It has never ceased to amaze me that so many people are prepared to work so hard for so long to make so little on eBay. Despite all those emails that tell you it is possible to make thousands of pounds for a few hours work on eBay the truth is it can be really hard work.

Take the case of those intrepid individuals who spend their spare time scouring around car boot sales and charity shops searching for bargains to sell online. By the time they have calculated their travelling expenses, time spent looking for items, listing and photographing the profit in the end can be pretty small.

It must be similar to being on a treadmill forever chasing the next product, the next bargain. Unless you are dealing in high ticket items any eBay business that relies on selling individual products is going to be labour intensive.

The obvious answer is to buy items in bulk so that you can sell a large quantity of one product and yet only write one listing and take one photograph. Selling multiple items also makes the packing and shipping a lot easier.

The first problem for any would be eBay entrepreneur is to find a suitable source of products. The 5 options, manufacturers, wholesalers, dropshippers, offline auctions and eBay wholesale category.

Manufacturers. Most manufacturers will only supply large companies direct but there might be opportunities if you deal with smaller manufacturers.

Wholesalers: These days it is quite easy to find wholesalers by going onto Google and typing in the product your interested in + “wholesaler” (i.e beauty products + wholesaler).

Dropshippers. A dropshipping is a method by which you advertise the product without actually purchasing it. The dropshipper will ship it out for you when you make a sale and pay him. Your profit is the difference between what you pay the dropshipper and what you charge your customer.

Offline Auctions. Most major towns have an offline auction house and some specialise in bankrupt and liquidated stock . It can be worth getting on their catalogue list.

eBay Wholesale category. It is always worth browsing through the wholesale sections of eBay. I have found quite a few lots there that could be broken down into individual items.

In the coming months we are going to look at all 5 of these options in detail so make sure you visit UKAuctionline regularly.

Hello
Its Dave Bromley back in the chair once again and I can’t tell you how great it is to be back. First of all I have to thank my pal Steve for looking after the site so well for the last couple of years. It has given me a chance to get my life back on an even keel after the loss of my wife and get things sorted in my own mind
.
Thanks a lot Steve.

Well a lot has been happening whilst I have been away and it really is catching up time for me. Finally the eBay/ Skype row seems to have been sorted and they are all friends again. Meg Whitman the former CEO of eBay is seeking high office in the States, look out Arnie she is after your job..

Only this week a new auction site has been launched but this is one with a difference. Just for a minute spare some sympathy for those poor billionaires who have seen their fortunes fall so that they are now only multi millionaires. It appears times are tough at the top and they need to rid themselves of their planes, yachts and jewellery
.
A new auction site www.billionerexchange.com has come to their rescue and offers an auction site especially for them. If you are looking for a second hand Ferrari or Lear jet that is the site to go. Don’t you just feel so sorry for the filthy rich?

I see that eBay have recently launched their own online magazine The Inside Source. EBay say that the magazine, www.theinsidesource.com, is geared to “inspired shoppers” and features stories based on what eBay’s millions of users are looking for according to the publication.
It will feature articles, analysis and opinions from eBay shoppers and journalists. The site will also point to eBay’s most-watched and most-searched items. eBay expect the magazine to inspire eBay users by profiling an art dealer discovering museum-quality pieces to a breakdown of the hottest trends in handbags. Personally I see it as another move to re establish them in the face of growing competition especially from Amazon.

That is about it for today but I intend to develop this blog and will hope to post to it at least twice a week. I would also welcome any comments that readers might have.
Talk too soon
Dave

If you ever doubted that real bargains could be found on eBay then the a guy called Morale Park from Henham, Essex, could prove you wrong. Recently he purchased an item simply described as “old film” on eBay for just $5.68
You can imagine how shocked he was to discover that what he had actually purchased was a previously unknown seven-minute Charlie Chaplin film called Zepped. The film which runs for just 7 minutes begins with Chaplin wishing he could leave America to join his British countrymen in the war, before being taken on a cloud and deposited on an English church spire. It then shows footage of Zeppelin airships flying over England during the First World War and footage from some other early Chaplin films.
Currently Morale is in the USA featuring in a documentary about his unusual find.
As to the actual value of the film experts believe that it could range from anywhere between £3,000 and £40,000.

This is just an update of what is happening at UK Auctionline. We are currently having problems getting some of the changes to the site instigated by our web designers who appear to have gone on walk about. These problems will be sorted very shortly and we will then be able to move forward.

It is very frustrating because at the moment there is a big opportunity for those people who want to build a business using eBay as part of their marketing package. In the UK last night there was an excellent program on ITV highlighting 3 people who are really cashing in by targeting niche markets on the Internet. And at least two of the featured successful entrepreneurs started by selling on eBay.

A few years ago you could not move on the Internet for people offering e-books, videos and courses on how to get rich using eBay. Most of the material was rubbish and those expecting to make overnight fortunes were sadly disappointed.

For a while there was a lot of rubbish put up for sale and not surprisingly very little of it actually got sold. Now the bandwagon has rolled on to the next get rich scheme and eBay seems to have finally put its house in order. They have done this by banning digitally downloadable products and taking a far stronger line on pirating. This can only be a good thing for genuine people who are prepared to gain the knowledge and skills needed to build a successful full or part time business using eBay.

It used to be said that you could sell anything on eBay but that is most definitely not true any longer. Last time I looked it seemed that only about 50% of the items put up for sale actually sold. Gone are the days when you could just slap up any old listing and watch the bids or sales come rolling in. Today you have to approach eBay selling in a professional manner if you want to succeed.

Another important difference today is that eBay or any other online auction site should not be your sole outlet. It is a great low cost way to start in business and it will help you to build up a customer base and email list. However, you long term aim should be to have your own web site to allow you to build a solid sales base. In the coming months UKAuctionline will be featuring articles and information on exactly how you can do this without having to be a technocrat or spending vast amounts of money.

Now back to trying to sort out these web designers!
You are literally studying how eBay works, from a customer’s point of view. You may not realize this, but this eBay buyer experience will actually make you a much better seller – right from the very start.

eBay works just like any other business. You have to determine what people want to buy before you can hope to be successful. There are very specific items
that sell really well on eBay – you just have to figure out what those items are. There are many resources for finding out this information.

You will find hundreds of pages of help and information on the UKAuctionline web site. Read all of the information we provides for you at
the site. Also register for our monthly newsletter packed full of great
ideas and suggestions. The information is free and you will learn a
great deal from it. Take full advantage of this – before you start setting up your first auction or your eBay store! By reading through all of the resources, you
will avoid making numerous mistakes that so many before you have made. building a successful eBay business.
know everything you need to know to get started with a money making
eBay business of your very own.

Hi everyone

I found this article whilst browsing the web today, thought it both humorous and informative for those of you who struggle to find suitable packaging material just when you need it. Read on.

Regards

Steve H

This is the most boring stage of the process and subsequently where some eBay sellers let themselves down. If the buyer receives their purchase poorly packed and broken then they are not going to be happy and will want a refund and more importantly never buy off you again which will have negated all the hard work that you put into the previous stages of your professional auction listing.

Packing is not difficult but if you get carried away then it will impact greatly on your profit, all items fall into two categories :

Envelope Packages - always use padded envelopes as these will protect your items properly and

Box Packages - always use a sturdy box and ideally wrap the item in bubble wrap

As I mentioned packaging costs can impact on your profit, however, if you carefully work out what is required when you are calculating the shipping charge then this cost is covered by the customer as they pay the shipping charge.

This doesn't mean use the first supplier of packaging that you can find as the shipping charge will have an effect on the listing and the customers perception of you, the customer assumes that the shipping charge relates only to the postage cost and not to the packaging costs so when they see that they paid more than the actual cost of postage they assume that you are ripping them off and this will ruin anyone's professional image.

There are numerous suppliers of packaging available, with some very good suppliers available on eBay itself. However there are other alternatives, your items do not have to go out in box's that are plain or covered in your logo (if you have one). Customers will not mind as long as thier item arrives in one piece.

My advice would be to become a recycler, when you visit the store keep a look out for boxes that you can use to pack your items and also for packaging materials to secure the item with within the box. The stores are more than willing to let you take these(always ask first) as they only throw them away or recycle them themselves.

I am going to let you in on a big secret, there is a great source of FREE BUBBLE WRAP that anyone can get access to. All it takes is one word :

BANANA'S

Banana's are the single biggest selling fruit in superstores and every box of them comes packed with a sheet of bubble wrap within to protect the delicate fruit. All you do is ask your local produce department manager in your local store to save it for you and hey presto instant FREE packaging. Do not worry about the banana smell tainting the bubble wrap as the bananas are removed from the packaging before they are ripe (the stage they start to smell) as the stores like to ensure a customer life of the product and as such sell them just as they are ripening. Trust me, try it and see.

When you are packing the item, always put a thank you note in to ensure that the customer knows you are grateful for their purchase and this will also raise your image within their mind. Always use a good strong tape on the box and ensure all flaps are taped down and that no one can gain entry to the box without cutting the tape. When you are putting the customers address on the box I would recommend that you type it out on the PC, firstly it looks more professional and also not everyone can read your writing and this will only cause delays in the mail.

It is also advisable to always get proof of postage from the mail or better still send it recorded, this acts in two ways.. it provides a means of tracking the delivery so that you know the customer received it (helps against fraudulent 'not received' claims) and it also provides a insurance cover against loss and damage. The relative costs are minor compared to the piece of mind it gives you and the customer.

Hi everyone

A quick look at what is happening on eBay to allay all buyers worries, and to grow confidence in using the system. A small step forward I think. Only time will tell if the volume of sales gets back to where it once was, before the recession.

Best Regards
Steve H

A shift in how we use DSRs to measure quality

eBay is committed to continually improving the marketplace for sellers and buyers. Over the last 18 months there have been a number of changes to reduce the cost of listing and improve the speed and efficiency of sales.

That’s why from July 2009 we will increase the focus on measuring and rewarding sellers, not just for volume, but also for the consistently excellent service they offer.

To step up the service standards we’ll be evolving the way we look at Detailed Seller Ratings – DSRs and also setting new minimum standards for all sellers. We’re also changing the PowerSeller programme to give the highest rewards to those PowerSellers who provide the best rated quality of service. These PowerSellers will be given a new status – eBay Top-rated seller.

We know that sellers with fewer low DSR scores spend less time dealing with claims and enjoy increased buyer loyalty and repeat business. So, from July 2009 we’ll start tracking low rating DSRs of 1s and 2s that a seller has got in each of these categories:

    * Item description
* Communication
* Dispatch time
* Postage & packaging costs

You’ll be able to see a snapshot of how you’re getting on in your Seller Dashboard. It will be updated monthly, starting at the end of this month (July 2009). And, in October, you’ll be able to see a daily update.

Low rates of 1s and 2s in DSRs will be one of the criteria for eBay sellers to qualify for the new Top-rated seller status.

TAKE ACTION

o Get familiar with the new focus on quality and low DSRs (1s and 2s), the new standards for all eBay sellers, the PowerSeller programme, and the new Top-rated seller tier.
o Starting from the end of July, check your Seller Dashboard for a current snapshot of your low DSRs - updated monthly. Watch for the new Seller Dashboard coming in October for more insight, including daily updates. Remember to check it on a regular basis.
o Have a look at our tips to improve your Feedback DSRs to keep a high positive Feedback rating and minimise the risk of receiving low DSRs scores of 1s and 2s.

FAQs

Why the change of emphasis on sellers having a few 1s and 2s instead of the current DSR averages?

DSRs will continue to be an important measure for seller performance. But we are gradually focusing on the rate of low scores (1s and 2s) for several reasons.

    * Buyers have different interpretations of what they consider a high score. But leaving a 1or 2 is a clear sign they’re not happy.
* For sellers, monitoring their rate of 1s and 2s gives a clearer picture of where they need to improve – whether it’s item description, communication, delivery times and/or postage cost.
* It will be easier and more profitable for sellers to focus on providing a level of service to their buyers that rarely, if ever, gets them a score of 1 or 2 than by trying to achieve perfect scores.

How are rates of 1s and 2s calculated and how can I find out my current rates?

The rates of 1s and 2s are calculated for all four DSRs: Item Description, Communication, Dispatch Time, and P&P Cost. There are allowed rates of 1s and 2s for each of the four DSRs for eBay Top-rated sellers and all other sellers. The calculation is as follows:

Number of 1’s or 2’s received, divided by the total number of transactions

Remember, the total number of transactions includes all transactions, not just transactions where DSR scores were received. Here are some examples of how rates of 1s or 2s are calculated.

At the end of this month (July), you’ll be able to see a monthly updated snapshot of your rate of 1s and 2s by each DSR on your Seller Dashboard. Starting in October, you’ll be able to see your ratings updated daily.

Wow 10 years already! It only seem's like only yesterday since we in the UK got our chance to trade in this unique marketplace. Congratulations and well done to all the team at eBay. co.uk Keep up the good work and hears to your next 10 years.

eBay.co.uk has seen over 950 million items sold in the past decade - testimony to our buyers, enduring love of shopping and pursuit of a bargain.

From the first ever eBay.co.uk sale (a 3-track CD from German rockers The Scorpions sold for £2.89), the eBay.co.uk site has become an indicator of changing consumer tastes. We're proud that our site is also a platform for charity fundraising and entrepreneurialism. More than £10.5m has been raised for more than 3,500 charities since the launch of eBay for Charity in 2006. And, of the 123,000 British businesses now trading on eBay, over 170 turn over more than a million pounds a year from selling on our site.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all our buyers and sellers for your business over the past 10 years and we look forward to providing you with a great place to buy and sell for the next 10 years. Find out more about eBay.co.uk over the past ten years.

Regards,

The eBay.co.uk Team

eBay.co.uk Celebrates Ten Years of Buying and Selling

- 964 million items sold -
- 171 businesses turning over more than £1m a year -
- From Britney Spears’ discarded tissue, to David Beckham’s BMW and the sale of a handbag every 25 seconds -

1999 was the year Posh and Becks tied the knot, Britney Spears released Baby, One More Time and, also, the year eBay arrived in the UK. In the past decade, eBay.co.uk has seen over 950 million items sold on the site, testimony to Brits’ enduring love of shopping and pursuit of a bargain.

The scale of shopping on eBay.co.uk has resulted in ‘eBayability’ becoming the ultimate barometer of what’s hot and what’s not in the UK at any point in time. Nothing is too big, small or bizarre as eBay.co.uk’s legion of loyal users has proven over the years. From Bentleys to holiday homes, unique celebrity items to bargain vintage outfits and only-on-eBay must-have Christmas toys, Britain has been gripped by the phenomenon that is eBay.co.uk.

The first ever eBay.co.uk sale was a 3-track CD from German rockers The Scorpions, which went for £2.89. Over the past decade, eBay.co.uk has become an indicator of changing consumer tastes. Back in 1999, the most popular items on the site were Pokemon trading cards. These days, we’re more likely to buy fashion brands and accessories on the site, as Brits flock online to find great deals, with an item of women’s clothing now selling every three seconds

As eBay.co.uk marks its tenth anniversary, it also celebrates becoming one of the UK’s most iconic brands. It is currently the fourth most searched-for term on Google*. The online marketplace has also been a platform for the emergence of new shopping behaviours. Over 70,000 savvy Brits are beating the recession by going ‘shopping neutral’ – balancing their budgets by selling as much as they spend on the site.

eBay.co.uk is about more than just shopping. It’s a platform for charity fundraising and entrepreneurialism. More £10.5m has been raised for more than 3,500 charities since the launch of eBay for Charity in 2006. And, of the 123,000 British businesses now trading on eBay, over 170 turn over more than a million pounds a year on the site. In 2008, the value of sales on eBay.co.uk exceeded the GDP of 68 countries.

Mark Lewis, MD of eBay in the UK comments: “eBay.co.uk has come a long way in the past ten years. From our beginnings as an auction site, over half the items for sale today are available to ‘Buy Now’. Likewise, whilst eBay.co.uk was once dominated by second hand items, the fastest growth is in sales of new products at knock-down prices. And, these days, you’re just as likely to buy from a business as a private seller, with an increasing number of entrepreneurs andestablished retail brands like Schuh, Littlewoods and Argos all selling on eBay.co.uk.”

Lewis continues: “Ten years on, we might have fallen out of love with Pokemon and perhaps The Scorpions no longer have the appeal of yesteryear. However, one thing remains - eBay.co.uk is still the favourite platform for British shoppers looking for great value and unrivalled choice, to earn some extra money on the side or to make their entrepreneurial dreams come true.”

Hi everyone

eBay was built on a simple idea - that we could empower people by building a global trading platform where practically anyone could buy or sell practically anything. But that idea is now under threat from certain brand owners and manufacturers who are trying to turn back the clock and block the sale of their products on online marketplaces and other websites across the EU. Ultimately, what is at stake is the right of sellers to compete fairly in the wider online marketplace, and the right of buyers to be able to access the best possible deals from the widest possible selection of goods.

Please take the time to read the rest of the article, if you agree as I do then simply log into your own eBay account and sign the petition.

Regards
Steve H

Some of these brand owners argue that their objective is to prevent the sale of counterfeits on eBay.
But thanks to our work with 31,000 other rights owners, only 0.15% of listings last year were detected or
reported as potentially counterfeit. The real aim of these brands is to block the sale of all their products on our site - regardless of whether such items are new or second-hand, genuine or fake. It's not just luxury items that are affected, but also everyday items like children's toys, electronic equipment, lawnmowers and pushchairs. And if we want to prevent other brand owners from following suit, we need to act now.
We are therefore calling on European policymakers to amend EU competition law to stop these unfair
trade practices. But we need your help to persuade them to take action. If you would like to join our
campaign against online trade barriers, please sign our petition.

Regards,
Your eBay Team

Full text of the petition:

DEMAND AN END TO UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES

We, the undersigned, oppose attempts by certain brand owners and manufacturers to unfairly limit the sale and resale of their products on the internet.

Increasingly, these brand owners are blocking the sale on online marketplaces and other websites of luxury items, as well as everyday items like children’s toys, electronic equipment, lawnmowers and pushchairs - regardless of whether such items are new or second-hand, genuine or fake. If we want to prevent other brands from following suit, we need to act now.

We believe that such restrictions represent an unfair restraint on the right to buy and sell goods freely in the European Single Market and are based less on a motivation to benefit consumers than they are on a desire to artificially inflate prices and profits by eliminating competition from online sellers, many of them small businesses.

We accept that brand owners should be able to determine, within limits, how their products are initially sold. However, we believe strongly that they should not be allowed to impose blanket bans on internet selling, and any other restrictions on trade must be based on objective and publicly available criteria which are of proven benefit to consumers. For example, manufacturers should generally not be allowed to insist that internet retailers must have an offline retail store before they can sell online, or impose more onerous sales conditions to online sellers. Above all, consumers should be allowed to resell items they have paid for.

We therefore call on European policymakers to amend EU competition law to outlaw excessive limitations on internet selling and force brands to publish all vertical agreements which are designed to limit the trade in their products. At a time when consumers’ purchasing power is increasingly under threat from the current financial and economic crisis, we urge European policymakers to take decisive action to promote competition and free trade within the European Union and call on political parties across Europe to support the right to buy and sell freely over the internet.

Please consider the above and go to your eBay account and Register for eBay Grassroots Campaigns

Hi Everyone

An interesting article from the desk of our good friend Dave Bromley. Please read on.

Regards
Steve H

If you have been around as long as me you may remember when eBay was a novelty and you could just about sell anything through the online auction. How things have changed. Buyers are becoming more demanding, more critical and more cautious.

This means that to be successful in today’s market sellers have to change their approach. To be fair many sellers having been adapting their approach to the changing market conditions for many years have prospered as a result.

To put it simply to become a successful eBay marketer requires professionalism, a business like attitude and quite a bit of work. The days of quickly throwing something up on eBay are long gone.

So does this mean the end of the good times for eBay sellers? It does if you are someone who just wants to put any old rubbish up on eBay and hope to make a quick buck. When eBay was first launched 14 years ago it was like amateur night, everyone was feeling their way and learning as they went along. Fourteen years later most of the lessons have been learnt and if you want to succeed on eBay you have to offer quality and value in a professional manner.

If you are prepared to do this then there is an opportunity for anyone to build a business using eBay as a launch pad. But as you build your business you need to be prepared to diversify. Relying on eBay as your sole outlet in the future could be a mistake.

Another eBay old wives tale was that if you sold on Bay you did not need a web site. That may have been true in the past but today no serious seller would consider having their own web site. Using your About Me page and flyers with the items you send out you can build up visitors to your site. You can then turn those visitors into customers without the need to pay any further eBay fees.

Why make life difficult for yourself? Don’t try and sell anything, sell the things people want. Sell them in a professional manner and operate your whole selling business in the same manner. Sure you might ell the odd refrigerator to an Eskimo but I bet you could sell them a lot more fur coats.

Very important update from eBay, please read.

Regards
Steve H

As part of the Spring 2009 Update, announced on 16th April, we introduced a new, more efficient dispute resolution process that involves some changes to eBays User Agreement.

eBay Buyer Protection programme

The biggest change to the agreement is the inclusion of the eBay Buyer Protection policy. We intend to gradually extend eBay Buyer Protection to more and more buyers over 2009; not all buyers will be able to participate in eBay Buyer Protection straight away. Buyers will be able to get their problems resolved on eBay faster, and the new User Agreement incorporates the new policy and includes language, which describes the parameters of eBay Buyer Protection.

Under eBay Buyer Protection, eBay will, as always, encourage sellers to resolve any problem that their buyers may have. However, as part of this policy, there may be instances where a seller doesn't resolve a claim and we find in favour of the buyer, in which case eBay will pay the buyer and invoice the seller for the transaction amount. Where a seller fails to comply with the eBay Buyer Protection policy, eBay may also remove any special status associated with the account (e.g. PowerSeller status), reduce or eliminate any discounts received by the seller, decrease visibility of the seller's listings in search results, place certain requirements regarding payment options offered by the seller and potential holds on payments made through PayPal and/or restrict or suspend the seller's account.

As with earlier updates to the User Agreement, we've made other minor changes to reflect eBays current product and service offerings and industry legal standards. You'll see references to, eBay site services and tools where the old agreement simply reads, eBay site. These changes reflect the many new ways you can access eBays offerings through other websites, wireless devices, and tools.

The new User Agreement is effective immediately for new members registering on or after 27th May 2009, and on 8th July 2009, for current members. You don't need to do anything to accept the new User Agreement. If you don't wish to accept it, you can follow these instructions to close your account.

Regards,

Hi everyone

Some important updates from eBay I thought you might want to see.

Regards
Steve H

Buyers feel more confident about buying on eBay and sellers are more likely to see their listings convert to sales when PayPal is offered as a payment method. Through PayPal we can provide protection for buyers and sellers should things go wrong.

Here is an overview of the upcoming changes that will make it safer and easier for you to buy and sell on eBay.ie.

We're delighted to announce a significant expansion of the protection offered to buyers and sellers when using PayPal on eBay. These improvements will come into effect from June 2009.

Increased Buyer and Seller Protection

Good news for buyers:

Starting in June eBay buyers will receive protection up to the full value of their purchases (including postage) when they pay with PayPal. Terms apply.

Good news for sellers

Also from June all sellers will be eligible for expanded seller protection against certain claims for fraudulent payments and items not received - regardless of whether they are a PowerSeller or not. Under the terms of the expanded Seller Protection coverage, you will not be required to post to confirmed addresses for eBay transactions. There won't be an annual coverage limit and Seller Protection will cover the 190 countries supported by PayPal for sales made via eBay.

We'll give you an update on this soon.

Offering PayPal as a payment method
From 1st July 2009 all sellers on eBay.ie will be required to offer PayPal as a payment option on all listings. This will give buyers the confidence that PayPal Buyer Protection is available on every item that they purchase on eBay should something go wrong.

We've seen that transactions made using PayPal result in significantly reduced instances of fraud. With every listing on the site offering a traceable, protected payment option buyers will have increased confidence to return to shop with you again.

Sellers will continue to be able to offer other payment methods alongside PayPal, as per eBays Accepted Payments Policy. Listings in the Motors Vehicles, Property and Services categories will be exempt from this policy.
Payment Holds for eBay Items
To help ensure every eBay sale results in a satisfied buyer who will return again and again, PayPal is identifying a small percentage of transactions that pose the greatest risk to buyers. From 1st July 2009, PayPal may hold some of these payments to ensure that the transaction is completed to the satisfaction of the buyer.

Thanks for your support in helping to keep eBay.ie a safe place to buy and sell.

Regards,
