Data Center News: PayPal announced earlier today that it has added a fourth data center location in support of online operations. Exactly how much growth is the eBay subsidiary preparing for?

eCommerce Support

The eBay owned company has a need for more bandwidth, data storage and capacity to meet the ever increasing demands of online transactions.

Furthermore, PayPal is facing fierce competition from companies like square, who have infringed upon the brick and mortar eCommerce the company has relied upon for years.

Company president Davis Marcus stated that PayPal is in fact expanding rapidly and that adding a fourth data center is essential for keeping up with eCommerce support. An official location had not been disclosed. Currently, PayPal operates colocation data centers in the following locations: Scottsdale Arizona and San Jose California.

Fortunately for PayPal, a fourth data center might not be such a bad idea considering traditional retail locations are dwindling; the day and age of online shopping has officially arrived. PayPal reported a third quarter revenue in excess of $50 billion in 2012, a number that represents room for growth as the company moves into the 2nd and 3rd quarter of 2013. All things considered, it is probably a good idea that PayPal is adding more capacity to its robust data center network. Company reps say that the company plans to double its revenues within 3 years.

The Turkish ministry of Customs and Trade received a Tier III certification from the Uptime Institute, an agency known for rigorous audits.

Receiving a Tier III certification for data centers is a standardized process, but Tier III status from the Uptime Institute is quite an honor in our industry. So how did the Turkish government accomplish this? Through great design and computer modeling.

Data Center Design

Data center design has significantly improved over the years thanks to 3D modeling software Turkish contractors used to design the government facility.

Sudlows worked together with partners Symturk and Ankara to document the design. Although it is unclear when construction of the Turkish data center will begin, officials promised the final product will employ the most advanced green technologies for improved efficiency.

Technical Skill in Demand

Sudlows' design expertise is in high demand, especially since more European countries are starting to embrace green technology and 3D building techniques. The technical skill required to build a Tier III facility requires the most advanced technology available today. The uptime institute awards certifications on a I to IV scale, I being the least redundant and IV being the most. Less than 230 certifications have been issued worldwide from the Uptime Institute. The rigorous auditing process looks at the following details: backup power, cooling techniques, fire protection. Once the facility is complete, the Turkish Ministry of Customs and Trade data center will become a communications hub in Europe.

Back in 72, Robert Metcalfe and Dave Boggs, both employees at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, worked around the clock to build a network that would eventually become the Ethernet.

The Ether Network as it was called, was capable of carrying 1 terabit per second. At the time, Metcalfe and his peers had text terminals that could communicate at 300 bits per second; this wasn't enough.

If the Ether Network was to evolve connectivity would have to get faster to communicate across long distances; and it did.

10 Mbps Internet

Research continued throughout the 1970s and in 1976, Metcalfe and Boggs published a white-paper entitled: Ethernet: Distributed Packet-Switching for Local Computer Networks. Soon after, the White House got an Ethernet connection just as Xerox was considering selling its idea as a commercial product. Fortunately, for the world, Xerox did not choose to sell; the idea was to make it an open standard on which engineers could work off of, developing a faster ethernet year after year.

A race to the top

What ensued was a heavy competition from companies all claiming to have a superior ether network. In the end, Metcalfe and his team won the battle and founded 3Com in the late 1980s. Backed by Digital and Intel, 3Com boosted connectivity to 20 Mbps by the end of the decade. If 20Mbps was overkill, then 400Gb would certainly be too fast than anyone ever imagined. But Metcalfe and his team quickly discovered that technology had a way of pushing things to the next level.

Looking Forward

Ethernet eventually became the basis for wireless technology or more importantly, Wi-Fi. So does this mean we owe everything to Metcalfe and his team? The young inventor would certainly say yes. Today however, Metcalfe will celebrate 40 years of Ethernet history at the Ethernet Innovation Summit in Mountain View, California where others will get to tell their story about their contributions to the Ethernet.

Officials at the US National Security Agency (NSA) were caught off guard after Utah state legislators passed a new energy bill imposing a 6% tax.

The agency's Utah data center is about to come online this fall and expected to consume $40 million of electricity a year. 6% on $40 million you say?

Why yes, that is quite a nice chunk of change. Will the NSA be forced to pay this tax? Cheaper tax incentives are what attracted the agency to Utah in the first place.

Utah State Taxes

The tax bill HB325, was singed in on April 26. According to a local newspaper, the NSA was never informed about the possibility of a utility tax increase. Utah state taxes allow military properties to be put on public tax rolls. NSA says they are negotiating with state officials to come to an agreement on the matter. Negotiations aside, HB325 could end up costing the NSA over $2 million a year.

Military Installation Development Authority

Critics argue that NSA's data center, which will be used to collect emails and other data, doesn't deserve to dodge a tax just because it is a military organization. If forced to pay, NSA dollars will be put back into the Utah Military Installation Development Authority, an entity created by the Department of Defense(DoD) to redevelop properties with private contractors. Perhaps Utah officials mislead the NSA but it's hard to argue that paying tax on $40 million isn't fair.

Silicon Valley is full of innovators such as Abhi Talwalkar, who has become known as a thought leader when it comes to the data deluge.

As the CEO and president of LSI Corporation and a former Intel executive, it was a natural progression for Talwalkar to take over one of the oldest and largest semiconductor companies in Silicon Valley.

LSI had seen its profit margins plummet after some difficulties around the turn of the century, but Talkwalkar knew how to turn things around. But more importantly, it was also natural that he took an interest in the issue of data deluge, as this will be affecting his industry as we progress through the 21st century. It is an issue that anyone in a technology-related (or reliant) industry should be concerned about.

Data Deluge

The term data deluge refers to the inconsistency between the seemingly endless increase in data and the slow growth in IT spending at companies of all sizes across various industries. The amount of traffic on mobile networks is still increasing by more than 30 percent a year, and hundreds of millions of smart-phones are being sold each year. This matter is further complicated by the fact that mobile applications are growing by the millions and consumers are accessing billions of downloads each year. And where are all these applications being positioned?

Most of them can be found in the cloud, and technology innovators will need to be ready to manage this cloud to keep up with the deluge of the coming years and decades.

Solutions for the Deluge of Data

Innovators like Talwalkar are leading the way by sponsoring academic research and fostering conversations about the future of data storage and communications. Consumers and organizations will require solutions for storage and networking with increasing complexity and depth into the future, and companies like his are leading the way in the business end of things.

According to tmcnet.com, it is a global company with more than 500 employees, many of whom are located in the Silicon Valley area. For companies like this, there will be a major responsibility to work with other industry leaders in order to provide solutions that offer real value for organizations of all sizes and scopes as their data requirements continue to grow well into the future.

One of his favorite people to write about is Abhi Talwalkar.

For the last two years, Facebook has been scouting locations for yet another data center; Iowa has beat out 30 states in a bid to become the next data center hub.

The $230 million project will convert 200 acres of Altoona into Facebook's fourth data center.

Iowa Economic Development

City officials were kept in the dark on whether or not the deal would go through, not sure how many states they were competing with.

This is a huge economic win for Iowa - a deal that will create 2,500 construction jobs and more than 30 IT jobs. Average salaries are expected to pay $40, 000 annually and grow state income to $1 billion within 6 years.

Local business leaders also expect Facebook's presence to boost the state's image. Negotiations will be under way for quite some time before any land is broken, but one things for certain; Facebook's fourth data center will put Iowa on the map.

A Shaky Deal

According to the Des Moines register, Iowans were kept in suspense up until the final hours of contract negations. Nebraska put up a fight matching Iowa on tax incentives all across the board. But Iowa was determined not to have the deal fall through. In the end, Facebook decided Iowa was indeed the best place for its next data center. The state has the engineering and construction expertise not to mention the right geographic location for wind and solar energy. Combine those attributes with low utility costs and a talented workforce and you have yourself a winner.
Data center news: City officials in San Francisco announced plans to move its private disaster recovery data center, located 3,000 miles away to a state side location.

The goal for any state is to be able to quickly recover from a disaster, restoring IT and telecommunications as soon as possible. Generally speaking, it is best to back up data to a remote facility far enough away from the disaster area to not be affected.

Yet 3,000 miles might be too far away; the proposed disaster recovery data center is located 100 miles outside city limits.

Disaster Recovery Data Center

SunGard has been the city's go-to data center on the east coast for 8 years. City officials say that SunGard doesn't have the necessary safeguards in place to ensure a speedy recovery from either a natural or man-made disaster. The San Francisco Examiner reported a two-year, $270, 000 agreement has been proposed naming Rancho Cordova as the city's next disaster recovery data center.

Data Center Location

It's a gamble for San Francisco, a city prone to earthquakes but if the city chooses to co-locate its disaster recovery data centers, city engineers will have easy access to critical IT systems. Data center location is yet another critical factor when considering where you want your data backed up to. If San Francisco feels 100 miles is enough distance between fault lines then so be it. One positive would be the ability to connect to a facility that is closer in proximity to city limits ensuring the city isn't knocked offline for long. After all, there are plenty of state and local agencies relying on San Francisco for data center infrastructure. If the city isn't able to continue business operations as usual, a disaster could cost the city thousands, if not millions.

Not every search engine is going to give you what you need. Because of the enormity of the internet, many of the larger search engines can be a little overwhelming.

It is important to find the right search engine for your specific needs. There are a lot of search engines out there, even though you may have only heard of a few of them.

Google Locations

If you want to get the most results for your query, search with Google. This search engine is the largest of all of them, and is going to give you the most results. However, that can be a little daunting, if you aren’t quite sure what you are looking for.

One of the nice things about Google, however, is that it can use your location when you do searches. This means that if you search for cheap internet providers in my area, you are going to get a better result with Google than with most other search engines.

Get Questions to Your Answers

Do you have a specific question that you need an answer to? If you need a factual answer to your question, there are search engines such as Ask Jeeves and Answers.com that can help you. These search engines are geared specifically to answer questions about statistical or factual things. However, you probably won’t get great results for searches like what to do when you are bored.

Check all the Engines

If you are interested in finding the most responses to your search with the least amount of effort, you will want to look at a metasearch engine.

There are a few of these out there, such as Search.com and Ixquick. These will pull results from many different search engines, giving you the most results possible.

Find a Job on Monster

If you are looking specifically for a job, it is important to take your search to a job search engine. If you just look at a regular search engine, you are going to have a difficult time. However, there are many different job search engines, depending on your area. In India, there is Bixee.com, Canada has Eluta.ca, Korea has Incruit, and America boasts many different sites including Career Builder, Monster, and Dice.com

Use Search Engine Operators

Each search engine has a list of operators that can be used to help you find exactly what you are looking for. Adding an operator to your search can help you narrow down the search by searching for an entire phrase, only looking for a specific site name, searching for a phrase without certain words or phrases, and more. It is important to note that each search engine has different operators that are used, so you need to know the operators used by the engine you are using.

Picking a search engine can be difficult. Many people choose their favorite search engine and stick with that, no matter what they are looking for. However, this can limit the information you get in the long run.

Sweet bejesus, it's Friday! Time for yet another fine installment of tech shenanigans: This week, MIT creates a robotic bartender, Facebook and Yahoo bid for Tumbler and how iPhone 6 will make everyone feel like a professional photographer.

Robotic Bartender

A robotic Bartender; glad to see MIT is putting money to good use. I suppose it's a good thing that technology is replacing that cheeky guy or gal who ignores you then expects a tip. Is this the beginning of the end for service industry folks? Perhaps. MIT says it got the idea from a production line robot, except that maybe, just maybe, it could be programmed to make cosmos and foo-foo drinks for partygoers.

According to CNN, MIT has successfully rigged up their mobile-phones to the robot allowing them to place a drink order without even walking up to the bar. MIT insists that its robotic bartender demonstrates the future possibilities of consumer manufacturing, in this case foo-foo drinks designed by drunk idiots. What a technological breakthrough! At least you won't have to tip the bartender. For the record, always leave a tip, so long as the bartender is human. If not, they may just put finger nail clippings into your cosmo. Shirley Temple anyone?

Tumbler's Suitors

Now that Facebook is finally becoming uncool to the 18-24 crowd, let us shift our attention to Tumbler, the popular social media site dedicated to photo-feeds and such; Facebook and Yahoo are interested in snatching up the company. Personally, I think Yahoo needs to die because no one really likes them anymore. Facebook is kinda like Apple now, what with its Monopoly -yact rocking attitude and such.

Don't they deserve to rule the social media world forever and ever? The answer is yes, just let it happen. Then when Facebook finally falls from grace in 5-10 years perhaps this social media thing will go away for good. Then I could actually get back to getting work done around the house. I think there's a tumbler out there that says "who cares." On to the next thang...

iPhone 6 will make you feel like a professional photographer

Are you a self-proclaimed professional iPhone photographer? Lets be honest here, just because your smart-phone packs a serious punch in the camera department doesn't mean you're a real photographer.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel like a pro taking hipstamatic and instagram shots with my iPhone, but apple promises its forthcoming iPhone 6 will pack the best camera punch yet. According to insiders, Apple has filed a patent for an illuminating device that will give users the ability to manipulate light just like professionals do.

The patent also promises to deliver other photo-enhancing tools such as: instructions on photo adjustment, how to properly take a test shot and adjust your position to capture that stellar food truck burrito you're about to inhale. Can't wait to hash-tag the heck out of that one. Until next week folks, hold on to your hats and try not to lose your sh&# if you happen to be a professional photographer who's out of a job because of Apple. Ain't technology grand!

Friday Fun Blog week of 5/1/2013-5/7/2013

Sweet bejesus It's Friday! Oh, how it comes and goes so fast. This week; the wonders of Photoshop; 3 reasons why tech support hates your a** and the history of the wiener dog.

Photoshop: Making people look hot since 1990

Photoshop has been making everyone look much prettier than they really are since 1990. And why not. After-all, if it weren't for photoshop just about every celebrity would be knocked down a notch on the hotness scale. Check out these before and after shots of some notable Hollywood celebs (yikes):

3 reasons why tech support hates you

The scene goes a little something like this: I didn't touch it. It just froze up on its own, blue screen and all. Sound familiar? Probably, especially if you're the go-to IT person in the office. Fact is, that go-to person hates your guts. Why?

-You don't hit update when prompted: News flash my precious little peach: you must update your software whenever your computer tells you to. Otherwise, windows 95 is going to freeze up on you.

-You didn't renew your Anti-virus subscription: What'ya mean I didn't update my anti-virus software? I thought it was automated, never mind those daily prompts I've been receiving for over a week.

-Your machine is so old it should be taken out back and smashed to bits. I don't know. All of a sudden my machine just got really sloooooow. That's because your computer is over 6 years old and is running a legacy system that's about to be phased out by the support community forever and ever. Take it out back and smash it to bits, immediately! Seriously, PCs are so cheap these days it's ridiculous. Note to self, take desktop out back and smash to bits.

Wiener dogs! Sure, why not

Dude, everyone loves a wiener dog; what with those short legs and long bodies what's not to like? It's fricken hilarious to watch one try and keep up with you on a run. Ok, that's not funny but this photo of a wiener dog wearing a hot dog bun sure is:

Wiener History

The wiener dog, formally referred to as the Dachshund, originates from Germany. Although they were originally introduced to the America's in the 1880's, they were primarily bred for hunting badgers.

And Dachshund in German means, quite literally (you guessed it), badger dog. How cool is that? I might start calling them badger-dogs just because it sounds cool; almost as funny as wiener-dog.

What's that? You got a badger problem in your backyard? Just get a badger-dog, snuff em out and be done with it. Note to self: badger milk will not give you super human strength. And now, for absolutely no apparent reason, here's a video of a bunch of badger dogs racing (hilariously cute):

Friday Fun Blog: week of 4/22/2013-4/27/2013

Friday! I don't even know where to begin; what a week it has been. This week: why bearded men live healthier lives, how whale waste is saving Earth and further proof cats are the laziest animals alive!

Beards are better than sunblock!

Dude! Don't clog your pores with sunblock, grow a beard instead. News flash ladies! The face muff just ain't for looks but they also keep a man healthy. Need further proof?

Australian researchers form the University of Southern Queensland published their findings in the Radiation Dosimetry journal stating, 90-95% of all UV rays are blocked by a mans illustrious beard.

Here's the thing, many a women have pleaded with their man to shave off that horrendous - skin scratching thing they call a beard. Little that they know this so-called face muff is keeping their boyfriend from getting sun-burn at the beach. Beards! They're not just for hippies and vegans anymore.

Furthermore, the Aussies also found that beards help retain skin moisture - preventing dry skin in the process. Beardy fellas are also less likely to develop a skin infection from shaving too much. That's right snookie, the face muff stays! Ladies, if you care about your man's health, let him keep the beard. Just quit being a nag about how it hurts to kiss his face. Love is pain!

Whale Waste - It's good for mother Earth

Fun fact: when we poo, we pollute the sewer system. When Whales poo, they save the Earth. When's the last time you took a poo and saved the Earth? That's what I thought ! e-cig anyone?

According to discovery.com, whale waste (a watery-like substance) is so rich in iron it actually traps carbon that forms in the atmosphere.

Researchers estimate that 400,000 tons of carbon per year is absorbed by whale poo. 400,000 tons! Put that in your stupid e-cig and smoke it! That Moby Dick - what a mammal.

Cats - the laziest animals alive!

I leave for work, the cats are sleeping. I come back from work, the cats are sleeping. I wished those damn things would just get a job already. I can't even get them to kill a spider in the bath tub (believe me, I tried). Instead, they just beg for food at dinner time and try to make it up to me by looking all zen. Perhaps that's what they were put here to do - to chill us out by looking all zen. I guess if I slept all day I'd look all zen too. And now, for absolutely now apparent reason, here's a video of cats looking all zen: Relax man! It's Friday ;0

Friday Fun Blog: week of 4/15/2013-4/19/2013

Sweet tulips, it's Friday! I thought this week would never end; time to steal that copy machine and smash it to bits! This week, Google Glass FORBIDS anyone from reselling or loaning their glasses, the Panda Jerk defined and the history of the Urinal. Shimmy shimmy bang bang, Friday Fun Blog and urban slang.

The Panda Jerk

Let's pretend for a moment that you and I work together. You corner me at the coffee machine and ask, "Hey Uncle Jimmy, what's a Panda Jerk?" The Panda Jerk? I thought you'd never ask. As defined by the internet, a Panda Jerk is simply a Jerk Panda so mean and grumpy he refuses to give interviews, take pictures or even smile back at the zoo. Upon further investigation, it appears that the Panda is perhaps a Jerk because he think no-one is taking him seriously. Don't let those cuddly bastards fool you, Panda's are indeed Jerks. Need further proof? Check out this clip from 2004's Anchorman:

History of the Urinal

Last week, we enlightened you with the history of the toilet. This week, we thought we'd add to that theme and tell you about the history of the Urinal. Remember, if you live with a girl, be a sweetie and wipe the seatie:

74 AD: Ancient Rome, under the rule of Vespasian, erected public toilets that were taxed. That's right, the emperor taxed everyones' pee. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

400 - 1590 AD: Regard for urinals, and sanitation for that matter, pretty much went out the window. Quite literally, city streets smell like pee. Come to think of it, Downtown Los Angeles still smells like pee. What's up with that?

1596: Sir John Harrington builds a flush toilet for his god mother, Queen Elizabeth the 1st. Urination disposal becomes a bit more civilized.

1866: Andrew Rankin patents the Urinal in the United States. Subsequently goes from being piss poor to stinking rich in just 3 months (Fact not confirmed).

1950: American Standard introduces the first female urinal (that's right, a urinal for females). Selling point: you don't have to touch it. As a result, housewives develop extraordinary strength in their quads and glutes.

Late 90's: Philippines install street toilets. No one cares and pisses in the street.

2000's: Some ingenious bastard installs small TV screens in front of toilets so as to try and sell you something while you piss. TV screens in bathrooms become a hit, particularly at sports bars, where stage fright runs rampant

Google Glass Terms of Service

Apart from Google Glasses stoping you from having a normal conversation with another human being, owners of this nifty gem aren't allowed to sell or loan them to anyone.

Says who? Says the Goog, that's who! You got a problem with that. What, were you just planning on spending $1,500 on some dumb glasses only to hock em on eBay for profit.

Sorry to pee all over your enthusiasm, BUDDY, but Google stats in its user agreement that owners cannot resell, trade or lone their glasses out to anyone. If they do, the Goog says it will deactivate the device and send a hit squad after you.

That's pretty harsh, but rest assured, the user community will eventually figure out a way to get around the issue. Cracked iPhone anyone? Have a great weekend and don't' forget to drop in next week or more Friday Fun Blog shenanigans.

Friday Fun Blog week of 4/8/2013 - 4/12/13

History of the toilet

We realize that potty humor may not be an appropriate topic, but then again, if you're reading this you probably don't care. A friend of ours shared with us this rather informative bit about the history of the toilet. Crapper really isn't really a slang word for our beloved porcelain thrones; it's the named after John Crapper, the grandaddy of flush toilets.

Mr. Crapper got sick of seeing people doing their business in the street so he sprung to action marketing flush toilets in the 1800's; no-doubt in the name of public health. Not exactly something you want to think about while eating a ham sandwich but still, Mr Crapper deserves world-wide recognition and praise for promoting the use of flush toilets in modern societies. Leave the street pooping to your dog, but please, don't forget to pick up after them. RIP Mr Crapper. You're a gentleman and a scholar.

Google

Google has just released its Inactive Account Manager in case you want to keep your email and social media accounts going in the afterlife. So, if you're thinking of kicking the bucket anytime soon you can update your profile info to include secondary email addresses Google will reach out to if your account becomes inactive for a period of 6-12 months. You can elect family members to keep your accounts active and keep everyone updated on your legacy following your death. Looks like the Grim Reaper just got a personal secretary service to offer us in the afterlife. But seriously though, who cares what happens to their emails and blog posts after death? I guess if you wanted to live forever this is the next best thing. Thanks Goog, you're the best! Forward our calls to the grave would ya. Enough of that noise; have a look at these Husky pups. They're are cute as hell, aren't they?

Husky Pups!

Husky pups! And why not? It's Friday: Four facts you may not know about this beloved beast: Husky pups originated from eastern Siberia and were imported to Alaska during the turn of the century.

The town of Nome experienced an extreme diphtheria outbreak in 1925 and a team of Husky dogs traveled through an intense blizzard to deliver a life-saving serum to residents.

Talk about bravery. These cute bastards have a howl that can be heard for miles too. Perfect for those times when you're stranded in the middle of no where and can't get a cell-phone signal. On a side note, we think it's time they brought back the carrier pigeon, you know, for those times when a howling husky dog loses his voice.

Friday Fun Blog Week of 3/29

Don't work too hard because it's Friday. This week, the cars of A-Team (flash-back Friday anyone?), a dishwashing monkey (a dream pet) and Mark Zuckerberg's outrageous tax bill. Friday fun blog is in full effect. But first, the A-team van and Face's sweet 80's Corvette.

The Cars of the A-Team

The A-team van is way too badass to be considered rapey. even though it has no windows and transports a couple of war criminals.

Why exactly did every young boy fall in love with this 80's sitcom? Simple; Because B.A Baracus rocked a fricken mohawk and kicked major ass and rolled deep with his poesy in a bad-ass conversion van, that's why. Obviously, this has nothing to do with tech but who cares.

Just look at that sweet Corvette with red stripes. And you wonder why Face was such a ladies man. It's cause of that corvette man. Chicks dig it!

Dishwashing Monkey (Because washing dishes sucks)

Washing dished sucks! Seriously, don't you just hate it when your significant other goes through clean dishes like they're going out of style? Again, rhetorical. What's with those delicate hands of yours? Washing dishes can be really bad for the skin. The solution: get a dishwashing monkey. Problem solved!

You might think it's cruel but take a look at this video of a monkey doing dishes. He needed some responsibility and someone up and gave him some. Just look at him, he's perfectly happy doing those dishes. Just get him some rubber gloves so his cute little humanoid hands don't get all wrinkly. At least that might get PITA off our asses for employing a dishwashing monkey.

Abandoned places are creepy beautiful

Geeks and nerds all have their crosses to bear. Our favorite time waster of this week: looking at abandoned places on buzzfeed. For no apparent reason here's a picture of a sunken ship in Antartica:

Mark Zuckerberg is Stinking Rich

Mark Zuckerberg has done wonders for the social media community but dispute the fact that he has money flowing out his ears, we're almost certain he's still a geek. A geek with a huge tax bill that is. According to Wall Street, Zuckerberg 'exercised' his right to purchase 60 million Facebook shares at 6 cents each.

That amounts to roughly $13 billion of personal income and you better believe Uncle Sam is gonna get rich quick. So how much does he owe anyway? The IRS says $1.1billion. Gasp! Yup, you heard correct. $1.1 billion smackaroos. Can't say we feel sorry for the guy. What the heck would you do with $13 billion? Seriously, what would you do? By your own island maybe?

We'd snuff out the competition :0 Just kidding. That's called monopolizing, which is against the law (ahem google) and consequently frowned upon here in the states. Until next week dear friends. Have yourselves a great weekend. Please excuse us while we go buy some paper plates.

Friday Fun Blog Week of 3/18-3/22

Friday, let me count the ways in which I love you, 4 to be exact. Let's be honest here, if you're reading this you're probably slacking off like the best of 'em today. We'd be lying if we said we weren't doing the same. Okay, on to the fun stuff.

This week, NCAA.com now includes a "boss button" on the side of your screen so you can watch the game at work and not get caught, Apple patents drop protection for iPhone, Apple patents a useless feature and Business Cat trends again. Oh the humility! Cat lovers are some weird folks. Here goes:

NCCA Boss Button

So the scenario goes a little something like this; you're a sports fan and pretty stealthy at slacking off during work, so what do you do?

You head over to NCAA.com, cue up the latest March Madness game but oh wait, you're boss just walked in, on their way back from the bathroom (coffee's a natural diuretic) and they just happen to glimpse at your monitor. "Was he just watching march madness while pretending to work?" Nah, why? Because you hit the boss button just in time and minimized the window.

But wait, you forgot to close that my little pony fan-page you've got going on safari. Now you're boss just pities you because you're a broney (male my-little pony fan). Shit happens, but hey, at least you didn't get caught watching college basketball at work. Thank you NCAA.com. We love you! On to the next...

Apple Patents Drop Protection

Lets be honest; how many of your annoying iPhone wielding friends have dropped their iPhones and cracked their screen? Practically everyone you know who owns an iPhone right? That's a rhetorical question btw so bear with me. Apparently Apple got the memo: STOP MAKING THINGS THAT BREAK SO EASILY!

Yeah, a glass screen on a smartphone, that's a GREAT idea. Apple's answer: patent an internal gyroscope that will "thrust" the phone in mid-drop as to make it land not on the glass screen (that breaks if you look at it funny) but instead on its arse. Which is apparently MUCH more durable.

News-flash Apple: It's called an iPhone case. You know, those rubber thingys they up-sell you at the Apple store. So, you didn't have to go and spend god knows how much on an anti-drop mechanism, did you.

I got a better idea fellow iPhone users. Don't drop your phone. Yeah, how bout them apples? Ok, done with the rant. Congrats to the engineers at Apple, who've manage to re-invent the way we drop our expensive iPhones. Another fine example of how innovation is turning us into idiots. But what about those weird Cat fans?

Business Cat Trends Again

Some cat owners just have way-too much time on their hands. What's that you say? Dressing up your cat in business suits and taking photographs of them is normal? Yeah, totally normal. Just like conspiracy theories, Luis Vuitton Snuggies and The Kardashians. I digress. Without further ado I give you Business Cat. The online sensation caught trending on Reddit and Buzzfeed. Happy Friday everyone! Rememeber, if you're going to slack off at work, do it right. Hit the "Boss Button". Did we mention that Harvard beat New Mexico? Who knew those Ivy leaguers could actually play ball?

Fun Friday Blog Week of 3/15/2013

Ah yes. It's Friday, and you know what that means; Time for yet another installment of our Fun Friday Blog. This week: Tim Cook gets a downgrade from his employees, the internet community pits Alpacas against Raccoons just for the heck of it and Google "accidentally" steals or data from unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Oh the irony.

Tim Cook Isn't Winning

Newsflash, Apple CEO Tim Cook isn't exactly living up to expectations but to be fair, Steve Jobs left behind some rather large shoes to fill. You'd think his staff would cut him some slack.

Not so much. Apparently, Apple employees logged on to Glassdoor.com to rank their no-so-prolific leader. Unfortunately, Cook's approval ratings have dropped 4 percentage points since last year.

The Apple Maps fiasco didn't help his reputation much as the app completely sucked. I know that's harsh to say, even coming from an Apple lover, but when you get lost in West L.A traffic at the hands of Apple's crappy map app you'd understand where we're coming from.

No one doubts Apple's ability to innovate so lets hope cook can rally the troops and force them to innovate like they've never done before. Don't worry Cook, we're sure you're compensated handsomely for your woes. It's tough being on top isn't it?

Alpacas Vs Raccoons

So, apparently the internet community has a lot of time on their hands. That or everyone goofs off way more than they should during normal business hours. Either way, enjoy the picture above of this cute raccoon doing absolutely nothing and the creeper alpaca photo-bombing itself below. If cuteness could kill we'd be dead by the end of this sentence.

Google Steals Data "Accidentally"

I used to steal candy when I was kid, naturally, because i'm a ginger. But doesn't mean i'd lie about it to my mother and tell her it was an accident that all that Brachs candy ended up in my pockets.

So don't spit on us and tell us it's raining GOOGLE. How do you accidentally steal data from unsecured Wi-Fi networks anyway? That's just the question several states asked the tech giant, to which they responded: "Don't worry. It's all good. It was an accident, we swear. Um, sorry. Here's $7million for your troubles. Go buy yourself something nice."

I guess when you're a rock star tech giant company $7 million bucks paid out to 37 states is just chump change. Jeez, we're clearly in the wrong line of work. Moral of the story: Don't steal candy if you have red hair. Everyone knows your guilty. And if you run a company that's so big and profitable it's practically a monopoly stealing data is "no big deal". Just bust out your wallet and pay for what you stole. Until next time, Happy Friday dear friends. PS. Secure your Wi-Fi network, it's really not that hard ;)

Friday Fun Blog Week of 2/22/2013

Oh yes ladies and gents, it's about that time. Friday Fun Blog is here! This week, a rather embarrassing windows 95 video starring Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry resurfaces, the FCC attempts to make public Wi-Fi less terrible and NBC gets hacked.

But first, let us declare our grievances concerning this weeks subject matter: First off, public Wi-Fi really does suck, we're really surprised cast members from friends didn't capitalize on their notoriety even more and no-one really cares NBC got hacked until it has affected their afternoon spiel. Ok, onward we go.

Windows 95 Instructional Video: They Shouldn't Have

No one can deny the TV show "Friends" was a force to be reckoned back in the day, but Windows 95 was seriously taking over. We suppose the internets was still considered unchartered territory for some but this is just plain ridiculous, even by 1995 standards. Apparently, Microsoft figured that navigating through its latest desktop OS was just too confusing they felt the need to shoot an instructional video starring non-other than, Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry. This Cyber Sitcom will take you on an "adventure in computing". Rachel hair-do not included. What chemistry those two had. Did we mention one of our staffers caught Mr. Perry checking out his girlfriend once? No? Just saying.

The FCC: Public Wi-FI Will Suck Less

In an effort to provide better Wi-Fi signals in US cites, the FCC announced they will be freeing up some spectrum, specifically, in the 5GHz range to improve the internets. So basically five nerds got together and came up with a creative solution that actually might work: use existing television towers to amplify Wi-Fi signals. The FCC seemed vague on the details but promised this approach to be a real "game-changer". For our shake, lets hope that this so-called "game changer" is enough to make us not curse like a sailor ever-time we decide to check our email at the shopping mall. "Stupid Phone, won't connect. My data plan sucks!" We won't hold our breath on that one, which brings us to the next topic at hand.

Hackers Strike. Again.

Dear hacker, 1995 called and they want their instructional video back. No seriously, what does one have to do to not have their web browser crash every-time they need a does of Jay Leno's Garage?

Sadly, NBC experienced a "potent strain of malware" first hand, when a Trojan (normally used to steal bank-account information) infected any computer attempting to navigate through its website. So now, some unlucky peeps just got hacked while trying to waste time at work.

Let this be a lesson to ya (ah-c'mon) and a reminder that Hackers suck! I guess this means we should update our computers when prompted. NBC stated that the malware detected outdated web-browser settings and exploited accordingly. We sincerely hope that no one's financial data was compromised but seriously, enough with the damn malware. We've got enough to worry about, like crappy free Wi-Fi and the pleated pants our mother's keep sending us. Until next week, happy Friday folks!

Companies of all sizes can benefit from purchasing a server, but sometimes it's hard to pull the trigger on one.

We won't lie, a decent dedicated server will set you back a few grand but the companies who are looking to grow should think of it as a future investment.

You may not need all that computing power now, but if you plan on sticking around, you will eventually grow into the machine. Don't fret, there are cheaper options out there for companies on a budget.

Cheap Dedicated Servers

It's easy to understand why business owners are hesitant to invest thousands into a machine they don't necessarily need. Dell offers a few entry level dedicated servers; the PowerEdge R210 II is priced around $569.00, while the R320 and R420 are priced between $999.00 and $1,230.00 respectively. The beauty of a cheap dedicated server is that it will provide enough flexibility to share, manage and protect your data without breaking the bank. Shall your company expand, simply upgrade to the next best thing. By that time, you will have the means to justify such an expenditure; if you are still questioning why you need a server, let us remind you that servers will help streamline business operations.

Servers are Utilitarian

Simply put, servers are utilitarian; they provide the space necessary to store, access and share data that is critical to running your business effectively. Servers also allow your office to work more productively, as employees are able to share or track information regarding a client no matter where they are. Latest software offerings from Microsoft allow seamless networking between mobile devices, desktops and laptops. Furthermore, it's easy to value something when you actually experience how a server streamlines day-to-day business operations. Data backup is also an important factor to consider; a dedicated server is typically equipped with multiple hard-drives or mirror drives. Backing up a data base to a server will also free up space on office computers, allowing for greater efficiency.

Power and Scalability

Power and scalability are the last things to consider shall you choose to invest in a dedicated server. As we mentioned, there are cheap dedicated servers available on the market that will provide enough scalability until you really hit the big time. Before you make a decision, take the time to consider who you will be doing business with. If the majority of your business exists online or within the tech realm, then you will need a dedicated server. Just remember, you don't have to spend a fortune to invest in the future growth of your company.

Web hosting companies looking to increase their sales and expand customer reach in 2013 need only to do one thing: offer ecommerce solutions and online payment methods to their customers.

Ecommerce Solutions

Online shopping is the biggest trend in retail right now, and do you know why? It’s convenient. Shopping online makes the purchasing process endlessly easier on the customer: they can browse leisurely and conveniently from the comfort of their own home, they can complete a purchase in just a matter of minutes using only a credit or debit card and, many times, they can even avoid paying sales tax on items. For all these reasons, online shopping is, and will continue to be, on the rise in our country.

Web hosting companies can capitalize on the growing popularity of online shopping by offering convenient and affordable ecommerce solutions to their customers. Specifically, they can sell their hosting packages, web management services, and other offerings in an easy-to-browse web store format, allowing shoppers to compare details, services, and pricing. Then, they can even enable online payment methods, making the purchase just a simple click away once the customer makes a decision.

As many web hosting packages require a monthly or annual renewal fee, offering online payment methods can have additional benefits, as well, allowing customers to easily set up and configure a regular, recurring subscription. That means, every month, three months, or whenever the customer’s package expires, their subscription will automatically renew, charging their original payment method. With this convenient service, web hosting companies can retain more customers and prevent any payment lapses from occurring.

Window's 8 is set to receive its first update on June 26 and Microsoft says current users will be able to upgrade for free. Rumor has it, the popular Start menu will be back along with a more classic-looking user interface.

Our guess is that these rumors will come to fruition on June 26, the official release date of Windows 8.1. Window's 8 received a luke warm welcome last fall; the layout was such a drastic departure from the traditional look and feel of its predecessors. Will 8.1 give Microsoft the boost it needs to regain its popularity? Here's what to expect:

Windows 8 Update

For months, Microsoft was calling its forthcoming update Windows Blue; that was just a codename. With the fancy name gone perhaps we can focus on what really matters; the user experience. Though Microsoft hasn't confirmed anything, the Windows 8.1 promises a more personalized experience including but not limited to: 50/50 split screen apps, additional tile options, SkyDrive improvements and better syncing ability. Of course, new drivers will be included to ensure all the latest updates are in fact, usable. Good old Windows explorer will get an update too, likely to arrive alongside Windows 8.1 in late June.

Internet Explorer 11

According to various forums and torrent sites, functionality has dramatically improved. Users will be able to sync active tabs (think chrome and firefox), easily access their download history and restart their browsing session if they happen to get kicked off.

The Windows 8 metro touch navigation feature is likely to stay allowing users to toggle back and fourth between touchscreen and the normal users interface.

The Windows Legacy

Upholding the legacy of previous editions is no easy task but Microsoft says it is pleased with the results. OEMs will begin shipping computers and tablets with 8.1 later this fall and the Windows store now has 70,000 apps for download.

Trends suggest that the PC is on its way out, and with tablet and smartphone sales soaring, it's hard to deny that claim. Everyone loves to give Microsoft a hard time for releasing a version of Windows that gives up on tradition. What people fail to realize is that this was the plan all along. Window's 8.1 will continue to blur the lines between a mobile and desktop OS. How much of an improvement Windows 8.1 will make is anyone's guess; the world will soon find out come June 26. Stay tuned.

Streamers

With an increasing number of media streamers, media players and other devices available to access saved media, how can you be sure that you are making the right purchase?

First, you must consider how you will be using the device. Are you going to be streaming music and video from the Internet? Do you have saved videos, photos or music on your computer that you would like to view on your television or are you solely looking for a device that lets you watch Hulu or Netflix?

While some classify media streamers and media players in the same category, there is, in fact, a distinction. A media player uses your home network and allows you to stream videos that you have saved onto your computer; a media streamer connects to the Internet or an external hard drive to play other files besides the media you have saved. Before you make an investment into one of these devices, here are some things to consider:

Streaming vs. Downloading

If you will be using a device to connect to Amazon, Hulu, Spotify, Rhapsody or Pandora, you will need a media streamer that provides these online streaming services. For example, the Roxu Box is great for streaming but you must download special software to play your files. The WD TV Live can stream from these providers, yet also allows you to play downloaded files. The Boxee Box can find saved files and organize them for you, while the Netgear NEO TV 500 will play almost any of the files on your home network but does not support media streaming.

Features and Customization Vs. Ease of Use

Think about who will be using the device; If your grandmother cannot send a text message without difficulty, is she going to be able to operate a media player or streamer?

The Roku Box, arguably the most simple media streamer to navigate, or the WD TV Live with its simple menus and large icons may be better choices. The Boxee Box or Netgear’s NeoTV boast many features, yet demand the users take time to learn the systems.

Storing Your Files

If you are running out of room on your computer and require a media device to store your files, some media players feature built-in memory or allow you to connect an external USB hard drive. This is useful not only because you will free up your computer space, but these devices also let you play your files directly from the system.

Compatibility

Most media players can handle nearly any file format including those used for iTunes, as well as other video formats. Make sure you check the specifications on the player to ensure that it will play the file types which you have saved in your media libraries.

Apple TV

Apple TV media streamers are easy to understand for those familiar with the iOS software. Although its services rely heavily on buying or renting videos from the iTunes store, you also have more options when playing them on an iPad 2, iPhone 4s or newer. Additionally, you can choose to “mirror” the process so that the movie you watch on the iPad 2 will play on your Apple TV simultaneously.

Television with Built-in Player Vs. Standalone Player

A variety of televisions, Blu-ray player and video game consoles come with built-in playback capabilities. The video player doesn’t need to go through an additional device to play, thus maintaining video quality. On the other hand, standalone media players have greatly decreased in size and you shouldn’t have any problem moving one from room to room or taking it with you when you travel. If you are in the market for a new media device player, think about exactly what you are looking for before you make a purchase.

Call it a comeback, call it a revival but BlackBerry, yes BlackBerry is planning to revive itself by offering a low-cost smartphone to emerging markets.

BlackBerry showed off the Q5, a brightly colored smartphone with a 3 inch touchscreen and BlackBerry Classic keyboard it hopes will regain the market it lost to Apple and Samsung.

BlackBerry Q5

The smart-phone maker is targeting Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America specifically. An expectant launch data is planned for early July. The brightly colored smart-phones will be available in orange, pink, red and white. Bright colors aside, the Q5 looks remarkably similar to the BlackBerry Q10, the companies top-of-the-line device. Blackberry will also release an update of the BlackBerry 10 software this coming Tuesday. Striking while the iron is hot BlackBerry also announced plans to bring its popular messaging app, BBM, to Android and iOS.

BBM for iOS and Android

Perhaps BlackBerry has come to terms with the fact that Android and iOS are the two most dominant mobile operating systems in the world, otherwise they wouldn't be offering BBM to iOS and Android users. The messaging app launched last year and received rave reviews.

By sharing BBM with iOS and Android users BlackBerry is essentially bringing the BB10 platform to users who wouldn't normally use a BlackBerry product. If BlackBerry's latest offerings are a success the company might just stand a chance. Will the Q5 and BBM be enough to revive the brand? Tell us your thoughts in the comment section below.

NGD (Next Generation Data) has opened Europe's largest data center in Whales, but 750,000 sq.ft is a lot of space to fill.

NGD says it's up to the task and offers some unique insight into the European market concerning the ever-increasing price of data center space.

The biggest selling point is however, the high level of security NGD's Welsh data center offers.

Data Center Security

The Welsh government originally built the facility for LG but LG abruptly pulled out of the deal following the crash of their stock market in 2004. The facility was vacant for years until the Welsh government was able to regain control of the facility - a place that was hidden behind huge boulders and security fencing.

The people of Whales wondered for what purpose the high-security facility was built. NGD initial reaction was that the facility was too big but a unique deal from the Welsh government sealed the deal. NGD says it got sick of paying the high costs of data center space in London and that the 750,000 sq.ft facility will allow them to offer data center and co-location space at a much reasonable price. International companies will no doubt be drawn to the facility for its high-security. SMB's looking for cheaper co-location space outside of London stand to benefit as well.

No risk, No Reward

NGD says the risk was well worth it as it has nearly 60 % more space to offer its tenants. Over 400,000 sq ft is hard-wired to handle the needs of a data-center or co-location client. Although, NGD is still hard at work trying to lease that space to potential clients, they were quick to point out that Whales has lower labor costs, lower utility costs and the land isn't prone to natural disaster like other - less secure locations in Europe. NGD expects to see an annual growth rate of 28 %. If the London market is forced to lower prices due to competition in Whales the Welsh data center will experience even higher growth rates in the years to come.
