Coachella Artist: Sparklehorse

It is amazing that Mark Linkous, the primary member of Sparklehorse, is still alive. After his first album was released in 1996, Linkouse overdosed on alcohol and various other drugs while on tour. He passed out with his weight on top of his legs for fourteen hours creating a potassium buildup that caused his heart to stop upon being lifted from his position. Linkous surprisingly recovered from this incident without losing his legs and proceeded on to record three more albums, the most recent of which is the beautifully surreal Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain.

Linkous plays just about if not all the instruments on his albums, but often times collaborates with guest artists like PJ Harvery, Danger Mouse, Tom Waits and others. He recorded the Pink Floyd song "Wish You Were Here" with Thom Yorke on vocals for the movie Lords of Dogtown in 2005. Mika is a classically trained Opera singer born in lebanon and now using his Freddie Mercury like voice to create some really catchy pop rock songs. Mika's family moved him from Lebanon when he waas 9 years old to escape the war torn country. In London, he atttended music school and was trained by a russian opera singer. He has performed as an opera singer at such places like the Royal Opera House.

Later on in his schooling, Mika dropped out to record his first album released this year Life in Cartoon Motion, an eccentric pop album rooted in 70's disco and classic rock. Unabashedly commercial, Mika is not afraid of the cliche pop-hook and pulls it off with a unique swing.

Teddybears are another group coming out of the Swedish music machine whose name was a little misleading at first since it is a rebellion against usual hardcore names like "Corpse Grinder" or "Blood Fued". The band consists of Patrik Arve (Vocals,Lead Guitar), Joakim Åhlund (Drums) and Klas Åhlund (Guitar) who began by making grindcore music under the name Skull and then evolved into the more electronic dance sound of the Teddybears. Lead guitarists Ahlund is also the guitarist for the Caesars. Songs off of their first album that was released in America Soft Machine have been circulating frequently through television, radio and other high profile media outlets. Their incredibly catchy dance beats, bass punches, guest vocalists and Teddybear costumes are what have made this group incredibly popular in the indie world.
