What makes for a great storyline that stand the test of time, copied and refocused and is transformed into another great storyline that will have implications for future generations? A great creative team. They must not only mold their vision but they must also look to the past for inspiration and to the future to envision their long lasting effects.

I’m talking about the Avengers: Kree-Srull War (Avengers #89-97, 1971-1972) by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams (among others). Thomas took the best part of what Stan Lee and Jack Kirby did in the pages of Fantastic Four and created what would turn out to be the first “event” of the Marvel Age of Comics. Even though it was self contained in the Avengers title, it featured a multitude of characters including Captain Mar-vell, Rick Jones, The FF, The Inhumans, and Nick Fury and villains such as Ronan The Accuser and The Super-Skrull. Not only did it establish just where Earth stands in the universe (literally) but also how far humans have come and where they will eventually end up on the evolutionary scale. Minor plot points have lasted into today’s books, as well. The seeds of the relationship with The Vision and Scarlett Witch started here and Infinity Gauntlet series, The (Marvel) Illuminati, Secret Invasion and Annihilation events were based off of this story.

I picked this to read for this past Saturday’s Read Comics In Public Day. I wanted to choose something special and that I have never read before. I pulled out Marvel Masterworks Volume 10 and brought it on a weekend vacation with my family. I’m so glad that I finally got around to reading it. It’s important to delve into history and read the greats. More on my thoughts of this in the podcast.

Sometimes the unexpected happens and you need help ASAP – or even sooner.
For some reason or another the RSS feed for the Collected Comics Library Blog went out of wack and I had no idea on how to fix it. I went and used the WC3 Feed Validation tool, but all I was getting was 500 and parsing errors.
So I went over to Twitter and within minutes I got responses – both @ChrisCCL and DM’s – to help me with my problem.
My good friend Derek Coward, Comic Book Noise, came to my rescue and it turns out that my Feed was allocating to many blog posts (500!) and thus screwing everything up. My sincere thanks to Derek (and everyone).

Lesson Learned: Forget Forums and even Google searches when needing help. Go Straight to Twitter and a friend will help you out.

The name Neal Adams has been synonymous with comic books for decades. He has spent the majority of his career with DC and in recent years they have celebrated his work with the release of Batman Illustrated Volumes 1-3, Superman Kyrptonite Nevermore, DC Universe Illustrated Volume 1 (projected to be 3 volumes) and the upcoming Superman Vs. Muhammad Ali HC (November).
Adams has worked on just about every character in the DCU including working on several War genre stories. One of those characters has been Superman and today I go over as to what could be a Superman Illustrated by Neal Adams Volume 1.

Also on today’s show is recap of last week’s Women of Marvel Comics blog posts including who was left out (Rogue) and who I should have added in (Red Sonja).

Digital Comics Review

Not every female heroine in the Marvel Universe needs to have superpowers (you may recall that I added in Lois Lane when I did my Real Power of the DCU). Mary Jane Watson was created, that is to say in name and legs only, by Steve Ditko in Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #25 (June 1965). John Romita Sr. made her famous with her good looks, charm and that wonderful quote, “Face it, Tiger… you just hit the jackpot!” in Amazing Spider-Man #42 (November 1966). She always had a suspicion that Peter Parker was Spider-Man and it was confirmed in Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #257. She married Peter in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21, but the marriage has been wiped (Amazing Spider-Man #545, Spider-Man: One More Day) and thanks with the deal struck with Mephisto they only dated.

She was portrayed by Kirsten Dunst the Spider-Man trilogy.

Ororo Munroe first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (May 1975). Storm was one of the first black comic book characters, and the first black female, to play either a major or supporting role at either Marvel of DC. At times she has been a leader of the X-Men. She can control the elements of weather including temperature, and raising lightning, tornadoes, and wind storms. Storm is the queen of Wakanda and is married to King T’Challa, Black Panther.

Jean Grey is an Omega-level mutant, and is one of the physical hosts of the Phoenix Force. She is an original X-Men (as Marvel Girl) and first appeared in X-Men #1 (1963). She has been a staple in the X-Universe and has had multiple storylines. She married Cyclops (Scott Summers) and has a daughter Rachel Summers (current Marvel Girl), son Nate Grey (X-Man) and a stepson Cable. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

She was portrayed by Famke Janssen in the X-Men trilogy.

Elektra is the world’s most lethal assassin – male or female – and she is one of the most popular heroines in the Marvel Universe. She was created by Frank Miller and first appeared in Daredevil #168 (January, 1981), where she became a love interest of the title character. Controversy arose with Elektra, not only because she was brutally murdered by Bullseye in Daredevil #181, but because she was resurrected by editors and writers at Marvel, something that Miller had no intension of ever doing.

She was portrayed by Jennifer Garner in the 2003 film Daredevil and its 2005 spinoff, Elektra.

Soviet-spy, Natasha Romanoff, first appeared with Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #52 (April 1964), although her trademark skintight black costume didn’t appear until The Amazing Spider-Man #86 (July 1970). She’s had several solo adventures and team-ups over the years and she’s even been a member of The Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and The Champions. Her most famous collaboration has been with Daredevil beginning with Daredevil (vol. 1) #81. More recently Black Widow has become a member of Steve Rogers black-ops wing of the Avengers, dubbed the Secret Avengers.

She was portrayed by Scarlett Johansson in the 2010 film Iron Man 2 and will also be in The Avengers come 2012.

Let’s start off with Susan Storm Richards of the Fantastic Four (aka Invisible Girl and Invisible Woman). She first appeared in Fantastic Four #1 in November 1961, and was the first female superhero created by Marvel in the Silver Age of Comics. She’s the brother of Johnny Storm the Human Torch and the wife of Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic and have been the desire of many men including Namor and Dr. Doom. Over the years her powers have changed and grown and is now considered the most powerful (and sometimes dangerous) of the FF.

Let’s take a look at some of her collected editions:

It was no surprise that Digital Comics was the talk of San Diego last month at Comic Con 2010. The majors like DC, Marvel and IDW and smaller publishing houses like Top Shelf and Boom! Studios all made
announcements. The business of Digital was also discussed on several panels, and booths hosted by distribution companies like ComiXology, Graphic.ly, PanelFly, iVerse (Comics+) and Long Box Digital were all busy showing off the latest apps. Today on the podcast, I talk about this new comic book reprint form and get you caught up with the latest news.

As some of you know I started a Digital Comics blog called DGTL Comics not too long ago. Unfortunately I have not had the time to devote to it. I even wanted to do a weekly podcast, but other activities have hindered me to really do much of anything. However there is some good news to come out of this. First, the DGTL Comics Twitter feed will still be going strong, so be sure to follow that for easy links. Second, I’m going to start guest blogging at Digital Comics Review very soon and perhaps I’ll be posting a podcast with industry leaders and passionate fans. Lastly, I’ll be adding a Digital Comics news feature to the Collected Comics Library Podcast on a regular basis. Three great ways to keep up to date with Digital.

Getting back to what I know best – there is some printed Collected Edition news including an update on the delayed Captain Marvel Monster Society of Evil, historian Rick Marschall and Rosebud Archives have teamed up with Fantagraphics for a new line of books and DC Comics restructures the Earth One GN line before it even gets started, all this and the New Releases of the Week.

It’s nothing big but it caught my eye nonetheless. Both Fantagraphics and IDW are publishing retrospectives on the work of Alex Toth.

Reading the official solicitaions I gather the the IDW book will be more of an art book and the Alex Toth at Standard Comics book looks to be more like the Steve Ditko Archives (Fantagraphics). I’m a big fan of the late, great Toth and any chance to see his work is OK in my book.

But here’s the intestesting part, this is the second time that IDW and Fantagraphics published a retospective on the same person. You may recall that Steve Ditko was chosen to be the subject not too long ago.

It’s hard to name many people who have both excelled in the TV and Comic Book industry, but one name instantly comes to mind: J. Michael Straczynski. From his creation and success on Babylon 5 to his epic run on Amazing Spider-Man and he reintroduction to Thor at Marvel, JMS has successfully crossed the line and has become on of the best writers in the medium. Recently he has made the move to DC Comics where he is guiding both Superman and Wonder Woman into a new era. We go over his comic book collected editions and reprints today. I was surprised to find out that just about everything he has done is collected! Don’t forget his other Superman work due in October, Superman: Earth One which is a re-imagination of Kal-El coming to Earth in 2010.

If any of you followed me on Twitter today, you would have seen that there is an issue with the forthcoming Frank Frazetta White Indian collected edition.

Back in March the Frazetta estate entered into an agreement with Vanguard Productions and even launched the Vanguard Frazetta Classics.  Two books have been announced: Vanguard Frazetta Classics Series Volume 1:  The Complete Johnny Comet, and the Vanguard Frazetta Classics Series Volume 2: The Complete White Indian Collection.

That’s all well and good but just days ago Dark Horse released their October solicitations which included thier own The Classic Comics Archives Vol 1: The White Indian.

Very odd indeed. So I wrote J. David Spurlock of Vanguard and this is what he had to say, I just got off the phone with Mike Richardson at Dark Horse. I expect that we will issue a joint press release later but basically, Vanguard will release WHITE INDIAN Vol 1: By Frazetta, and Dark Horse will do WHITE INDIAN ARCHIVES Vol 2 of all all the other White Indian material.

That must have been some phone call.

Spurlock had previously stated that, “(White Indian is) well into production now with more Vanguard volumes to come.”  So it’s no surprise that it’ll will be publishing the first book. But I wonder how this problem even came about. I know that Dark Horse does have some rights to the Frazetta estate (they will be publishing the Thun’da, King of the Congo Archives), but Image also has reprint rights. Perhaps they want a piece of the action, too?

In any event, it will be good to have this material reprinted. I’ll post more information as it comes available.

And thanks to Rich Johnston, Bleeding Cool,  for reminding me about the Frazetta v. Vangurad/Spurlock lawsuit. Very interesting.

As most of you know, I’m a co-host on the Comic Book Page Podcast with John Mayo. Each month John and I discuss the Top 300 Graphic Novels and Collected Edition Sales Estimates as reported by Diamond Comics Distributors. One thing that has caught my attention over the years has bee the increasing number of comic book adaptations of original prose novels there have been – and how well they sell. This is really nothing new however, Tarzan and Conan novels have been adapted and there was even the great Classic Illustrated Series. More recently Roy Thomas and Marvel brought back that title and even expanded their line of comics with the Best Selling Author series which includes Stephen King’s The Stand. Boom Studios! is also in the mix with Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? the basis for Blade Runner. But there is one contemporary title title that we have yet to see: Harry Potter. As I explain in today’s podcast, now that Marvel is owned by Disney and the final Potter movie is set to be released (Part One this Christmas and Part Two next summer) it would be the perfect time to announce this monumental project at this years Comic Con. Do it now while Potter fever is still hot. At the biggest stage in the world declare to the biggest fanboy audience in the world it and introduce committed team of artists and writers, have J.K. Rowling oversee the entire creative process, make it at least a 100 issues series covering all seven books. It would be one of, if not, the biggest projects to come out of San Diego this year.

The June 2010 Comic Book Sales Figures Estimated (Comics Sold to North American Comics Shops as Reported by Diamond Comic Distributors) were recently released and as far as the Trade Paperbacks and Collected Editions go Batman Arkham Asylum: Madness HC came in at #1. Let’s a take a look at the Top 10. As usual, I’ll be sitting down with John Mayo on his Comic Book Page Podcast, to go over these numbers and more very soon.

Top Selling Collected Editions (Trade Paperbacks, Hardcovers and Graphic Novels)

1. Batman Arkham Asylum: Madness HC ($19.99, DC) – In the wake of the other Batman OGN, Joker by Brian Azzarello, author Sam Keith lets you walk inside Arkham Asylum for 24 hours. Looks like it’s paying off.
2. Chew Volume 2: International Flavor TP (MR) ($12.99, Image) – The sleeper hit of last summer isn’t a sleeper anymore. Time to catch up on the book that everyone else is reading.
3. Hellboy Volume 10: The Crooked Man & Others TP ($17.99, Dark Horse) – Hellboy is one of those unique titles that sell well in monthly and trade form. My preferred way these days are the Hardcover Library Editions.
4. Naruto Volume 48 TP ($9.99, Viz) – I don’t know one person (online or real world) who buy these books. But then again I don’t know many teenagers these days.
5. Final Crisis TP ($19.99, DC) – I love the red skyline of Detroit in the opening pages. Boy, did DC get it right. Looks like every October 30 from 1975-1987.
6. Batman: R.I.P. TP ($14.99, DC) – I haven’t read this title yet, but I think I’ll catch up with Batman with this trade.
7. Jonah Hex: No Way Back HC ($19.99, DC/Vertigo) – I’m guessing that more people will buy this book then who liked the movie.
8. DMZ Volume 8: Hearts And Minds TP (MR) ($16.99, DC/Vertigo) – Another series that I should sit down and read one of these days. Is it on the iPad, yet?
9. Jack Of Fables Volume 7: The New Adventures Of Jack & Jack TP (MR) ($14.99, DC/Vertigo) – If the word Fables is on the list you can usually find it in the Top 10 every month – trade or hardcover. There’s a damn good reason for that.
10. Criminal Volume 5: Sinners TP (MR) ($15.99, Marvel/Icon) – I picked up the giant Criminal hardcover last year and I loved every single page of it. If you have not tried this title yet you are really missing some of the best comic book work on the market today.

Wonder Woman #600 came out last week and the comic community, the internet and even ABC News is all a buzz about her new costume change. I think it’s a good move not only for the character, but to get people talking about comics in general. I’m sure the debate will go right into Comic Con. I do have a feeling that Diana Price will return to her original one piece outfit someday because we have seen it before back in 1968 when Diana and all of the Amazons lost their magic and became for the most part – mortal. Diana wore a Mod-type outfit and learned Kung-Fu in the process. It actually made her a stronger and more interesting character. But that only lasted 30 odd issues before she went back to the red, blue and gold bustier that we all know her for. I’m sure that’s what DC is doing again – rehashing what came before – new outfit, new attitude and old numbering system.

Today’s show is no different. I covered the Wonder Woman Archives way back for Podcast #4. You can listen to it if you want but I warn you that the audio is suspect. In this updated installment I talk about not only the Archives but also, the Showcase Presents volumes, the aforementioned Diana Prince trade paperbacks and two books that you may not be aware of The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Volume 2: Wonder Woman by Michael L. Fleisher (MacMillan, 1976) and Wonder Woman (Bonanza, 1972) which is a Greatest Golden Age Wonder Woman collected edition of sorts and it even has an introduction by Gloria Steinem. Introductions have become a staple in just about every collected edition published these days. They are designed to give the reader insight into what to expect, what to look for and why the following is important. It sets the stage as to what’s to come and to give you an overview of why the book is appealing and worthy of your time.

I tend to read the introduction (or forward or commentary) not only as the first thing but also as a follow up after the book is finished. For me, it make it more complete. Some introductions have stuck with me over time and it makes me want to read the book over and over again. People like Alan Moore can do this. He did so inside the pages of The Complete Frank Miller Batman. Moore is a master himself and him commenting on Frank Miller’s work elevates it. Not only is the story a masterpiece but somehow, but it somehow exemplifies it and makes it more important.

Speaking of Moore, I’m currently reading, for the first time ever, his run on Swamp Thing with DC’s Deluxe Editions. Volume Two has a wonderful intro by Neil Gaiman, who offers up not only his friendship with Moore but he’s one of the few people who can get inside and understand just what Moore is conveying to the reader. Gaiman had me primed and ready by the time I turned the page to Swamp Thing Annual #2 which featured Deadman, Phantom Stranger, The Spectre and Etrigan, The Demon – all of whom are favorites of mine. Also, I would have been completely lost if Gaiman was not there to explain Saga of Swamp Thing #32 which was an homage to Walt Kelly’s Pogo. Moore’s use language alone is baffling, unorthodox, and incomprehensible all the while being beautiful and full of meaning. I had no idea that after Moore was done writing the story he had a hard time going back and writing in plain old English!

You wouldn’t get that from reading the monthly periodical.

What are some of you favorite introductions?

All I can say is thank goodness for the internet. You see I follow a lot of RSS feeds. Perhaps every single comic book related feed out there. I do my best to read them all but usually I’m querying Collected Edition information. This time I came across a gem of a post from Bud Plant, Bookseller Extraordinaire.

For my podcast listeners, you may recall that I came across a large assortment of Big Little Books at the Motor City Con and was instantly hooked. I had seen a few at previous conventions but that was before I got into serious comic book and reprint collecting. Come to find out with Bud’s latest blog post that there is a wonderful book, The Golden Age of Big Little Books by Larry Lowery. This 470 page book is complete with information about all the books published by various companies between 1932-1938. At $125 it is a steep price but consider that Larry is the only one (that I know of) that is tackling this historic time in the history of publishing. Not only can you support Larry’s endeavor of a second book but you can also buy select Big Little Books from his store.

Another surprise find from Bud’s post was the mention of Overstreet Price Guide and Gerber’s Photo-Journal to Comic Books. I own a copy of Overstreet but I was unfamiliar with Gerber. Turns out that there is a 3-Volume set and another 2-Volume set of just Marvel Comics. And if you’re up for some more history and information a must have is the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide (2nd Edition).

Once in a great while something new, something innovative, and something captivating comes along. But of course we all know that there are no new ideas anymore and the things of old just get reimagined and repackaged for a new generation. I’m talking about Wednesday Comics; last summer’s weekly newspaper phenomenon that updated the full page and full color weekly Sunday comics of the 1930 and 40′s. DC Comics rounded up arguably the best talent the could find and put them on their premiere properties like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and others, publishing 15 different one page stories that ran for 12 weeks straight.

I enjoyed the first four issues very much but I stopped buying them because I thought the format was a bit cumbersome and decided to wait for the collected edition to read the entire storylines in one sitting. I think my patience paid off because I believe this is one of the best books to come out this year. Not only is there a multitude of talent and just about every DC character is represented, but we get to see our heroes in a new light and we are not tied to any continuity or pervious incarnation. If all you know about Batman is from Adam West that’s OK, it works. And if you have no idea who Kamadi or Metamorpho is that’s OK, too. After you have read the first page you are instantly transported to their world and are rooting for the good guys to get justice.

There are a few pages of sketches and creator biographies to satisfy your need for DVD extras. But the real Easter Eggs are the full color single pages of The Creeper (written by Keith Giffen with art by Eric Canete) and Plastic Man (written by Evan Dorkin with art by Stephen DeStefano. I can only wonder if the full stories are sitting on Dan Didio’s desk just waiting to get approval for a Wednesday Comics Volume 2.

The May 2010 Comic Book Sales Figures Estimated (Comics Sold to North American Comics Shops as Reported by Diamond Comic Distributors) were recently released and as far as the Trade Paperbacks and Collected Editions go Ex Machina Vol. 9 Ring Out the Old came in at #1. Let’s a take a look at the Top 10. You can follow along with the full list courtesy of The Comics Chronicles. As usual, I’ll be sitting down with John Mayo on his Comic Book Page Podcast, to go over these numbers and more very soon.

Top Selling Collected Editions (Trade Paperbacks, Hardcovers and Graphic Novels)

1. Ex Machina Vol. 9 Ring Out The Old ($14.99) – Wildstorm’s hot property continues to sell well in TPB and so do the Deluxe HC’s. The monthly series is almost over. I think people were a little late to this title (like me) and are just now discovering it. Perhaps with enough interest Ex Machinacould spin-off something new in the future.
2. Sweet Tooth Vol. 1 Out Of The Woods ($9.99) – DC / Vertigo has a nice habit of pricing the Volume 1 trades at the $10 mark. It’s a good way to suck you in. Jeff Lemire’s star is getting more bright by the month. Be sure to read The Essex County Trilogy so you can tell all your friends that you read him when he was an unknown.
3. Invincible Vol. 12 Still Standing ($16.99) and…
4. Walking Dead HC Vol. 5 ($34.99) - there’s just no stopping the Image Comics Robert Kirkman-verse. Walking Dead is coming to a TV near you and I bet Invincible won’t be far behind. I’d like to see a cool Spawn inspired animated show myself.
5. Scalped Vol. 6 The Gnawing ($14.99) Sweet Tooth above – replace Jeff Lemire with Jason Aaron and read The Other Side.
6. Wednesday Comics ($49.99) – Could this offering from DC Comics be the the CCL’s Best Collected Edition of the Year? With 6 months into 2010 it’s got a good shot. I do have to admit that I fully believe that people liked the original newspaper presentation but didn’t exactly know what to make of it after they read it. Do you throw it in the recycle bin? Do you save it? And if so how and for how long? Or do you drop it after 4 issues, like I did, and wait for the collected edition? NOTE: I’ll be reviewing this book on this week’s podcast.
7. Deadpool Vol. 3 X Marks Spot ($15.99) Deadpool sells! Not much else to it!
8. Hellsing Vol. 10 ($13.99) This long running title from Dark Horse sneaked up on me and I have no recollection of how Volumes 1-9 faired on previous lists.
9. Invincible Iron Man Vol. 3 Most Wanted Book 2 ($14.99) Well, well, a book from Marvel. Good thing Iron Man is a big star and had a movie come out in May to help this trade paperback along. Otherwise no Marvel (616) book would’ve cracked the Top 10.
10. Kick Ass Premiere HC ($24.99) More movie hangovers for Marvel. This time from their Icon line.

Both Art Out of Time and the companion follow-up Art in Time (Abrams ComicArts) by Dan Nadel are two such books. Anyone who reads this blog or listens to this podcast must own these great books – not only for historical reasons but for pure enjoyment of a time gone by. Nadel packs in so much and yet he leaves you wanting more. Which is his overall goal. For the real enjoyment is the hunt that you must undertake after your read these books – to seek out, back issue hunt and explore the hidden gems of a classic era in comics. Today on the show Nadel shares with the why’s and how’s of these books and his overall take on the reprint market itself.

It’s been a sad week in the comic book industry.
Not only did we see the last Little Orphan Annie strip but we also lost a giant, and one of our most beloved creators, Al Williamson.

If you never read Annie, I recommend picking up the Library Of American Comics (IDW) reprints. Currently there are five volumes ranging from 1927-1935. They are $49.99 each. And if you have a little girl in your home I suggest you watch the Annie movie from 1982 starring Carol Burnett and Albert Finney. As far as comic book/strip movies go, it’s one of the better ones ever produced.

Steve Bryant has a wonderful post on his hero Al Williamson, which includes a comprehensive rundown of Williamson collected editions. You can also hear Steve talk about Williamson on this week’s Word Balloon Podcast with John Siuntres.

Both Annie and Al will be missed.

My thanks to everyone who sent in an email or posted a comment for last week’s show. I really appreciate it. Things are getting back to normal and the boy in question is suspended from school pending further charges and an expected expulsion. I quickly talk about talk it on today’s episode.

Besides that there is a lot of other things I need to go over including the direction of this podcast for the summertime and the possibility of a video cast – I’m serious this time! Digital Comics are always on my mind, as evident of my DGTL Comics site, (and more often used Twitter feed) and today I touch on IDW and Marvel releasing the same comic book in print and digital form on the same day. I also have brilliant and untapped solution to drum up more business for the Local Comic Book Shop by using Foursquare more effectively. On Tuesday a 3rd grader brought a fully loaded semi-automatic handgun to my son’s school. At recess he showed it off on the playground and other kids promptly told the teachers. The boy ran inside and hid the gun in a pencil box in his desk. He was caught very quickly, tragedy was averted and no one got hurt. Incidentally my 10-year-old son, Patrick, was near by on the basketball court when all this went down. Today on the show I talk about this very scary situation, what is being done and what I am doing as a parent. This topic doesn’t really have to do anything with comics, but it in the past 24 hours it has made me realize that perhaps there is too much violence in my household. This includes video games, movies and my comic book collection – specifically my near complete run of everything Punisher. I don’t have the answers nor do I want to come across like I’m preaching. It’s just that it hit very close to home yesterday and I need to get some things off my chest including what positive steps I can do on my part.

For a few years now I’ve been a fan of Dan Nadel without even knowing it. Not only is Dan the Editor of PictureBox but he is also one of the founders of Comics Comics – a magazine and blog that you should be reading. I’ve been picking up Comics Comics since I first heard about it on though my friends at 11 O’Clock Comics. It’s up to issue 4 right now and you can even get the first three issues as a free download. Dan is also an accomplished author and has just published Art in Time Unknown Comic Book Adventures, 1940-1980 (Abrams) which is a follow up to his 2008 book Art Out of Time Unknown Comics Visionaries, 1900-1969. I never put the author of the blog and author the books together until recently. I couldn’t be more happy that the two are the same. Dan has just posted a wonderful audio panel of himself along with Jeet Heer, Seth and Evan Dorkin from the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. Readers of the CCL will love and appreciate the conversation on the ins and outs of editing/designing/publishing/consuming comics history with a great candid focus on talk on Collected Editions. It is a must listen to show. I hope to have Dan on the CCL Podcast soon. Keep and eye on the blog for more info.

• The Motor City Comic Con starts today and runs through Sunday. If you go, please support the real industry professionals in Artists Alley and say hello to Guy Davis and ask if he has any copies of his Modern Masters book from TwoMorrows. I should be there on Sunday.
• Nest week, for one day only Saturday May 22 is the Summit City Con in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. As it stands right now I won’t be able to make it.
• DC’s Wildstorm Blog has announced that it will be publishing WildCATS 3.0: Year One which is a double sized trade paperback collecting the first two long out of print trades (Brand Building #1-6 and Full Disclosure #7-12). A second book will follow shortly thereafter, but with so much disparity with the title after Volume 3 it’s hard to speculate just what it will collect.
• DC’s Vertigo Blog, on the other hand, has announced a full slate of title coming out in Spring 2011. It’s nice to know these books are coming, but can we just all slow down?

It’s that time of year again: the kickoff of the Summer Blockbusters!

Iron Man 2 came out last week and I pick up where I left off two years ago with a rundown of Iron Man Collected Editions that have been published since the first movie. A lot has come out: Classic material from Tales Of Suspense, New trades of the entire Armor Wars Saga, his Heroes Return in the late 1990’s and his current run (which is to be expected). I tell you what to buy and what to hold off on and even what you may want to purchase as a digital edition. Every week here on the podcast I get to talk about and review all sorts of collected editions. Inevitably, some are better then others. But today, I get to rundown the best of the best. The Eisner Award nominees came out just a few weeks ago and there are three categories that pertain heavily on reprint material: Best Graphic Album-Reprint, Best Archival Collection/Project-Strips and Best Archival Collection/Project-Comic Books. I give a rundown of all the books and grant my thoughts and opinions on a few, including what I think will win. This will also become a new feature on the Podcast as I will eventually cover all the categories. Winners will be announced at Comic Con in July. I welcome your e-mails for your favorite categories so you can play along at home.

One book that I hope will be up for an Eisner next year in the Romita Legacy by Tom Spurgeon (comicsreporter.com) from Dynamic Forces and Dynamite Entertainment. Why is that? Because I conducted two interviews with John Romita Jr. for the book and it’s my very first professional writing assignment. I am so thankful to Joe Rybandt (Dynamite) for having faith and trusting me with the job. I’ll write up a more in depth blog post about the book itself and my experience at a later date. This past weekend I attended C2E2 and I’m so glad I did. I was fortunate to meet up with my friends from the comic book podcast community, including Around Comics, 11 O’Clock Comics, iFanboy, Comic Geek Speak, Comic Timing and Raging Bullets. The McCormick Place venue was just the right size with nice wide aisles and plenty of room to shop and meet the creators in Artists Alley. As for vendors there were not too many collected edition specific dealers and I didn’t find any $5 trades deals, but for the most part you could find all of the latest trades and hardcover that have been released in the past few years for a reasonable price. l’ll have more news and fun stories to tell on the podcast later this week, but for now, here are some highlights from the show.

Collected Edition news was scarce which is expected since more focus is put towards the monthly side like DC’s Brightest Day and The Return of Bruce Wayne and Marvel’s Heroic Age, Avengers and X-Men titles. However I was able to debunk the rumor that the Marvel Essential line is going away. I had a chat with Jim McCann and Arune Singh and they were surprised that there was talk of such a thing. They both assured me that they, Jen Grunwald and David Gabriel have no plans to discontinue the line. Also, Marvel’s long awaited Acts of Vengeance Omnibus has not been officially solicited but should be soon. No concrete time frame given.

On the DC side of things I ran into Dan Didio Saturday night and asked him about the fate of the DC Archive program. I explained to him that many of us are disappointed in the lack of Archives and told him that those of us who buy them are very loyal to this particular brand. Didio was very understanding and said that the Archive program will continue at it’s current pace and only slowed down so DC could try out new lines like the Library and Deluxe Editions and see if they were viable products. He went on to say that all the hardcover lines are being reevaluated (which also means the Absolutes) and he appreciates the support. He and DC know that these are niche books and are not cheap to make nor are they cheap to buy and wants the fan favorites of old to be brought out in a very nice presentable way, like the newly announced Legion of Super-heroes: The Great Darkness Saga Deluxe Edition.

Oni Press will be releasing an anthology based on the Nick Jr. series Yo Gabba Gabba. The 128-page trade paperback will feature art by Matt Loux (“Salt Water Taffy”), Vinny Navarette (“Dear Dracula”), and Julia Vickerman, who does the storyboards for the television series. “Yo Gabba Gabba” art director Parker Jacobs is the artist for the cover of the first volume.

Christos Gage’s Absolution (Avatar Press) will be released in trade paperback in July.

Top Shelf’s Marshal Law Omnibus by Pat Mills and Kevin O’Neill is running behind due to production. It should be out late 2010/early 2011.

Before I ever read a comic book, I watched TV. Like most kids in Detroit, Channel 20 was a favorite showing reruns of Johnny Socko’s Flying Robot or Ultra Man. Channel 50, on the other hand, had reruns of the 1960′s Batman. I clearly remember watching every episode and priding myself on knowing each and every character. I even tried to piece my own continuity, which looking back on it now, was a complete waste of time. But even as a kid all that really mattered was Julie Newmar and Yvonne Craig. I loved the old TV shows: Batman, Hulk, Greatest American Hero, and heck I was even turned back on to Smallville when the JSA arrived.

TwoMorrow’s has now published a complete retrospective of all the superhero television shows called The Age of TV Heroes. It’s extensively researched and written by Jason Hofius and George Khoury. The book is full of interviews and rare photographs from years gone by. Every single live-action show ever having to do with a superhero is represented, which if you think about it is quiet a feat in of itself. I showcase that book today, but if you want to get the authors perspective you can listen to the TwoMorrow’s Tune-In Podcast with Jason and George from last summer when the book was in its final stages.

I collect a lot of books and sometimes it’s hard to read them all. Camelot 3000 by Mike Barr and Brian Bolland is one of those books. I bought the Deluxe Edition Hardcover back when it came out in 2008 and it’s been sitting on my shelf ever since. I finally got around to reading it last week and I was pleasantly surprised. King Arthur, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table are awoken and reincarnated in the Year 3000 AD for this finite 12 issue series that was released over a 29 month period from 1982-1985. Yeah, I know. I cover all that, the extras in the book and more from this groundbreaking series including reading aloud the entire text piece from the Who’s Who entry from 1985.

I thought it was a belated April Fools joke when I read this morning that my friend John Siuntres, WordBalloon, was going to over to iFanboy and join in on the expansion they have going on. Turns out it’s no hoax and I couldn’t be more happy for him. I know for a fact that John works hard at everything he does. You can hear it in his podcasts and if you are ever lucky enough to meet him, you’ll be able to see his enthusiasm for comics, sports and life.
As for Josh, Conor and Ron at iFanboy, they have taken their love for comic books and turned the business on it’s head. I remember when they first started the podcast and I thought to myself it’s just another show to listen to with my iPod. Then I got to meet and join them on the Comics and Podcasting panel at Comic-Con 2006. Their love of comics and professionalism shined through and they have become one of my greatest inspirations. These guys were not some fly by night podcast. Sure they did it for fun, but I could also tell that they had a plan for something greater. I’m headed to C2E2 in a few weeks and I can’t wait to meet back up with them after all these years. Congratulations on the expansion guys. Keep up the great work!
Now on to some Collected Edition news

• In case I missed something, this seems like the only big news out of WonderCon this past weekend: In July, Image Comics will put out the first of two collections of The Crusades, a 20-issue series (plus introductory one-shot) originally published by Vertigo in 2001. Writer Steven T. Seagle and artist Kelley Jones created this story of an 11th century knight transported to modern-day San Francisco. The Urban Decree starter and issues #1-9 will be included in Volume 1.
• Here are some books coming from Oni Press in July including Super Pro K.O.! Vol. 1 and
• Past Lies Little Big Hardcover.
• Soon to be a motion picture, The Losers Vols. 1 and 2 hits the New York Times Paperback Graphic Book Bestseller List! Collecting Volume 1: Ante Up and Volume 2: Double Down (issues #1-12) of the groundbreaking, Eisner-nominated Vertigo series this 304-page paperback by Andy Diggle features art by Jock and Shawn Martinbrough.

We come to the conclusion of Jack Kirby month! This week I focus on one of Jack’s most celebrated creations: Kamandi, The Last Boy On Earth. DC has published two Archive volumes and here at the CCL, I hope they continue on and not only conclude Kirby’s run, but complete the entire series. I also touch upon two other DC Comics series that tie-in to Kamandi: OMAC and The Atomic Knights both of which have their own collected editions (no, I didn’t forget about the now defunct Atomic Knights Showcase Presents book). Lastly, I talk a bit about Jack’s return to Marvel Comics and his Kamandi inspired Devil Dinosaur, which has its own complete Omnibus.
