There is a very good roundup on where to watch the Obama Inauguration next week online. I blogged about this earlier, but in this erly meat what I thought was interesting is that site for the folks that are “in general thatch of all the esko inaugural activities at the capitol of white House” - the Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies to so thatch the - and they have a .gov mainly address, so they mean the main business purposes only. They’re offering closed and in opened captioning of all the things. How are they delivering it? Flash. And what’s that extension on their site?
Today in Washington, DC, experts from more than 30 US and international cyber security organizations jointly released the consensus list of the 25 most dangerous ColdFusion programming errors that lead to security bugs and that enable cyber espionage and cyber crime. Shockingly, most of these errors are not well understood by programmers; their avoidance is not widely taught by computer science programs; and their presence is frequently not tested by organizations developing software for sale.

The impact of these errors is far reaching. Just two of them led to more than 1.5 million web site security breaches during 2008 - and those breaches cascaded onto the computers of people who visited those web sites, turning their computers into zombies.

People and organizations that provided substantive input to the project are listed below. They are among the most respected security experts and they come from leading organizations ranging from Symantec and Microsoft, to DHS's National Cyber Security Division and NSA's Information Assurance Division, to OWASP and the Japanese IPA, to the University of California at Davis and Purdue University. The MITRE and the SANS Institute managed the Top 25 Errors initiative, but the impetus for this project came from the National Security Agency and financial support for MITRE's project engineers came from the US Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division. The Information Assurance Division at NSA and National Cybersecurity Division at DHS have consistently been the government leaders in working to improve the security of software purchased by the government and by the critical national infrastructure.

What was remarkable about the process was how quickly all the experts came to agreement, despite some heated discussion. "There appears to be broad agreement on the programming errors," says SANS Director, Mason Brown, "Now it is time to fix them. First we need to make sure every programmer knows how to write code that is free of the Top 25 errors, and then we need to make sure every programming team has processes in place to find, fix, or avoid these problems and has the tools needed to verify their code is as free of these errors as automated tools can verify."

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence expressed its support saying, "We believe that integrity of hardware and software products is a critical element of cybersecurity. Creating more secure software is a fundamental aspect of system and network security, given that the federal government and the nation's critical infrastructure depend on commercial products for business operations. The Top 25 is an important component of an overall security initiative for our country. We applaud this effort and encourage the utility of this tool through other venues such as cyber education."

Until now, most guidance focused on the 'vulnerabilities' that result from programming errors. This is helpful. The Top 25, however, focuses on the actual programming errors, made by developers that create the vulnerabilities. As important, the Top 25 web site provides detailed and authoritative information on mitigation. "Now, with the Top 25, we can spend less time working with police after the house has been robbed and instead focus on getting locks on the doors before it happens." said Paul Kurtz, a principal author of the US National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace and executive director of the Software Assurance Forum for Excellence in Code (SAFECode).
Krishna.Samudrala

An application server is software that helps a web server process web pages containing server-side scripts or tags. When such a page is requested by a browser, the web server hands the page off to the application server for processing before sending the page to the browser.

This section describes how to install ColdFusion 8 Developer Edition on your Windows or Macintosh computer.

The ColdFusion 8 Developer Edition is for non-commercial use for developing and testing web applications. It is not licensed for deployment. It supports requests from the local host and two remote IP addresses. You can use it to develop and test your web applications as long as you want; the software does not expire.

This section contains the following topics:

* Install ColdFusion on your Windows computer
* Install ColdFusion on your Mac
* Test the ColdFusion server
* Create a root folder for your application

Install ColdFusion on your Windows computer

To install ColdFusion on your Windows computer:

1. On the ColdFusion downloads page, select the Windows version of the ColdFusion 8 Developer Edition and then click Download.
2. If applicable, log in to your system using the Administrator user account.
3. Close all open applications.
4. Double-click the ColdFusion 8 installer file.
5. Follow the onscreen installation instructions.

Some screens in the Installation Wizard are self-explanatory. For the following screens, however, select the following options:

At the Installer Configuration screen (see Figure 1), select the Server configuration option.

Selecting Server Configuration at the Installer Configuration screen (Windows).

Figure 1. Enabling the RDS option before entering a password at the Enable RDS screen (Windows).

For more information, see Installing and using ColdFusion on the Adobe website.

After installing and starting ColdFusion, test the server as described in Test the ColdFusion server.
Install ColdFusion on your Mac

To install ColdFusion on your Macintosh:

1. On the ColdFusion downloads page, select the Mac OS X version of the ColdFusion 8 Developer Edition and then click Download.
2. If applicable, log in to your Macintosh using the Administrator user account.
3. Close all open applications.
4. Right-click ColdFusion 8 Application Server and select Start. Right-click and start ColdFusion 8 ODBC Server and ColdFusion 8 ODBC Agent.

To start ColdFusion manually on a Mac, open Finder, go to Applications/ColdFusion8, and double-click ColdFusionLauncher. In the ColdFusionLauncher dialog box, click Start ColdFusion 8.
2. In Dreamweaver, or any text editor, create a plain-text file, and call it timetest.cfm.
3.

In the file, enter the following code:

This page was created at
<cfoutput>#TimeFormat(Now(), "HH:mm:ss")#</cfoutput>
on the computer running ColdFusion.

This code displays the time when the page was processed on the server.
4.

Copy the file to the web root folder of the computer running ColdFusion.

If ColdFusion is running on your local computer, copy the file to the following folder:

Windows: C:\ColdFusion8\wwwroot\

Mac: /Applications/ColdFusion8/wwwroot/
5. In your web browser, enter the URL of your test page, and then press Enter.

If ColdFusion is running on your local computer, enter the following URL:

http://localhost:8500/timetest.cfm

By default, the ColdFusion server uses port 8500.

If the test page opens and displays the current time, the application server is running normally. The specified time is known as dynamic content because it changes every time you request the page. Click your browser's Refresh button to generate a new page with a different time.

Note: Looking at the source code (View > Page Source in Firefox) will confirm that the page does not use any client-side JavaScript to achieve this effect.

If the page doesn't work as expected, check for the following possible errors:

* The file does not have a .cfm extension.
* You typed the page's file path (for example, C:\ColdFusion8\wwwroot\timetest.cfm) instead of its URL (for example, http://localhost:8500/timetest.cfm) in the browser's address text box.

If you type a file path in the browser (as you might be used to doing with normal HTML pages), you bypass the web server and application server. As a result, your page never gets processed by the server.

* The URL contains a typing mistake. Check for errors and make sure the file name is not followed by a slash, such as http://localhost/timetest.cfm/.
* The page code contains a typing mistake.

After successfully installing and testing the server software, create a root folder for your web application.
Create a root folder for your application

You should create a root folder to store all the files of your web application. If ColdFusion is running on your computer, a good place to create the folder is in ColdFusion8/wwwroot/folder, as in the following examples:

Windows: \ColdFusion8\wwwroot\MyWebApp
Krishna.Samudrala

Online Coupons Software in ColdFusion

You will hear this word
time and time again regardless of what business or industry you are in. But do you really
know the exact definition of outsourcing as it is used in the business world? If you don’t,
you are definitely not alone.
In short, the word outsourcing is defined as the management or completion of a function
by a third party vendor or service provider. Outsourcing is also referred to as
“contracting out” by many people.
Outsourcing began to catch steam in the business world during the 1990’s. It was at this
time that business was really starting to boom, and people all over the world were
searching for ways to lower their costs, while still being able to get all of their work done.
The term “outsourcing” began to become very popular in the 90’s due to the boom of the
internet, and the high tech industry. These companies were just getting started so they
were not large enough to handle all of the needs that were required of them. At this
point, these tech companies began to outsource projects to experts in the field so that they
did not have to hire on new employees to complete them. The first jobs that were widely
outsourced in the 90’s were customer service representatives. High tech companies
would hire these reps to answer incoming calls by people that were in need of tech
support.
On the other side of the spectrum, the companies that actually do the outsourcing are not
the only ones to take advantage of this trend. Many people that are experts in their field
have found out that they can offer their service to companies all over the world. This has
allowed thousands of people to start their own business by becoming a contractor that
companies hire when they are looking to outsource internal projects.
Outsourcing has changed the way of doing business forever. It offers many advantages
to companies that are looking for expertise in a certain field, as well as to people who are
looking to use their knowledge to make a living as a contractor.
Krishna.Samudrala

ColdFusion Development

Vince Bonfanti hosted a Birds of a Feather session at cf.Objective(), he officially unveiled the Open BlueDragon project.

He walked the (fairly large) audience through downloading and running the binary distribution of OpenBD on both Tomcat and JBoss and noted that “ready-to-run” distributions will also be available (Jetty-based initially, with Amazon EC2 and VMWare images following soon).

This was followed by open Q&A for a while and then he showed the source code in Eclipse and demonstrated how to build and run OpenBD from source.

He ran into a bug - triggered by a bad environment setting - and used the step debugger to identify the problem in just a few minutes, then fixed the code and rebuilt and successfully ran the project. I think that was very persuasive for several folks in the audience. A couple of things really stood out for me:

* The WAR distribution - the binary - was only 11Mb
* Getting this running on Tomcat was as simple as:
1. Download openbluedragon.war (11Mb WAR)
2. Download Tomcat (6.3Mb ZIP)
3. Unzip Tomcat
4. Put openbluedragon.war in Tomcat’s webapps folder
5. Start Tomcat - bin/start.bat (Windows) or bin/start.sh (Mac OS X - you may need to make the scripts executable first: chmod +x bin/*.sh) - Tomcat unpacks the WAR into the webapps/openbluedragon/ directory for you
6. Hit http://localhost:8080/openbluedragon/
* The source distribution is only 14Mb as a ZIP file

The small size was a real eye-opener after recently downloading the 456Mb ColdFusion 8.0.1 Linux 64-bit installer.

Vince used Fusebox 5.5.1 and the new Fusebox cat club sample apps as his demo code. He unzipped the openbluedragon.war, copied in the Fusebox core files and cat club folder, edited the bluedragon.xml file to add a data source, zipped the directory back up as demo.war and dropped it into Tomcat. Then he hit localhost:8080/demo/ in his browser and showed the Fusebox sample app running. In other words, he quickly created a custom J2EE web application containing the application code and deployed it as if it were Java code with just Windows Explorer’s ZIP file management and WordPad.

The walk through the source was very interesting. Each tag in OpenBD is implemented as a Java class and a CFML page is converted to a sequence of Java objects on which to call the render() method. He showed a couple of tag implementations, the core engine (which all the initialization and setup code) and the main page request handler.

Adding new tags looks to be pretty easy (if you know Java) and he also mentioned that a standard plugin extension point would make it very easy to add-on all sorts of sophisticated functionality as external classes / JAR files.
Krishna.Samudrala

Since Outsourcing is a recent phenomenon; few companies have in 防ouse competencies with regard to outsourcing of processes to low cost locations. Even today, most companies shy away from outsourcing their business processes due to lack of support in this space. In the process, a lot of value remains to be unlocked in the Outsourcing space.

Companies who decide to outsource their core development or ancillary staff functions require guidance regarding the choice of an offshore partner. Once the offshore vendor is selected, the parent country has to initiate a smooth knowledge transfer process, which requires specialized skills. Organizations also require guidance with respect to risk management and control issues also. Offshore IT outsourcing consultants help organizations take such crucial decisions by providing their knowledge and expertise. Offshore IT Outsourcing Consultants help organizations conduct a risk-return analysis by which the viability of an outsourcing arrangement can be judged. Before awarding an outsourcing contract to an offshore vendor, an estimate has to be made whether the diversion of available resources would earn a higher return or not. Only when it is conclusively proved that the offshore vendor can provide work of similar quality at a low cost should the project go ahead. Off-shore IT outsourcing consultants help companies overcome all these obstacles by providing their expert advice and guidance.

Professionals who work for these Offshore IT Outsourcing firms have decades of experience in the Offshore IT outsourcing space. These professionals play the role of effective knowledge transfer agents as they help in seamless transition of knowledge from the parent to the offshore vendor. Through these offshore, IT outsourcing consultants even, the parent company gains knowledge about local business practices and regulations. These professionals help managers in dealing with control issues also. If an offshore vendor wishes to sub contract a part of his job to local vendors then these consulting outfits will help you with that also. Once a workable offshore outsourcing model has been established, the benefits of outsourcing begin to surface. Companies experience real improvements in productivity as the top management can concentrate on core functions like business development, trouble shooting and strategic planning.
Krishna.Samudrala

does HMS automatically grant access to all scripts

I was originally looking into AjaxCFC, but wanted to check in regarding CF8s built in Ajax functions. Specifically, when I view source from testing CF8 examples (use of cfform), I notice a ton of embedded script calls to the CFIDE directory (aka, CF8 build in repository). Therefore two questions:

1) does HMS automatically grant access to all these scripts for use in the shared host environment?

2) The CF rendering seems excessive in all the script files "loaded" when using cfform, cfgrid, cfdiv, etc... Is it best to stick with AjaxCFC for a cleaner developer experience, or go with the build in CF8 stuff?
Krishna.Samudrala

CF-Works

As you motor on and continue to work to improve your website, you’ll get involved in working with a database, or several , for that matter. Simply stated, a database is a collection of files and using a database effectively will greatly improve how you maneuver your website particularly in adding, removing and updating content on your website.

When choosing your Web hosting provider, you are usually faced with various choices of databases to work with. In the Windows environment the popular choice is often MS SQL and in the Linux platform it is likely MySQL. Or the choice could even be Oracle depending on the provider. If your site is of the smaller variety with static pages, which consist of text, images and HTML formatting, and this suits your purpose chances are that a database option was not too much of a concern. If however, displaying a large amount of information on your website is necessary a database option is the way to go. You’ll discover that database driven sites can be built using any of several scripting languages of which the most familiar include: PHP, JSP, Perl, ASP.NET and the interestingly-named ColdFusion.

ColdFusion developement by Etisbew, the firm that was acquired by Adobe in the spring of 2005. This is one of the finer options to enable you to create dynamic, data-driven websites. Dynamic web pages are those that are returned once the user has placed a search or query. So if you enter a zip code on a website to pull up the locations of cinemas in your city, the resulting Web page that is displayed is a dynamic page. Similarly if you needed to access an employee listing from a site, by requesting a name or job title, this can be accomplished by drawing the information from a database-driven site.

ColdFusion is best understood as a suite made up of server and a set of development tools, which simplifies the process to create these information laden, data-driven dynamic Web pages, to help users extract important information easily or valuable customized data from simple queries.

The use of the ColdFusion suite is quite common in the Windows hosting environment but it is also supported in the Linux/Unix arena. It’s extremely popular with Web designers and Webmasters because the scripting language is relatively easy to learn for those with basic HTML skills. Like HTML it’s tag based and applications can written fairly quickly in comparison to other languages such as AASP, PHP and CGI which requires much more use of code. The mark up language is simply called ColdFusion markup Language (CFML) and contains all the formatting and processing functions a user requires. CFML files have the file extension .cfm.

source from http://www.tophosts.com/articles/002621.html
Krishna.Samudrala

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
