While a US student fires the first bullet from a home-made 3D Printed polymer gun.

On the up-side, Australian scientists say they have found a way to grow human body parts using 3D printing technology. The technology isn’t the only cleverness here, 3D printers are now so portable that they might be installed in hospitals.

The University of Wollongong’s Centre for Electromaterials Science is opening a research unit at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital where 3D printing will be used to reproduce tissue material.

In the US, the State Department has successfully demanded the removal of the 3D printed gun’s schematics from Defcad, a file-sharing site run by Defense Distributed, the group at the centre of the 3D-printed gun controversy.

However, those worried about the ability to download 3D-printed gun blueprints, fret not: The Pirate Bay is apparently on the case, the 3D Printed guns schematics are available for download :: Read the full article »»»»

The movie depicts a character named Atom who befriends a single atom and goes on a journey that includes dancing, playing catch and bouncing on a trampoline. Set to a playful musical track, the movie represents a unique way to convey science outside the research community.

It takes around 1 million atoms to store a single bit of data on a computer, a bit being the basic unit of information in computing. Recently, IBM Research announced it can store that same bit of information in just 12 atoms. In order to make the movie atoms were moved with a scanning tunnelling microscope. The microscope weighs two tonnes, operates at minus 268 degrees Celsius and magnifies the atomic surface more than 100 million times :: Read the full article »»»»

On 30 April 1993 a statement was published that would change the lives of all future generations, in almost evey corner of the globe. An offer to make a new technology freely available, a technology that today runs everything from Electricity Grids to Facebook.

The worlds first web server, web page and all it’s code was given to the world in the hope that sharing might eccelerate our learning, www has accomplished that and a bunch more.

20 years later: 30 April 2013, and the world’s first web page is being dragged out of cyber-mothballs and upgraded for today’s internet browsers as part of a project to celebrate 20 years of the world wide web. The team behind the project – CERN – the European Organization for Nuclear Research is also considering creating an emulator that could run the original web browser ::::

When the internet was conceived in the early 1970s, the notion of openness was built into its architecture, it’s philosophy and technical protocols were free for all. The world wide web is surely last centuries greatest invention, a revolution in communication that few today could live without.

The first website was dedicated to the World Wide Web project itself, it was hosted on British physicist Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s simple NeXT computer. The first website described the basic features of the web – how to access other people’s documents, how to set up your own server – it’s inception was inspired to allow physicists to share information. Although the NeXT machine – the original web server – is still at CERN, sadly the world’s first website is no longer online at its original address.

British physicist Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web, also called W3 or just the web, in 1989 to help physicists to share information. At the time it was just one of several such information retrieval systems using the internet and although it looked pretty basic, the first website was loaded with features. Below, the original webpage from: info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/

It’s code was simple, elegant and utilitarian

The institutions that were created to cater to the evolution of the internet were open, bottom-up and inclusive. Anyone could and can participate in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The same may be said for the Internet Society, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF). Many stakeholders participate in these institutions to the general benefit of all users of the internet and providers of internet-based services.

When Tim Berners-Lee invented and released the World Wide Web design in late 1991, he found an open and receptive internet in operation onto which the WWW could be placed. The WWW design, like the design of the internet, was very open and encouraged a growing cadre of self-taught webmasters to develop content and applications.

The arrival of Marc Andreesen and Eric Bina’s work on the MOSAIC version of the browser struck a potent resonance with millions around the world. Netscape Communications emerged from this period of competition as a major force in internet evolution. Its Initial Public Offering triggered the Dot-Boom. Even when the Dot-Boom saged in 2000, there was enormous resonance and continued demand for access to basic internet service. Start-ups continue to be funded albeit at a somewhat less breakneck pace.

The new technology was launched with the world’s first website, which explained how the web worked. The site, hosted on Sir Tim’s NeXT computer, allowed early browsers to learn about the basic features of the new system and create their own web pages.

“It’s one of the biggest days in the history of the web,” CERN web manager Luke Noyes said of the historic day 20 years ago. “CERN’s gesture of giving away the web for free was what made it just explode.

“The site, which described the web as a “wide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative”, has long been dormant but CERN has now begun recreating the page. Mr Noyes says the project will allow future generations to understand the origin and importance of the web and its impact on modern life “We’re going to put these things back in place, so that a web developer or someone who’s interested 100 years from now can read the first documentation that came out from the world wide web team,” Mr Noyes said.

The CERN team has restored the files using a 1992 copy of the first website, but hopes to find earlier copies.

“We know there is a missing disk that has a 1990 copy of the first website somewhere,” Mr Noyes said, stressing that the restoration project is open and urging the public to get involved. “Someone out there might know where [the disk] is, and we would really like some help and collaboration in tracking these things down.”

Mr Noyes says the first browser was “actually very sophisticated, with images and features that don’t really exist anymore, like being able to edit web pages as well as read them”. “We would like to somehow enable people to try this,” he said. But he says it remains unclear how that will be accomplished. He says the CERN team is considering creating some kind of emulator, or possibly filming the process to show what it looked like. Mr Noyes says by making the birth of the web visible again, the CERN team aims to emphasise the idea of freedom and openness it was built on.

“In the early days, you could just go in and take the code and make it your own and improve it. That is something we have all benefitted from,” he said. He says while CERN is not promoting any specific ideology, “we want to preserve that idea of openness and freedom to collect and collaborate”. Mr Noyes says other information sharing systems that had wanted to charge royalties, like the University of Minnesota’s Gopher, “just sort of disappeared into history”.
