I took one month off because I wanted to make some wise decisions without wondering how I’d come across to an audience. Being in that position is never a good thing but one that many, more popular, celebrities are involved in every day.

Jesse: I could use some help with my blog, survivingthedayjob.com. It’s not yet a profitable business but that’s what I always intended to make it. I’ve spent the past year writing quantity and I’m now starting to writing quality.

My problem comes mostly in the form of finding my voice. I know if I can find that then I can start to retain viewers and maybe even grow. My other real problem is faceing fears. That one I’m working on.

I need a second opinion. When you read my stuff does it seem real or fake to you? What turns you off about the site and what’s one thing you like. I’m not looking to get cheered on. I already have enough family members telling me I’m awesome. I need a brutal reality check.

Stop listening to other experts for at least two week. Maybe even two months. It’s some of the best advice anyone has ever given me.

To be real, consider speaking your blog posts. As you listen to yourself talk, does it sound like you?

There’s a challenge for any public figure no matter how big or popular they are. That challenge is to put up a front and be someone they’re not so they can maintain their image in the eyes of their community. In the airlines our manuals actually had a description of this. As a captain I wasn’t supposed to do anything that would “break down the delicate shell of passenger confidence.”

I’m not afraid of what you think, or course. I even wrote about losing 85% of my income.

I am, however, making some decisions and defining longer term outcomes in my life and I don’t want the weight of “but what will I tell my listeners?” to be weighing on me. Thus the need for the short break.

Duane: Justin, I am making my way through your podcasts and have really been enjoying them. Thanks for all of the great information!

I am reaching completion, or so I think, on my e-book, “Low Cost Business Ideas for Teens and Adults”, but I am stuck on the design. I believe you said that you have hired yours. What is a reasonable price to expect to pay?

I am considering making an offer to a high school student. I will be speaking to a business class at our local high school next week and would like to encourage a young designer with an offer. I just don’t know if I have the resources if a fare price is a high price.

Things Josh is thinking through as we start a new year:

1. Unless you’re learned to be disciplined, the time flexibility that comes with self employment is a curse, not a blessing.
2. Who can tell you ‘no’? Who in your life do you trust enough for them to tell you ‘no’, and they’ll listen to you? In business? In spiritual matters? In marriage? In finances?
3. Who in your life has full access to you? Who really, really knows you? I had a friend attempt suicide this weekend… It was a huge shock to me. It makes me wonder how many people are living behind a false front, afraid to let anyone know what goes on in their mind and heart.

Hermes: What system do you use to keep track of clients notes, future follow up events and such? What do you recommend? Is there something connected with a calendar?

Many software packages exists, but few have integrated calendars. I talk about why that’s important. I use a mix of Salesforce, Evernote, dropbox, and Google Docs to keep track of everything.

Timm: I am wondering about your comment a few years back about problems purchasing domains from one company and then using another service (like Blue Host) for domain hosting. Is this still an issue? It’s been suggested that I purchase the domains on godaddy (affiliate link), and then set up my blog through Word Press. I am wondering if Word Press will become a domain host for my website (using their blog function), or do I need both word press and something like godaddy/bluehost? I like the idea of using a one-stop service like blue host, but am concerned about costs potentially escalating.

Eric: You have recommended the Facebook Comments plugin previously; however  it doesn’t seem to integrate into my WordPress Dashboard to let me know when someone submits a comment – and I’d like it to. Do you know how to get that to work? 

An additional question is: You use Disqus instead of Facebook Comments. Why? What other comment plugins should I be aware of and which are the best, in your opinion to use. I’d like to build website traffic and make it easy to share comments – and I’m not sure how well Disqus or others do that.

Chad: My wife has recently finished writing a fiction novel. I’ve been looking at createspace after hearing you talk about it on a podcast. Do you have any experience with any other avenues of getting a novel published? Any advise is appreciated.

A few weeks ago I spent a day with Seth Godin and 14 of the most brilliant thinkers in the non-profit world on behalf of The Exodus Road. One of the results of that day caused me to write a post called, Seth Godin Made Me Cry. In this show I talk more about that day and what I learned.

Dallon: Whenever I do my Screenflow (affiliate link) recordings, I can never get the same level of clarity or definition on the recordings as I do on my screen. I’ve tried recordings on a laptop (old 13″ MBP – just bought the 13″ Air last week) and my 27″ iMac, so I think it’s an issue with Screenflow itself. I just haven’t seemed to find the right place to adjust my recording settings where I can record at least in 720p.

The easiest way is to set your recording area at 1280×720 since that’s the native resolution for 720p video. In Chrome, I use the Resolution Test extension to set a tab at 1280×720 and close it when I’m done.

David: I have helped about 20 people with their personal finances (but, only 5 or so have actually taken the steps to change). I enjoy coaching, but haven’t been able to get a paying client yet. I asked the last 2 couples to write a testimonial for my website and they gladly did. One of the people people asked me to speak about personal finances on a conference call with about 30 people on the line, and the feedback was great. I have also spoken about our story in front of our church.

I have read numerous books and now I feel the need to attend a live event next year. I work shift work, so I’m not sure if Free Agent Academy would be best for me (even though I am open to it, but don’t have the $7k lying around to pay for the whole class). I was debating between attending Dave Ramsey’s Counselor Training, Coaching with excellence, or even Speak it Forward.

Eventually I’d like to quit my job and work for myself. I am aware that it’s difficult to do that in the personal finance world, but helping people with their finances really does excite me. I have taken the disc profile and I’m a very high “c” along with some “s”. I have been blogging every day for a few months now and I enjoy it. I just want to have your opinion on the best use for my money.

Tom: Hey Justin, I notice that many people I follow on twitter send out an immediate response thanking me for following. Some also send out an offer…such as a free report, which then captures my email address. Do you know how to do this?

I don’t do this since it takes the human part out of twitter. There are several programs that help you set it up, but 99% of the responses I receive feel like spam. If I want to check out your free thingy, let me get to know you first. You don’t offer someone a free download as soon as you meet them at a party, do you? I hope not.

Keith: Some time ago, you mentioned you shouldn’t initially write your blogs on Microsoft Word because Word has stuff hidden in it & then when you copy & paste it into a post, you can have issues. Where did you say you could go to write your blogs where you won’t have these issues? I’m hoping to be making some changes soon so I won’t be so frustrated with where I post them & also have a more consistent look & feel to them.

I clarified with Keith to learn he is using Blogger. WordPress has a button that allows you to copy and paste from word. It then strips out all of the hidden HTML for you, giving you plain text, which is exactly what you want. You can write in a text editor or use a nifty program like Omm Writer, which works on the PC, Mac, and iPad.

Dave: My wife wants to create a program to teach disabled adults basic life skills, skills to get around in their community, and possibly even job/business skills so they can earn extra spending money. (Most are on disability and for those who are functional enough to hold down any type of basic employment, are limited in what they can earn). There are a number of these types of programs already, all of which are non-profits and get the majority of their funding from states. While she wants to do the same thing, she wants to find other sources of funding, and possibly find a way to monetize this not just for the disabled adults, but for herself as well. She isn’t sure if she should have this as a non-profit, a regular business, or even a combination of the two. Any ideas would be very much welcomed.

Paul: Do you have any experience with wordpress plugins for the Amazon Affiliate program? Only about 33% of my readers are from the US. Therefore, I’d like something that I can specify the recommended ISBN and that works properly with the Amazon Store for the reader’s locale. Thanks for a fine podcast and thanks in advance for any advice you have.

In Colorado, I’m not allowed to be a member of the Amazon program. I do use Commission Junction, e-Junkie, and Avant Link to manage multiple affiliate programs, but I don’t use any specific plugins.

Eric: Hi, Justin. I’m trying to get my coaching/consulting business started, helping small businesses work with the State of Florida. I have worked for the state for the past 8 years and definitely have insight to provide. I currently work for the state’s eProcurement system, where vendors register and get potential business opportunities. I know there is a little cross-over (or conflict) in these roles, but the state is not willing to fund this type of training. I want provide my knowledge about working with the state for free as bridge to get paying clients for marketing and process improvement. In your opinion, am I putting myself in a bad position because some of my day job roles I would be blogging about, but as myself and not as an employee of the state?

Be sure to run your ideas by your employer. In a government job, you might want to get their response in writing.

Brad: I want to create a website to accompany the financial class I’ve written. The site would include forums and allow people that have gone through the class to socialize. It would also be a way to obtain additional forms used in the class, maybe an FAQ, but mostly be a place to get more information. The site would be for present and past class participants.  I want a solution that is ready for me to use; I would just need to customize to fit my class. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for what I describe?

The best solution for ready-to-use is NING. If you want to assemble something, you could also take a look at plugins for WordPress.

Stefan Loble is my guest as Aaron McHugh and I interview him about his success on Kickstarter. Stefan set a goal to raise $13,500 and ended his crowd funding project at $128,722 to launch Bluffworks.

Bluffworks is launching a line of men’s pants that work great on the trail and look good in the office. Stefan touts them as being able to go a week without washing or ironing, perfect for jumping out of a trout stream and in to a client meeting.

A number of great insights are shared in this show, but my favorite is how Stefan believe so heavily in his product that he hired a branding and consulting firm months before putting the project together.

Ultimately, I want to build some of my own Videos on Demand that don’t conflict with other interests I have. These would be specifically targeted to the individuals reading a type of article. I’m currently at about 4700 unique visitors a month.

Dallon: How do you make a Google Voice number go straight to voice mail? I am getting about 25 downloads a show on my first three podcasts, and I want to start promoting feedback and iTunes reviews.

Randell: Hey Justin, several months ago I  asked for your recommendation for speech to text software. You recommended Dragon Naturally Speaking. I wanted to let you know that it’s amazing! Once you setup your initial profile, which takes less than an hour of reading some predetermined scripts, you are on your way. Dragon continues to get more accurate as you use it, because it continues to update your profile automatically.

Other than a video blog, my last 8 blog posts have been created completely using Dragon with very limited editing. I’ve also been using Dragon to write the manuscript for my book. For anyone who  is like me, and prefers talking over writing, I highly recommend it.

How many domain names do we have?

Steve: In one of your podcasts you comment that you use a Roland digital recorder for recording podcasts. However, the gentleman you podcast with is in Canada. Tell me how you record that.

This depends on your setup. Josh and I have different setups when we record and we talk through how we do it.

Dallon: For my market, would attending Write to the Bank be a good investment? I’m looking to write a book after Christmas and launch a couple of products and classes. I know the class will be great for my own book. I’m also looking at this as a great networking opportunity with people who are looking to escape their time for money trap. I see this as a market for people who can develop other recurring revenue models like membership sites, products, and workshops. I have enough money in the budget for one conference. I’m just debating whether WTTB or a FAA event will be a more effective investment of my time and money.

Chris: I’ve been in beverage manufacturing for the past five years and I made a quick exit. I’ve been doing copious amounts of research into an idea. It’s a social network for handymen and the not-so-handys to meet up. A vendor and consumer site, where people could post their services. Wait isn’t that Angie’s list?

John: I currently have a job which I’ve wanted to transition away from for some time. Within the past 4 months I’ve been waking up early and going to sleep late building an IT consulting business. I have run into a few limitations based on time and availability though. With the small clientele that I currently have, I’m noticing that it’s already getting difficult to coordinate and schedule appointments with my clients while working my current job. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to move forward with the given time constraints? I’ve tried to move to nights and weekends to assist my new clients but very rarely does it work for their schedules or they find it too odd that my availability is so limited. It seems like I need to quit my job and take a major financial hit in order to fully realize whether I can reach my consulting goals or not. I’ve heard you and Dan Miller comment on similar situations. The way it was talked about sounded as though it should be possible to juggle both until I can comfortably quit my job. I’m finding that this may not be the case. Am I doing something wrong?

Ryan: At the end of episode 233, you ask if we would share what risks we are taking. Here’s one for me right now:

I am taking the risk of hosting my first in-person speaking event that I will charge for. I was talking with a friend of mine a few weeks ago about my coaching services. He said that of the 300 or so hours of marital counseling he did in the past year, about 200 hours was discussions on finances. He agreed that a Friday-Saturday event would be good to host at the church building, and he would do word-of-mouth marketing and put out “feelers” to see what the demand is. We don’t have a date set yet, but I’m looking at conducting four sessions during the weekend early this fall. I’ll meet with him again a week to discuss it further. I will definitely record the event so I can re-purpose the content online. Thanks again for your encouraging show, Justin. 

Curt: Thanks for the podcast. Can you tell us a little more about what you outsource, who you outsource with and how you do it? I’ve outsourced graphic design work and things like internet research, but have never had a dedicated assistant. I would love to learn more about what has worked best for you.

Logistically I am just confused and don’t want clients feeling like I ripped them off.

Dustin: I’ve noticed that you have used several different URL shorteners. I’ve noticed a few such as bit.ly and owl.ly. Are those on purpose or does it really not matter that much? I know that owl.ly is part of hoot suite and you can do some awesome URL tracking with those, but I was wondering if it was just a matter of which application you were posting from that may have some presets for URL shortening or if you’re strategically tracking certain things with certain shorteners.

A few years ago Kimanzi Constable hated his job. It made him miserable and he didn’t know how to get out.

Kimanzi was an independent contractor as a delivery person. He says it’s awesome to be self-employed, but it grew to having five guys below him and $300,000 in revenue. He didn’t have a mentor so it was frustrating to figure out taxes and everything that comes with a business.

Kimanzi got fed up in 2011 and decided too take action, so he followed his passion and self-published an ebook. Tales of the Everyday Working Man and Woman has sold over 20,000 copies to date! This year Kimanazi landed a four book deal.

Tony: I am in the process of building out my office in the garage, and I want to simplify my computer life. I want to sell three computers that all serve different functions. The lowest price Mac is the Macbook Air. While it is more than enough for my technical specs, the small screen is a concern. I will be doing screen video tutorials and podcasting as well. Given your experience, and the fact that you own the Macbook Air, do you think you could do well with that laptop only? I know you have the Thunderbolt Display, but would that slow you down much if you didn’t have it? I would plan to add that later.

Are you going to BlogWorld?

Jason: I want to become a speaker, leader, helper, and coach, but I find myself looking at these goals in a few different areas. I need to figure how to make my ideas concise enough that I can be effective, however I am unable to find what one or two of these should go together or should I just find one and go all in? Am I able to be effective if I match up a few of the ideas together?

I feel like I lack the technological know how of where to begin and how to create my brand and start to make my presence known. Could you give me some advice and ideas?

Piotr: I want to create a website as a guide for people that want to visit Poland. I was born and lived there during the early years of my life.

My unique selling proposition will be to stay somewhere in the country. The visitors, instead of getting a room in one of the hotels, will stay on a farm or horse ranch, or other places with some kind of recreational offer. This will make the vacation even more worthwhile and more interesting than just sightseeing.

I’m currently writing about the most popular places to visit. This is what most of the sites have. After that I don’t know if I should add more content with other less popular places or I should start a blog talking about the life in the country. About the benefits, disadvantages, comparing and showing the differences in lifestyle in the country verses the big city.

Justin: I provide veterinary surgical procedures for veterinary clinics that are unable to provide these types of surgeries for their clients. I perform surgeries they normally have to refer out to specialty hospitals for lack of skills, equipment or the willingness to do them.

The benefit for the veterinary practice using our services are two fold:

1. Value added service for their clients
2. Additional revenue source they didn’t previously have available to them

The business has done very well since its inception 3 years ago with the aide of my business coach. One problem I face is keeping the clients on board longterm. Most veterinary clinics who begin using our services are very excited initially and use us a lot. With any surgery performed there is always risk for complications or failures. Occasionally we run into a postop complication that causes the clinic to shy away from using our services. We tackle these complications head on but despite doing so, the occasional clinic becomes gun shy and will turn to referring those cases out for surgery. 

Thoughts on how to address this issue a little better to insure continued working relationships?

Jean: Do you know what kind of forums I could visit / participate in where people would be looking to have websites made? I have tried a few marketing ones but didn’t feel that they were worth continuing to pursue.

Joseph: I recently joined a national academic life coaching program and recently completed the training. As I explored the approach I wanted to take to gaining clients, I found that I love online social networking as a means to reach the greatest audience. In three months I have created two Twitter accounts, a Facebook page, a Pinterest business profile, a Youtube Channel, and my blog. It feels productive yet it is starting to feel like I am missing a crucial piece.

I am not converting many people into dedicated followers, and have zero coaching clients. I am nearly at a loss about what to do next because while it’s all over the news about changing the education paradigm, there has not been much inquiry into what I have to offer in that respect. Also, I have always wanted to write about empowering others but I am struggling to find a consistent voice….especially one that really clicks with an online audience.

This week I am nearly feeling frozen with ideas for next steps to improve the online presence. All of the advice and options as far as writing and marketing have my head spinning. And, what I’ve done thus far feels so scattered. I could definitely use some coaching of my own!

Steve: My biggest problem is coming up with the actual idea for my business. When I joined FAA, my thought was to help worship bands develop techniques for playing as a band. Many worship bands know their band does not sound like a “band,” but don’t know how to get beyond it (or perhaps even have a desire to).

I made a start at a web site just to have a place to work at writing. When it came to the place that my posts were more thoughts and not things I could see as being helpful to others, I put the writing on hold. I now have several posts in the beginning stages (using Need a Topic” ideas), with great pictures, but still find myself struggling with the “how-to” writing of useful information.

I feel like I’m stuck in the phase of constantly needing to know more, get new content (of my own) and don’t know how to move forward with the getting on to making a business of it.

I think the bottom line for me, at the moment anyway, is: Is there something I can and should be doing right now to actually be starting my business, even while I am working through classes and trying to decide what “it” will be? (Because, I feel like that whole process could take a long time…) Thanks for all your help!

Scott: OK Justin, you know me really well. And, you’re also a customer! People who’ve seen my apps love them. When I can get them to leave a review in iTunes, they use phrases like “great”, “awesome”, “wonderful”, “elegantly designed,” “delightful”, “really useful”, etc. My brick wall is this: I cannot get the word out. And my reason is this: I dread (and perhaps even despise) the process of getting the word out. If I had the proverbial $5 million in the bank and could do what I wanted to do all day, I would be creating the apps and throwing them OVER the brick wall to somebody else to go and market them for me. I have ZERO interest in the marketing research and selling aspects of the business, and try as I might, I can’t get myself truly interested or motivated to do so. I know the mantra that you must be able to sell, and I can give mental assent to it, but I just can’t make it happen. I get drained just thinking about it.

How to get powerful testimonials.

Erik: For the past 15 years, I have been coaching on-air radio talent to improve their content. I am now launching a business to coach podcast talent with their content and material. There are so many moving parts to creating an online community, I’m not really sure which to tackle first.

Michael: If you have time, I would like to know who I might go about SAFELY allow others to guest blog at my site. I think it is a good idea, but don’t know what precautions I would need to take to allow them access.

Jon White: Justin/Josh I work with individuals and couples on improving their personal economy by giving them a new a perspective on their money. After blogging and podcasting for almost two years, I have created a lot of content but have not been able to build the community or gotten as many clients as I would have liked. In the past few months I have been questioning why I am continuing to do what I have been doing when it really has not worked out too well. I want to create content and products that will help people change their lives and allow them to live the life they want to, but I am having trouble determining what my target market wants and how to market it to them. Thanks for doing this and I am looking to the upcoming podcast. Should be a fun one!

Brian: I’ve owned and operated a music facility for the past 15 years. We make recordings, teach private music lessons, offer instrument repairs, and run clinics and workshops. I have about 3 teachers that work at the studio and I am trying to increase my student enrollment, but to no avail. I’ve been posting in social media sites, doing business to business advertising, running some advertising and of course, word of mouth. I want to take my business to the next level, but I feel like I’m stuck. Any advice would help. Thanks!

Getting your message across by spamming is not the way to go. I’ve seen a lot of this as I’ve sat on the advisory board of 48days. I talk about it in this show and what to do instead.

Once I do that, I would post a link to it on my Facebook business page which would automatically post it on Twitter & LinkedIn. Should I stop all of that and start some kind of newsletter so that the people who like to read it can still get it and all the others who don’t want it, won’t? Thanks again! I’ve seen a lot of people asking the viability of certain skills like graphic or website design lately. It’s not about the particular skills but rather, in how you market them.

It’s important to do things outside the realm of your business, whether you’re just starting or have been doing it a while. I spent three days learning about avalanches and ski touring the backcountry of northern Colorado. I came back with a list of ideas and blog posts.

Jessica: I listen to Coach Radio in the car to and from my full-time job as I aspire to start my own business. I loved hearing you use Evernote to write down blog ideas, as I use a similar app (Note Everything) to record, type, or draw ideas when necessary.

I haven’t touched my blog in a year, but I’m in the wee young days of starting an online business. Your podcasts have proved to be motivating and informative. Thank you for that!

Keith: I want to use Google+ more. I thought it would be a good idea to post links to past blogs fairly often until I’m caught up to date. I feel like by doing that, I might be ramming my blog down people’s throats. What do you think?

Mike: Hi Justin. I need to get some stuff printed for a class participant workbook. I would need something similar to your Past Due binders. So, I would actually need the binders, the cover printed in color, the spine printed in color, and the content for the middle printed in black and white. Do you have a suggestion on who to use? Zak Normandin started an organic baby food company a few years back and grew to $300,000 in revenue in 2011. Little Duck Organics is now on track for $2,500,000 in sales for 2012.

In 2009, Zak started with an idea and launched the business in 2010. He pursued funding and received an investment in June, 2011. shortly after he hired an amazing team to take the company to where it is now.

Zak’s background is in the Coast Guard. When he got out, he worked for an avionics company while also honing his design skills. He started a design consulting firm which lead him to design food packaging.

Last week I had the pleasure of launching a video for, Story Company, a startup I’ve been working with for the past few months. While it didn’t get millions of views in the first few hours, it did spread rapidly to many people I’ve not met or even heard of.

The amazing thing was that we launched the video at 11pm ET, when few people are online.

• Storyline - The catalyst for my family’s move to Colorado
• Speak it Forward – I’ve had the pleasure to speak at many of Kent’s Boot Camps for speakers and I always leave with great info (affiliate link)
• SXSW - I haven’t been, but if you can’t find something cool here, you shouldn’t go to conferences

Sam: I’ve been blogging for six weeks but haven’t been able to find traction yet. I’m not getting much traffic, comments, or subscribers. What am I doing wrong?

Don’t write off blogging and connecting with people until you’ve been hard at it (almost a full time job) for at least six months. Create great content. If you need good blog ideas, join Need a Topic.

Don’t just write to write, instead, create remarkable content that people want to share. We spent about 25 hours creating the Story Company video. That could be one blog post. I prefer fewer quality posts than more average posts.

Share your posts socially, but before you spam people, build relationships on those networks. Comment on author’s posts if you want them to do the same and share your stuff. Be careful with asking people to share your content, but do be sure you are asking every so often.

Ted: My wife was on board with my business ideas 12 months ago, but I’m not getting as much support any more. Any ideas to keep her engaged and supporting me?

One word, Ted: results. You need to show her results or she has little reason to buy into your plans an support you, especially if you’ve been after it for 12 months or more. Also, help her dream. Show her what your future looks like with your business doing well.

Brenda: Justin, what was your backup plan when you started your business? What were you going to do if it failed?

I had no plan B, Brenda. My only choice was to make my business work, which may have lent to the results.
