Hello!

It's Constance again! Even though I am in Quebec or New York, whatever. Didn't time this post perfectly. For some reason, I feel like I am writing a will... Anyway! Today's Idea Friday again! Our theme is diy bracelets, and since I love making jewelry (but not wearing it), I found 15 ideas.

Project of the Week 11- Pink Gown

Hello!

It's Constance again for the eleventh project of the week!

This time, I did a watercolour painting of a girl in a pink gown, inspired by One Paper Addict's fashion illustration. Here's the process.

First, I started off with an outline of her figure, in pencil, on watercolour paper.

I painted in her skirt. I used a watered down mixture of vermilion, rose, and violet, and I added thicker layers along the edges of the skirt.

I painted in the top ruffles a darker shade, but kept the rest of the top the same shade as the skirt. I added a little bit of salt to create a salt resist texture, so the bodice will look like it is sparkling (but as you can see, I slightly over did it).

Then, I painted in the hair a pale shade of burnt sienna. After wards, I went over it with a darker shade of burnt umber. I added a few flowers and a headband.

The skin was a bit tricky. I mixed an extremely watery shade of burnt sienna, yellow, and white to give her a base porcelain tone. After, I mixed in burnt umber to darken the shade. I used that for the shadows.

Finally, I traced over all the outlines and coloured in her face. For the cheeks and lips, I used a concentrated shade of vermilion, but dabbed it away with tissue.

That's it then! This wasn't really a tutorial, this just described how I painted this. But you can still try this out for yourself. Send us a picture at colourfuldecorationsemail (at) gmail (dot) com. See you!

Project of the Week 10- Tissue Paper Ballerina

Hi...

It's RuoBing again for the tenth project of the week.

This time, my project will not be a diy, but a sketch I did this week. It's a cute ballerina with a tissue paper dress and hair bow tie. There aren't any steps pictures though... Just wanted to share this.

I think this turned nicely. Basically, I sketched an outline of a little girl dancing, just because I like dancing myself. Then, I coloured her dress and hair in. Finally, I added the tissue paper to give the picture some texture. The bow tie looked great on her brown hair. I may trace the arms and legs later... but that's it!

Project of the Week 9- Diy Jean Back Pocket

Hello!

This is Constance and it's my ninth project of the week! Today's tutorial will be very fun.

And I will be sharing this super easy jean back pocket diy tutorial. It can be done in about 10 minutes, so I rated this tutorial difficulty a...

I was inspired by a previous Idea Friday, which you can see here. I basically followed the tutorial from the braided neck t-shirt from Her New Leaf, which you can find here, except I sewed it onto the back pocket of my jeans (which I felt were in serious need of decorating).

What you'll need

-sharp fabric scissors

-needle and thread

-an old pair of jeans

How to make it

Step 1: Cut slits about three and a half centimeters long, and one centimeter apart. If you want a larger braid, make longer slits and cut them farther apart, but keep the proportions in mind. The slits on the ends should be about half the size of the others, or else there will be a rather large hole at the edge when you begin to braid.

Step 2: Now begin to braid. You pick up one loop, and pull it under the other. Then you pick up another one, and pull it under the previous. Continue doing this until you see a braid form. Kira at Her New Leaf explains this better in her tutorial.

Step 3: Sew the last loop, which should be the end of the braid, to the back pocket. Be careful not to sew through the pocket, or else you might find it hard to put things in there... This is pretty basic.

Now smooth out your pocket and do the second one. Now get rocking in your newly decorated jeans!

However, I did not braid the second pocket, because I am saving it for another project... It's going to be a grand surprise. As soon as I get some hex nuts.... (hint hint). Thanks for reading,

Google Comments

Hello!

I recently turned on this slightly annoying feature on Blogger called "Google Comments." It basically mixes in the comments on the blog from Google Plus with the regular comments that come from the blog. Sounds pretty good, right?

That was until I saw a few problems... First of all, you need a G+ account to post, so it might be a bit of a nasty shock (ok, I'm exaggerating) when a non google user tries to write a nice, long comment, and then realizes he/she has to get a Google account to be able to post. Another issue is that if your settings are on private when you comment, then others can't see your comments, unless they are in your circles. I saw that google comments would limit the feedback RuoBing and I get from our posts, so I disabled it.

Now it seems that all the comments made with google comments have disappeared now too. I'm really sorry about the inconvenience, everyone. Just bear with me. Thank you,

Hello, again!

This is Colourful Decorations's first guest post/tutorial! On twitter, I saw some great bookmarks Kym (@pure1991pure) made, and I asked her to make a tutorial for this! It looks great, and I will definitely be trying this out.

Tutorial

Step 1: Start off with a ribbon of your choice and a strip of plastic (best to use a forum plastic or cardboard because this will go in the meddle to keep your bookmark forum and flat). The length of your plastic will be the length of your bookmark, make the ribbon long enough to go around the whole plastic and overlap a little at the ends. The pick where I'm holding back a little bit of the ribbon is to show that the ribbon is overlapping at the end, and I will explain what I mean at the top.

Step 2: Fold the ribbon in half to find the center and then glue the center of the plastic to the centre of the ribbon. You can see that I used a hot glue gun as my gluing material. Before gluing, work out which end will be the top of your bookmark. DO NOT put glue at the top of that end because when you get to the sewing part you don't want to be putting your needle through the glue.

Step 3: Now all you need to do is glue the whole thing together (I find that a strip of glue through the meddle should be enough. You can put more but know that if your ribbon is thin you will see the glue through the ribbon. At the last bit of gluing, make sure you glue the ribbon to overlap. This will make it stay in place more.

Step 4: Now you have the main body of the bookmark time to decorate. Chose a small strip of ribbon that will be the hanger and something nice that will make your bookmark look pretty. Make sure that you burn the ends of all the ribbon you use, this will stop the ribbon from coming apart. Fold your small hanger strip ribbon in half and then sew it to the top of the bookmark (end without glue) after sewing it on all you need to do now is glue on your that little "something" that is going to make your bookmark look good.

I did some different ones too (the ones with a strip of ribbon down the meddle) but their just the same but instead of a short strip hanger ribbon make it long enough to go around the whole bookmark and to make the loop at the top. And instead of sewing it on, you glue it on.

Kym's tutorial is great, and simple to follow! I'll be trying this out soon. Happy bookmarking,

Diy Braided Headband

Hello!

In this diy, I, Ruobing will be guiding you through the tutorial of this amazing braided headband! These headbands are stretchy, comfortable yet attractive at the same time. An amazing 20 minute job will have you this headband, fitting for hair up and hair down. Sorry, this is my first tutorial, so it might not be the greatest.... But it's pretty simple, so the tutorial difficulty is only 2!

What you'll need

-An old/used shirt, any colour would do

-Scissors

-A ruler

-A marker (not shown in picture above)

-A needle and thread (not shown in picture above)

How to make it

Step 1: Cut strips out of the T-shirt. We will need 6 strips, about 1 and a half inches thick, each the length of one side of the T-shirt. Use the marker to outline the strips, shown above.

Step 2: Now, we can start cutting out the strips of cloth.

After finishing cutting, you should have 6 strips of the same length and width to work with.

Step 3: This is slightly tricky, which is braiding together all 6 strands of cloth. It will take some time to finish this. You can learn how to do the six strand braid here.

Step 4:

After you finish braiding all the strips, sew together the ending, like you did with the beginning. Now this is the final step. Take your last piece of cloth, and use it to sew together the two ends of the braid you had just made.

Now you are done! This is what the final product should look like, and it works wonders. I hope you have enjoyed the first tutorial I have done on Colourful Decorations, and I hope you like the craft that I have chosen to present. Thanks to all,

Project of the Week 8- Diy Sock Puppet

Hello, again!

Who loves.... sock puppets? I bet you do, and so do I. So that's what we're going to make for my eighth project of the week. And guess what? This is another diy, which means you can make this all by yourself at home!

What you'll need

-sharp scissors

-a small, stiff board (should be the size of your hand or larger)

-liquid glue

-miscellaneous fabric (the colour of the puppet's tongue)

-two buttons

-whatever extras you want to put on your puppet (eg. pipe cleaners, rabbit ears, etc)

-needle and thread

-and of course, a sock!

How to make it

Step 1: Pick a sock! Try to make sure it's some old sock, like this eccentric one I found in my sock bin one day. It's also better if you have already lost the other sock (or else you're wasting a whole pair!). Stick your hand in it, making sure the heel of the sock faces outwards, like a hump. Get a feel for it. Now invert the top of your sock like in the top right image, and close your hands, so it turns into the mouth I photographed in the bottom picture.

Step 2: Now take your stiff cardboard or bristol board, and cut out a rounded rectangle, about the size of your palm. This will shape your puppet's mouth, or else it will be difficult for it to talk. The paper doesn't have to be the colour of the tongue, because we will glue a fabric over it. Now fold your board in half.

Step 3: Glue your miscellaneous fabric onto the hard board. It doesn't have to fit perfectly, as long as it covers the whole surface of the board. Now trim the edges a bit, and glue it onto the board. Take the excess fabric, fold up the edges, and glue them onto the back of the board. It should look perfectly smooth from the front, like in the bottom right picture.

Step 4: Insert the mouth into the puppet. Try to center it as well as possible. After you have it placed, just hold your mouth down (refer to the bottom picture), to secure the glue. You should keep your puppet in this position for a 4-6 minutes.

Step 5: This step is optional, but if you want to secure your mouth (it's peeling off, or not stable), you can do a few stitches around the whole rounded rectangle of the mouth. If you open your mouth completely, it will look something like the image above. Also, make sure your stiches are as close to the edge of the mouth as possible, or else it will be hard to fit your hand through.

Step 6: Next are the eyes. Take your two buttons and sew them on. Try to use thread that is the same colour as the sock.

Step 7: Now for the fun part! Decorating (why else are you reading this at Colourful Decorations)! I took what was left of the fabric I used on my tongue, and made a mustache. I also made my sock puppet a necklace, made of a pipe cleaner and some beads! Do what you want here! Some great ideas are yarn for hair, sunglasses, and rabbit ears!

Diy Colourful Striped Card

I'm back!

I've been starting to do some diy's (do it yourself) recently, but I just haven't been calling them diy's. Really though, you can definitely make my projects at home, and on your own, so... sure why not? Diy, here I come! Anyway... today's diy will be this cool striped card I found in a Mother's Day craft book that I mentioned in my last post. Here's the tutorial I was following. Click on the image to enlarge it.

I decided to recreate this, for my friend's birthday card! However, instead of following the extremely specific instructions explained in the book, I took a more flexible approach, grabbing ideas from the images above the steps. Here's my tutorial.

What you'll need:

-watercolour paper (or any thick paper that can withstand paint)

-black felt tip pen

-metallic marker (preferably gold)

How to make it:

Step 1: Grab a blank piece of watercolour paper. I took advantage of a premade card template I got from Strathmore's Artist Papers, which I also used here. It will be the size of the card.

Step 2: Start painting stripes. Try to use lots of different colours that match together. You can paint blots over your stripes, paint in dashes, paint squiggly lines over the stripes, etc, but the stripes should all be going either vertically or horizontally (which is what I did). You can leave gaps of different sizes, which is where the gold and black marker will fill in.

Step 3: Wait for the paint to dry. Now take your black felt tip marker and gold pen to decorate the spaces between the stripes. Get creative: use x's, dashes, arrows, squiggly lines, and more! This is a good time for you to check out the sample cards from the book here.

Project of the Week 7- Watercolour Flowers

Hi, guys!

This is the seventh project of the week (wowee). Yeah, I say that every day... Anyway.

Today, we're going to make a cool painting of watercolour flowers, which will look like this! I was originally inspired by a blog post from Bella Dia, which you can read here. I found it when I was looking at pictures of watercolour flowers, and I saw this picture.

It looked pretty cool to me, so I decided to try out the tutorial for my project of the week! Here we go.

Step 1: Start off with a piece of watercolour paper (any orientation is fine). Wet it with your largest paintbrush.

Step 2: Make some watercolour splotches on the paper. Use various shades of green to represent the grass, and some multicoloured blobs to represent the flowers. It should look very abstract.

Step 3: Add in some drops of paint. Take a small brush and just dip it in some watery paint of any colour. Splatter it all over the paper.

Step 4: Add in the outlines of the flowers. You should wait until the paint dries. I used a blow dryer to make the process quicker, but air drying is fine too. I used the same pack of charcoal pencils as what I mentioned in my fourth project of the week here, but the person who wrote the tutorial used bamboo skewer and India ink. The flowers can be as roughly sketched as you'd like them to be. This was the final result.

Hello, there!

Thanks for hanging on to this blog! I know it's gotten very tough and annoying to follow me at times... I mean seriously: from Paint Explosion at blogger to Colourful Decorations at wordpress to Colourful decorations at blogger again! Again, thank you for continuing to read my posts. Thankfully, now, I'm stuck on blogger for good!

So, how are you guys liking the new template? I personally think it is absolutely amazing, from the apple social media icons (my favourite part) to the super cute grab button. Hello!

It's SUNDAE (just ignore my craziness, and read as Sunday)! On an extremely boring end of the week like this, I generally like to do some amateur photography. Let me share some of the various photos I took today and yesterday, along with some from way before. I took all of these photos with my iPad 3, which is just more proof of my unprofessionalness.

This is my favourite picture, and also the one I use as my iPad background. Two TTC subway transfer birds (last minute origami) that are kissing each other. I think the table goes as a nice backdrop.

Let's just say I got this strange souvenir in who knows where, but I decided it looked cool. So I hung it up in interesting places, and took pictures. This photo clearly wasn't very good because of the bright light.

This is a ball of elastic bands I made. I decided to add some other elastic bands around to give the picture a dishevelled look. I think the lighting was pretty good for this one.

The shadow looks sort of cool, although I really wish I had a nicer light switch.

Whee! Feathers all over. And if you haven't noticed, these plumes (love that word) are in the colours of my website! Turquoise, bright blue, yellow, and grey (well, black, but close enough).

Obviously, I drank this when Canada wasn't in the ice age. But I like the colour of this slushie. And it was 100% watermelon (so proud) and home-made.

This is my USB stick. Pretty cute, huh? I love the 16GB shirt.

Now here is my USB... With my mouse. I pretended that my USB was a person, and it was about to drive my mouse as a car.

Not my best picture. It looks a bit plain.

I got bored yesterday, so I dabbled so water onto my glasses. However, the background is a bit unfortunate. If you see that pink case lying around over there, it is an iPad case without the iPad. It's a lot easier to take pictures on the iPad without the case, so I took it off.

Idea Friday 2- Clean & Playful Interior Decorating

Sorry I couldn't post the idea friday yesterday... I kept on putting the blogger link for the pictures instead of the wordpress shortlinks, and it was all very strange. But thankfully, I've got it now! My regrets for the delay.

My "inspiration" for this project was that my house is currently being renovated! We're having our three washrooms and kitchen redesigned (not all at the same time, of course)! Basically, we brought home all these ideabooks (you know, the free little brochures you can get at Rona or Ikea) and flipped through them. For those of you who are unfamiliar with how the pictures are sorted out, they are grouped by style. You have different colour combinations. I wasn't really impressed with the "Deep and Luxurious" look. The colours were too deep and rich. The "Soft and Elegant" colour scheme was okay, but I thought it too boring, especially in the browns. "Mellow and Comforting" just didn't seem to suit me. However, as soon as I saw the "Clean and Playful" section, I was amazed. That was my style.

So I looked around Houzz and through some other sites for my favourite "Clean and Playful" rooms. Here are the top twelve: four for bathrooms, four for living rooms, and four for kitchens. Enjoy!

Bathrooms

Just love the turquoise walls! Makes me think of an ocean side cabin.

You might argue that it is more of a "Soft and Elegant" themed bathroom, but oh well. I do love the blue, but I think a chandelier (in the washroom?) is a bit over the top.

Oh, the bright grey makes such a fun statement! I just adore everything about this room, right down to the shape of the bathtub.

The cheerful black and white really brightens up this room! It also gives a chic, modern look to it.

Living Rooms

The bright green lightens the mood. The patterned carpet is really cool, too.

I really do enjoy looking at the these happy, yellow and grey themed bedrooms. This living room emphasizes this look nicely with the modern patterned cushions.

I think well defined, black and white stripes and polka dots add a lot to the playful look. This room used them well for sure!

The shallow grey and the dark teal blend very well together. It keeps the general mood fun, but comfortable at the same time.

Kitchens

I'm a big fan of the colours in the seafoam to baby blue range (I mean, look at the colours I used to design my site) and this kitchen certainly caught my attention. I especially like the monochrome cushions; they're subtle, yet so cute!

Now, I just couldn't help but share this, even though I only meant to share four kitchens. I usually prefer the paler colours in the "Clean and Playful" theme, but the lights sure caught my attention.

Project of the Week 6- Padlet

Hey people reading this!

I've discovered this website (also comes as an app) called Padlet. You can make an account for free here: http://padlet.com/. Padlet is a software that basically gives you a wall. This wall can be used for anything, including presentations, profiles, and collages, or even as a blog itself! You can insert most media, such as links and videos. Padlet is very simple and easy to use. Take a look at the "About Me" wall I made with Padlet! http://padlet.com/wall/colourfuldecorations

Everything about Padlet is very basic: image, title, description. You can resize images and customize the background. However, like Bamboo Paper (an app I described before here), there is something appealing about it. I think it is a very effective way to convey whatever information you want to convey. So go ahead, and create your own wall here!

Last Minute Card Making

Hello again!

Who here is guilty of leaving things to the last minute? I sure am. Yesterday was my mom's birthday, and unfortunately, I was being a bad kid and I forgot. I only thought of it about an hour before she came home. However, I found this pack of blank cards you could draw on. You can buy them, too, at Curry's, or any other retailing art store! As you can see (if you clicked the link), these cards come in many different sizes and quantities. They are also on a very good sale. The pack I purchased had twenty, standard sized cards. They even came with envelopes, which makes it a perfect gift to display your artwork in. Here is what it looks like.

They're pretty neat. Now, here is the card I sent to my mother. I had to do this in about an hour, so naturally, the painting wasn't too detailed...

The only complaints I have about this card is that it became very bumpy, after I painted it with watercolour (which is very reasonable), and that the paint seeped through a little. However, that was fixed after I pressed it under a large book. The charcoal outlining I did on it became a tiny bit smudgy, but there was nothing I could really do about that.

All in all, I think this is a great product! Nice job by Strathmore Artist Papers. So, take a look if you want. These cards are great for showcasing your art, and sending some nice wishes to anyone you know. Thanks for reading,
