The 2013 frog-themed cartoon t-shirt artwork for the Ohio Canal Corridor‘s annual Cuyahoga River cleanup event River Sweep.

Always a pleasure working with them and I feel I get better and better at doing limited palette t-shirt artwork each year. The theme of the illustration is the 100th anniversary Great Flood of 1913.

This jazz piano-playing dog cartoon character and logo was created for an independent musician looking to spice up his branding.

Initially I worked up a less-happy version of the jazz dog (see sketch below). Client wanted something more happy and fun to match his music style and personality (something he didn’t mention at the outset). He also wanted to drop the cigarette and ashtray, which makes sense considering the personality of the pooch.

Special thanks to my cartoonist buddy Pat Lewis who helped my name the dog (for the dog bowl gag). I wanted a name that was both a short dog-sounding name and a jazz musician sounding name. “Duke” hit the nail on the head.

Final sketch for the 2013 frog-themed t-shirt design for the Ohio Canal Corridor‘s annual Cuyahoga River cleanup volunteer initiative, River Sweep.

This year’s theme is based on the 100th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1913 which overwhelmed Cleveland, Ohio as well as any area of Ohio near the Cuyahoga River — or any river in Ohio and 14 other states for that matter. I’d never heard of this prior to Tim over at Ohio Canal Corridor informing me of this year’s theme. The Terminal Tower wasn’t yet built at the time of the flood, but we had to add it.

The text and color will be added at the next stage, once I create the final vector art in Adobe Illustrator. These designs are a fun challenge as silkscreen printing for t-shirts requires one to use a limited color palette. I feel like I’ve gotten better over the years with these. I was especially pleased with the Buddha Frog illustration for the 2011 River Sweep. I’m aiming for a similar approach when I color this year’s t-shirt artwork.

Sketch for a lumber jack bear cartoon character with a cartoon log cabin. Client wanted to emphasize that they built log cabins, so the bear was given the requisite flannel shirt, hand saw, toolbelt with hammer and construction helmet.

Color sketches for a bodybuilder gorilla with dumbbells cartoon character illustration project. The ape will be used as a mascot for a fitness gym in Australia (named “Jungle Gym”).

I’ve included the black and gray version of the color scheme below. I always find it odd that clients want gorillas to be “monkey brown”, when they are just not that color in real life. Or maybe they are, but they just aren’t that common if so.
