’365 Places to Live in Columbus‘ is a page on Facebook about central Ohio real estate, communities and neighborhoods.

’365 Places to Live in Columbus’  is also a category on ColumbusBestBlog.com.  The Facebook page  was created long, long ago and neglected for a long time.   ’365 Places to Live in Columbus’  is patterned after ’365 Things to do in Columbus Ohio’ which is also a Facebook page and a category on ColumbusBestBlog.com a site about the best in Columbus.  I, Maureen McCabe am just not that good at Facebook.  Personally I don’t really like Facebook that much.   I hoped early on that Facebook would go the way of MySpace.com.  Each time there is a study that says Facebook is no longer going to  be important I hope.   So far I have not got my way.  :  – (

Like on Facebook

I get that people like Facebook.  I like Facebook a lot more than I did when I joined…  I believe I joined Facebook as a person in 2007.   I liked Twitter a lot more than Facebook back then.

People, people who like people are the luckiest people

Song lyrics… I guess the song lyrics are “People who need people.”   The Facebook page ’365 Places to Live in Columbus’  is one of two  wait make that three Facebook real estate pages I started.   The page called ‘Discover Columbus’ which featured posts from the DiscoverColumbusOH.com site which is a real estate blog affiliated with the ActiveRain real estate network.  The ‘Discover Columbus’  page is scheduled to be deleted from Facebook.   Although more people Like the ‘Discover Columbus’ Facebook page than the ’365 Places to Live in Columbus’  Facebook page, the ‘Discover Columbus’ Facebook page must die.

The ’365 Things to do in Columbus Ohio’ page on Facebook is much more successful than any real estate page I have started.  There is a link to the ’365 Things to do in Columbus Ohio’ page on Facebook in the sidebar on ColumbusBestBlog.com. There is no link here to the ’365 Places to Live in Columbus’ page on Facebook.  The url  of the Facebook page is:

I could have simply linked my Facebook business page to my HER Realtors (the real estate brokerage was Real Living HER at the time but that’s another story) website… I did not.

Pages, pages that Like Pages…

Being kind of backward when it comes to Facebook,  I just discovered today that a number of Facebook pages like the ’365 Things to do in Columbus Ohio’ Facebook page.  Some of the Facebook pages I know like the COTA page.  The ’365 Things to do in Columbus Ohio’ page probably liked the COTA page first.  Not that riding the bus is necessarily a fun thing to do in Columbus. Riding the COTA bus can be part of taking part in events in central Ohio.   The ’365 Things to do in Columbus Ohio’  Facebook page shared (re-shared) a Columbus event shared by COTA.

Nobody likes ’365 Places to Live in Columbus’   or no pages like the Facebook page… other than my three pages.   :- (

Planting Time in central Ohio

Is it time to plant things in central Ohio?  Saturday, May 11, 2013 is the annual Plant Fest in Worthington.  The Plant Fest on the Worthington Village Green is 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Saturday, May 11, 2013.

The calendar says it is time to plant. I was talking to a central Ohio arborist a week or so ago who told me we are about two weeks ahead of normal.  Last year was not normal.  Chris Bradley says we could have frost Sunday night / Monday morning… I read the Channel  10 TV meteorologist’s weather warning on Facebook.

There are other plant events in central Ohio on Saturday. The Garden Market in German Village and Gahanna has Herb Day Saturday.  There is a ‘Plant Sale and Gardening Fair’  at Chadwick Arboretum, May 10 to 11, 2013.

Flapper Time

This morning the Facebook page ’365 Things to do in Columbus Ohio’ (link in the sidebar) shared an event at Gateway Film Center as posted on ExperienceColumbus.com.  The Gateway Film Center event ties into Baz Luhrmann’s just released film ‘The Great Gatsby.’   Gateway Film Center / ExperienceColumbus.com says

“Help us bring the Jazz Age back to life with a Gatsby-style shindig. Come dressed in Roaring ’20s fashion and toast the romance of the period with drink specials Gatsby himself would’ve thirsted for.”

Another 1920s inspired event t the Ohio History Center / Ohio Village is on Saturday evening.  Their event  ‘Pleasure of the Cup – Drinks of the Speakeasy’ is Saturday, May 12, 2013 at 7:00 in the evening.

Second Saturday in May

It is time for the Gay Street Moonlight Market. The first Gay Street Moonlight Market was in April. The event is the second Saturday each month from April through___. Nice enough weather for an outdoor market.

Mother’s Day at the Columbus Zoo

Ohio Schools: There’s an app for that now!   For a limited time the phone app is FREE.   The app from the Ohio School Board Association is for all Ohio public schools, not just central Ohio.

The mobile app is for Android or iOS.  I downloaded the app onto my phone.  That is my phone…  the photo does not do it justice.

The mobile app is labeled ‘Ohio Schools’ on my phone.  Ohio schools are divided into:

• Northwest
• Northeast
• Central
• Southwest
• Southeast

Overview

Ohio schools are listed within their geographic region.  The central Ohio Schools are listed alphabetically.  The Ohio School app has way more schools in central Ohio than what I am familiar with in Franklin and Delaware counties.  When you click on a school district it gives you the address of the school district, a phone number and the school district website as well as what county the school district is in, on the Overview tab,

Admin

The second tab for each school district is the admin tab which includes the name of the district’s superintendent, the treasurer and school board members.

Buildings

Each public school district has a list of the school buildings within the school district on the tab titled Buidings. The school buildings are clickable links on the app. The pages that open identifies the school building and then provides the address, principal, phone, fax, student teacher ratio, estimated enrollment and the estimated number of teachers.  To get to an individual schools website you would have to go through the school district website on the Overview page for the district.

Facts: Ohio Schools

The final tab on the app is  labeled Facts.  The facts provided for the school district include:

• Board President of the school district
• The  report card for the school from the Ohio Department of Education
• Enrollment
• Expenditure per pupil
• Millage for the school district
• Congressional District (s)
• House District (s)

The app has a search function and you can add favorites.  I will have to look at that further.

I heard about the Ohio Schools app from the Ohio Associations of REALTORS today.  Thanks!     I thought at first I read the app cost 99 cents but reading about the app on the Ohio School Board Association site I realized the Android app is free now.  For a limited time the Ohio School app is free.

Others share “Things to do”

A thing to do in Columbus Ohio this week  is celebrate coffee and community with Crimson Coffee Cup in Clintonville.   Crimson Cup Coffee is celebrating their 22nd. anniversary on  Thursday,  May 9, 2013.

The Crimson Cup Coffee event on Facebook says:

“Join us at the coffee house to celebrate 22 years of coffee and community! We are hosting a community cupping on May 9 at 9:00am, Noon and 7:00pm. Cupping on this day is free, join us to learn more about the coffee you love.”

The event lists “Things to do’ at the local coffee house on  Thursday including  “Goodies to sample from local bakeries”  and “Face Painting from 2 – 6pm”  and  “Dizzy Doc Balloon artist from 5-7pm”  and  “A Fun, origin photo backdrop for pictures, ALL DAY!”

Usually when you look at most of the Recent Posts by Others … they are almost always shared by Maureen McCabe.  Usually because I shared them wrong at first, sharing them as me rather than as  the Facebook page.  When at first I don’t succeed I try, try again.  I am NOT a natural at Facebook…

I was thrilled with the  ‘Things to do’ shared by El Vaquero Mexican Restaurants, Crimson Cup Coffee and Ender Wiggins!

Rule(s) of thumb

Photos rule…  A photograph is almost always the best thing to reshare… on Facebook.  Computer generated graphics do not get as many views.  A photograph gets hundreds of views.  The tacky image posted on ’365 Things to do in Columbus Ohio’  got 18 views in almost 24 hours.  A photograph posted this weekend got over 300 in less time.

Putting the link to the business / organization / event link in the  box that say’s “Write something… “  is usually best to create traffic and answer questions about where and when.  I prefer a link to a website rather than a link to the Facebook page… If you share a Thing to do in Columbus Ohio on the Facebook page or any other right (post on your page or as an event and share to another page), you already have a link to your Facebook page.   Why NOT get people to your website where you have more information?   Unless you have duplicated your business’ website on Facebook your website has the answers to when and where that people are usually going to have about events and places (things to do are usually events and places.) Olentangy schools… are the best high schools in central Ohio. Or the three high schools are among the best high schools in central Ohio according to a recent report.

Olentangy high schools are among the best in central Ohio according to USNews.com  In a report that was published  April 24, 2013 the magazine, online magazine gave high marks to all three high schools in the Olentangy Local School District.  Olentangy Liberty High School is the best high school in central Ohio according to the recent report.

US News & World Reports 2013 – Best High Schools

The “Overview” for each high school in the report gives more information about:

• College Readiness Index
• Math Proficiency
• Reading Proficiency
• Student/Teacher Ratio

The report also reveals test scores and the demographics of the school body.

Olentangy Schools are among the BEST

The top ten high schools in central Ohio according to the April 2013 report from the magazine:

All three Olentangy high schools are there in the top ten high schools in the ranking!  US News ranked the high schools in the state of Ohio.  The number in parenthesis in the list above is the rank in the state according to US News.  US News refers to the high school in Orange Township as Orange High School rather than Olentangy Orange High School.

Olentangy Local School District Attendance Areas

The Olentangy Local School District site has attendance areas for the three high schools online, now.  Middle school and elementary school attendance information is available as well (link below.)   Attendance areas within a school district change.  Changes in population may make the school district “redistrict.”  Currently there are maps and a neighborhood chart for the attendance areas in the Olentangy Local School District  now.  The school district site now says  “Last updated: November 29, 2012″ of the attendance areas.

Central Ohio School  Report Cards   “Report cards” from the state for each school district and each individual school are available from the Ohio Department of Education.  The recent report cards issued in late 2012 were for the 2011 – 2012 school year.

The methodology for the ratings and rankings of the report from US News is available online (and posted previously on this site with links in this post.)  This should have been posted before Dublin Schools.  Somehow I wrote this post and did not publish it.
