I think you have some painfully truthful observations, that Indians are obsessed with English. But it would be hard to generalize to other European or Asian groups. French, German, Spanish, Chinese etc probably use their language more compare to Indians. Still, Only about 10% Indian population understands English well, and its hardly any ones mother language.

If the moderator changed the default setting for "reply to" from "to group" to "to sender", users would end up sending all mails intended for the group to the sender (a single person), defeating the whole purpose of discussions in the group.

So its not an either/or option and hence giving control to the moderator is not enough, which smacks of functional-centric design

I would say the original flow has been from offline reality to online virtuality - what else is caste (Brahmin/Vegetarian/spiritual) and other social groups symbolised? If anything, it can only be a reverse flow.
