For seventeen weeks we’ve cried and cheered, high-fived and hung our heads as we supported our teams in the NFL. The playoffs couldn’t diminish out team spirit, but now we have only two teams to root for.

Fernet Branca is a famous Italian bitter, the founding spirit of the Fratelli Branca Distillerie and brain child of Bernardino Branca circa 1845. Its flavor is bold and overwhelming, but it is best known for its restorative qualities.

It can be sipped as a digestif after a rather heavy meal or in the morning after excess and indulgence to lessen your pain. And if you’ve ever tasted this bitter, aromatic spirit you would agree that it is a bit like a hair of the dog that bit you.

In San Francisco it has been enjoyed with a chaser of ginger beer since before prohibition, and in Argentina they mix it with coca-cola. Celebrated chef Fergus Henderson, of the St. John restaurant in London, created a drink known as both “Dr. Henderson” and “The Miracle” as a hangover cure.

Winter is a cocktail aficionado’s favorite time of year. The cold of the season causes us to reach for the warmth in each other. And when we gather there is the cocktail.

One favorite tradition is the hanging of the mistletoe, providing the opportunity to come closer to the people we love with either a sweet peck on the cheek – or something more.

Miss Cocktail is headed out to sea on the Nickelodeon at Sea free-style cruise along the Western Mediterranean with Norwegian Cruise Lines.

This is a complete guilty pleasure cruise for me. And I am taking someone special. But I am worried that I’ll get shipwrecked with jetlag or seasickness, yikes!

Wouldn’t that completely ruin my reputation as a party expert?

But a little research had me feeling good almost immediately. Yeah, I know the trick to avoiding both problems is drinking water, water, water. And keeping to an eating schedule is important too.

But I’ll be in Europe, and it’ll be easier to stay up late – coming from the US. Late nights, party, party!

Here is my plan, and I think it will work.

During the day I will keep to the water. I will even give up my morning coffee, in favor of my evening misdeeds. I can be such a good girl. Sometimes.

I will save the nights for cocktails with absinthe, ginger and bitters. They are supposed to be effective stomach settlers. And if consumed in moderation will allow me to have fun, but still manage my jetlag and seasickness. I hope.

So it will be Sweet Manhattans, Death in the Afternoon and Dark and Stormies for me.
And a toast to Squidward Q. Tentacles, of course. He’s my favorite Nickelodeon character.
