I'm sorry, you can't have it both ways. Walmart uses illegal means and political clout to twist the market in its favor. That is business as usual for the mega-corps, sure, but it's not free market capitalism.

wprl,

I don't know of any successful business that does not lobby on their own behalf. It's become the American way of doing business.

How do you define the term 'market wage'? A true market wage is set by supply and demand. If WM did not pay a reasonable wage, they would not have any employees. Last I heard they had over 2 million employees worldwide. That's about 2 million people that believe their labor is worth what WM pays.

Maybe you are thinking of the prevailing minimium wages as set within the Davis-Bacon Act. Davis-Bacon was originated to keep African Americans from taking the jobs of white people during the greater depression. It has since been hijacked by big labor. I could go on about the continuing rip off by big labor under Davis-bacon, but I won't. It's a big labor sham.

As far a pay offs to foreign goverments, it is pretty typical in many countries (and Chicago), not legal, but typical. If you want to get anything done, you have to pay someone. Nothing wrong until you get caught, WM apparantly got caught.

WM buys products where they cost the least, to be able to sell them for less than their competition. It is how capitalism works, Get used to it, as it is more successful than all of the alternatives man has developed so far.

I knew right away what subdivision you were talking about on Route K. It was a part of the Jose Lindner bankruptcy. Those houses are unfinished because Lindner ran out of money and credit. They have been tied up in the bankruptcy and resulting foreclosure for a couple of years. There is, however, a good demand for that price range in that location. I understand that the property has been purchased by a new developer, and think that the existing homes will be completed and marketed in the near term. I believe they will sell shortly after completion, and additional homes will be constructed. The houses are not sitting there vacant due to lack of demand.

Another thought on big corporate farms vs. small local family farms. If all of the big corporate farms disapeared overnight, our tables would be quite bare. The small local farms could not begin to meet the demand. Something like strawberries would only be available for a week or two every year, whereas we have them almost year round from the large farms. We would not have citrus crops, as they do not grow very far north. Meals would be pretty boring, like back in the 1700's. All in all, I believe the current system works quite well.

Very true Dyann_68. And it's very sad. But things will change, slowly.
It's sad, but the death of that one boy, scared black people in this town and they started talking and preaching in church, that the refusal to talk to police was dangerous. People with the criminal thinking of Damien Doxley who call it "snitching" will end up in prison and the good folks of this town will turn the shooters in.

http://m.columbiatribune.com/news/201...

In prison there are fathering mentorship programs to help these men, the ones who want to step up and be real men,... fathers and husbands. The rest, sadly, will likely die in prison.

The police will get this hater and the younger boys in this town will see that he is not a tough guy, that he's not a man. He's an angry punk of a boy. And, he will go to the cement and steel playpen where angry babies go... for a loooooong time out.

from over the pond...
In our part of the U.K. the city council has supplied wheelie bins. Black for general rubbish, green for recycling, and brown for garden waste (grass cuttings etc.) I believe they were supplied by a German company. The black is emptied one week and the other two the following week..fortnightly. Who cleans them? It is the householders responsibility. One can still use a bin liner for the general rubbish, ( supplied by the householder/tenant) but they must be inside the bin. There is a van that follows the dustbin lorry, and cleans and disinfects the bins with water jets if requested. They charge £2 a bin. It is not financed by anyone, just private enterprise, of someone finding a need in the market.

How do you have a predetermined wage in a free market?
It sells in a market that isn't free; here.
Illegal immigrants? Don't you mean undocumented workers? If you agree that no US company should hire them, then you must also agree that they should be identified and deported, right?
You can only have things that are "extra market" in a market that is not free. You obviously don't understand the meaning of the word "free". And your term "exploitation" is nothing more than a disparaging way to say "maximizing profit". In other words, making the most you can, and keeping he most you can, something you do everyday.

Biggguy, examples are the recent bribery attempt in Mexico (we'll see, of course, but it doesn't look good for them). They buy goods from markets that are not free. They spend millions a year lobbying for laws that make the market favorable to them (working outside the market to affect competition). There was the civil suit they settled because they were hiring illegal immigrants. They don't pay employees a market wage. They routinely use sweatshop labor. This is just a few. In short they exploit every extra-market avenue available to them to shift the odds away from other businesses.

I wonder... I did go out of my way to find exactly where that subdivision was. Did you check it out? Turn left for the worst example. Turn right and about 1/4 the houses are for sale (at least that have signs out so maybe more).

I agree with Mr. Jacobs: laws are not meant to deliver injustice. But, given his praise of Hamoodi's compassion for his fellow Iraqis, I have to ask: Why did Shakir Hamoodi stay in the U.S. after finishing his graduate work at MU? Why did he NOT go back home to serve his country with the knowledge he got here? Why did he, instead, choose to stay in the U.S. and enjoy EVERYTHING that his fellow Iraqis were denied in the 1990s? I am not grudging him the right to want to make it in the land of opportunity. But the fact is, he did NOT go back home after finishing what he allegedly came here to do (obtaining a PhD in nuclear science), at a time when his country needed him most!

If the LSU fans had antlers they would have been suspended. The players were just a step behind the fans. They were not chanting and cheering but sitting on the dugout fence and holding up fake heaters. If this is the SEC I for one am sorry we joined. I hope the MU coaches keep their class and don't fall into allowing or encouraging such behavior of MU players or fans. Yes, I saw the LSU coach laugh, she thought it was funny. The coaches set the tone for players and fans and I'll stick with Earleywine everyday!

Caller No. 3, if you don't have a garage, store the bin in your back yard. When I lived in KC, I didn't have a garage. I kept my trash cans and recycling bins just outside one of the back doors. Never had a problem with raccoons, rain, etc. The recycling bin didn't have a cover, so in the winter, the cans and other recyclables sometimes would freeze together, but that was the trash guys' problem to deal with, not mine.

Also, the city-provided trash bags suck. The ties usually break long before the bag is anywhere near cinched shut. The guys on the trucks often struggle to pick up bags. (I know because I work from home and see them picking up.) One batch had so many weak spots that it looked like the night sky.

2. You seem to have a personal problem with the guy.

3. I have made no assumptions about your faith(s).

4. "Infidel" is a perfectly acceptable term to me, no matter who says it.

5? No.

6? If you feel sorry for him why do you (all) relentlessly demonize him?

7? Why can't he "ostracize" others? Because you say he shouldn't?

8. I am okay with this conversation ending anytime.

You see Damien, we, the good citizens of this community have our own page. It's called the police's Most Wanted page. And it's where we will list the names of you and other criminals who break the law and need to be in prison. What you call a "snitch" is really a good citizen who wants to see violent offenders off the streets so they can't shoot children.

It's a good thing that the people at this picnic didn't follow that chicken Damien Doxley's suggestion and keep Barnum's identity a secret. It seems like the black community in this town has had enough and are going to help the police do their job of getting these cowardly punks off our streets. Hooray, the black and white citizens of this community are working together to clean up the streets and make this a safer place for our children!
