will be carried out over the following month.

 Colin Brown, chief executive of The Deep, added: “The prospect of being able to use energy harnessed from the Humber takes us to a whole new level and is entirely fitting for us as an ocean-themed visitor attraction.”

 Neptune Renewable Energy is presently developing its first commercial array of five advanced Neptune Proteus 1500s which are also planned for deployment in the Humber and will provide power for 5,000 homes.

 The company is a member of the industry group Team Humber Marine Alliance, along with Point Engineering Ltd and Humber Work Boats Ltd.

Interest in the range of marine doors and hatches designed and manufactured by Point was high during the two day event. Jonathan Rollison, sales director said “this is the second year we have attended with Team Humber and again it’s been excellent. We’ve many customers based here who use our specialist doors, hatches and manufacturing services, and I’m very pleased to hear that our A60 fire rated offshore module doors have been well received by the operators of an accommodation barge recently converted. The barge is currently being prepared for charter.” Point will be back in Aberdeen in September to attend the Offshore Europe trade exhibition.

he Correa will be used to create Point’s first fully machined door. And beyond that and the defence project, there are plenty of opportunities to broaden our capabilities further. “This is a CNC machine with a universal head, so we can mill quite complex shapes from it”, continues Kevin. “I’m sure it will be invaluable to our development as we explore new applications for our technology and expertise.”

Jonathan Rollison, financial and sales director, explains. “We anticipated achieving a level lower than we did, but the doors withstood the testing much more successfully than we expected, so we’re really happy with the outcome. This door, and the processes and materials involved in its manufacture, now mean we can provide a level of security not previously available. It’s a new product that should be good news for any personnel posted in sensitive areas, such as near the Somali coastline.”
