[Ireland] PhD Positions in Geoinformatics and Climate Change

The Geography Department and Coastal and Marine Resources Centre of University College Cork, Ireland, have two funded research studentships available to commence in October 2008. The studentships cover university fees at the EU level, and an annual stipend. The PhD project aims to address issues of the use of Geoinformatics technologies for predicting the effects of climate change with respect to those coastal areas that are most at risk. The potential benefits of integrating remotely sensed data derived from satellite, airborne and field sources, with other spatial information will be considered. Automated image processing routines will be developed in order to better understand the coastal system at present. Through scenario testing of potential climatically induced terrestrial, marine and meteorological changes, the response of different coastal habitats will be modelled to provide greater insight into the present and future functioning of marsh, dune, lagoon and estuarine environments along the Cork coastline. The use of geovisualisation for communication of results to local interest groups will also be explored.

Applications are invited for a fully funded three-year PhD studentship starting in October 2008. The studentship includes a bursary of £12,600 per annum (tax-free) for three years and all tuition fees.

Candidates should hold a good first degree (at least an Upper-Second Class or equivalent) in a relevant subject area.

Project: Discrimination of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

The emergence of antibiotic resistance in hospital-acquired infections represents a considerable burden to healthcare delivered globally. This research project aims to develop proteomic approaches (including MALDI-TOF-MS) for discrimination and characterisation of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Proteomic techniques, such as two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, will be used to identify biomarkers of antibacterial resistance on the surface of bacterial isolates. Candidates should have a strong interest in bacteriology and molecular biology. Laboratory based practical experience in microbiology, molecular biology and proteomic techniques would be an advantage.

PhD scholarships Nanophotonics for Terabit Communications (NATEC)

A new research centre focusing on nanophotonics for terabit communications is being established at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The centre is based on donations from a private foundation, VILLUM KANN RASNMUSSEN FONDEN. The NATEC centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime. The centre is a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these areas.

Modelling Rupture of CO2 Pipelines

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is considered to be the most effective way of tackling the effects of global warming. This will require the large-scale capture, transportation and storage of CO2. In the case of coal fired power generation plants, pressurised pipelines are considered to be the most practical, and possibly the only option for transporting the captured CO2 for subsequent storage.

Given the enormous amounts of CO2 contained in such pipelines (typically several million tonnes), a prior knowledge of the release rate and subsequent dispersion in the event of pipeline rupture is central to assessing the failure impact. CO2 is toxic and when inhaled in large concentrations can lead to asphyxiation.

Both candidates’ research is part of an industry supported project between CSU and Newcrest Mining. CSU shall offer a fee-free place for each successful candidate. The optimal candidate would have a clear interest in computer vision and pattern recognition. In addition, the candidate should demonstrate a willingness to tackle relevant mathematical problems and to work with various software APIs for the hardware used in this project. For the academic year 2008/09, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in collaboration with the University of Tunis and the italo-indian Chambers of Commerce is offering the first 2-year edition of the International Master’s program in Communication Networks Engineering (IMCNE), starting on Nevember 5th, 2008. The Master is patroned by the Ministry of Research and Foreign Affairs, together with sponsor companies. The Master is structured in traditional front lectures and in laboratory sessions and the program is divided in 4 semesters. The applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications.

The Master program is focused on the provisioning of competence across Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Science, taking into account tecno-economic aspects and services supported by the networks. In the first semester the students will build solid grounds in basic disciplines of information engineering. In the second and third semester they will acquire strong competence in the area of: software for telecommunication, design of wired and wireless networks, network architectures and tecno-economic aspects, network components. In the last semester, they will develop and original Master thesis in Scuola Sant’Anna Laboratories or in one of the sponsor companies. At the end of the Master program they will be able to design, plan and manage complex telecommunication infrastructures with heterogeneous network segments both from the hardware and software point of view.
