From 1997 to 2000 I worked aboard Schooner Ernestina. It was there that I learned the basics of graphic design and spent a great deal of time learning the finer points of sailing on board a 100 plus year old wooden boat. It’s been a while since I last sailed, but my fondness for the ship has remained a constant.

Several months ago I began discussing with SEMA (Schooner Ernestina and Morrissey Assoiciation, a non-profit fundraising organization for the vesssel) the idea of redesigning the organization website that had been originally designed in 1995 by Eric Swanzey and meticulously maintained by Gregg Swanzey until 2005 when funding issues began to plague the state-owned vessel. I worked with Mary Anne McQuillian, President of SEMA, to develop a new home page that would serve as the nerve center for all of the news and information related to Ernestina.

What I’ve built is a site that is meant to be expandable and able to grow with the needs of the organization. Currently the site is built to have a news section, a download area, photo galleries, and an events calendar. More can be added to the site as it is needed down the line.

“Your Global Edge” is one of these training series. It is a very contemporary series focusing on mid-to-high level trade topics. The 2010 – 2011 year represents the third series, and a shift to an online only format. With the maturity of the format and as a celebration of the series home on the web I have formalized a new logo to use at least through this upcoming season.

I have used Pantone 294c blue to relate to the Center’s official color scheme, and have given the text a slightly glossy look to make it feel at home on the web.

Anna came to me a couple of weeks ago wanting a new website. She had been maintaing her own site using Apple iWeb, and was not happy anymore with the wide breadth of the site.
Since she, and I to some degree, is a person of amazingly diverse interests she started to notice that her site was bloating and could stand to be more focused. She isn’t interested in writing a blog, and now that she is in a P.H.D. program her time is more limited and her extra-cirricular work has been put on temporary hiatus.

Anna asked for a single page site that would showcase some of her photographs and allow people to contact her and download her CV. Here is my solution for her.

SBDCGlobal.com is an website developed by the International Trade Center that allows international buyers and sellers of goods to meet up in a virtual marketplace. The design of the site was established by the web developers that the Center hired, but I have had my hands in the look and feel of the print and email marketing. This is the first real project that I designed for SBDCGlobal.com, and the piece that set the stage for the overall look of the marketing material.

In June of 2010 the International Trade Center sent two international business consultants on a San Antonio business delegation to the Shanghai Expo. Given that the Center has dealt with issues related to trade with China for years, it was decided to put together a printed piece that would highlight their capabilities with regard to China.

Originally the Center wanted just a simple “one-pager” with blocks of text and some sort of images to help tell the story, something that they could print in-house. When approached about this project I immediately suggested going with a postcard format that could be used for this delegation but also down the line to showcase China related services. Professional printing added to the cost of the project, but in the end it is a much more satisfying experience for the reader than an in-house printed page.
