Switch 2 announcement? What can Nintendo’s history teach us about when the Switch 2 announcement might be?

When has Nintendo announced the prices and release dates for some of their consoles and systems, at least going back to the Nintendo GameCube?

In the video above I show and talk about the dates for when each Nintendo console had its price and release date announced, and when it released.

With all the rumors swirling about a Switch 2 announcement happening soon, as rumors have been swirling about this since 2020 (?), I figured history might be our best clue as to when Nintendo might announce the Switch 2, or at least show us the new system?

What do you get when you mix COVID quarantine + coffee + Animal Crossing? Too much time, weird family schedules, and craziness in Animal Crossing.

This past Sunday morning, July 5, 2020, I decided to try an experiment and see how many turnips I could buy before Mrs. Coffee was ready to play. I was up early and started buying turnips from Daisy Mae almost as soon as she started selling them.

I had coffee brewed up and ready to go, and started running around buying turnips and then placing them all over our island.

Is this the most amount of turnips ever purchased in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? I'm not sure what the record is, but this was the record for me. It will probably be my record for a good while, but with the whole COVID quarantine going on, crazy family schedules, and coffee, I figured why not try something like this.

What's the most amount of turnips ever purchased in an Animal Crossing game on a Sunday from good old Daisy Mae?

After purchasing this many turnips and having them all over our island, we started experiencing a bit of lag in the character movements for the first time since we started playing Animal Crossing, sometimes almost like our characters were getting stuck running between the turnips.

Tom Nook didn't vote me off the island yet, so I think I'm still okay there. Mrs. Coffee may delete my file though if I continue the turnip antics. Timmy and Tommy of course never had great turnip prices for us on our island during the week, but I was able to get rid of all the turnips, I just sold the last 3 sets of 100 on our own island.
I hope everybody is doing well in these crazy times, and hopefully you all have been enjoying some decent video games and great coffees as well.

Questions:
Are any of you playing Animal Crossing on the Switch, and if so, do you have a favorite activity in the game outside of buying turnips?

Crazy Caffeinated Predictions - Nintendo Switch for $199.99 and launch games!

We are less than an hour away from learning all about the Nintendo Switch and its planned release! What Nintendo first party games will be available day one? What third party games will be available? But, most importantly I believe, what will its price be?

I have been making posts around different places (Twitter and reddit mainly), about what I hope the Switch's price will be, and why I think it's important.

How much do I think the Nintendo Switch will be at launch? Brew yourself some coffee, and let's take a look at that and some more of my crazy, caffeinated, predictions!

Caffeinated Thoughts (I finished a Venti Starbucks Doubleshot on Ice about an hour before I started this):
Some of the below is a direct copy/paste of a comment I made on reddit a few days ago, with some edits.

Nintendo is not releasing the Switch in a vacuum. Nintendo already dominates the portable video game market with dedicated hardware via the 3DS (though odd note: The 3DS is absent from all stores at the moment in my area, and can't be ordered directly from major websites.). Sony and Microsoft are winning the home console race, specifically Sony.

How does Nintendo plan to appeal to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners, and even their own 3DS owners, at $300? I don't think they will.

Nintendo will probably get a good percentage of Zelda fans buying the Switch day one that skipped the Wii U, but that number is below 10 million.

Nintendo will have about two million Switch units ready for its worldwide launch. One latest rumor is they are now aiming for 2.5 million to be available, if that rumor turns out to be correct.

How does Nintendo make the Switch appealing, and continue to keep the Switch flying off shelves? I believe price is extremely important. I think they need to make it $100 less than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and advertise and market it like crazy. I'm not talking crazy like the Wii U launch ads in the U.S., those were crazy horrible.

What helped the Wii win its console generation? Price. It was $150 less than the best Xbox 360 bundle, and $250 below the cheapest PS3 bundle at launch. It was the lowest priced home console.

The Wii was the lowest priced console, included Wii Sports bundled in at that price, and Nintendo couldn't keep the Wii on store shelves for 2+ years?

Sony had major issues with pricing at launch, and Microsoft had hardware issues (RROD).

Nintendo does not want the Switch to be a Wii U in terms of sales, and probably not even a GameCube (though, it was better than the Wii U). Nintendo probably wants the Switch to be a Wii in terms of sales, at least I would think.

Is Nintendo releasing something less powerful than the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but pricing it at the Xbox One level of $299.99? I don't think they will.

Tablets are as cheap as a few bags of dirt these days. I paid $33 for an Amazon Kindle for one of our sons for Christmas. It plays games. It does YouTube. It does apps. Amazon is dominating the sub-$100 tablet market. Apple is dominating the higher end tablet market.

People that own those tablets can do Pokemon Go already, and iPad/iPhone owners now have Super Mario Run with that being released on Android later.

If Nintendo thinks that Mario will save them, or even Zelda, I think they need to simply look at the Wii U. The Wii U had some awesome Mario games (Super Mario 3D World is fantastic, and I recommend it highly, just finished a level in it before typing this), but those games didn't do a thing to help keep the Wii U from failing.

The Wii U had Hyrule Warriors, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess (and are we still assuming BotW?). It didn't help the system's performance.

If Nintendo fails the Switch at launch, it's a hard road to recovery, like what happened with the Wii U.

I think the Switch needs to be under $200 for major success and for it not to end up like Wii U, but maybe Nintendo will try $250 for launch to get all the hardcore fans' extra cash early, then drop it to $200 for the holidays? Maybe the Switch will be more powerful than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One combined with Duck Tape, and Nintendo will say they are going for the higher end market to justify a higher price? Maybe, but I don't think so.

Where am I getting the sub-$200 price idea from? First, a rumor from 2015. You can read it here:

Second, Nintendo's partnership with Nvidia and Nvidia's own Shield Tablets that have released on the market since 2013.

When was the last Nvidia Shield tablet released? November 2015.

What was it priced? $200.

The Nvidia Shield K1 has an 8", 1080p screen. The Nintendo Switch? 6, 720p screen.

The Nvidia Shield K1 did not include a controller, but I am assuming the Nintendo Switch will include the Joy-Cons, and of course the docking station, in a base bundle.

Sony dominated the PS2 era, and they controlled pricing. Nintendo better not forget that. It didn't matter the GameCube was $100 less at launch, because Sony dropped the PlayStation 2 down to $199.99 about six months after the GameCube released, and that basically sealed the deal for Sony winning that generation.

Will Nintendo really gamble and release the Switch at the same price as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One? I don't see how that is a recipe for success, even if they have exclusive games and big exclusive third party titles.

I think they need to "hit the ground running" with the Switch, and not stop.

Resident Evil 4, and all those Capcom deals on the GameCube. Didn't matter.

Price is important. What did one Sony representative say happened when Microsoft announced the price of the Xbox One? Something like Sony representatives were running up and down the aisles celebrating, because the PS4 would be $100 cheaper?

Who is dominating, and has been? Sony. Do we even know Microsoft's Xbox One sales numbers? (Honest question, I looked and didn't find them.) Sony's $100 price difference and sales of the PS4 basically forced Microsoft to abandon the Kinect, to get the price down quickly.

I don't think $250 for the Switch + costs of a game is a smart move, but I am glad to be proven wrong. If the Switch is priced at $249.99, it makes it $300+, just like the PS4 and Xbox One, when you buy The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One had console bundles that were discounted down to $250 during the holidays.

Games?

I do think The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be a launch day title for the Switch, just like Twilight Princess was on the Wii. I also think Nintendo may delay the Wii U version, to make the Switch a more attractive buy to the hardcore Zelda fans that want it day one.

Some people were saying they heard Breath of the Wild might not be ready for March, and when I heard that, I tweeted out that if Zelda wasn't ready, maybe the system wasn't ready. I think Breath of the Wild is a must for the Switch's launch.

The rumor I posted above from 2015 said Diddy Kong Racing 2 was in the works for Nintendo's console that was to be released in 2016 (so, I assume it is the Switch), and I think having another racing title at launch like Diddy Kong Racing would be awesome, but I'm almost thinking that maybe Nintendo is going to morph what was Diddy Kong Racing 2, into Mario Kart for the Switch.

They could be putting all the Donkey Kong/Diddy Kong levels in the game, and put Diddy Kong in it as well. I could be wrong, but I'm excited to see if there was any validity behind the Diddy Kong Racing rumor.

Nintendo has been working with Japanese developers a lot more closely the last few years. They made a great deal with PlatinumGames in getting Bayonetta 2 (and the original) released on the Wii U, as well as The Wonderful 101. PlatinumGames also helped Nintendo in the development of Star Fox for the Wii U.

I'm thinking that there will be a PlatinumGames title for the Switch's launch, and I think it will be Vanquish 2, probably with the original Vanquish included just like they did with the Bayonetta series on the Wii U.

Quick Crazy Caffeinated Nintendo Switch Predictions:

Price - $199.99, in some fashion. Base bundle at the very least, with no game.

Games:

1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, launch day release.

2) Vanquish 2, with the original included, launch day release.

3) Diddy Kong Racing 2, launch day release, or massive Mario Kart 8 update with Diddy Kong and tons of new levels.

4) Craziest of the crazy predictions. Nintendo will announce the Nintendo 3DS is no longer being produced, and the Nintendo Switch will be their only video game console in production so they can concentrate on one system.

5) Eternal Darkness is announced for the Switch.

6) Metroid is teased, but no official release date. Just a teaser trailer.

7) Endless Ocean is getting the HD treatment, with both the Wii titles being ported to the Switch.

Questions:

Am I crazy for hoping and thinking it will be under $200? We will find out in about 25 minutes!

Are games art? The Interactive Canvas is making the case! Kickstarter campaign

Are games art? Roger Ebert, the late film critic, made big waves in the video game community when he said that games weren't art and never would be. He then expounded on that quote later with an article and said, "Let me just say that no video gamer now living will survive long enough to experience the medium as an art form."

He wrote that in 2010, and like I have disagreed with many critics before him, I disagree with his opinion on this topic as well. That's why when my good friends from DigitallyDownloaded launched a new Kickstarter campaign pertaining to this very topic, it became my first Kickstarter campaign to ever back!

November & December Brewed! Coffees Consumed, Games Played...

So, I performed another vanishing act, like a great magician, during the months of November and December (and much of January!) on the site. While I wasn't posting, I was keeping busy in the video game world and drinking lots of coffee though!

What coffees did I consume and games have I been playing? Brew yourself some coffee, and let's take a look!

Coffees Consumed
The quick list: Beaumont Coffee Classic Roast, Community Coffee Medium Roast, Café Du Monde, Beaumont Coffee Gingerbread, Beaumont Coffee Salted Caramel, Beaumont Coffee Pumpkin Spice, and Beaumont Coffee Toasted Coconut.

If you're wondering what's up with all the different Beaumont Coffee roasts and flavors, it is Mrs. Coffee's fault! I personally don't like flavored coffees (on a rare occasion maybe, like spotting a Sasquatch!), but Mrs. Coffee does. So, when the holiday flavors hit the store shelves, she decided to try some out, as you can tell from the list!

I don't mind the Beaumont Coffee Salted Caramel that much, and I'm not remember bad thoughts about the Toasted Coconut, but the Pumpkin Spice and Gingerbread just aren't for me. Will I still drink them? Yes. But, I would never buy them for myself. The flavors in them are a bit too artificial for me, and seem to cover up any actual coffee flavor.

Still, I don't mind trying new flavors out, and was even glad to see Mrs. Coffee bring in some new coffee flavors during the holidays.

Games Played
The quick list breakdown by system:
Wii U - Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Wii Sports Club, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, LEGO City Undercover, Toki Tori 2+, F-Zero, Mega Man X, Super Mario Bros. 2, Donkey Kong, Wii Fit U, Nintendo Land, Kung Fu Rabbit, and Super Mario 3D World.

PC - Full Bore.

2DS - Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Mario & Luigi Dream Team.

Super Mario 3D World has been absolutely awesome to play through with Mrs. Coffee. While we started playing it in December, we have played it A LOT more this month. If you have ever enjoyed any Mario platforming games in the past, I highly recommend you giving Super Mario 3D World a try. We haven't finished everything in it just yet, but we are making excellent progress on our Mushroom Kingdom adventure. We have finished up the "main" portion of the game (saw the credits roll), and are working on finding and unlocking everything now.

Bean 1 received a Nintendo 2DS for Christmas, and he received both Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Mario & Luigi Dream Team for it. I have helped him play both games, but Mario & Luigi Dream Team has gotten more play-time so far. And, I really like the game! While I have only played a Final Fantasy game for maybe 20 minutes, I have watched Mrs. Coffee play some in the past. The way the battles are in Mario & Luigi Dream Team reminded me of the battle system in some of the Final Fantasy games I have seen (probably a lot more simple though?).

Caffeinated Thoughts
While I have been absent from posting, like I mentioned above, I have been busy working on a side project that has turned out to be a bit more time consuming than I ever imagined it would have been, when I first started it. Hopefully once I get the next step of my side project done, I will resume normal posting (whatever that is around here!).

Since this is the first post-Christmas post, there were gaming and coffee related items on Christmas morning other than Bean 1's 2DS and games. Super Mario 3D World was the "family gift" for Christmas, and we actually went the digital route with it and downloaded it. I also received some coffee blends for Christmas, which I have been enjoying and they should be getting listed in the January Brewed post next month. Another Wii U title I grabbed during the holidays that was opened on Christmas morning was Scribblenauts Unlimited, but it wasn't played until after the first of the year.

Questions

Which console to buy?! Wii U, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One? 2013 Holiday Console Buying Guide

It's not a secret that I enjoy games on Nintendo systems, and the Wii was my most played system of the last generation consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii). The Wii U has been my most played system over the last year though, and I have really enjoyed my time with the games on the system.

Every "next generation" home console system is now out in the U.S., though the newest two (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) might be kind of hard to find right now. While the Wii U released last year and I bought it day one, I have not purchased either the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One. Why?

Well, in short, because I'm pretty cheap. I have never purchased more than one console each generation, when they first release. I have always started with buying the lowest priced console in any new or "next" generation, and then usually pick up additional systems as their prices drop.

If you own a Wii, PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360 and are debating on buying a Wii U, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One this holiday season, which one would I recommend? Brew yourself some coffee, and take a look below at CoffeeWithGames' 2013 Holiday Console Buying Guide!

If you can't tell from the image, the Wii U is the new "next" generation home video game console I would recommend this holiday season for the many people that might be trying to make that decision.

Caffeinated Thoughts
For me, the Wii U being backwards compatible with Wii games (and even using Wii Remotes and Nunchuks in some Wii U games) is a big selling point for the system for current Wii owners. If you already have a collection of retail Wii games, or even downloaded some Virtual Console games, you can transfer most of your save files from your Wii games and your Virtual Console games to your Wii U console.

I think another big selling point for the Wii U this holiday season is that it is now being bundled with New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U. Some stores are also still selling the "Limited Edition" Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle set for $299.99 as well. If you are looking at getting a Wii U console for someone for Christmas (or, other holiday), but not sure which game(s) to get them, here's a way to help figure it out. If you just casually ask them, "If Mario and Link were to get in a battle, who would win?", you will probably quickly find out which character and game series they enjoy more, and can decide to buy them either the Wii U Mario or Wii U Zelda bundle without them even knowing they helped!

The last generation of consoles, I ended up getting the Wii first, because it was the lowest priced console at the time. And even with the Wii's friend code issues and lack of online voice chat (for almost 2 years), I spent many hours playing games like Call of Duty: World at War, Monster Hunter Tri, The Conduit, and GoldenEye 007 online. I really liked that Nintendo didn't charge for the Wii's online multiplayer service, and I was really glad to see Nintendo keep the Wii U's online multiplayer free.

If you don't want to have to have a monthly subscription to play online multiplayer in games like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Assassin's Creed IV, then going with the Wii U might be your best decision now.

If you are looking at grabbing a PlayStation 4, but didn't pre-order one, you can grab one right now (at the time of this posting anyway!). If you hop over to its Amazon.com page, HERE, you can currently grab the PlayStation 4: Launch Edition for its MSRP of only $399.99.

I'm not sure how long it will be available on Amazon.com and if it will sell out, but you can purchase it now and not have to worry with hunting one down later if you're planning on getting one before/for Christmas.

While I have a friend currently waiting to get a PS4 in line right now (Central Time Zone), I'm not planning on getting a PS4 this holiday season. The picture below is of the PS4 games my friend's wife got him as a surprise to go along with his PlayStation 4 he is about to pickup!

I'll probably wait a few months and see what the reception is before making a decision to grab one (and maybe hope for a price drop!). But I do think it's awesome to see an online retailer like Amazon.com with some PlayStation 4s in stock for launch day.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is currently my most played Wii U game, and has been for much of the past year. It will probably be my most played Wii U game for much of the entire time the console is out.

The majority of my time in Black Ops II has been playing online multiplayer, mainly Team Deathmatch battles. I never quit matches in Black Ops II (or other online games that I play) just because I'm losing. While I may occasionally have to ditch a game I'm in the middle of because I lose track of the time, it's never because I'm losing (or my team may be losing).

So, in a recent online match when my Kill/Death ratio was 1/11 at one point. Did I choose to quit, or not to quit? The video below is of that recent Black Ops II match I played on the Wii U, and despite getting off to a HORRIBLE start for my team (as you will see), I stuck with it and turned things around a bit:

If you're wondering about the title of the video, and this post, I played the match using the Wii U's GamePad Off-TV Play. And it's how I have spent the majority of my time playing Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Questions
If you play online multiplayer games, like Black Ops II, do you find yourself sticking matches out (like Nick said he does as well earlier this year)? Or do you quit matches if it seems there is no hope?

Saying October was a busy month for us, would be an understatement and I could probably be put on trial and convicted of perjury if I was to testify under oath that October was only "busy". While I aged another year in October and the beginning of the month was busy as usual, the second half of the month is when we were out of the house and the busiest. We were out of the house for more than half of October, visiting our families in another state.

I do 99% of my web related work from my desktop PC. So, while I thought I might get a few posts done using Mrs. Coffee's laptop while we were out of town, that just didn't happen. I did bring our Wii U with us though, and it was played a good amount on the first part of our trip.

What coffees did I consume and games did I play in October? Brew yourself some coffee, and let's take a look!

Coffees Consumed
Traveling out of town for much of October resulted in many more coffees being brewed up and consumed by me, than in a normal month. In October, I consumed Beaumont Coffee Classic Roast, Beaumont Pumpkin Spice Coffee, K-Cup Breakfast Blend, K-Cup Italian Roast, K-Cup Black Silk, and Community Coffee Medium Roast. I also had one or two cups of McDonald's Premium Roast Coffee, as well as some random gas stations' coffees in October during our long road trip.

We don't have a Keurig Coffee machine, but my mom does. She has a wide assortment of the K-Cups, and I probably consumed more than the K-Cup blends I have listed above, but those are the ones I remember for sure. The K-Cup Breakfast Blend is nice medium blend coffee, while both the K-Cup Black Silk and the K-Cup Italian Roast coffees are more like a dark roast. The Italian Roast was the strongest, I would say it is close to tasting like a regular Starbucks house blend from stores, but not quite that strong (or, burnt I would say). Mrs. Coffee and I both consumed A LOT of the K-Cups while we were visiting my family on the first part of our trip, and it reconfirmed my thoughts of why I can't have a Keurig Coffee machine in our house. We would be bankrupt!

The Community Coffee Medium Roast was the coffee with consumed morning, noon, and night on the second leg of our trip. We have brewed up some Community coffees in the past, and it is a much milder medium roast coffee.

Games Played
The "Instant Coffee" list of games I played in October is: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Super Metroid, Pushover, Mutant Mudds Deluxe, Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Pure Chess, F-Zero, LEGO City: Undercover, and Full Bore.

Super Metroid - Bean 1 enjoys watching me play this one, and earlier in the month he requested I play, "Super Metro!" He now says the name properly, but I did laugh to myself at him calling it Super Metro the first few times he did it. I am completely stuck in this one though! I am not sure if I have hit a glitch, but I can't figure out how to progress in the game anymore. As mentioned above, we took our Wii U with us when we went out of town and a friend of mine started playing my file. Even he couldn't figure out how to progress in the level anymore! Perhaps once I look up how to continue my game, I will play it some more.

Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition - I borrowed this game from my neighbor in early October, and played it some before we left. I have enjoyed my time with the game, though I did get stuck on one part that took me a while to figure out what I was doing. While I haven't beat the game or gotten super far into it yet, I do think the use of the Wii U GamePad is very well done. The game makes great use of the GamePad in regular play (playing with the TV as the main screen), such as using the GamePad's screen as the city's map while traveling about, and using the GamePad's touch-screen for scanning segments, where you move your finger on/around the screen looking for radio signals. And the can be played completely on just the Wii U GamePad, via the Off-TV Play feature.

Full Bore - I found out about this game, after following one its developers on Twitter and being offered a copy of it. I let them know before I received it from them, that I don't do reviews or game coverage in typical fashions around here. But I said I would give the game a try and provide some feedback. I haven't played it very much due to getting it right before leaving town, but what do I think of it so far? If Samus was ever bored and looking for something to play, I think this would be a game she would play. You play as a boar, and the gameplay mechanics keep with that aspect pretty well. It is a 2D puzzle adventure game, and you can dig, push, and climb/hop your way through the world as you explore. There are items spread around different parts of the map that you can collect if you seek them out (not quite sure what they do just yet), and many require some puzzle solving to reach. From my very short time with the game though, it seems like there is a lot to do and many areas to explore. The game's 2D pixel art reminds me a lot of Mutant Mudds' retro style, and I like what I have seen so far. I'm hoping to get through the rest of the game this month, and do a more detailed piece on it. If you want to know more about the game, check out the trailer below and visit its webpage HERE:

LEGO City: Undercover - I mentioned in last month's "September Brewed" post that I had "encountered a serious issue with the game". I had to send the game off for repair, and I did get it back before we left town. And I'm glad I did! As I mentioned above, I brought our Wii U with us and LEGO City: Undercover was the biggest hit with the younger kids. They enjoyed just roaming around the city, driving vehicles, and riding on the trains. New Super Mario Bros. U (NSMBU) was played a little bit by them because they could still play it while the TV was being used for something else, but not nearly as much as they played LEGO City: Undercover.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II - The first weekend we arrived at our first destination of the trip, my best friend growing up came to town to visit. Late one night while our wives and my mom were talking, we fired up Black Ops II on the Wii U. It was his first time really seeing the Wii U's GamePad features in action, other than briefly playing NSMBU and Super Metroid earlier, and we played multiple online matches. He played on the TV using one of the Wii U Pro Controllers I had just picked up, and I played using the GamePad with Off-TV Play. It was the first time I had really put Black Ops II's splitscreen mutliplayer option to the test. And I was super impressed with how well it worked, throughout all of our matches. Dear Nintendo of America, Please start advertising these type of features and games on the Wii U...

Caffeinated Thoughts
I did purchase one new Wii U game in October, Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Amazon put the game on sale for just $9.99, and being an Amazon Prime member, I got free shipping on it!

I still haven't opened it up yet, but have a solution for my lack of gaming woes that I'll be implementing here shortly.

I believe September was my first full month of regular posting, with no data reports! What has the world come to, when there are no data reports? Well, it could possibly be one of the reasons the U.S. government has shutdown, but I'm not positive.

Now, what coffees did I consume and games did I play in September, even beating one of them? Brew yourself some coffee, and let's take a look!

Coffees Consumed
In our "Coffee House" we roasted up the Beaumont Classic Roast coffee blend daily, which has been a staple coffee blend for us for quite some time now. We went through almost two "270" cup containers of it in September, and I'm still enjoying the blend. It's not too strong, and not too weak.

Another coffee blend I had during September was a Caribou Coffee "Coffee of the Day" blend on a business venture. I don't buy coffee from coffee shops much these days, but if I were to have to choose between a Caribou Coffee "Coffee of the Day" or a Starbucks "Coffee of the Day" blend, I would probably go with the Caribou Coffee more often. While I can enjoy my coffee drinks strong and dark roasted, and I drink them black 99% of the time, Starbucks' coffee from the stores often seems a bit over roasted to me. The Caribou Coffee blend I had was a good medium roast blend, and I didn't feel like I was drinking coffee that had an almost burnt flavor to it.

Games Played
The "Instant Coffee" list of games I played in September is: Pure Chess, Kung Fu Rabbit, LEGO City: Undercover, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Toki Tori 2+, Rabbids Land, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and Pushover.

Pure Chess is now available on iOS and Android devices, and I downloaded the free mobile version of Pure Chess last month on Mrs. Coffee's NOOK HD+ Tablet. I have really enjoyed my time with the game, and if you missed my write up on the mobile version, you can read it HERE. I haven't made any purchase in the mobile version yet, simply because the tablet device I play it on isn't mine. I am planning on getting the Wii U version of Pure Chess when it releases though (hopefully later this month!), and I'm looking forward to getting more than one online match going at time!

Kung Fu Rabbit was my first Wii U eShop purchase. The game released at a low price of only $4.99, and being that it's a platformer game, I figured I would give it a try. I haven't beaten all the levels in yet, but have enjoyed my time with the game and have found it challenging. Kung Fu Rabbit is currently on sale on the Wii U eShop for only $2.49, and the sale ends tomorrow (Oct. 3rd).

LEGO City: Undercover is my September "Game of the Month", well, if I did "Game of the Month" awards! While I started playing LEGO City in August, it wasn't until September that I really put some time into the game. I ended up beating LEGO City: Undercover's story in September, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game. If you are even a little bit interested in LEGO City: Undercover for the Wii U, I would highly recommend you give the game a try. Unfortunately though, I encountered a serious issue with the game, that I'll be posting about separately. In short, if you get the game, make sure to plan on playing it and attempting to beat it within 90 days of purchasing it!

Toki Tori 2 received a big update in September, and after the update is now named Toki Tori 2+ on the Wii U eShop. After I updated the game, I played through a few more of the levels, and I am still really enjoying the game because it makes me think. Despite having only two basic moves to start (not sure if more are unlocked or found as you play), the levels and puzzles that I have encountered so far really show me the development team spent time being creative with putting the game together. Toki Tori 2+ will be a game I continue to play through, just slower than other games though due to its pacing and gameplay style. If you enjoy slower paced games, with puzzles that require you to think to progress through levels, you probably will want to check out Toki Tori 2+.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the game played for the first ever official "CoffeeWithGames Game Night". If you missed the posts about the CoffeeWithGames Game Night, you can read them HERE and HERE. While Black Ops II's online Wii U community may be small in numbers, there are many excellent players online and many have achieved the "Master Prestige" level. Amazon is still holding a sale on Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the Wii U, with its price down to $19.99 for those of you that might be interested in it.

Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed was randomly picked out of a stack of games by Bean 1 and requested for me to play, the very last day of September! I raced several races, on different tracks. I still enjoyed my time with this game, and should probably spend a bit more time beating the main mode and unlocking everything. I have said it before, and I'll say it again: I think the vehicle transformations with the track designs are brilliant! The way some of the tracks can change from lap to lap is something I would like to see in Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U, but I doubt that will go as far as this one.

Art Academy: Sketchpad found its way on our Wii U console in September. I wouldn't really classify this as a game, as much as a learning tool. I purchased this for Bean 1, because he has been drawing so much here recently, and I thought he might enjoy it and hopefully learn some things once they get lessons added. We haven't used it a lot yet, but the drawing/painting tools included are pretty impressive (speaking from a non-artist's perspective). If you're not familiar with this title, its description on the Wii U eShop reads: "Art Academy: Sketchpad is a robust art application that anyone can enjoy - from beginners to experts of all ages. Unleash your creativity using realistic stylus and touch screen-based controls. The tools at your disposal allow for an amazing level of detail. The huge variety of pencils, colored pencils, and pastels behave just like the real thing - with additional tools to further enhance your experience."

Pushover - This is a game I'm helping Phil, of SuperPhillipCentral, test out. He has put the game together for one of his classes, and I was able to first try it out late Monday night. Bean 1 was watching me as I played it, and if you're wondering if it left an impression on him, the very first thing he requested when he awoke from his deep non-coffee slumber on Tuesday was for me to fire up the game! I'm not sure if Phil has any plans to release what he has put together, but if you want to know more about it you may want to keep an eye on his site, HERE.

Rayman Legends just released last month, on September 3rd, with a MSRP of $59.99 on every major home console (360, PS3, Wii U). It's been less than a month since it released, and the game is now seeing its first major sale already.

The game was developed and published by Ubisoft, and received an ESRB rating of "EVERYONE 10+" with "Cartoon Violence, Comic Mischief" listed as content for parents and gamers to be aware of.

GameStop.com currently has Rayman Legends for the PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 on sale for just $39.99. You can see all the versions (including PC and PS Vita) of Rayman Legends listed HERE.

This is a quick post, to remind my fellow coffee drinkers that TODAY, September 29, 2013 is National Coffee Day!

If you are out and about on this fine day, there are a few coffee chains celebrating National Coffee Day (that's every day in our house, so not sure why it's only celebrated one day a year at these other places...for SHAME!), and you can get some free or discounted coffee drinks at some of them.

Here are a few coffee chains that are giving away free coffee today:
Caribou Coffee - Get a free small cup of Amy's Blend coffee. You need to print the coupon or show it on your mobile phone to get it.
Dunkin' Donuts - Get a free small coffee using the Dunkin' Donuts mobile app coupon.

FPS Friday! CoffeeWithGames Game Night - Black Ops II Wii U match footage

Well, it has been an interesting week. Sunday started off with the first official CoffeeWithGames Game Night playing some matches in Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the Wii U. Then Monday night I started working on putting together a video of one of the matches from the Game Night.

Before I digress into the video rendering issues I have experienced though, the video above is from the very first match of the CoffeeWithGames Game Night on Sunday. I believe it's also the very first video I have uploaded in 1080p, though I'm not very good at telling the difference between 1080p and 720p myself.

I have been using the Elgato Game Capture HD device since January of this year, and while I initially had some issues with rendering files out back in January in my video editing software, I quickly solved that problem. Then Monday happened. I tried rendering out one of the Black Ops II matches from the previous night, as I had done many times before with videos and trailer, but upon rendering the video out from the match, it became EXTREMELY blurry.

So, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and yesterday (Thursday), I randomly spent time trying to fix the rendering issues. Again, I now capture my gameplay videos using the Elgato Game Capture HD, but I edit them together using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0 edition, which is the video editing software I have used for pretty much the last 3 years.

No matter what I tried, how many times I re-recorded the match, re-rendered the video, it was always turning out extremely blurry after rendering the video. So, while my solution for what I HOPE is a permanent fix using Elgato video files with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD, I think that's for another post altogether.

If you watched the video above, you can see the match went pretty well for the team I was on. I was able to play for just over an hour, and got in several more matches in the game, all playing just regular Team Deathmatch battles. The first match was actually my best match in terms of my kill/death ratio for the night, but I enjoyed all of the matches.

So, while the first CoffeeWithGames Game Night was a success in terms of getting some matches in, being that a new Call of Duty will be releasing in just over a month now for the Wii U, I'm not sure how many more Black Ops II Game Nights there will be!

Yesterday, September 20, 2013, was the first day for the first official manufacturer's suggested retail price drop on the Wii U Deluxe Sets to take place. The Wii U system has been out less than a year now, releasing just last November in the U.S., and the Wii U Deluxe Set originally released with a MSRP of $349.99.

For those of you, unlike myself, that didn't buy a Wii U system when it released or before yesterday, you can now find at least two Wii U Deluxe Sets to buy at its new lower MSRP of only $299.99. There is the standard Wii U Deluxe Set bundled with Nintendo Land, and the newer Limited-edition Wii U Deluxe Set that comes with a digital eShop version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, the special customized Wind Waker HD Wii U GamePad, as well as a digital download copy of The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia. If you're looking for the White Wii U Basic Set though, apparently that one is going the way of an honest politician, and will probably become more difficult to find as a new product.

So, while the Wii U has now seen its first official MSRP drop, what about Wii U games that have been released? Well, some Wii U games have now apparently seen official price drops, some pretty significant price drops.

Brew yourself some coffee, and see if any of the following new Wii U games prices and deals stand out to you, and if you would recommend any of them to your fellow Wii U gamers!

The Brew
Assassin's Creed III is currently on sale for just $19.99. Assassin's Creed III released on the Wii U this last holiday season with a MSRP of $59.99, but the game has now seen price drops at Best Buy, GameStop, and Amazon.com with its new MSRP/list price being just $29.99. The Wii U version of Assassin's Creed III does feature Off-TV Play, which means the entire game can be played on just the Wii U GamePad. I enjoyed my time with the game, and I played the majority of my time with it using the Wii U's GamePad Off-TV Play feature. The game is currently on sale at many retailers, and you can grab it for under $20 right now at the ones I listed or linked above.

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes for the Wii U is currently on sale for just $28.26 with free shipping. The game released for the Wii U in May with a MSRP of $49.99, but has since seen its MSRP/list price drop down to $39.99 at Amazon.com, Best Buy, and GameStop. The Wii version of the game had close to 30 hours of gameplay averaged "Per person", when I reported on it in May. In the comments on that post, Jeremy from NintendoFuse confirmed LEGO Batman 2 for the Wii U, like Assassin's Creed III, does feature GamePad Off-TV Play.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for the Wii U can now be purchased for less than $20, new! Tekken Tag Tournament 2 released on the Wii U this last holiday season at a MSRP of $59.99, but the game now has a new MSRP/list price of just $19.99 at Best Buy and GameStop, and can be found for under $20 new on Amazon.com despite their list price for it still being $39.99. While the game released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 about 2 months prior to the Wii U version releasing, Namco did spend time adding in some exclusive Wii U features to the game, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on the Wii U does have GamePad Off-TV Play as well.

So, these are three Wii U games that at the very least offer Off-TV Play as an option with the Wii U GamePad, and all have seen price drops since they released, with Tekken Tag Tournament 2 getting the most significant price drop.

If you missed my CoffeeWithGames Game Night post earlier, I mentioned in it how Call of Duty: Black Ops II is currently on sale for just $19.99 at a few different retailers. I'm not sure how long the sale will last, maybe not even until tomorrow morning, but I did want to highlight that game being on sale again, even though it hasn't seen and official MSRP/list price drop just yet.

Based on my time with both Assassin's Creed III and Black Ops II, if you're a new Wii U owner and have been interested in either of those games, I would definitely recommend you give them a try at their current sale prices.

Announcing the first official, official CoffeeWithGames Game Night! While I have randomly played online games with some of you in the past, it wasn't always scheduled. Hopefully, with this new feature (mentioned last month), it will become more of a regular event and allow us to have fun gaming together!

Tomorrow night, Sunday, September 22nd at 11:30 PM EST, I will be hopping into Call of Duty: Black Ops II's online multiplayer on the Wii U, to play some Team Deathmatch battles!

Yo-ho-ho! Ahoy, again, me hearties! If ye didn't talk like a pirate yesterday, maybe ye played as one without even realizing what yesterday was!

Yesterday was Talk Like a Pirate Day, and me felt the need to play a game with a pirate.

Me received Rabbids Land for the Wii U from the sutlers at Ubisoft last year, and me fired it up again yesterday aft a while since playin' it, so that me could be chased by a pirate! If yar interested in Rabbids Land, smartly brew yerself up some of the finest fire-roasted black java beans around, and point yer deadlights below to see one of me favorite Rabbids Land mini-games!

The Brew
Rabbids Land was a Wii U launch title, and is a bit of a departure from other Rabbids games ye may be familiar with from the Wii. While Rabbids Land is multiplayer like other Rabbids based games, instead of allowing up to four players participate in simultaneous multiplayer mayhem, the Rabbids Land mini-games only allow 2 players to play simultaneously.

The original Rayman Raving Rabbids had Rayman in an arena playing through different mini-games in a story type mode, unlocking them as ye played them. In Rabbids Land though, ye must play a Board Game Trophy Race mode to unlock all the mini-games. It consists of 4 players (human or computer controlled) playing a board game that consists of rolling a die, moving to different squares around the board, and trying to win different mini-games and collecting trophies doing so. The first Rabbid to collect either 10 or 20 trophies (you pick how many at the beginning of the match), and get to the middle of the board wins the game.

Yar never sure which mini-games will happen while playing a board game match though, so ye will have to play several board game matches to unlock all the mini-games for the Treasure Hunt and Free Play modes. Anytime a new mini-game is played during a Board Game, it will be unlocked for the other modes. Took me more than 10 hours of playing it did, before me finally unlocked what me thinks is all the mini-games in Rabbids Land!

The game does have mini-games that make use of the Wii U's GamePad for some asymmetric gameplay in multiplayer though, and I think one mini-game in Rabbids Land that does the asymmetric gameplay very well is called The Pirate's Precious Jewels.

If the video wasn't clear enough for ye after watching the first time, this explanation may help ye understand more. If yar playing with two players, the player using the Wii U GamePad (Rabbid 1) has to plunder jewels while being chased by Rabbid 2. The person playing as Rabbid 2 on the TV (with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk), as a pirate ghost, is tasked with chasing down Rabbid 1 before they can plunder a certain number of jewels.

Rabbid 1 is invisible to Rabbid 2 though, but Rabbid 2 (the Pirate Rabbid) has a lantern they can use to help show them where Rabbid 1 is, if they get the lantern over Rabbid 1. Rabbid 2 cannot move while using the lantern to try and spot Rabbid 1, but Rabbid 2 does move more handsomely than Rabbid 1. So, even though the player with the GamePad can see Rabbid 2 at all times, Rabbid 1 constantly need be aware of where they be headed and how smartly the other Rabbid can move in on them!

If Rabbid 1 collects 15 jewels before time expires, they win! If Rabbid 2 catches Rabbid 1, or time expires in a round before 15 jewels have been plundered though, Rabbid 2 wins! This is a best 2 out of 3 mini-game, so ye have more than one chance to do it right!

Me hopes that was clearer than the mud of Davy Jones' Locker!

Caffeinated Thoughts
The Pirate's Precious Jewels is one of me favorite, if not me favorite, mini-games in Rabbids Land. Mixing concepts from what ye get from Luigi's Ghost Mansion and the Mario Chase mini-games in Nintendo Land, it really does provide for a frantic game of chase!

Maybe ye haven't played Rabbids Land, but ye are planning to start sailing on the Great Sea this very day on the Wii U with that scallywag Link? If so, and ye have purchased the new Wii U Wind Waker HD bundle and ye enjoy board game type video games, and ye have enjoyed the Rabbids in years past, ye may want to give Rabbids Land a look. Me do think that this would be an excellent title for the sutlers at Ubisoft to get a demo of up on the Wii U eShop, especially with the new Wii U bundle just releasing.

Yer mileage will vary with the game though, depending on if ye have others to play with and how much ye enjoy board game type games, and the Rabbids in general. Me played the majority of me time with the game, more than 13 hours so far, just by meself using the game's GamePad Off-TV Play feature.

Interview: Ripstone on Pure Chess Wii U & 2DS/3DS release plans, cross-platform play, & more! (Part 2)

Last week, I published the first part of an interview I had with Ripstone's Phil Gaskell regarding Pure Chess that will soon be heading to the Wii U and 3DS systems. In the first part of the interview, we covered whether Pure Chess has real-time online multiplayer, how many "Play By Mail" games the Wii U and 3DS versions will have compared to the PlayStation 3 version, and if either the Wii U or 3DS version would feature Trophies like what are in the PlayStation 3 version.

Now, are there any plans on releasing Pure Chess outside of European and North American eShops, perhaps in Japan and Australia? Is there any plan to update the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of Pure Chess to allow cross-platform play?

The Brew
CoffeeWithGames (CWG): While Pure Chess is currently scheduled for release before the end of the year, being that Ripstone and VooFoo are both in the United Kingdom, will the game see a simultaneous release on both the European and North American eShops?
Phil Gaskell (PG): There are some internal processes that the games with go through at both NOE (Nintendo of Europe) and NOA (Nintendo of America) so we'll be trying to keep the launches as close together as we can, but there may be a few days between.

CWG: Is there any plan on releasing Pure Chess Wii U and 3DS in Japan, or is it just currently planned for just Europe and North America (Australia too)?
PG: Right now the plan is to launch in Europe and North America. Translating the game into Chinese, Japanese, and other languages can take time so we'll look at taking the game over into territories like Asia and South America later.

CWG: The pricing structure of the mobile version really offers chess players some awesome choices, will the Wii U and 3DS versions of Pure Chess have a tiered pricing structure like the mobile version, or will it just be the "COMPLETE GAME PACK" option when those versions launch?
PG: The Wii U version will feature a similar tiered DLC approach to the PS3 and PS Vita versions. So gamers can expect to get the basic fully-featured game for a great price, and will be able to download optional chess sets. We're also exploring bundling options so we can offer the great value complete pack at some point too.

CWG: Is there any plan to update the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of Pure Chess to allow cross-platform play?
PG: We thought getting the big console platforms to open up and agree to cross-platform play would be difficult. We actually found it incredibly easy when we spoke to Nintendo, but it's going to be different from company to company. Sony are being equally open to the suggestion but as you can imagine, it's a busy time there with the launch of the new console. We're still discussing the feature with them and if they allow it rest assured we'll patch it in.

Caffeinated Thoughts
While Ripstone is thrilled about the upcoming Wii U price drop and new 2DS system (as am I), I am glad to see Ripstone and VooFoo supporting both Nintendo systems with Pure Chess. The fact they approached Nintendo with the idea of cross-platform play, and Nintendo not only said yes to the Wii U and 3DS cross-platform play, but also yes for allowing it with the Android/iOS version I think is awesome and really surprised me. I have been hearing more of how Nintendo is really trying to change the way they work with developers on their systems and listen to feedback, and I think this is just one more big example of Nintendo moving forward in a positive way.

While I haven't spent much time with Toki Tori 2 (now 2+) yet, I have enjoyed my short time with the game. Some of the puzzles I have already encountered really made me think, and the natural elements visual style reminds me of my backyard when I don't mow the grass as often as I should! It has a very nice, clean, crisp graphical style, that has been easy on my eyes. I do like the fact that Two Tribes has continued working to improve the game, based on feedback from players now many months after it released, as the trailer above showed. Hopefully the new update and current sale price will help get the game onto many more Wii U consoles this next week!

Call of Duty: Ghosts Trailer - Updated Wii U GamePad Version

Earlier this week, Activision released an "Official Call of Duty: Ghosts Single Player Campaign Trailer".

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the Wii U, as you can see here, here, and here, and I'm looking forward to seeing how some of the changes, like sliding, in Ghosts might change up gameplay and strategy in online multiplayer.

While Call of Duty: Ghosts will be releasing for the PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 5th, I am most interested in the Wii U version of the game. Why?

Well, there are multiple reasons, but the biggest reasons are Call of Duty: Ghosts' Wii U GamePad Off-TV Play feature, free online multiplayer, and the optional Wii Remote and Nunchuk controls for when my GamePad battery gets low.

I have updated the "Official Call of Duty: Ghosts Single Player Campaign Trailer", to show how I will most likely spend the majority of my time playing the game, showing the trailer on just the Wii U GamePad.

If you watched the original trailer, and my Wii U version of Call of Duty: Ghosts' latest trailer, you probably noticed I also updated the very end of it with some of the features Nintendo could use to help advertise the Wii U version of the game this holiday season.

While it is unclear still if Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Wii U will receive any DLC, being that I have never downloaded any DLC for any game (none that I can remember anyway), it isn't a huge issue for me, even though I do hope Nintendo will help get any DLC for Ghosts to the Wii U as well.

Pure Chess recently released for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android devices. The game has been developed by VooFoo and published by Ripstone. Last week, I posted an interview with Ripstone's Phil Gaskell about Pure Chess coming to the Wii U and 3DS, and you can read the first part of the interview, HERE.

What's the best part about the mobile release of Pure Chess though? It can be downloaded and enjoyed for an awesome low price of FREE.

You read that right, Pure Chess for iOS and Android devices can be downloaded for free. Is it worth downloading and using up the megabytes of required space though? In short, absolutely!

What will the free version of Pure Chess get you, as for choices of how to play a game of chess, and what does the Pure Chess "Complete Game Pack" offer content wise? Brew yourself some coffee, and hit the jump to see details of what you can expect from Pure Chess now on iOS and Android devices!

If you download Pure Chess, here are the features you will get in the basic free version:

1) Play Local - The ability to play one local chess game at a time on your Android/iOS device, against either a human or computer opponent.

a) This offers two difficult settings if you want to play against a computer opponent. Monkey AI is the lowest difficulty, and well, it's apparently like playing against a monkey. Monkey AI has been an excellent difficulty for showing Bean 1 how to play move different chess pieces around.

b) For those chess fans that enjoy timed matches, you also have the option of using a game timer if you would like. You can select to have it do a time limit per move, or you can select an incremental timer option.

2) Play Online - The ability to enjoy one online "Play By Mail" chess game at a time on your mobile device. This allows you to play other Pure Chess owners from around the world in chess matches, and I have already used this feature to play two online chess matches, against Matt and Chris from DigitallyDownloaded.net. It works extremely well, and even shows you the moves previously made in the match, so that you can remember what exactly was happening if you take a break from the game and come back a few hours (or, even days) later.

3) Chess Challenges - This area has two sections for players to use and improve their chess games: Bonus Games or a Tournament.
a) Bonus Games are where you try and get checkmate in a certain number of moves. The Bonus Games start with "Mate in 1" and go all the way up to "Mate in 5". With the free version, you have access to the first two problems under each one, for a total of 10 Bonus Games.
b) The Tournament section will allow you to play in a Beginners Tournament in the free version, but also has a Challengers Tournament and Masters Tournament.

4) Chess Set Pieces - The checker based chess pieces (seen in the image above) are the set pieces in the free version, with three appearances to choose from: wood, metal, or plastic.

5) Teaching - Under the "Learn to play" section there are 24 lessons which are very helpful for someone that perhaps has never played chess, or someone that has only played a few chess games and needs a refresher course. These lessons will show you the basic chess piece moves, and how to capture with the pieces as well. There are a few slightly advanced chess moves and rules not covered in the free version, such as castling, but you do get those extra lessons in the full version of the game, or even as a lower priced separate option if you're just looking to learn chess.

This is very simple. If you have ever enjoyed chess, or want to learn how to play chess, you should at the very least immediately go and download the Android or iOS basic free version of Pure Chess if you have a device that you can do it on:

Pure Chess' free basic version is like a coffee shop giving away a free small cup of coffee, and then charging a little for the extras. You can enjoy the deliciousness of the original brewed coffee, but if you perhaps enjoy your coffee drinks a little sweeter, you have all sorts of options.

If you don't want to buy the Pure Chess Complete Game Pack, no problem. You can pay for just the option(s) you want to make your chess experience, just a little bit sweeter.

What if you don't know much about chess and just want to learn more, without buying the full version? They give you the choice of buying just a Difficulty & Tutorial Upgrade, for $1.07. Want access to the extra checkmate puzzles and the harder, more advanced chess tournaments? You can buy the Challenge Upgrade for $1.07. Want the extra chess sets and locations? You can buy them individually.

Want to have the ability to play more than one local and online chess game at a time? You can buy the Multi-Game Upgrade, which only costs $1.07, allowing you to play up to 6 local and 6 online chess games without buying the full game.

If you want to go big though, and for example make your free small cup of coffee a large cup, you can certainly do so with the Pure Chess Complete Game Pack. While I am holding off for the Wii U version before making an initial purchase, I will go with the equivalent of the Pure Chess Complete Game Pack on the Wii U when the game releases.

Once I do get the Wii U version though, I will probably also go with the Multi-Game Upgrade option on the NOOK version I am currently using. Which, if you're not aware of what the NOOK HD+ Tablet is, it is an e-Reader based tablet device from the U.S. book retailer Barnes & Noble. From my own personal experience of playing chess in a coffee shop, if I was Barnes & Noble I would try to get Pure Chess downloaded to every single NOOK HD+ Tablet before it's sold, and help use that as a way to promote in store chess tournaments on their own device.

The Nintendo 2DS is releasing next month at a suggested retail price of $129.99, $40 less than the suggested retail price of the regular Nintendo 3DS. It is probably what we will end up getting Bean 1 this holiday season for Christmas, unless there is some other shiny new toy that turns up between now and then.

There are already a few games on my list to get Bean 1 eventually, if not day one, and between now and Christmas I'll be paying closer attention to 2DS/3DS deals. If you currently own a Nintendo 3DS, or perhaps are planning to grab a Nintendo 2DS this holiday season, below are some current Nintendo 3DS games that are at least 20% off their MSRPs or List Prices.

Caffeinated Thoughts
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is at the top of the list I have for Bean 1, with New Super Mario Bros. 2 close behind it. Bean 1 demoed Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for about 5 minutes at GameStop many months ago, and he still randomly requests to play the game.

I'm hoping that Nintendo of America and Amazon.com will get their systems situation worked out, and Amazon.com will start carrying Nintendo systems before this holiday season. Amazon does discount other game systems from time-to-time, and I think every penny helps. The $20 or $50 saved in the examples linked above would be enough to pick up an extra game or accessory.

Questions
Have any of you played and really enjoyed Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and think that a younger child would be able to play and beat it?

If you own a 3DS and have played any of the games listed, are there any you would/wouldn't recommend to new 3DS, or soon to be 2DS, owners?

Last week, I posted up the "What's a birthday without a gift? CoffeeWithGames turns 4!" post where I talked about what I had done on the site over the last 4 years, and what I plan to do moving forward with it. I was also giving away a CoffeeWithGames birthday gift of sorts, if you left some feedback on the post.

Dear Mr. Iwata, Please fix this Nintendo of America problem...

There are some people in the video game industry that like to place all the blame for Nintendo's current financial and Wii U situation on Mr. Iwata, the current CEO of Nintendo Company and now CEO of Nintendo of America as well. Some of those people deny that employees and management in other regions for Nintendo, like at Nintendo of America for example, might actually be part of Nintendo's overall problem as well though.

There is currently one Nintendo problem though, directly related to Nintendo of America's region, that I don't think Mr. Iwata made and might not even be aware that the problem exists. At least, I don't think he would have made this decision, based on one of his own more recent comments. It is a problem that Mr. Iwata now as CEO of Nintendo of America can hopefully address and get fixed though, for consumers and Nintendo investors.

What problem do I think Mr. Iwata as CEO of Nintendo of America should fix? Brew yourself some coffee, and keep reading to see!

The Brew
Dear Mr. Iwata,

When Nintendo launched the Wii U this past holiday season, it was first available in the United States. I was the first person to pre-order the Wii U at my local GameStop the day they opened up pre-orders on the system, and I have enjoyed my Wii U system and the games I have played on it so far.

What I don't understand though is why Nintendo of America has made the decision to not have the Wii U console available for consumers to buy DIRECTLY at its MSRP from Amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer.

If more and more U.S. consumers are doing holiday shopping online and shopping online in general, I think that Nintendo of America would have wanted the Wii U to be available DIRECTLY from the world's largest online retailer, Amazon.com, during its first holiday season. Unfortunately though, it appears that an employee at Nintendo of America kept that from happening.

Amazon's website for the United Kingdom sold the Wii U consoles DIRECTLY at launch, and still does. Amazon's website for Japan sold the Wii U consoles DIRECTLY to consumers at launch, and still does. Amazon's website for France sold Wii U consoles DIRECTLY to consumers at launch, and still does. Even Amazon's website for Canada sold Wii U consoles DIRECTLY to consumers at launch, and still does.

Amazon.com was the only major online retailer in the United States of America to not offer pre-orders or online purchasing of the Nintendo Wii U system this last holiday season. Still as of today (09/06/2013), Amazon in the United States does not DIRECTLY carry and sell the Nintendo Wii U to consumers at its MSRP. The Wii U system is only available from third-party vendors on Amazon in the U.S.A.

Even the new The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Deluxe Wii U Console Set is not available for pre-order or being sold directly from Amazon.com in the U.S., but Amazon in Canada is now taking pre-orders on it.

Nintendo of America has now missed out on almost a complete year of Wii U sales and advertising on Amazon.com. Giving up basically an entire year+ of sales on the world's largest online retailer in Nintendo's most important home console region, before the other consoles have even launched this holiday season, doesn't make common sense to me, much less business sense to me.

It isn't just the Nintendo Wii U Amazon.com doesn't carry and sell directly though, as the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo Wii systems have not been carried and sold at their MSRPs directly by Amazon.com in the U.S.A. for almost the last 2 years. I doubt right now that even the new Nintendo 2DS will be carried and sold by Amazon.com when it releases next month. This also extends beyond just Nintendo's consoles though, as Amazon.com does not even directly carry and sell the Nintendo eShop and/or Nintendo DSi/Wii Shop cards to consumers. What does this mean?

Sony has their PlayStation Network Cards and Microsoft has their Xbox LIVE digital cards being sold on Amazon.com, and those digital cards from Sony and Microsoft have remained in the "Top 100" section of the "Best Sellers in Video Games" for more than a year now in most cases, helping both companies to sell digital content from their online stores. Nintendo hasn't been doing that, for AT LEAST the last 2 years. Nintendo has apparently given up selling Wii U/3DS and Wii and DSi eShop cards to consumers on Amazon.com, and has therefore given up many digital sales that would translate from those cards being sold online.

Digital cards from Microsoft and Sony sold directly by Amazon.com ,
but not Nintendo eShop cards. Why?

Instead of grandparents, parents, husbands, wives, aunts, uncles, cousins, boyfriends, girlfriends, friends, etc., having the opportunity to buy Nintendo eShop cards as birthday gifts and holiday gifts for the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS owners, Nintendo doesn't give them a good option for that on Amazon.com. Instead of consumers being able to go to Amazon.com, finding a Nintendo eShop card at MSRP on somebody's Wish List and buying it for them as a gift, Nintendo has completely given up that side of potential digital retail sales to its competitors, and that is very odd to me.

I think that Nintendo has seen how important digital sales can be, and how profitable they are as well. Which is probably why Nintendo is now doing many more Nintendo Wii U eShop promotions, such as the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD early Wii U eShop download starting on September 20th.

So, why wouldn't Nintendo of America and Nintendo in general have the Nintendo eShop cards on the world's largest online retailer for consumers to buy? I think just as importantly though, if not more so, is if Mr. Iwata does not want to publish Nintendo developed games on the other consoles offered by Microsoft and Sony, then Mr. Iwata should make sure to keep Nintendo's own consoles in front of as many consumers as possible.

Again, why would Nintendo of America, or even Nintendo in general, not want to have the world's largest online retailer selling Nintendo systems directly to consumers at their MSRPs? It doesn't make any sense to me, especially if we are concerned about the long-term future and profits of Nintendo overall.

Which the last point is why don't I believe that you, Mr. Iwata, made the decision to cut ties with Amazon.com and not sell Nintendo systems in the U.S.A. directly from the world's largest online retailer to consumers at the MSRPs, in what has been Nintendo's strongest market for home consoles in recent years.

Mr. Iwata, you recently told ComputerAndVideoGames in an interview that you didn't want to concentrate just on Nintendo's short-term profits, but instead you are responsible for the long-term future of Nintendo as well. I would agree, and that's why I'm writing this directly to you.

If cutting ties with Amazon.com and not selling Nintendo consoles and eShop cards was a decision for the immediate short-term finances, it MIGHT make some sense, depending on the reason(s) behind the decision. But, if you are the Nintendo employee that has decided to not actively sell Nintendo eShop cards on Amazon's sites around the world though, can you please explain that decision?

Does not having all current Nintendo systems and Nintendo eShop cards sold directly to consumers at MSRPs by the world's largest online retailer make sense for the long-term future and profits of Nintendo? I don't think so, unless you think that Amazon.com isn't going to be around in 5-10 years, or that fewer consumers will be spending money on online purchases.

Whichever employee at Nintendo decided to cut ties with Amazon.com and not have Nintendo's Wii U and 3DS systems, and even the Nintendo eShop cards as well, sold directly from Amazon.com at their MSRPs, I think has done more financial harm than good for the company.

It makes no sense to me, with more and more consumers making purchases online, to have your most important region in recent years for home console sales, the United States, not offering the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems (and Nintendo eShop cards) directly from the world's largest online retailer at their MSRPs.

The current President of Nintendo of America, Mr. Fils-Aime, is aware of the Amazon.com situation, though he did not provide any details as to why the United States of America is the only country where Amazon's website does not directly sell Nintendo systems and Nintendo eShop cards at MSRPs to consumers, when he was asked about it last year.

If you, Mr. Iwata, were the one that made the decision to cut ties with Amazon.com before the Wii U launched and apparently shortly after the Nintendo 3DS launched, can you please explain to investors why you think this is a smart decision for the long-term future and profits of Nintendo? If you weren't the Nintendo employee that made this decision, can you please let investors know which employee made this decision and have them explain why it was made?

If you didn't make this decision and are going to try and fix it now that you are aware of it, contacting Amazon.com's CEO directly, Mr. Bezos, might be the best solution to finding out what exactly happened and why.

Mr. Iwata if you can fix the current Amazon.com situation in the United States and get Nintendo systems and Nintendo eShop cards on the site, I'm guessing there would be thousands of consumers (if not millions) to add them to their Amazon.com Wish Lists and/or purchase them this holiday season as gifts. Maybe you can even take it a step further, and allow developers to sell eShop codes for their games directly on Amazon.com, like what Nintendo has done for some Wii Virtual Console games in the past.

So, in short:
Dear Mr. Iwata,

Please fix this Nintendo of America problem with Amazon.com and get Nintendo systems and Nintendo eShop cards sold directly from the site at MSRPs, for consumers and Nintendo investors.

I don't understand why Nintendo of America has apparently chosen to burn its console bridge with Amazon.com, especially considering they had a new console release last year. While Microsoft and Sony both have been using Amazon.com to promote pre-orders for their new consoles and games releasing this holiday season, and their digitial promotion cards remain in the "Top 100", it seems like Nintendo of America is happy with consumers having fewer places to buy and see their products.

So, Nintendo of America had the worst Wii U launch ads, had the horribly run Best Buy E3 Wii U events speaking from experience, and doesn't have Nintendo systems and Nintendo eShop cards being sold at MSRPs directly by the world's largest online retailer?

Why? Maybe they need more coffee at Nintendo of America? Maybe they need to hire more staff? Maybe the staff needs to work less, and perhaps could use some vacation time? Whatever the case is, something seems off at Nintendo of America to me, and I'm not sure how aware of the situation Mr. Iwata is, being that he just became CEO of Nintendo of America this year.

Hopefully though, this issue will be fixed before this holiday season, and hopefully before the Wii U price drop later this month. If this is an issue you would like to see Mr. Iwata and/or management at Nintendo of America address, feel free to tweet this post to @Nintendo and @NintendoAmerica.
