Telamon, Touch Bionics win grants for expansion

State officials have signed off on $50,000 in grants headed to companies looking to expand in Central Ohio and add a combined 58 jobs.
The state Controlling Board approved $25,000 Rapid Outreach Grants for:
• Telamon Corp., an information technology contractor for the telecommunications industry. The Carmel, Ind.-based company is looking to buy new machinery and equipment for a $195,000 expansion in Columbus expected to add 38 full-time jobs.
• Touch Bionics Inc., a Scottish developer of bionic prosthetics and medical devices. The state grant will go toward a $230,000 expansion in Hilliard that could add 20 full-time jobs. Touch Bionics’ key product is the I-Limb prosthetic hand, sales of which have exceeded the company’s expectations and made the U.S. the biggest market for product, according to state documents.
The Central Ohio grants approved this week were among more than $3 million the Controlling Board approved for a dozen projects statewide expected to create more than 400 jobs.

A Day in the Life of an Entrepreneur

Hi there! My name is Kevin Uland; I am a 4th year student at The Ohio State University here in Columbus, a new associate of Social Boomerang and working part-time at the Dublin Entrepreneurial Center (DEC). As an aspiring entrepreneur, I feel lucky to spend time here at The DEC with successful startup companies, local business leaders, and witnessing inspiring developments. Just recently, I tagged along for a day with one of the newest tenants at the DEC, Andrew Spott, founder and owner of an up-and-coming integrated web agency named Vivid Front. I recorded my time with Andrew and decided to share my experience living the life of an entrepreneur at the DEC.

Although Andrew begins his day preparing like many other business leaders, his unique experience happens when he arrives at the DEC. Unlike many other offices, the DEC offers advantages for startup businesses, “The difference is in the people who work here,” Andrew says. When I asked him to name a unique feature of the DEC, Andrew replied, “The people here are building actual businesses, not just a lifestyle.”

During our interview, Andrew indicated he moved into his office on the 4th floor less than three weeks ago, but felt welcomed right away. “The tenants help support each other,” says Spott, when describing how Andrew Moon of Network Logix offered up an extra office desk at move-in.

According to Andrew, he is forming great partnerships with other tenants like Sandy Blanquera, also a DEC consultant. She introduced Andrew to new revenue and new partnership opportunities with a tenant just a few doors down. We also met with one of Andrew’s newest partnerships, Lori Crock, the founder and lead writer of WrittenImpact, “Lori has a good handle on things – the content she put together was spot-on, unique, and refined, which is what web content needs to be,” Spott stated in reference to Lori’s work.

After sitting down with Andrew and Lori, we were casually interrupted by Mike Bowers of the Small Business Development Center, as he asked for some help with web work and web advertising – two of Andrew’s strengths. So we headed over and joined Mike and a member of the DEC Virtual Community and business startup owner, Timecha Swain of Slapstik Entertainment. After receiving some insight from Andrew, Timecha replied, “You’ve been very helpful and have given me a lot of options to consider!” The DEC is an excellent resource for any business startup seeking professional help.

I observed as Andrew used Skype to communicate project details with employees, got advice from other business owners on chat and worked on a client project. I mentioned how the multi-tasking seemed effortless. Spott replied, “When you own your own business, you are always working, always communicating and always on.”

I also had a chance to join Andrew and Sandy in a meeting where they drafted some educational events for small business owners. Andrew will be conducting a few workshops on the use of Facebook pages, blogging and E-marketing for greater online exposure. “Connecting with customers has a viral nature. It’s important that everyone understands and utilizes this concept,” Andrew states. These events will be held at the DEC first quarter of 2010 and offered at no cost.

At the end of the day, I recounted the discussion and happenings: one free desk, a meeting with a new DEC partner, a meeting with a potential client, working on client projects and creating opportunities to give back to the small business community by hosting some training. All-in-all, it was an interesting day living the life of an entrepreneur out at the DEC. I could see the role the DEC plays in assisting small businesses succeed. Ray Bohac is the founder, president and CEO of CallCopy, Inc., one of the fastest-growing companies in the call recording and quality monitoring industry. AEP wins stimulus funding for GridSmart - $75 Million

The federal government has accepted American Electric Power Company Inc.’s bid for $75 million in stimulus funding, putting the company on track to begin rolling out its $150 million GridSmart initiative next month.
The Columbus-based utility’s AEP Ohio subsidiary on Tuesday afternoon will get word from the U.S. Department of Energy on the funding for GridSmart at a news conference scheduled at the company’s Dolan Technology Center in Groveport. AEP Ohio had applied this summer for stimulus funding aimed at companies that can demonstrate how so-called “smart grid” technology can boost the safety and reliability of energy nationwide through regional projects.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio in March cleared AEP to put $54.5 million toward the program and seek federal funding. AEP has said it will finance the remaining $20 million of the project not covered by its own spending or federal funds with the help of corporate partners that include Columbus-based research giant Battelle and General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE).
AEP’s GridSmart project is set to start in northeast Central Ohio next month with the installation of 110,000 “smart meters” at customers’ homes and businesses that allow greater control over use. GridSmart also plans to fund the testing of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and energy-efficient appliances with expectations for more than 500 new jobs created over three years as a result.
Beyond benefits for customers, the program also helps AEP keep in step with new state requirements. Through a comprehensive energy bill passed last year, AEP must cut its energy output by 0.3 percent this year and 0.5 percent in 2010. That cut increases incrementally over the next few decades to hit 22 percent in 2025.
“Not only will this project help us reduce the power that we need to generate, cut emissions and also delay the need to build generation, it will more importantly give customers the tools and information needed to use electricity more efficiently,” AEP Ohio President Joe Hamrock said in a release.
AEP (NYSE:AEP) delivers electricity to more than 5 million customers in 11 states, including about 1.5 million Ohio customers. The company last year earned $1.38 billion on $14.6 billion in revenue.

What is a talented material science and engineering graduate to do in Ohio? Just ask Ryan Wayne. Ohio Third Frontier’s support of fuel cell technology helped him land a position researching fuel cells with the Case Advanced Power Institute at Case Western Reserve University, where he was working towards his master’s degree.
Ryan’s experience working with fuel cells as a graduate student eventually landed him a job as a scientist with GrafTech, a 120 year-old company located in Parma, Ohio that has recently transformed its business to accommodate the advanced energy industry of the 21st century. Reservoir VC fund aids California company

A California information technology company is boosting its sales and development efforts following a recent round of funding led by Reservoir Venture Partners of Columbus.
Reservoir recently led a $5 million venture capital deal for San Jose-based PacketMotion Inc., a firm whose technology helps companies manage risks from insider fraud and protect data. As a result, the company said it has created a post for a worldwide sales and business development chief.
PacketMotion is one of a number of information technology firms in which Reservoir invests. Central Ohio companies it has backed include Dublin-based software firm Sypherlink, Westerville online publishing firm ECNext and Dublin medical device maker CleveX.

Netarx moving to Arena District

Technology firm Netarx LLC is packing up its Brewery District office and heading to the other end of downtown Columbus.
The company, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Mich., said its Columbus office will move next month to 3,000 square feet in the Arena District’s One Marconi Place building at 274 Marconi Blvd. Netarx helps businesses design, plan and manage their network communications.
Netarx, which has 200 employees and about 10 in Columbus, opened an office in the city in 2006, when the firm had roughly 50 workers. Since then, Netarx has quadrupled in size, the latest growth coming with an August deal to buy a business unit of Minneapolis-based Analysts International Corp. (NASDAQ:ANLY). Netarx now has several offices nationwide.
“Our new location brings us closer to clients like the Columbus Blue Jackets and Columbus Clippers, which was a huge added benefit,” Kirk Horn, district manager for Columbus, said in a release.

It has been quite a week for the sMoRTy71 media juggernaut. First, the interview I did with Lindsey Miller about Yammer for Ragan.com was published on Monday. Now, the interview I did with Noah Blundo for Columbus Monthly's December 2009 issue is out in print.

In Ohio, the name DiSabato is linked in schoolboy history with wrestling success. Owners of a record eleven state wrestling titles (fifteen when first cousins are included), the DiSabato brothers learned from an early age the lessons of one on one competition. Battelle to take part in national STEM push

Nonprofit research giant Battelle is taking part in a nationwide public-private initiative that looks to boost students’ performance in science- and math-focused disciplines.
President Barack Obama on Monday unveiled details of the Educate to Innovate campaign, a multiyear effort that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math – or STEM – learning in schools. Several corporate partners, including Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE:TWC) and Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC), have committed a combined $260 million in financial and in-kind support for programming over the next five years, while Columbus-based Battelle and the National Math and Science Institute are on deck as “core partners” to help an advisory board of businesses carry out the initiative.
Battelle spokeswoman Katy Delaney said the nature of the nonprofit’s role is being sketched out, but STEM learning has been a focus of the organization for years. Battelle worked with Ohio State University in 2006 to launch Columbus’ Metro High School, the state’s first STEM-based school, and oversees a 47-college, 81-school district STEM Learning Network in the state.
“As a global research and development leader, STEM is part of Battelle’s DNA,” Battelle CEO Jeffrey Wadsworth said in a statement. “Advancing STEM education for our next generation is not only a cause we deeply believe in, but it is also one of Battelle’s founding purposes.”
The financial backing of the corporations in the campaign is expected to fund hands-on learning and help recruit 100,000 volunteers for STEM-related programs. An annual science fair showcasing student winners in science, technology and robotics also is in the works.

With no employees and shattered sales, a home contractor retools to outlast the recession.

PaverStone's quality craftsmanship got the company off to a good start.

POWELL, Ohio (Fortune Small Business) -- Semper fidelis, the U.S. Marine Corps motto, means "always faithful" in Latin. As a young grunt serving at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Duane Draughon learned to remain loyal to the mission -- "whatever the cost," he says.
That mind-set has guided him since he left the Corps in 1997. "It's probably the only reason I've survived in business," says Draughon, who served as a police sergeant in the Marines and now owns a patio-paving company outside Columbus, Ohio. "I will never, ever give up."
He's been tested -- almost to the breaking point.
In 2005, after a stint selling cars, he started PaverStone Design Group. Launched during a national home-improvement boom, PaverStone was an instant success, designing and building lavish patios for affluent suburban homeowners in Columbus. To keep costs low, Draughon initially used prison inmates in a work-release program as laborers; later he hired and trained his own crews, mostly made up of immigrants from Mexico (all of them documented, he says).
Revenues topped $500,000 in 2006. Draughon had a new business, a new house and a new car, plus a new baby -- his third with his wife, Isabel.
Then came disaster.
Draughon's partner abruptly left the company in 2006, depriving PaverStone of a talented salesperson and a capable crew chief. Draughon admits that in trying to juggle a busy operation and manage the finances of his fast-growing business, he let costs spiral out of control. Soon he was broke -- and desperate. So the entrepreneur doubled down, betting everything he had on PaverStone.
Draughon began rebuilding the business one brick at a time. He worked out payment plans with creditors. In addition, he persuaded his wife to quit her $45,000-a-year job as a mortgage broker to take over PaverStone's marketing and bookkeeping so that he could spend more time closing deals and supervising his crews.
But in the summer of 2008, the Great Recession hit Columbus. To keep the business afloat, the Draughons pared expenses and laid off all five of their employees (the couple now hire subcontractors as needed). Orders trickled in during the summer and fall of 2009 -- enough to cover the utility bills and some other expenses -- but most projects have been much smaller than those the company handled before the economic downturn.
"Customers used to dip into home equity to build huge patios with fireplaces, kitchens and special lighting for $30,000 or $40,000," Draughon recalls, shaking his head in frustration. "Now all they want is a rectangle for $5,000."

Adapting to the downturn

Despite a rocky five years in business, the Draughons, both 33, are determined to make PaverStone work. Duane says the business taps all of his talents, which include selling, designing and supervising complex construction projects. Isabel takes great pride in the company's reputation as one of the top patio design firms in suburban Columbus. (PaverStone won a 2007 Consumers' Choice Award in a citywide contest.)
The Draughons foresee a rebound in the local home-improvement market -- perhaps in the spring of 2010 -- and they want to be prepared to grow the business rapidly when it comes.
But the Draughons know their company needs a stronger foundation. The couple seek a marketing strategy that maximizes their network of loyal customers and a more conservative financial plan to help them weather the vagaries of the real estate market. They also have questions about basic business practices. How can they find trustworthy lawyers and accountants? How should they negotiate better terms with suppliers?
To assist them in mapping out a plan, Fortune Small Business brought three Makeover experts to the company's spartan offices in an industrial park in Powell.
First up is Maureen Metcalf, 45, founder of management consultancy Metcalf & Associates in Columbus. Metcalf has found that thanks to aggressive search-engine optimization, PaverStone's slick Web site is usually one of the first to pop up in a Google search for "patio design in Columbus."
But it's almost too slick, Metcalf says. The site is loaded with stock photos, including an image found on countless Web sites of a young woman wearing a telephone headset who appears to be a national call-center representative.
The Draughons explain that they wanted to appear well established and businesslike. But they agree that they may have gone overboard with the corporate look.
"Many customers think we're part of a national franchise," says Isabel. "They don't understand that we're a family business. That really hurts. We've put our heart and soul into this company."
Metcalf's prescription: Use the site to share PaverStone's story. Tell potential customers about Duane's childhood just a few blocks away from the city's meanest streets, and how Duane's father put him and his two brothers to work mowing lawns to keep them out of trouble. Add that Duane turned an after-school job into a $120,000-a-year landscaping business before joining the Marines. Later he returned home, married and established a patio-building business.
"Finding reliable contractors is a nightmare for homeowners," Metcalf says. "You're a Marine veteran, a family man. You're trustworthy. You get the job done, on time. It's a compelling story."
Metcalf also advises the couple to update the Web site with photos of themselves. Get rid of the stock images. Add testimonials from satisfied customers who have been photographed lounging or dining on their patios. Create a section that offers before-and-after shots of backyards transformed by PaverStone.
"You're not just selling a paved patio," Metcalf says. "You're selling the idea of a beautiful place to relax with family and friends."

Untangling the books

FSB's next expert tackles the thorny topic of corporate finance. Michael Jokerst, 52, is a financial expert from CFO Leadership, a consultancy in Columbus.
The Draughons tell him they were unprepared to manage the finances of their fast-growing company. Marketing and labor costs soared. Duane suspects that he underestimated his costs as he raced from one job to another to oversee construction, damaging the company's bottom line. By the end of 2007, its busiest year to date, PaverStone owed $170,000 to suppliers. Bankruptcy loomed.
Although the Draughons have since worked out a repayment plan with the suppliers, they worry about their ability to withstand the boom-and-bust cycles of the real estate business.
"You've been using the 'big bucket' method of accounting," Jokerst says bluntly. "That's no way to run a business. You're pouring the money into a big bucket, taking out enough to cover your costs and hoping there's something left for you at the bottom of the bucket. That's dangerous."
Instead, the Draughons should determine their true cost of doing business, considering everything the company needs, from paper clips to paving stones. In the past, Duane calculated fixed costs of supplies for each job, then added a general fee for overhead -- 42% in boom times, but currently as little as 10% -- based on a formula that a consultant suggested last year.
"I suspect you aren't calculating the cost of your time," Jokerst says.
Duane nods in agreement. "Sometimes I'm up all night creating a design proposal for a homeowner -- because I want that job," Duane says. Jokerst explains that not all projects will be profitable, especially now, as competitors trim their margins.
"Calculate your costs to the penny," he tells the couple. "Or you could be working for nothing."
Jokerst offers more tips to boost the company's bottom line. Negotiate better terms with suppliers, he urges. PaverStone has been paying cash for construction materials since its financial troubles in 2007. "After two years, you've proved your creditworthiness to suppliers," Jokerst tells Duane. "You've earned the right to request better terms -- 30 days, at least."
Jokerst also recommends building a cash reserve during the busy spring and summer seasons to fund expenses during the slower winter months. Try to find a complementary business that would pull in needed revenue during the winter, he advises -- interior tiling, perhaps -- but be sure it's one that allows enough time to gear up for bidding on new projects in the spring.

Management trials

FSB's third expert, Nick Williams, 30, is a project manager with Definity Partners, a business consultancy in Columbus. Williams praises the Draughons' ability to survive a trial by fire during the past five years.
"One of the hardest things is having no guidance," Duane confesses. "Lots of times I don't know where to turn with business questions. Isabel and I have each other, but it gets lonely. We really need to find some mentors."
Duane says he's the one fielding calls from fledgling entrepreneurs within the African-American community in Columbus. Early on he sought help from a state-sponsored program for minority business owners, but "they treated me like a child," he recalls. "It was insulting."
Like most cities, Columbus offers dozens of networking groups for small business owners. "You've just got to make the rounds to find the right fit," Williams says. Local chambers of commerce provide opportunities to meet other business folk, though the quality of the programs varies widely from town to town. And Isabel should join groups that cater to women's business development and leadership. Don't judge an organization after just one event; try to attend several, and then meet with the group's leaders to discuss their mission and your goals.
Finding a mentor is a lot like dating, Williams says. "It could take a while to find that spark." But building a network of experienced advisers is essential. For example, mentors can provide valuable recommendations when you need a professional such as a lawyer or an accountant.
Immediately after the Makeover, the Draughons began to implement some of our experts' advice.
"The Makeover was a life-changing experience," Duane says. "We intend to come out of this downturn stronger than ever."
The Draughons are updating their Web site with bios and photos, including one of Duane as a Marine. Duane is assessing bids more carefully, trying to factor in the time he'll spend designing and overseeing each project. Every Friday, the couple review a financial report to monitor cash flow. This fall, they plan to attend several events sponsored by local business groups in the hope of building relationships with other entrepreneurs.

Library Journal has just released their list of the top library systems throughout the country, and the Columbus Metropolitan Library has ranked in second place for large systems with operating expenditures of over $30 million. The study analyzes circulation rates per capita, program attendance, public internet terminal use, and total number of visits.

Call recording vendor ranked among companies with highest levels of employee satisfaction by Business First

Business First's Best Places to Work Award is a voluntary nomination-based program. Employees of companies nominated for the award were asked to take part in an anonymous online survey though an independent firm. The survey was used to evaluate each company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics as well as employee satisfaction. To be eligible, companies had to have a minimum level of local, full-time employees complete the survey. All companies that met the minimum completed survey requirement had their individual scores tallied by a third-party research company. Each company was then ranked against the other companies in their size category. The top companies in each size category were honored as Business First’s Best Places to Work.
