No matter what your plans are for Mother’s Day, you can never go wrong with a cocktail created for this very special day. If you prefer, you could start with a memorable treat: Breakfast in Bed. Next to the plate of perfectly browned French toast, offer her something celebratory – a glass of bubbly, something flowery or even fruity.

If breakfast is not the time for your celebration, no worries. These light cocktails are perfect for sipping outside in the shade on a sunny afternoon as well.

Here are three simple recipes for Mom’s special day:

Champagne Dreams
Jazz up a boring, ordinary Mimosa by adding other fruit liqueurs to make it even more delectable.

2 oz. PAMA Liqueur
2 oz. Champagne
¼ oz. orange liqueur
1 oz. fresh orange juice

Combine all ingredients except champagne in a shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled flute and top with champagne.

Tulipe de Lis
This floral cocktail is a perfect complement to a vase of flowers on the breakfast or lunch tray.

2 oz. Denizen Rum
¾ oz. St Germain Elderflower Liqueur
¾ oz. fresh lime juice
½ tsp. granulated sugar

Place sugar and lime juice in a shaker and stir to dissolve sugar. Add remaining ingredients with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a wedge of lime. For an added touch, garnish with a tulip petal.

Fruit Cobbler
Welcome the warmer weather with this sparkling, fruity tipple perfect for a lazy afternoon.

1 oz. PAMA Liqueur
1 oz. Blueberry Vodka
1 oz. Lemon Juice
½ oz. Simple Syrup
Club Soda
Garnish: Blueberry, Kiwi and Strawberry Spear

Combine all ingredients except club soda in a shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a highball glass, fill glass with ice and top with soda. Garnish with a kiwi, strawberry and blueberry spear.

May is the best month of the year, at least when it comes to festivals and events. The kids will soon be out of school, many students are doing finals and for most of us, May tends to be a really busy month.  The weather is right now nice and warm, many of us love to head to the beach on the weekend. But if the beach is not what you are looking for, there is a whole bunch of events going on in Jacksonville this month. Here are a few suggestions.

Visiting French Navy Schooners during French Week
April 30 – May 2
Jacksonville is celebrating 450 years of Ribauld and the French influence on the city this month with a special French week. There are lot of history and learning type events and happenings, performance of Les Miserables, special french menus and much more. But what my eye was the two French schooners that are scheduled to visit downtown Jacksonville during the French Week celebration. You can board the ship for a tour, and it is free. This is without doubt the biggest event of the year for Fernandina Beach, Fl. The festival kicks off already on Thursday with a parade complete with pirates and cannons. Then on Friday night it’s time for the pirate invasion, followed by the big festival itself on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday there’s also a blessing of the fleet. Plantasia 2012 – Charleston, SC
The Horticulture Society of Charleston holds Plantasia Friday, April 13, 11am -5pm. and Saturday, April 14, 8am – 2pm. at Wragg Square, 342 Meeting Street, in front of Second Presbyterian Church. Horticulturally-trained garden docents and volunteers will be available to help with plant selection and answer questions. Art & Craft Show – Hilton Head Island, SC

The Art Market at Historic Honey Horn, a juried fine art and craft show, is set for April 28 and 29, 2012 on Hilton Head Island. The Coastal Discovery Museum will jury in artists in media that includes: clay, wood, fibers, metals, glass, jewelry, watercolors, oil, mixed media and photography. All work will be on display and for sale.
This event host artists from 13 states annually and well-known local artists share the spotlight during this weekend-long event, as they compete for prizes.
The show is open to the public on Saturday, from 10 am until 5 pm and on Sunday, from 11 am until 4 pm. There is a $6.00 per car parking donation, while admission to the show is free. Demonstrations throughout the weekend will be held in glass, pine needle basketry, clay and much more. Food and beverage are for sale during the event. . Show admission is free, parking is $6 per vehicle.

The beautiful Camellias are blooming in the middle of winter at Middleton Place in Charleston, SC. The camellias enhance the Middleton Place Gardens with thousands of blossoms, from white to all shades of red and pink. The Camellia is a southern landscape favorite, and it show off an amazing variety of color throughout the winter months. It is said that the French botanist Andrè Michaux gave the Middletons some of the first camellias to be planted in an American garden. Some 50 years later, in 1838, a Middleton daughter wrote, “Papa called me to the terrace to admire the Camellias which I found in great beauty both the white and variegated…”

Now, the gardens at Middleton Place has over 3,500 camellias including many rare varieties as well as one of the four original Michaux plants, fondly referred to as the “Reine des Fleurs” or “Queen of Flowers”, and during this time Middleton Place offers special Camellia Walks to learn more about the fascinating plant. 

Enjoy the beauty of the blooming camellias while learning more about its history during a Camellia Walk. These tours are held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday beginning February 11th and continuing through March 24th, 2012. The special guided tours will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Garden Market & Nursery and last approximately an hour and a half.

There is no additional fee for the Camellia Walks but reservations are required. Adult admission is $25, students are $15, children (6-13) are $10 and 5 years old and under are free. For reservations and additional information, call (843) 556-6020 or visit www.middletonplace.org.

The camellia will also be the topic of a Free Seminar to be held at the Middleton Place Garden Market and Nursery on Saturday, February 18th at 1:00 pm. On February 2, the famous groundhog   Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob – in front of thousands of followers from all over the world – to predict the weather for the rest of winter.

According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

When the groundhog emerges from his burrow on February 2, he speaks to the Groundhog Club president in “Groundhogese”(a language only understood by the current president of the Inner Circle). His proclamation is then translated for the world.

The celebration of Groundhog Day began with Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers, and now you can watch it all happen live on February 2 via the webcast directly from Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania.

Gallery Row on Historic Broad Street is gearing up again this year to present “Blues on Broad” on February 3rd from 5 -8PM, with music starting between 5 and 6 pm. During this First Friday on Broad artwalk, join us on Gallery Row for a gumbo of live music & fine art. Galleries will be filled with a mélange of roots music (Blues, Soul, Jazz and Rock n Roll) and artwork inspired from all of these genres.
Hamlet Fine Art Gallery will feature South Carolina blues artist Shrimp City Slim (aka Gary Erwin) (piano/vocals). Erwin was originally from Chicago but has lived in Charleston since the 1980s. He is known as the originator of “Lowcountry blues & original songs”, has released seven CDs to date, and is the producer of the celebrated Lowcountry Blues Bash (festival), which will have its 22nd edition this February 8-21. His various locally-themed tunes such as “Gone With the Wind”, “Phosphate Woman”, “Lowcountry Mama”, “Charleston Strut”, and others have entered into Charleston music history. Expect lowdown blues, crisp coastal shuffles, and plenty of exuberance from this well-known South Carolina blues artist.

Edward Dare Gallery will feature Blues inspired works in oil by Jim Darlington and photography by Ron Rocz while visitors are entertained by the guitar duo, Ace and the Sultan. Figures have long been one of the favorite subjects of Darlington, and his blues series continues to be a source of enjoyment for collectors of his work. Stop in to see the musical side of Darlington as he and Minimum Wage band member Brandt Saunders entertain us as the duo, Ace and the Sultan, with their interpretation of blues favorites and other soul shaking, foot tapping musical renditions. This music is the perfect ambiance for Rocz’s Mississippi Delta Blues Collection. These sepia-toned photographs convey a sense of what life was like in the early days of the blues, surrounded by cotton plantation life and work. As he often tells his viewers, “if weren’t for the cotton, there would have been no blues.” His photographs include old share cropper cabins, cotton gins, rural churches, juke joints, get-a-way railways, and local blues players. Rocz’s blues photography collection has been well received at art shows in major cities across the nation.
COCO VIVO Fine Art & Interior Design will present musical guest Tim Church III as a pre-event to Charleston’s 22nd Annual Low Country Blues Bash. COCO VIVO will also host Charleston fashion clothes designer Alena Fede and her new spring collection, Spring Flowers by Alena Fede; the artwork of one of America’s finest designers of natural pearl and hammered silver jewelry, artist Christine Peters Hamilton of Maine; and sculptor Kevin McLean introduces new bronze sculpture, blending classical processes and techniques with a raw and expressive style.

The Ellis-Nicholson Gallery entertainment will be provided by the homegrown Charleston talent of young singer/songwriter Irene Rose. Her music is a soundtrack of the south as she wistfully sings about family, small towns, sweet tea, grits and God. “I like to sing the songs that make people smile and nod because they know exactly what I’m talking about.” Irene Rose and her sister Lydia went on a music tour to Nashville where she was invited to sing in multiple honky tonks on Broadway. She has celebrated two album releases, “Irene Rose” and “How it Ought to Be”. In January Irene Rose was chosen to be played over 30 radio stations in South Carolina in the Discover and Uncover New Artists Series sponsored by IheartRadio.

The Ella Walton Richardson Gallery will feature their newest Dutch paintings. Contemporary artists highlighted include Simon Balyon, Johannes Eerdmans, Frits Goosen, Rene Jansen, Niek van der Plas, and Frans van der Wal. The variety of subjects include still life works, architectural scenes of Charleston, and Dutch landscapes.

Mary Martin Gallery will feature musical guest Don Olson who will perform Appalachian songs on Viola for the evening at their new beautiful location at 103 Broad Street. Spencer Fine ArtI, II and now III (!) will also have entertainment and a wonderful variety of soulful art for art lovers and collectors.

Mardi Gras traditionally takes place before the fasting season of Lent, its origins go all the way back to the ancient Rome. Many cities continue the tradition today, for example Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana, and maybe the most famous celebration of them all takes place in Rio de Janeiro.

But did you know that here on the coast of Georgia, we actually have two festivals of our own.  St. Marys Mardi Gras Festival has a long tradition, in 2012 it will be;the 18th year for the family friendly Mardi Gras festival.  Tybee Island is slightly behind in years anyway – but the Tybee Island Mardi Gras Festival makes up for that with lots of activities, events and participants. 

Mardi Gras St Marys
The Annual Mardi Gras Festival and Parade will showcase festive floats and costumes. This is one of the most popular annual festivals in St Marys. Everyone comes downtown to view the Mardi Gras parade and catch beads.

A 10 a.m. parade will kick off the festival and the parade is followed by an action-packed day of entertainment, arts and crafts, and amusements. This year there is also a Chili Cook Off and a Pet Costume Contest. The, when the sun goes down , adults can continue to the Mardi Gras Ball.  A new King and Queen are chosen and prizes are awarded for best costumes. 

Tickets for the ball are available at the St. Marys Welcome Center and Once Upon a Bookseller in Downtown St. Marys. Beads are also available at the bookstore on days leading up to the festival. For more information, call 912-882-7350 or 912-552-0072.

Mardi Gras Tybee
Tybee Island is celebrating Mardi Gras for the second time this year.
Purple, gold and green flags will dress up Tybee Island for the party. Mardi Gras Tybee kicks off with a  Masquerade Ball on Friday, February 12th at 8pm, hosted by Fannies on the Beach. Tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 at the door.

On Saturday February 13th, there will be a Mardi Gras parade at 3pm down Butler Avenue and a street party with music and festivities on Tybrisa Street. Join the fun, listen to authentic Zydeco music featuring Brad Randell and the Zydeco Ballers, All American All Star Dixieland Review and Jeff Beasley Band. The music starts already at noon. Admission to the street party and parade viewing is free.

This year it will be the 11th year for the Amelia Island Book Festival – and in 2012 the festival has an impressive line up of guest authors. Best selling author STEVE BERRY  is again participating. He is a big supporter of the Amelia Island Book Festival. Also participating this year is David Morrell. DAVID MORRELL, is also a New York Times best selling author of more than 30 books, the creator of Rambo, and a noted writing teacher and mentor.

The festival has a Writer’s Workshop, a luncheon which this year will feature Paula McLain, known for her best selling novel Paris Wife.

The Reader’s festival on Saturday, February 18, 2012, from 9 am – 4.30 pm, is free and open to the public. It’s a great opportunity for those who want to write, or if you just enjoy books and reading. Everyone is invited to come and hang out.

There is now better place to celebrate the holiday season than St. Augustine, Florida. The holiday decorated Old City makes it easy to get into the Christmas spirit and make holiday shopping a pleasure. The winter weather is usually very mild, and the old city puts on a great holiday celebration with the Night of Lights festivities, a Winter Wonderland, a Christmas Parade, Regatta and much more.

During the nearly 250 years when St. Augustine served as the capital of Spanish La Florida, the residents marked the holiday season with a single white candle burning in a window at each home. Today, the Nights of Lights continues that happy tradition in a grand style that reflects the city’s 446 years of history

The iconic Bridge of Lions will once again provide an incredible display of lights. For the past five years, the bridge has been dark during the Nights of Lights due to a complete renovation and re-construction. This year, the bridge and the two new parks will be a welcomed addition to the holiday season. Together they will add tens of thousands of lights to the spectacular lighting display in St Augustine.

Nov. 19, 2011 

Past Mayors of the city of St. Augustine meet in the historic Plaza de la Constitucion to “flip the switch” to light up the Nights of Lights celebration on Nov 19, 2011. The festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. with spirited holiday performances in the Plaza’s Gazebo. Then at 6:30 p.m., all attending this festive event will be asked to participate in the countdown to the lighting.

MAYOR’S HOLIDAY LIGHTING GALA
Nov. 19, 2011

You can be a part of St. Augustine Mayor Holiday Lighting Gala. The fun begins with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Government House at 5:30pm. At 6:30 p.m., from the King’s Balcony, the Mayor will welcome the crowds in the Plaza de la Constitucion, for the Nights of Lights Lighting Ceremony. Following the Lighting Ceremony, the Mayor and Gala participants will be led by a 1740 Color Guard to the Courtyard of the historic Lightner Museum, located at 78 King Street, for dinner catered by Casa Monica Hotel, dancing to the music of The Committee and a silent auction. HISTORIC WEAPON FIRING DEMONSTRATIONS AT CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS

Have a blast at St. Augustine’s Castillo de San Marcos when authentically-clad re-enactors demonstrate how Spain’s famed artillerymen fired their cannons in the 1740′s. The cannons will roar at 10:30 & 11:30 a.m., 1:30, 2:30 & 3:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 11:00 a.m., 1:30, 2:30, & 3:30 p.m. on Sundays. Firing times are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Admission is $6; free for children under 16.

SUNSET/MOONRISE TOUR

Get the best view of St. Augustine from the top of the lighthouse and enjoy viewing the sunset and moonrise from the most unique perspective in all of St. Augustine! This special event includes a champagne toast, provided by San Sebastian Winery, atop the tower and an informative overview of the history of the St. Augustine Light Station. 44TH ANNUAL FALL ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL

See art created from lace to limestone and crayons to crystal. Enjoy unplugged entertainment, plein air artists at work, and the Kids Art Zone. One of the region’s most prestigious juried art festivals, it takes place at Francis Field behind the St. Augustine Downtown Historic Parking Facility located on West Castillo Drive in St. Augustine. WINTER WONDERLAND

Winter Wonderland comes with lots of activities for both young and old. This is the only place where you can experience snow and ice. Gallery Row is pleased to present two major events this October. The annual “Autumn Hues” show with opening receptions during The First Friday Art Walk and the French Quarter Gallery Association Fall Art Walk will take place on October 7, 2011. 

On the following evening, Saturday October 8, 2011,  from 6-8 pm, Gallery Row will host the annual event “Taste of the Arts on Gallery Row” produced by the Charleston Restaurant Association as part of the “Southern Living ® Taste of Charleston”. A spectacular selection of major new work by such important artists as Douglas Grier, Jean-Claude Gaugy, Albert Handell, Catherine Spencer, Hai Ou Hou, George Speck, Stephanie Schuler Hamlet, Victoria Platt Ellis, Bernie Horton and many more will be showcased at various galleries on Gallery Row.

Artists’ receptions are scheduled for Friday, October 7th from 5 pm to 7 pm, where collectors will have a chance to meet many of the participating artists. Additional artists will be on hand for demonstrations during the Taste of the Arts event on Saturday.

Autumn is the time of year when fine art seems to capture the imagination of Charleston, with no limit to the exceptional quality and diverse nature of subjects and genres being featured in the galleries. There are a great number of collectors, editors, museum curators and fine art enthusiasts in town for the festivities.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Coastal Companion has become an authority website when it comes to things to do in the coastal area. 

HOW TO BECOME A VENDOR

Many of the emails and phone calls we receive are about how to become a vendor at an event. We get a lot of questions about who to call, where to go, and how to sign up to sell at festivals and events. This is why we decided that it was time to do something about it.

We are launching a new page on our website  for those of you who are vendors or are looking to sell at festivals. You can find out under “About” on the navigation bar. It is called “selling at festivals“. 

On the page you will find the sign up form on the page. Sign up on our email list if you are interested in getting information about selling at festivals. We will start to send out a special newsletter to those of you who want to be vendors with information about upcoming events. This is going to be a great tool for you to find out about who is looking for vendors on the coast.
