Remember the early days of lockdown, when time seemed to slow down just enough for people to try something new? That’s when Dalgona Coffee took over the internet — frothy, photogenic, and surprisingly easy to make.

This South Korean-inspired whipped coffee became more than just a drink. It was a moment. A ritual. A small joy in uncertain times.

But Dalgona Coffee isn’t just a pandemic trend — it’s a delightful treat you can enjoy any time you need a caffeine kick with a cloud-like twist. Here’s everything you need to make it yourself, with step-by-step images, tips, and a couple of tasty variations.

What Is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona Coffee is made by whipping instant coffee, sugar, and hot water into a thick, caramel-colored foam, then spooning it over milk (hot or cold). The result? A stunning layered drink that’s as smooth as it is strong.

The name “Dalgona” comes from a Korean street candy that has a similar taste and texture.

Ingredients

You only need four basic ingredients:

2 tablespoons instant coffee

2 tablespoons sugar (white sugar works best for stability)

2 tablespoons hot water

1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based — your choice!)

Note: You’ll also need a hand whisk or electric mixer, and a bit of patience if you go manual.

Step-by-Step Instructions (With Images)

1. Mix the Coffee Base

Image 1: A bowl with instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. Alt text: Ingredients for Dalgona coffee in a mixing bowl.

In a medium bowl, combine the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. Use equal parts of each — that’s key to getting the signature whipped texture.

2. Whip Until Fluffy

Image 2: Hand mixer whipping the mixture into soft peaks. Alt text: A fluffy, light brown whipped coffee foam forming in a bowl.

Using a hand mixer (or a LOT of arm strength and a whisk), beat the mixture for 3–5 minutes until it becomes thick, glossy, and forms soft peaks. It should look like coffee-colored whipped cream.

3. Pour Milk into a Glass

Image 3: A clear glass filled with cold milk and ice cubes. Alt text: A glass of milk ready for Dalgona coffee topping.

Fill your glass about ¾ of the way with milk. Add ice if you prefer it cold. You can also heat the milk if you want a warm version.

4. Add the Whipped Coffee

Image 4: The whipped coffee being spooned on top of the milk. Alt text: Spoon placing Dalgona coffee foam on top of milk.

Spoon the whipped coffee over the milk. You can swirl it into the milk or leave it floating for that signature two-tone look.

5. Snap a Pic (Optional, But Highly Encouraged ????)

Image 5: Finished Dalgona coffee in a glass, ready to drink. Alt text: A layered Dalgona coffee with creamy foam on top of iced milk.

Because let’s be honest — this drink is basically an Instagram model.

Variations to Try

Mocha Dalgona: Add 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder to the mix before whipping.

Vanilla Dalgona: Stir ½ teaspoon vanilla extract into the milk for a sweet twist.

Vegan version: Use oat, almond, or soy milk — it works just as well.

Spicy kick: Dust the top with cinnamon or a pinch of chili powder.

Pro Tips

Use instant coffee — brewed or ground coffee won’t foam.

Don’t under-whip. You want those soft, stable peaks.

Serve immediately for the best texture. The foam holds, but it’s most luxurious right after whipping.

Pair It With…

Try sipping Dalgona coffee alongside a warm butter croissant, almond biscotti, or a slice of banana bread. The creamy foam and slightly bitter coffee taste pair beautifully with sweet, buttery treats.

I will be posting a separate post on how to make a latte with steamed milk, but this coffee recipe is a quick latte-like drink.? It’s good enough for me when I have 1 minute to make a cup of coffee on the run.

Ingredients

1 CBTL’s Intenso Espresso Capsule

1 cup of milk of your choice. I usually use Lactaid.. because… yeah. it’s sweet :)

Caramel or other syrup of your choice

1 pack of sweetener – when I use Lactaid milk, I rarely use any sugar.

As I said, this is a quick recipe.? Pour your milk in a mug cup and microwave for 30-40 seconds.? Brew 1 capsule of your favorite CBTL’s espresso capsule. Add syrup and sugar into your espresso.? Then stir.? Take out your milk from the microwave and pour it into the espresso.? Stir gently.? That’s it!

Iced Caffe Latte is actually very simple to make if you have an espresso machine at home. I don’t have the machine, but I have a CBTL’s coffee brewer that can also brew espresso using a capsule. It tastes awesome and the machine is very inexpensive. So it takes me less than 5 minutes to make a perfect cup of iced Caffee Latte from home. If you don’t have an espresso brewing machine, check out our brewed iced coffee recipe.

Ingredients :

1 espresso (or make it 2)

6 oz cold milk (or as much as you like)

coffee ice cubes

syrups as needed

Pour your favorite milk into a glass cup.? When your espresso is ready, pour it into the cup.? Please note that coffee ice cubes are not added yet.? You will be putting them the last, otherwise, the espresso will dilute.? In order to maintain the integrity of the taste of the espresso, use milk first, then espresso.

You may be tempted to use foamed milk on your iced coffee, but it’s not going to taste good. If you still want to try, go ahead :)

Lastly, add syrup or sweeteners as needed. I personally like to use Truvia and caramel syrup.

Previously, I posted a simple version of iced coffee using instant coffee. But let me show you how to make a great tasting iced coffee using your regular coffee brewer

Ingredients :

Fresh Ground Coffee – twice the normal amount

8 cups of water

4-8 coffee ice cubes – always have them prepared in your freezer!

Sugar or syrup – sweeten it with your favorite sweetener

How to Make Iced Coffee with Drip Brewer

Make sure your brewer has enough space for double the amount of your normal coffee, otherwise, it will overflow

Brew your double-strength coffee

Cool your coffee at room temperature or put it in your freezer for 10-15 minutes.

Prepare a glass cup and fill it with iced coffee cubes

Sweeten your coffee as desired.

Few more tips on making iced coffee..? since I know how much sugar I need for my coffee, I add my sugar, Truvia, right after the coffee is brewed when it’s still hot.? That way, I know the sugar is perfectly dissolved in my coffee.? Another one is that I usually put my glass in the freezer for a few minutes after putting ice coffee cubes.? That makes the drink really chill when it’s served.

Lastly, after you are done with brewing, you are going to put another 4 cups of coffee and brew it again.? You will be using the leftover for making ice coffee cubes for later.? When ice cubes are made, make sure to store them in a ziplock.? Or your ice coffee cubes will taste/smell like whatever is in your freezer.
