Top Rated: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, 6″ High Resolution Display with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi (£109)gets the top rating of 72% and is a Best Buy. The reviewers found it easy to use in dim light and liked the enormous choice of books, newspapers and magazines available, plus the option for a larger font than its competitors. It doesn’t have a card slot.

Also rans: NOOK Simple Touch GlowLight (£109) achieved 66%. It uses the epub format which allows you access to plenty of books, but no newspapers or magazines. There is no web browser – not so good if you want to embed links in your eBook. Small storage space means you may need to buy a card to store books beyond the first 240.

The KOBO Glo (£100) ranked with 63%. It has more storage than the Nook and was rated light, simple and easy to use. It lost points as it only has touchscreen controls that can be slow to use, and no function to navigate by page number.

None of the models tested run audio files.

Recently I’ve been working on readying some of our eBooks for Smashwords. Smashwords is a site that makes your eBooks available on as many different eReaders as possible. Using their ‘meatgrinder’ programme they deal with all the formatting issues so your book can be bought and read for Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Kobo Reader, iPads, iPhones and more.

There are some technical requirements for when you submit your book, but this is a case where less is more, and you will do best if you have simple Word files without fancy formatting or design. And, at risk of repeating what I have said in previous articles, you still need to invest in editing and proof reading to ensure that the reader gets a 100% professional experience when they buy your book.

So, Smashwords is a great way to get your book online and available to millions of buyers.

When most people consider writing a book, they first think of approaching a mainstream publisher. Murielle Maupoint explains the benefits and issues of mainstream publishing, “You receive an advance on royalties cheque and the publisher will deal with all aspects of designing, editing, printing, marketing, selling and distributing your book. The downside invariably is that you lose a certain amount of control and you will only get a very small percentage for royalties on each book sold. Whilst this model is a great way to get your work known by the masses, the truth is that the vast percentage of manuscripts sent to mainstream publishers are rejected.” Nowadays, if you do get a contract from a traditional publisher, it is extremely likely to contain options for eBook publishing. Do explore exactly what the publisher practices: some are more proactive about actually taking up the eBook option than others. Get guidance on contracts from the Society of Authors, and find lists of publishers and the sectors they cover within the Writers and Artists Yearbook.

Before you commit completely to selling your own products through an eCommerce site, you may want to see what response your products get by selling through sites such as eBay and Etsy. There are lots of other sites similar to these online nowadays and they are a great way to test if what you are planning on making is right for your market.

Another great thing with selling through eBay is that you can sell almost anything. If you are looking to raise some capital to start your business or create an income stream, selling things from around your hue that you no longer need will help build those funds up, especially at this time of year.

When you are considering selling on these sites, you need to take into consideration the sellers fees as well as the fee PayPal will charge if you use their service for handling payments.

If you are looking at selling your products on such sites, you will also need to see if you can sell through the site you want. Etsy will only sell items that are handmade, vintage or are supplies and other sites such as Folksy have similar listing regulations.

In this part of the Making Money Online series we are going to be looking at affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is where you sell other peoples products and services usually for a set percentage. Using affiliate marketing as an income stream has a number of advantages. It is a quick way to start earning if you do not already have a product of your own. You only have to market and sell the products, you do not have to worry about importing, delivery or customer service. You can make a healthy income from affiliate marketing if you have the right audience and choose the right affiliate promotions.

Affiliate marketing online is a great way to earn an almost passive income, however do not underestimate the work it takes to build the loyalty and trust initially that is necessary to make sales. Once the hard work is done some internet marketers have likened affiliate marketing to having a ‘license to print money’. Remember with affiliate marketing you do not have to import, create or deliver the products. You simply make the sale and the money is deposited straight into your bank.

It may not be quite as easy as that, you have t chooe a niche and make sure it is a niche that is right for you and your target market. It also helps if you have a large email marketing list for you to promote to. But once you have all the thing in the right place, it can bring in a nice amount of money.
