Coconut Wired Underground Testing

Let me try to explain what is going on with Coconut Wired. First off it's not dead just going through some changes. I am trying to find a way to incorporate live video into future episodes as well as make then more spontaneous, interactive and fun for the listener. Also, I am trying to cut down on the amount of time I spend in pre and post production. It takes me days to put the episodes together, contact the artists and bands, adjust and create art and other content, update the my various blogs and forums etc etc. It is a labor of love however, I simply don't have the time to do it now that I am working a full time job and still trying to get settled after my move.

I was using <a href="http://ustream.tv" target+"_blank">Utream as a streaming video option, but found Stickam to be a much more friendlier and stylish site with lots of really cool features (when they are working.) Stickam has mad potential but there are still bugs a-plenty but I am sure they will go away as the technology improves. Also, streaming video is a CPU gobbler add to it the fact that I am using four other memory hoggin' apps to put the stream together and you got a recipe for a crashed computer. I got through an entire hour of recorded video only to wipe out when I tried to save it.

The episodes are not downloadable at this point, but recorded episodes can be viewed at your leisure on the stickam site or here after I embed the recorded show. There is also an RSS feed at Stickam so you can subscribe and be alerted when new content is added. The downside is itunes will no longer be usable and you can not put episodes on your ipod as far as I know.

I have high hopes for this exciting new medium and very excited about this stuff but there are still hurdles to overcome and the aforementioned bugs to squash. I will keep messin' around with it because I am a glutton for punishment and I love the smell of my computer melting. So go over to Stickam.com and register if you are interested (it's free) and be a part of the future of Coconut Wired. I will be broadcasting sporadically over the next few weeks as the coconut wired crew tests new things and experiment with some of the features. I hope to start doing recorded shows as soon as I get a couple more things figured out.

I am still looking for bands and artists and now video. If things iron out I will should be able to make Coconut Wired much more entertaining, consistent and longer.

Adventure #13 Get Your Motor Runnin'
Tiki carvings and photos complements of Tiki Ray. Tiki Ray was first introduced to tiki's at the age of 5 . His Dad had brought him an "Aku Aku" coin and necklace from Vegas . For all of Tiki Ray's life he has loved to create draw , weld , shape and carve. 12 years ago, it rained 3 days solid and Ray was bored and had a large hunk of wood and a cheap electric chainsaw. He carved his first tiki to look like Greg Brady's "Taboo" necklace. He then started carving tiki's for the yard because the ones I saw available were either production tiki's or had little creativity or quality. They were far from authentic looking. Friends wanted me to make some for them and the next thing I knew, I was in demand. I was then contacted by Jim Hynde, The Rose Parade floral designer, to carve 17 tiki's for "Treasures of Polynesia ". A huge room display of exotic plants, birds, and Tiki Ray's tikis. Tiki Ray's tallest tiki is 14' high and still is rooted in the ground and standing. Tiki Ray's greatest joy is hearing from the people who appreciate the work it takes to create one. You can see more of Tiki Ray's work at Tikiray.com

Get Your Motor Runnin'
The signal is back after several weeks of being underground. The lil Coconesian has been guiding us through the labyrinth of damp and dark caves as we slowly make our way back to the outside world. The MIG is in hot pursuit so the trained monkeys have been cover our tracks by blowing up the tunnels behinds us and leaving an occasional banana peels on the path.
During and advanced scouting mission, Monkeypod and the lil Coconesian discovered a way out of the caverns by way of a secret tunnel hidden behind a magnificent waterfall. They also uncovered a giant cache of military vehicles, weapons ammo, food and Haw flakes. This discovery has made possible a plan to get the Coconut Wired crew safely off this Island and back on board the Liki Tiki. However, it will be a dangerous mission for Myself and the Podacaster so keep your fingers crossed!

Adventure #12 Not Over Till It's Over
Tiki Art complements of Dawn "Sophista-tiki" Frasier. Dawn's first tiki paintings were exhibited in Seattle in 1989. The following year began her travels in the Pacific, while in Fiji ancient god of enlightenment told her to pursue the study of Oceanic art. Dawn was so inspired but tapa cloth that she produced a book titled TAPA DESIGNS OF THE PACIFIC (unpublished). Tapa designs morphed into tiki designs and the concept of Sophista-Tiki began to shine. Over the years Dawns work has appeared in several publications including Wahine magazine, Tiki News, and Taboo - The Art of Tiki. Her paintings and wood tikis can bee seen at Luau Restaurant in Seattle. Dawn applies her blend of mid-century modern and traditional Oceania to everything around her. Jahmbi, her vintage art car has graced the cover of PC Magazine and been part of a traveling Smithsonian show of American Folk Art Two of Dawns homes have been featured on the Home and Garden Channel. These days Dawn is studying ancient megalithic stone sites and making maps of the Pacific. She paints, decorates mid-century modern house and designs tiki products. You can see more of Dawn's work at Sophista-tiki.com

Not Over Till It's Over
The Men In Grey suits have tried to shut our signal down but the ever so clever Monkeypod was able to out think them and regain control over our podcast. They MIGs have threatened and vowed to infiltrate our barriers, shut us down and bring us up on charges of sedition. Our minutes are numbered, but we will continue to stand defiantly and keep crankin' out tunes until the end. Although our future is lookin' dark, we remain stoked that we are able to put these tunes into the ears of the Coconut Wired listeners. And even though we finally managed to get the sassy podacasters under control at this stage it may be a moot point.
Brad "Tiki Shark" Parker managed to infiltrate the MIG secret laboratories and get a sketch of the MIG's new secret weapon the ZIGs (Zombie in Grey suits.) Those evil monsters are now attempting to use the dead to carry out their vile plans of island domination. Things are not lookin' good for Coconut Wired crew, the future of our island paradise and the people and creatures who inhabit them.

Adventure #11 Hay Wired
Carved Tiki Jewelry complements of Rhys "Paipo" Hall. Browse over to Paipo's home on the web and peruse his intricate handcrafted pendants and adornments.

Hay Wired
Things have not gotten much better for the Coconut Wired Team. While Monkeypod and I were checkin' the progress of the trained monkeys on their demolition mission, the Podacaster, who has now developed a full on personality disorder, started this episode without us. Although his musical selections were prime choices he did start to slip into some way nerdy technical blabber. Fortunately, Chongolio and Monkeypad returned before the show went completely gunny bag. However, the bad news came quickly. The MIGs were getting closer to discovering our hideaway so we had to take drastic actions. That have left us safe for the time being, but for how long? Could this be the end of the Coconut Wired Podcasting adventures?

The Race Is On
Bad news for team Coconut Wired! The Men in Grey suits have landed on the island and are headin' our way! The trained monkeys broke down our camp and we were scramblin down the mountain trying to make a dash for the jungle and torwards our rendezvous point with Captain Karachi. However, luck was not on our side we were slowed down by a sudden downpour, the podacaster has some how become self aware and interupting our transmissions and the MIG are headin' up the path towards us. We managed to get across a rickety bridge and over into an creepy unexplored part of the mysterious temple we have been based in over the past few months. Now we have to wait and see if the MIG will pass us by and give us a chance to make an escape. The trained monkeys have been sent out to the bridge to perform secret demolition operations as a last resort should the MIG try to cross the bridge and try to capture us. Things could get hairy so keep your fingers and eyes crossed!

Adventure #9 Spicy Sonic Scramble Comin Up

Spicy Sonic Scramble, Comin' Up!
The trained monkey scouting parties reported heavy traffic of MIG ships patrolling our waterways. Although no signs of landing on our island we are prepared to take elusive action now. Monkeypod using his infintite knowledge has blended some secret ingredients and using the podacaster he has cooked up some modifications that will serve up a spicy sonic scrambled signal like your ears have never tasted! While your ears are sweating your eyes will be poppin' as you gaze the artistic stylins of Tiki Tony.
It is very dangerous to mess around with dub frequency voodoo because you never know what kind of signals may cross. The podacaster may not handle the increased sonic input, but I trust that Monkeypod knows what he is doing. By serving it up hot, loud and smokin' we hope to scatter our transmission far and wide too further frustrate the Men in Greysuits in their efforts to close in and also to buy ourselves a little more time to get our gear packed and in ready mode. You never know if we will be forced to make an emergency evacuation out of the hidden ancient ruins and off of the mysterious mountain where we have been podcastin' from. Let's hope this works and we don't scramble up something unintended!

Adventure #8 We Were Hoodwinked
Tiki Artwork complements of Heather "Traveling Tiki" Watts. Pop on over to Heather's website at www.heatherwatts.com to scope out more of her incredible art. Why your there be sure to purchase one of her new giclee prints that are available now.

We were Hoodwinked!.
A few weeks ago, while monitoring radio signals, we received a distress call from a mysterious source who claimed to have a very sick kid who was suffering from a life threatening illness and who was in need of immediate medical attention. We quickly put the word out over the Coconut Wired network and ohana from all over the globe quickly rallied to the cause. However, while all the good folks with their hearts in the right places started sending care packages and well wishes, the trained monkey were also at work double checking the validity of the signal. Well they quickly found out it was an unscupulous scam and they uncovered several tracers that had been hidden in the S.O.S. call and were transmitting our signal to the Men In Grey Suits ( M.I.G.) We quickly took action to remove all the nefarious viral hacks that had been secretly coded into our systems both here and at the Lost-Island station. We later learned from Moki that Captain Karachi had reached the Lost-Isle harbor safely but unfortunatley reported a massive fleet of the M.I.G forces have been mobilized and are heading in our direction. So it looks like the tracers may have been in our system long enough to give the M.I.G enough information to get a rough idea of our location. Now the race is on to get the Liki Tiki restocked and headed back to our secret rendezvous point as soon as possible while we keep ourselves hidden in the ruins of the ancient Temple we discovered in our last episode.

Lazy Daze of Summer.
Well it has been a short summer but seem like a long time since our last podcast. So here is what has been happening to our safari. We followed the trail, the Coconesian pointed out to us in our last episode, which lead us to a high mountain in a valley filled with waterfalls, wild animals and lush foliage. We had to set the wild elephants free because they were too large and the trail to small for them to make the journey up the steep twistin' path. Monkeypod, the trained monkeys and myself packed all our supplies to the top of this strange and beautiful mountain that has the ruins of ancient temple on the very top. The temple ruins proved to be a great place to get our bearings straightened out, as well as an ideal place to set up the podacaster and our camp. Well, by the time we got everything moved and set up in the ruins, we were just plain tuckered out and decided we needed to take a holiday and enjoy summer. We played in the waterfalls, ate a bounty of fruits and vegetables and had quite a time just relaxing. Although, peaceful, beautiful and tranquil this place has a strange unexplainable vibe. Or is it just a figment of our imagination?

I'm thinkin' were lost.
I suppose things could be worse so I won't complain...much. It has been a tough month on the trail, the jungle keeps getting thicker and darker and the bugs keep getting bigger. We are still way behind schedule, one of the elephants suffered a swollen bust up foot, the Podacaster was having temper tantrums and then to top it all off the whole caravan zigged when we should of zagged, gnipped when we should of gnopped. The whole crew is a bit irritable, very tired and slightly crispy around the gills. The good news is that thanks to Monkeypod's fortitude, charming personality and ability too speak Coconesian, we met a little coconut headed native who told Monkeypod that he could help us figure out where we are on this island. Unfortunately, the lil bugga wandered off before we could thank him for his help and offer him some of our pineapple jerky. Maybe we will run into the little fellow again sometime. I did get a quick sketch of him and will try to post more sketches of our adventure when I have time.
Adventure #5 Like snap out of it.

Like snap out of it man...
Well, Moki and Monkeypod had to pick up the slack while I was spacin' out on some wacky Juju. It seems my magical transportation from Tiki Oasis 6 had some metaphysical side effects that left me in some kind of a zombie like daze. Fortunately, the trained monkeys found me wanderin' through the jungle and brought me back to camp. Good thing Moki and Monkeypod had the good sense to play some super sonic spell breakin' tunes that knocked me out of that voodoo stupor. Not sure if the head soakin' was necessary, but I probably did need a bath. There still has been no other sign of the mysterious rabbit who disrupted our safari in the last episode.
After finishing up this episode Monkeypod and I were able to finish the choirs and get prepared for pushin' further along in our adventure. We are still searchin' for a podcast friendly location too hunker down in for a spell while we wait for word from Moki on the return of the Liki Tiki to the other side of the island. So far we have been very fortunate to have no run ins with hostile natives, nor has there been any sign that the men in grey suits have decoded our signal. Let's hope our luck holds out.

Episode #5 features some awesome tunes by killer bands, a few which are available as free downloads, so be sure to use the links below to check them out. HUMONGOUS thanks to all of our sponsors who have pitched in and gave their support to the Coconut Wired cause. More thanks to all our listeners for stickin' with us as our sometime sporadic adventures continue. We are back on track and workin' to bring y'all more exciting episodes on a regular basis.

Adventure #4 Tiki Oasis Six

Aloha new visitors!
Too hear our podcast, click on the "pod" icon next to the episode title. Tiki Oasis artwork by Derek Yaniger

Tiki Oasis VI. Feel the Magic...
Aloha and thanks for tuning into Coconut Wired Adventure #4. Well, we had a different show lined up for y'all but an out of control white rabbit hijacked the podacaster. I pursued the long eared critter down a hole and magically ended up at Tiki Oasis VI in San Diego. Fortunately, the rabbit dropped the podacaster and I was still able to send out some musical tidbits and highlights from the weekend. It was an amazing event with so much to do it was overwhelming. It was killer to see so many of my old friends and make some new ones too. The vendors and the artists all brought out their very finest work and I was blown away by all the new work and creativity. The room crawl was completely intoxicatin' and all the host were graciously mixing up and servin' some tasty cocktails. Top hats off to Otto Von Stromheim, Baby Doe, Matt Reese, Hukilau Brown and all the other folks, artist and musicians who pitched in too make this event at a new location a wild success. It was sad to say goodbye to everybody but it's nice to be back on track and in the jungle with the Coconut Wired crew. I wonder what ever happened to that rabbit?

Adventure #3 You're in da Jungle Baby

Adventure #3 You're in the Jungle baby

Aloha new visitors!
Too hear our podcast, click on the "pod" icon next to the episode title. Artwork for this episode complements of Kirby. Visit him and spock his fantastic creations at Kirby's Island.

E Komo Mai and thanks for joining us. We are on safari into the jungle ridin' on the backs of a herd of wild elephants that the trained monkey spotted and managed to wrangle. We said our so longs to Captain Karachi as he took the Liki Tiki back to the Main Island to restock on supplies and do some trading. The plan is to make our way through this thick tropical jungle and look for a secret spot to podcast out of for a few episodes. We will then meet back up with the Liki Tiki on the other side of the Island and split before the Gray Suits can triangulate and decode our signal.
The deeper we go into this mysterious jungle the darker and more eerie it gets. Monkeypod is havin' a heck of time trying to keep all the creepy crawlies out of the banana supply and the Podacaster. But fear not, no stinkin' bugs are going to stop us from bringin' ya the very best in tasty tunage from across the globe.
We also want to also send out a special thanks to Marly in the Netherlands, Guy in Ohio, Don in Florida and all the folks who have written in and given us their support and feedback. If anyone comes across broken links in this blog and lets me know, I will send you out a free Lost-Isle Decal! Also, we had a few bugs sneak into some of the artwork and titles on the enhanced podcasts when played on the iPods. But I think Monkeypod has figured out the trouble and we hope this episode will prove it. Let us know if you experience any more weirdness.

The Reverb Crash Recipe
Created by Kick-The-Reverb a.k.a Ran Mossesco
4 Oz Grapefruit Juice
1.5 Oz Passion Fruit Syrup
.75 Oz Fresh Lime Juice
.75 Spoon (Not Oz!!) Orgeat Syrup*
1 Oz Light Rum (Cuban or Virgin Island)
1 Oz Myers's Dark Jamaican Rum

Put in a shaker with half a cup of crushed ice, shake well and put in a Tiki mug - I guess a 14-16 Oz one , add crushed Ice to fill. Garnish with, eh- I dunno - half a grapefruit, ok, no - with a mint sprig.
* You can use more Orgeat if you want - it depends how strong the taste of the syrup is. The idea is to just feel a bit of it. I used Monin brand which is very strong.

Artwork thanks to Noah Snodgrass & Shawn Dickinson. You got to check out their comic book series Untamed Highway The underground, self published comic book that scratches the underbelly of vanished American pop culture. I love this stuff and you will too! We also are featuring more of Sam Gambino's art during this episode because we dig it that much!

There ain't nothin' gonna stop 'um...
Aloha Friends and welcome back to Coconut Wired Adventure #2. Monkeypod has been super busy trying to get the equipment back up to speed after that zap we took during our last episode. Things are workin' but we still have a few loose wires and broken connections to work out. The trained monkey have been sent over in the dingy to the Liki Tiki too retrieve the rest of our supplies. We plan to get off the beach after this episode and go deep into the jungle where we will have less of a chance of being spotted by hostile locals, wild beasties and the beady red eyes of the men in grey suits.

"This show has been posted in an "Enhanced" format AAC (M4A) formatted file instead of the older MP3 format. While this format allows for richer content including imagery and web links, it is only compatible with QuickTime and/or iTunes both of which are simultaneously Macintosh and Windows compatible."

And thus they set sail to cast their pod....
Aloha and thanks for listening and joining us on our first adventure in pirate podcasting. Here is short overview of our journey so far. After leaving the main isle and setting sail into the unknown, Monkeypod, myself and our crew of trained simians were able to find a safe harbor for the Liki Tiki in a lagoon on one of the outer islands. Monkeypod used the Liki Tiki's transceiver to send the first part of the show to Moki, our signal scrambler and main isle contact. While Moki encrypted and uploaded, the Coconut Wired troupes made our way to shore to set up our base camp before the worst part of an approaching storm caught up to us. The rain, thunder and lightning came on heavy and thick and there were a few close calls but we managed to get most of the equipment high and dry. With any luck and a some elbow grease, the Coconut Wired clan should be able to get our next episode up into the ether in a few short weeks. That is as if the squares don't decode our primary signal too quickly and we don't run into any hostile locals.

Yes, existence can get interesting and dangerous on the outer islands to be sure, but it is worth all the the risks and pitfalls knowing that we are zapping killer tunes and valuable info into the ears of you folks and having a little fun in the process.
