What better way to celebrate World Goth day than with stuff I should have posted to the site a looonnng time ago!

Today's sketch is a picture of the lovely belly dancer Denise!

This portrait I had a lot of ups and downs. I did several versions of this piece. Though I am having trouble finding my original sketches. Though, you are not missing much by not seeing them. I knew from the start I wanted to do a pencil sketch and add color later on the computer. At the time I originally requested pictures to draw I lacked the skills to add the color properly. I only wish I had made this much bigger so I could really get the details right but for a sketch I'm pretty happy with it.

My scanner keeps trying to "fix" my shading and make everything gray. I need to do something about that.

Looking back at it I admit I gave her hair the majority of the picture, but can you really blame me? She has a gorgeous head of hair. I took some liberties with her jewelry as well.

Goth on Vacation: Where have I been?

So you all may have noticed an absents of activity or not. Or you are probably use to my hectic posting schedule and did not notice at all. Well where have I been? On a brief vacation!

My significant other took me on a trip to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.
It was a well needed vacation and I just wanted to share with you a few of the pictures we took there.

Both parks were fun but I had more fun at Islands of Adventure then at Universal Studios. My favorite roller coaster was the hulk and The new Harry Potter themed area was amazingly fun! As far as Universal studios go my favorite was the Return of the Mummy themed ride. I only wish that ride was longer. But my SO and I had a great time on all the rides we went on. The non roller coasters were also great, such as Shrek 4D. I ate so many churros and he ate at every other dip-n-dots.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was being recognized by a reader of this blog! That was the first time I was recognized in real life! It made me feel like an internet celebrity. So shout out and thanks to Rayne (I know this isn't your real name but you know who you are) for making my vacation even cooler!

Cultural Identity in Hair Part 1: My Dread Loc Story

Well it is black history month again! And this topic has been meaning to be revisited: hair. Everyday online I see lots of debates over natural hair and locs. Is natural hair becoming popular because of a passing fad or is it because of deeper logic. This is a two part post that starts with a quick run through of my own hair back story. I once had an old couple from the islands ask me if my hair was a cultural choice? I stared at them confused for a moment. They then clarified and said they meant religious. I told them no and they responded with Oh so its just a hair style. No it isn't just a hair style. Many other woman of color would agree with me when I say natural hair is deeply rooted in my identity.

Lets flash back to when I was nine years old. My mother had my hair chemically straightened because my hair was becoming to much of a task to comb and brush. Unfortunately I had enough of my mother's Native American hair for my hair to be to sensitive for the chemicals but not enough for my hair to be naturally straight. So my hair fell out and I had to visit a dermatologist for my medically dry scalp. lets move forward to middle school years wear I was forced to wear a ponytail wig. I HATED that monstrosity. It was uncomfortable unlike the braid in weave you use in the cornrows I would get during the summer. One day in gym class my weave flew off of my head. It felt like it was the most embarrassing thing that can happen to a middle school girl. I refused to wear it again soon after that. In middle school I remember being told by people, even close friends, that I would be prettier with straightened hair.

In 9th grade I decided to get locs. I wanted to be able to get a natural hairstyle I could maintain myself with out having my mom braid my hair in a childlike hairstyle. I did my research and had my local salon put in twist. That first year was rough my locs did not loc for eight months and by trial and error I learned my dreads' needs. That first year I had my locs retwisted at a salon so that they would be done properly. After they locked I figured out how to do it myself. Years later I still love my locs and I feel so proud of my hair. I dye my locs different colors and make sure I re twist my roots often.

As far as natural hair becoming a fad, I would like to think it isn't. When I wear my locs I become a symbolic message to every little black girl, that sees me, that they are beautiful. I once had an entire class of elementary students (mostly little black girls) tell me how much they loved my hair. It made my day, not because of the compliment because of what they meant. I could see in their eyes that they connected with seeing someone my age with natural textured hair that was bright and colorful. I only wish I had seen some one when I was young who would verify that my hair was beautiful who had hair like me. I admit I am very biased toward natural textured hair but I do not have a problem with those who straighten or use weave. I just do not believe in starting such methods on younger children; as it often is. I think this natural hair revival is healthy for young boys and girls of color. Through my hair I became sure of who I was and realized that the euro centric standard of beauty that is shoved down people of colors throats every generation was not needed in my hair.

Going To Nashicon 2013

This year I will be attending Nashicon; an anime convention in Columbia South Carolina. I will be at Rougebara's booth at Artist's Alley. If some of you recall Rougebara is the creator and artist of Mysteries of Pym (aka the artist who has not been updating Mysteries of Pym). Also The Mysteries of Pym website has been temporarily taken down until its imminent relaunch! In the mean time check out Rougebara's Tumblr Here!

Rougebara will be selling art, commissions, as well as there will be free looks at Mystery of Pym relaunch material!

Nashicon is a relatively small and short con. It is only two days long; Saturday April 13th and Sunday April 14th. And it is also a very inexspensive con. At the door registration for attending both days is $20.

Blog is Back Up and Running

My absence was longer than expected. I came down with a nasty virus as well as Got-use-to-not-bloggingitis. I haven't given up on blogging but there are probably going to be some changes around here. I know, I know, I make update post a lot but this time I kind of have to make changes.

A simple animated doodled documenting my ever changing hair

Since getting a new drawing tablet I have been drawing none stop and researching all that I can about animation. I know I have been doing reviews on animated shows and characters, but I would like to start incorporating more of my love for animation in this blog. So be sure to expect more art post. There will probably be the addition of a portfolio page or at least and update of my photos page of some of my work and inspiration.

Once again the schedule might need some adjusting. The posting days will remain the same but every last week of the month there will be no written post or YouTube video but instead maybe just a look into whatever project I am working on as a sort of filler so I won't get burnt out and disappear for weeks at a time.

As well as I've been avoiding social media for a while as far as Facebook and such goes.I'm debating getting a twitter account so instead of making update post and such when something is changing, or I wont be posting, or if a new video is up, or I'm going to an event...etc I can just post it there. I don't want to create one though if it won't be useful to anyone. So I'm taking a poll! In the top right corner there is poll on whether or not you would follow a twitter for this site.

P.S. I did some touching up to the header. The one before was created before I got my tablet so it was a bit rough since it was created using a computer mouse. I'm thinking about making some more aesthetic changes so let me know what you think!

Why the lack of post

Currently a lot has been happening which has delayed and will delay the schedule. New semester started last week. I have not quite settled into the new schedule. Since my school schedule changed my work schedule is changing as well. Most importantly my mom was in the hospital and she is home now but I think it best if I keep an eye on her. Once things get back to normal the blog and video schedule will become regular again.

Goth Girl's Guide to Under Garments

Some of you might remember the Complicated Clothes post. Well in that article there was one topic I kind of passed over; Underwear! For some of us our under things can be just as complicated as our outer clothes. Which adds to the difficulty of getting ready for your day; as well as removing it all before bed.

Working at an underwear store has really taught me how odd my undergarment habits are. This insight was given to me by the more elderly customers. The older women always come in the store ask me abut an item that isn't very popular then go on about how someone my age either has never heard of it or has no use for it. This happens most with under slips. (It is REALLY hard to find slips of any kind nowadays.) Little do they know a lot of what they are looking for I own and wear all the time.

Being into the Gothic style that I enjoy leads me into having to wear a lot of underwear deemed vintage in concept. Not only that but it leads to a combination of very photo shoot style underwear. We all see the sexy Goth girl pictures online but in all seriousness a lot of gothic clothing requires thigh highs, garter, garter belt, and a corset.

Here is a list of some Gothic Underwear basics

Under sleeves - sometimes you need sleeves if you have a short sleeve shirt. A cheep way to make these is cut the crouch out of tights (fishnet works best) and use the hole you cut out as a head hole and stick you arms in the legs. Cut holes at the feet when necessary
Waist cinchers - a step below a corset; tend to be less visible under clothes. Helps with posture and gives an hourglass shape.
Pantyhose and/or tights
Leggings
Bloomers - I use thick boyshort panties as bloomers under less full skirt.
Garter belt - Some thigh highs now come with resistant in the band to prevent slipping down but others do not so a garter belt is very useful plus it looks sexy and timeless.
corsets- Some of us like to wear it under others over either way it is a great item of clothing and underwear.
Undershirts- both sheer and regular
Slips- I tend to use half slips more than full slips. most dresses and skirts come with an inner liner so you don't need one but every now and there is a very thin dress or skirt where a slip is needed.

I hope everyone had a wonderful new year! I spent mine watching Doctor Who with my mom while my dog whimpered at the sound of the fireworks outside.

Here is today's sketch! Thank you to Kels from Let Me Tell You About a Girl I Know ! She is a Renaissance performer; which looks like a lot of fun.

Had difficulty with this one. My original sketch was not a close up but I felt it was off and scrapped it before I got to far along. This one I can tell has its flaws The mouth and jaw is the main problem area, no matter how I tried I just was not happy with it. Once again I did not go into details on the clothes to much. I chose to focus more on her face.

My only regret is wishing I had scene the angle of the jaw better. Some times when you draw portraits you get your basic lines and then go into a sort of trance. When you snap out of it is when you see that a few of your basic lines were wrong which is what can cause a portion or a whole sketch to be wrong. I didn't realize the mouth was off till way later. It looks more like i drew her right after the picture was taken and her smile sort of dwindled cause she wasn't posing for a picture.

Sell Your Soul Submissions: part 1

A long long time ago on a blog post etc... I asked for readers to send me pictures of themselves for me to use to practice my drawing skills. I started drawing them hated how they were turning out and scraped them. Then proceeded to put off posting them. Well today the first one is up. I will be releasing these one to two at a time in no particular order.

Thank you to Caasi of diarrhea of the brain for sending me a lot of pictures to choose from. Also thanks for the link to the lipstick!

I had a lot of fun with this sketch. I didn't put detail into the clothing or earrings but got the basic shape down with a few lines. Its still rough but I think I got your expression down pretty well.The slightly faded black lipstick gave me a bit of trouble and the neck too. I loved drawing your eyebrows. (Drawing people always makes you say creepy things like that.) I just wish my scanner wouldn't auto brighten everything I do I'm going to have to fix that in the settings.

Anyway, Everyone please let me know what you think!

Also I'm not ignoring the obvious. Due to technical and Artisitc difficulties the latest Billy and Mandy video has been postponed once again. It will either be up Wednesday or next Saturday. Had a great Holiday!

Hope you all are enjoying your holidays and time off! I went to a work party/dinner and spent time with my family. The dinner was... hmmm.. interesting to say the least. I got to wear my vinyl sundress to the event. It's been ages since I wore it last. It was nice getting out the house though. I really need to go out more but going outside seems to disagree with my internet dependency.

Don't get to wear this as often as I like. It's sooo shiny!

Anyway, I got a lot of color pencils from my little sister for Christmas which made me feel guilty about the send your soul submissions I needed to redo. So those are under way at the moment. My two biggest gifts are in the mail currently. I'm getting a Wacom tablet and Stop motion pro. I can't wait to play around with the new software! In the meantime the time off has been wonderful and cooking with my family went rather smoothly. The gifts my family gave each other were all well received.

I love my new moisturizer

I get lots of questions about my hair. Especially from those looking into starting dreads. One of the most common questions is, what products do I use? Since I originally started my locs, back in 2006, (if i recall right) I have tried many different loc products. Most leaving residue or not accomplishing anything. After many trials and experiments the perfect brand was made clear! Jamaican Mango and Lime is one of the best brands I have ever tried. Not only do their products work they also smell amazing. Their scalp treatments work wonders. Unfortunately they have changed their original to be more like their medicated formula so now it smells more minty.

For anyone who is having difficulty finding a gel to use with their dreads try Jamaican Mango and lime locking gel. It smells like tropical fruit and leaves minimum residue at the most. This gel last a long time; weeks longer than other gels I have tried. Their shampoo and Conditioner is great too. These two products are probably the best smelling out of all of their products! The conditioner leaves my hair feeling soft and the bottle goes a long way.

Recently I started trying their Cactus products. I found an amazing moisturizer which will now be apart of my daily routine! Hair hasn't been this soft since I started my dreads!

Once again here are my favorite episodes of Billy and Mandy. This time from season 4! I even managed to get the video up at a reasonable time! Also some of you might have noticed the changes happening to the site these last few weeks. Such as the new header and the rearranging of a few things. I've been trying to make the site easier to navigate. The about me is now at the bottom of the site (this might change later if an about me page is created). The navigation bar is now below the header, the old video page is gone and now the video option goes straight to the YouTube channel.Also, the YouTube channel has been given a facelift.

The biggest change on this site that I wanted to make everyone aware of its purpose is the new tumblr widget in the right sidebar. This widget shows the colormegoth tumblr feed. There you can find cool pictures, articles and videos. Also when I start back with vlogs I will not post them to the site, like how this video is, but instead post them to YouTube and tumblr. To know when there is new vlogs you can either subscribe to me on YouTube, follow me on tumblr, or just keep an eye on my tumblr feed in the corner.

Cyber Monday Haul

I skipped out on the whole store front this past black Friday. All my shopping was done online and I'm quite happy with how it went. I got everything on my list.
I ordered some movable clamp desk lamps. These are great for stop motion lighting. Two big light for the main lighting and back lighting and a small lamp for fill lighting. All together it was about $45 with no shipping.

My favorite purchase is my 3 terabyte external hard drive! Now It will take me a while to run out of space. Thanks to this device I've been able to start making videos again. I managed to find an external hard drive that works with mac and windows for about $120; that's great for the amount of space I have now! Another electronic purchase was a last minute pair of skull candy headphones. My old pair had died on me a while back and I hate lugging around my giant headphones everywhere and these were on sale for $7.99.

I also bought a few things from Lip-Service. One item I have to send back it is just to big. Apparently Ive lost enough weight for their size medium to be loose on me. Its really annoying but maybe I will gain the weight back this winter.

I'll be sure to post pictures of the rest of my new winter clothes soon!

It really is to warm still for me to wear a lot of long sleeves I'm hoping that changes soon.

The Devil's Carnival: Movie Review

As I'm sure you all know last month The Devil's Carnival was released on DVD. The Devil's Carnival was created by the same people who brought us Repo The Genetic Opera. I am a very big Repo fan for many reasons and was looking forward to Zdunich's new film. Well I finally got around to seeing so lets take a look.

First off, I tried not to compare it to Repo. This is a separate work and should be treated as such; like how Shock Treatment is separate from Rocky Horror. With that said, I was still thoroughly disappointed. I can neither like nor hate this film but I am also unable to be neutral toward it.
First thing that didn't sit well with me is the pace. I'm aware this is a relatively short film but it was still very rushed. Very few slow moments outside of the performance sections.

Speaking of the performances lets talk about the songs. A lot of the songs were weak and others had potential but were often cut short either by their execution or vocals For example, some of the first songs, The Devil's Carnival and 666 both had potential (666 more than the former in my opinion). Alexis Vega's voice is weak and I wasn't expecting much from her vocally but her voice is just to sweet to sound sinister or leering which is what the songs she performs call for. Beautiful Stranger had to much going on in the scene for me to focus on the song and the vocals were a bit odd as well. A Penny for a Tale was well shot, and performed. The lyrics could have been better but its the sort of song that grows on you though it is not as strong with out the visual performance. Trust Me was well performed and executed so was Prick Goes the Scorpion Tail and Grace For Sale; those were probably my favorites. Also worth noting is, Paul Sorvino also makes an appearance in this film with the opening song.

Lets talk about the three "protagonist": Merrywood, Tamara, and John. They each have "sins" which parallel different Aesop's fables. This is just my personal opinion and not the film critic part of me but I found John both boring and annoying. Back to film critic mode: I hated Merrywood! The overacting was way to much for me. A tiny bit of subtly would have been nice for her character. Tamara's character had one of the best parallels as well as some of the best songs surrounding her story. But I still found faults with her actions during her life being considered a "sin".

Finally, I really think the mystery of the trailers didn't help the movie but were a great promotion for the touring show. That said most issues I have with the movie can be summarized by saying the live show was better. From clips I've seen online of the touring performance the stage production is a hundred times better. That's the problem. A lot of this film was more appropriate for the stage. The acting, the performances, etc...

Overall the movie was not perfect and those who saw The Devils Carnival Touring show got a better experience than those of us who watch the movie. The movie does have a lot of good performances, visuals, and cinematography that makes it at least looking into.

It seems that I could not escape the same fate of last year. There is something about late October that keeps me too busy to make post. This year was not as bad as last year but I still had midterms to focus on. But I will be returning shortly after my very long unannounced hiatus.

Well we all know what day it is and I bet most of you have exciting candy and or alcohol based plans. As for me I am planning to do some design and art homework and curl up with a movie or two. Now anyone else hoping to curl up with a Halloween appropriate film I suggest Andy Warhol's Dracula or Andy Warhol's Frankenstein. Their real titles being Blood For Dracula and Flesh For Frankenstein. They are sister films though I do not recall which was created first and which one was more of an after thought production wise. They are both over the top and I consider them probable influnces for The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Seriously watch these two films and take note of all the similarities. These movies predate the Rocky Horror Picture show by a few years so it is very possible that they influenced Richard Obrien's Work. Either way these two films are very worth looking into if you have not already seen them.

I finally got around to seeing Frankenweenie and I must say it was excellent. The best way to describe this film is the embodiment of everything Burton. The subtle hints to classic Burton were everywhere for detail oriented fans. For example one of the characters was Staring Girl for his children poetry series and also from the web series based on his poems and illustrations.

The references to old horror and Frankenstein was very in your face but done lovingly. Original Frankenweenie fans can appreciate him staying true to his original short film and also making a film that was even darker than the original (He probably did this to spite Disney who did not release the film til the 80s because they deemed it "too scary for children"). If your a pet owner this movie will make you ridiculously sad just a warning.
