It comes running MotoBlur, which slows the phone down substantially. I ended up with this phone because I did not do much research before ordering it from T-Mobile, and because it was free. Now I am stuck in a two year contract with a phone that I am less that pleased with. So rooting this phone to make it better was my only real option (yeah, I could go buy another phone at full price, but I don't want to drop that kind of cash on a phone).<br /> <br /> Once rooting was possible for this phone it took some time before any roms were available, but now there is. I tried the method that works for one version of the phone - the Quench. Some times I think I am so close, and other days it seems like it will never happen. My latest attempts have been to find scripts and executables that the system is likely to execute as the privileged user and insert a call to telnetd or fire off a shell somewhere.</p><br /><p>The thing that makes me want it even more is the delay in the update to the firmware that was expected by the end of June. Android 2.1, according to Motorola's previous projections, was supposed to hit the Cliq and the Cliq XT in Q2 (April, May, or June). They announced that it wasn't going to happen -- I think on June 30. I could really care less about all of the features of 2.1, but I do care that it is at least 1.6. There are a number of applications that I would like to use that require &gt;=1.6.</p><br /><p>Having root would just be bonus. I'd like to use WiFi tethering and make a few minor adjustments. I thought it was stupid, but finally realized why they are so bothered. My thought is this: people are most connected to their most recently attended academic institution. In some places people have the logo, or initials of their alma mater, well here, it seems, the tradition is a little different. Many people have the name of their high school on the back of their cars.</p><br /><p>There are months (read several) that go by that I don't think of any of the high schools I attended. Just consider the simplicity of Google.com. Word is it will be running Linux and will probably be tethered to <a href="http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/googlephone/index.html">Sprint and T-mobile</a> (or, maybe <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/31/google-getting-cozy-with-verizon-and-sprint-for-the-gphone">Sprint and Verizon</a>. But, I hope something really cool happens with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/20/its-on-fcc-sets-700mhz-spectrum-auction-for-january-16-2008/">700 MHz spectrum</a>. With the online suite of goodies that Google has (<a href="http://mail.google.com/">Gmail</a>, <a href="http://docs.google.com/">Documents</a>, <a href="http://maps.google.com/">Maps</a>, <a href="http://www.google.com/">Calendar</a>, <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/">Photos</a>, and <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/">more</a>) they, I suspect, plan to deliver the goods with a high-speed wireless broadband pipe and not sweat the storage on the phone. I'm really digging it. As far as looks go, and some of the neat features go Apple did well. Stacks is pretty cool, Spaces, and Time Machine are too. The feature I like the most is the updated Mail.app. It is as fast as they say it is. I really like the RSS feeds though. Having access to news feeds offline, and automatic is pretty cool.
