It has been a while since our last update, but we’ve decided to make PixelCryptor open source. We simply don’t have enough time to make enhancements to this great little piece of freeware.

There have been issues with a KB update that Microsoft released a few weeks ago. To address this issue we’ve released an update of VistaGlazz. If you experienced problems after installing KB updates, we strongly recommend that you install this new version and see if the problem persists.

We have released a new version of PixelCryptor. This version contains minor code optimalizations and that comes with a new setup. The code and the setup are now properly signed and will function without problems on Windows 7.

It has been a rough few weeks for VistaGlazz. First our advertiser was marked as adware and VistaGlazz itself was having some problems with Windows Vista Service Pack 2. We’re glad to announce the release of VistaGlazz 2.3.

VistaGlazz adware?

Since our last release of VistaGlazz 2.2 we’ve noticed that some antivirus vendors are detecting adware in the VistaGlazz setup. We can ensure you this is nothing to worry about if you have downloaded Vistaglazz from a reliable source (e.g. CodeGazer.com or Download.com).

VistaGlazz is freeware and to reduce the costs of hosting and to compensate for the time we put into developing the application we’ve added OpenCandy to our setup. During the VistaGlazz installation you will see an offer, and you can choose whether to install the offer or just ignore it. OpenCandy is consulting anti-virus vendors to stop the false positives from appearing. We are considering removing OpenCandy for now until matters are resolved.

With upcoming Windows 7 service pack 1 we decided to fix some small issues to make it a smooth transfer once service pack 1 is here. We’ve rebuild the setup to make it more compatible with Windows 7.

What’s new in VistaGlazz 2.2?

Small UI changes to make the patching process a bit easier to understand
Small UI changes to the diagnostic screen (some typos here and there)
Compiled the setup with a new version of InnoSetup to offer better Windows 7 support
Changes to the patching engine to be able to support Windows 7 SP1 in the near future

It’s been quite some time since our last update. Holidays, crazy work schedules and moving into a new neighbourhood drained on those precious hours we normally work on our CodeGazer products. After careful testing we finally bring you VistaGlazz 2.1!

What’s new in VistaGlazz 2.1?

We’ve cleaned up a lot of the code in our solution, simplified the patching routines. This should result in better stability and prevent those VistaGlazz stopped working messages.
We’ve added a commandline utility that should give you the ability to perform most of the patching / unpatching actions without user interface
We’ve moved the diagnostic application to a separate executable, decreasing memory usage and making it easier to find
We’ve upgraded the setup, added a few .NET framework checks and better Windows 7 support

Today we say goodbye to the forum and introduce GetSatisfaction. With GetSatisfaction we can more efficiently handle your support calls, questions and ideas. As you can see there is also a feedback tab on the left of your screen. You can use that to create a message to us on the fly. We’re looking forward to your feedback.

The beauty of freeware is that it is accessible to everyone. We don’t have to worry about piracy, because we encourage everyone to download and enjoy it. One of the downsides of freeware is that you have to put a lot of time and effort into developing an application, and though we appreciate all the great feedback, it’s very likely that the costs will only increase. Here are a few things you guys can do to help us to continue our work and provide you with new and improved applications.

When you install VistaGlazz or PixelCryptor a component called OpenCandy will show you an interesting download compatible with your system. We are very concerned with the software we bundle with our applications and we make sure that it is in no way spyware or other forms of malware. Working on VistaGlazz 2.1

Thank you all for the feedback on VistaGlazz 2.0

We’re glad to see that it enables a lot of people to use custom themes on their systems. With this post I’d like to address a few questions we’ve got by email or on the forum:

It says my system is not supported, what does that mean?
We try to make VistaGlazz compatible with a lot of systems. However there are a few culture specific Windows versions that have their own unique files that need patching, which are hard for us to support. Another reason your files might not be supported could mean that Microsoft released a small update. Late January or early February we’ll release VistaGlazz 2.1 with enhanced patching routines.

I can patch my system but not my aero style
Aero patches are only available on Windows Vista (Aero editions: Home Premium, Ultimate etc.). Microsoft introduced Aero with Windows Vista, that rules out Windows XP support. In Windows 7 maximized windows are already transparent, so there’s no need for a patched Aero.

If you have any problems installing visual styles or patching your system please have a look at the VistaGlazz help file. You can find it in your Start Menu or by pressing F1 in VistaGlazz.
