I took this video using my cellphone from the control booth (sorry about the quality) and it cannot do justice to how this looked live in the venue.

We used Pangolin to control all four lasers (as always) and had almost no sleep for 2 nights getting it all ready.

This was a huge event with a cast of technicians, producers and crew far too many too mention, but all went home exhausted but happy at a great show.

K-Pop met P-Pop at Araneta in a 2 hour extravaganza started with a spectacular laser show controlled by Rian Cahiga from Argon Animation. Watch the video and hear the crowd go wild!

The audience went nuts as you can hear as the 2 500mw lasers burst into action. We used “Live!” from Pangolin to control the laser which was triggered manually by Rian.

Girl Pop opened the concert with a couple of sexy tunes to be followed by Beast, to an absolutely thunderous applause as they came on stage. This is one of Korea’s hottest bands right now. If you don’t know “Shock” then where have you been hiding?

After Beast came a local Philippine band who have a huge following (they did well Maricris!) and were greatly appreciated by the audience.

Finally the main man appeared to an ear deafening cheer. Kim Hyun Joong is the hottest thing in Korea right now and loved and adored by many in The Philippines.

This was an incredible concert. Planned and put together by Underwood Inc with the support of GMA7 and Viva Entertainment and a cast of hundreds. As a last minute show, with only about 20 days to sell tickets and put the whole show together this was a great night.

A huge LED screen was the main backdrop with our two 500mw lasers fronting the stage.

This show was a pleasure to work on and we wish all concerned a great future and more shows to come.

We installed four lasers during the show and had to move 2 of them for different effects after the opening sequence for new effects.

The opening number had Kyla climbing a dancing pole with two male dancers bathed in a laser tunnel for stunning visual effect, while we projected laser animation onto a gauze screen in another area of the studio.

Here is the official GMA7 Party Pilipinas video that was shown yesterday on local television. The show was directed by Rico Guitierrez with Shakira on Lighting and Rian from Argon Animation on Lasers.

The 3 hour live extravaganza was special due to the use of 3D images projected not only at the studio, but also for the audience at home on TV.

The biggest show to hit Manila was broadcast on GMA7′s Party Pilipinas yesterday at midday.

Argon Animation with 4 units of 500mw laser, director Rico Gutierrez, Shakira Villa Symes (Lighting) and GMA7 teamed up for this huge event.

The event started with Jay Cayuca going wild on his violin and the four lasers blasting into the studio to the delight of the audience who simply went wild.

The four lasers all linked together, were controlled by a single Pangolin controller and produced a multitude of beams, tunnels, waves and other wild effects and enhanced by Shakira’s amazing lighting strategies.

Rian Cahiga (Director of WOW), Argon Animation’s very own laser diva was at the controls of the laser going out live on TV.

It seems the girls are taking over the lights!

Rico was a dream to work with as a director and open to ideas, help and suggestions and willing to try new and exciting effects (on screen hologram anyone?) even if everyone thinks he is crazy at first!

His passion simply spills out of him and his enthusiasm filled each one of us as he spoke his ideas.

The 3 hour live TV show was a massive epic with literally hundreds of people taking part both onstage and off stage. Beauty after beauty sang their hearts out on stage and I was simply overwhelmed with the emotion during the opening number.

I am so fortunate to be part of something so wonderful, so grand and so entertaining to millions. Yesterday during the show with so much talent pouring out I realized I have an incredible life and shearing it with people like Rian, Shakira and Rico is a blessing that so many more deserve to experience.

And so we look forward to the next big collaboration with GMA7 at Araneta on June 18th.

Yongha are a Chinese company that were recently bought out by Jollibee who wanted to introduce their new business partner to the Philippines and their own company and this culminated in a grand show at which Argon Animation provided the laser show with our now famous Argonette dancers in mirror costumes and we neetly tied this in with replacing the dancers with the management team of Yongha at the end much to the delight of the audience!

The SEA Games 2009 were held in Vientiane, Laos for the very first time and Argon Animation was contracted to provide programming services for both the opening and closing ceremony.

We came together as a huge team of directors, technicians, crew and performers to put together a breath-taking historical and cultural journey enjoyed by over 20,000 people in the audience who showed their love and passion for their own country cheering and clapping all through the show.

We had two 9 watt white light lasers for the graphics and two 5 watt and 1 10 watt green lasers for the beam effects. We opened with an edited version of “Revolution” from the Matrix to a tremendous roar from the crowd and then began the main part of the show with graphics and beam effects throughout.

We are having a few days rest as we have worked almost non-stop for about 10 days watching the sun come up far too many times and then we be starting to program the closing ceremony which will be next week and of course I will let you know about the show here.

The whole show here was based around the Lao culture and history and was a great display of lights and colors to match each different scene and mood.

Due to the size of the stadium, it was not possible for us to connect all of the lasers using our standard cable systems, so we used a wifi system to connect our master and slave computers together. One computer on each side of the stadium containing the 5 control cards, one for each laser.

We received a master timecode from the control desk which locked our laser program into the music so we were able to sit and watch the show while the computer ran all of the laser by itself with us just monitoring the system.

The show was watched by an unprecedented 4 prime ministers from around the world.

This was truly a wonderful experience for me and also truly an honor for me to be asked to be part of this show. What a great way to finish the year and a brilliant example of lights and lasers for the SEA Games 2009 opening ceremony.

The 2009 SEA Games will have 5 lasers in total. 1 unit of 10 watt, 2 units of 5 watt and 2 units on 9 watt RGB lasers all controlled by a wifi system and 5 Pangolin programming cards.

The lasers are provided by Oracle lasers and the programming is being done by Tim Bennett from Argon Animation and even though it is 1.30 in the morning it is still great to be here.

The installation of lasers is almost finish and programming of the 45 minute show begins in earnest tomorrow morning.

The 2009 SEA Games will be attended by hundreds of VIP guests as well as about 25,000 in the audience and this is the 2nd large show programmed by Argon animation in the last two months, the last on being the opening ceremony of the Asian Indoor games in Hanoi.

2009 SEA Games and Argon Animation are at it again.

Leaving For 2009 SEA Games

After traveling through Bangkok and a 1 hour delay I finally arrived in Vientiane in Laos and got to the Sabaidee Hotel and very nice too. Except no kettle!

So today I go to site and will take a look at what is in store for me over the next 20 days as I get ready for the 2009 Sea Games here. It’s exciting!

Yesterday was an interesting day for me. I watched a movie on the plane which said “what’s the point of doing anything if you don’t enjoy it?” so as I sat there waiting for the late plane, instead of getting angry I decided just to enjoy it and finished reading my book (Blink by Malcolm Gladwell – It’s great – Read it!)

Yesterday I arrived in a country I have never been to before. It’s cool to do something new and during the day I noticed how many people I came in touch with.

Most of them I just looked at and spoke to only a few. A nod here a “hello” there and off we go never to see each other again.

Sometimes our lives meet just for a moment and then on with our own lives again. Sometimes, we swap numbers or cards, but for the most part we never know each other. It’s very strange.

Today’s blog is not about lasers, it’s just about the journey to the lasers. I had a great first day, just enjoying the travel and the new people and the new experiences.

Laos looks really nice. Streets are clean, the people seem friendly and nice and it’s not too hot here. Less humidity.

I am looking forward to work tonight and getting ready for the opening ceremony for the 2009 Sea Games.

Philippine Call Centers (about 60 of them all together) each year come together for a noisy but wonderful event of bands, music and art and there are normally about 3 to 4 thousand in the audience. This year is no exception.

Setting up the stage and lasers

The night packed with over 16 bands, countless models and performers starts at 5pm and goes on until the early hours of the next day. Philippine call centers certainly know how to party!

500 MW Laser and why I use them

Why is it that most lasers have a green laser beam?

Well firstly the human eye can only see colors in the 380 to 750nm wavelengths under normal conditions and the eye is particularly sensitive to wavelengths around 555nm, which is green.

Therefore green laser beam is much cheaper to use (and to make) than red or blue for similar looking power which is great news for you as the end user and it also explains why a color laser is so much more expensive than a green laser.

When Argon Animation Inc first opened for business in 2001, we had a 9W coherent full color laser which was really incredibly beautiful, but we had 500 kilos of equipment, a water cooling system which wasted gallons of water and needed 3 phase power from a generator to get it running.

Then we bought the first 500mw laser in the Philippines and although it used a green laser beam it only weight 20 kilos, it is air-cooled (so no more water needed) and it used plug in the wall power 220 volts single phase – no more generator) which was brilliant for us and also for you as it meant no water bills, no generator or diesel costs and our set up time was reduced from 20 hours to 3 or 4 hours.

The 500mw laser was small enough to be mobile, but at 500mw was powerful enough to be seen and at the 523 wavelength was very bright for the eye.

We can even use it outside at night!

Well reduced times in set up so no more large bills with venues, no generators for the laser, no water cooling, compact equipment designed for laser show use which means smaller areas back stage. It is safer because no more water hoses running around and possible leaks and best of all the laser is highly visible to your audience.

Laser Artist wanted for immediate training by Argon Animation Inc for our shows both locally (in The Philippines) and also with possible international work.

Laser Artist Job Description.

The laser artist will report directly to the directors of Argon Animation Inc, but they will be expected to run the laser animation department after training.

The laser artist will be responsible for the installation and programming of the laser shows exclusively for Argon Animation .

Full training will be given on the following:

Laser fundamentals
Laser equipment – lasers, scanners, power etc
Laser programming and design
Laser installation and show set-up
Laser safety and trouble-shooting
Show ingress, show operation, show egress

The Laser Artist Applicant should hold the following:

Clean driving license
College grad of an animation program or similar
Experienced in cell frame animation (hand drawn or computer drawn)
Experienced in Cinema 4D, Flash and 3D Studio Max (Not Maya)
Passion for theatre, music, the entertainment world, etc
Be easy to teach and have a desire for learning
Qualities as a leader
Be able to work unsupervised sometimes throughout the night

The successful laser artist candidate will be expected to be a hands-on-worker not only driving to the shows in the company van but also installing the equipment to Argon Animation’s specifications, be able to work easily with clients, producers and the show world people.

You need to be able to work long hours, sometimes weekends and holidays as we produce the shows that the audiences are watching. This is a tough and demanding work, but equally great fun and rewarding, so no sissy “it’s not my job” types. We do not work 9 to 5 we work when there are shows.

The successful candidate will be punctual (as in never late), able to work under pressure, creative, honest and ideally be familiar with the show biz world. If you have been show crew before that is great. We want to talk to you.

You must live in Metro Manila or surrounding areas. Preferred age between 25 and 30 and you should be physically fit and strong enough to lift lighting equipment and boxes. Dress and grooming should be tidy.

3rd Asian indoor Games and Argon Animation

The 3rd Asian Indoor Games was put together by a huge team of technicians from Singapore, Vietnam and of course Tim from The Philippines and together we successfully performed the opening ceremony on 30th October 2009.

The laser installation consisted of one 8 watt full color laser, two 10 watt green lasers and 2 five watt green lasers all controlled by a wifi link using 5 pangolin controllers and 2 remote computer stations.

This was a massive show with over 5000 performers, dancers and entertainers and performed in front of some of Vietnam’s greatest dignitaries including the President of Vietnam.

The show lasted a massive 55 minutes and contained three distinctive themes namely: The Festival of youth; cultural identity and integration and development. 5000 dancers in colorful costumes, with a huge background of lasers and lights, this show took us 10 days to program working mostly at night. We saw the sun come up virtually every day!

3rd Asian Indoor Games Opening Ceremony

This was a very important show for Hanoi as it is really a prelude to the 1000 year Hanoi anniversary celebrations taking place next year. Hanoi officials wanted to be sure that they really can pull off a huge event like this and the can pat themselves on their back as this event for the 3rd Asian Indoor Games went off like clockwork.

The audience yelled and cheered continually throughout the event which marks the beginning of a 10 day sporting event from athletes from all over Asia including a large delegation from the Philippines.

The event started spectacularly with the lighting of the olympic touch using pyrotechnics and fire much to the delight of the audience.

The lasers added to the excitement throughout the show blasting into the air and covering the stadium with beams and effects all choreographed to the 59 minute audio track using a SMPTE time code.

There we 14 different pieces of music throughout the show and each one had to programmed by the split second both with lasers and with lighting.

This was a huge collaboration of talents and skills from around Asia and Tim was very proud to represent Argon Animation at this amazing event, which is the 1st of 2 events, the next one being the opening and closing ceremonies of the South East Asian Games being held in Laos in December of this year and we can’t wait.

Laser hire in the Philippines is a very simple process and Argon Animation Inc is the only group you need to call for professional level laser equipment.

Laser hire has been handled in a safe and professional manner since 2001 by Argon Animation who is the only registered company in The Philippines dedicated to laser hire services and we have handled well over 50 shows a year for most of the major corporations in the country.

Lasers just like everything else can be dangerous if not used correctly and the last thing you want as a company is the headache of worrying about your laser set up safety so we recommend that for complete piece of mind you only work with professional level companies.

Laser hire should not be trusted to light and sound companies that buy their lasers from China and that do not comply with American safety requirements and use lighting technicians and crew who have no training in laser technology, laser safety and laser set-up. It is just completely dangerous.

Professional lasers are expensive. To keep the high quality beams high quality diodes and laser projectors are needed and these do not come cheap. High speed scanners are needed to produce the good quality graphics and training of laser artists is a slow process and this is why Argon Animation is more expansive than the lighting show companies that offer lasers in the Philippines.

What does it say about quality when they are giving their lasers for 100$ per night?

Laser technicians need to be trained in the art of the laser and laser safety and in programming do’s and don’t so that you as the end user may have the best show possible and the best value for money and achieve your desired results.

We at Argon Animation Inc always request a meeting with the directors, clients and head of lighting so that we can co-ordinate laser position, laser programming and other laser effects well in advance of the show so that no last minute surprises occur.

Lasers are a special effects and therefore should not normally be used all of the time. Just like everything else the audience will get bored if they are used all the time and we recommend a few short sharp dramatic uses of the lasers rather than long term use.

Audience scanning can be irritating (and dangerous if not done correctly) to the eyes and we normally set up our lasers so that the scans are above head height unless the effect is specially designed for audience scanning.

Mirrors and mirror balls should be carefully placed and locked in position so that no 1st generation single beams can possible go into the audience even by accident.

Lasers are now generally driven by low current power, but care still needs to be taken and the electrical supply needs to be a no go zone for the public.

Lasers should never be placed so low that anyone can look directly into the laser. It can damage the eyes at close distance in the blink of an eye.

Care needs to be taken when setting up lasers and we at Argon Animation have been trained in England to produce sale laser shows for the entertainment of the audience and the best results for our business partners.

Expo Sevilla was a turning point in my life. In March 0f 1992 I moved to Sevilla in Spain to help produce and run the nightly show at the Expo 92 lake area.

Expo Sevilla was an amazing time not just for me but for everyone there – guest or worker and for me it was without doubt one of the best times of my life and I will never ever forget it.

It started for me during a chance meeting in London in October 1991. I had a meeting with Laser Creations who told me that they had a show in Spain and they were struggling to find crew to go for a full year.

I of course volunteered and found myself working super hard to learn as much as I could about laser and show production over the next 6 months and then during March 1992 I was in a truck heading for the Expo Sevilla site.

What I saw at Expo Sevilla scared the hell out of me, but many moons later and a lot of blood sweat and tears, the massive team and I pulled off one of the best shows I have ever seen.

The Expo Sevilla show was a massive epic of an really international team from America, France, Spain and England and I am sure some others and hundreds of hours of love and work.

When the 1st show opened there were about 250,000 in the audience and I think about 80million on satellite TV. It was one of the proudest moments of my career to be working on this amazing Expo Sevilla project.

We had three units of 35 watt I400 coherent Argon gas lasers and three units of Krypton 15 watt Coherent lasers, which for a while we swapped out with Dye lasers for a while.

There were six 45 meter waterscreens and each of the laser systems projected onto two waterscreens using a double head scanning system and the whole laser scanning systems were being run by three Acorn A5000 computers with the “Ultimate” laser controller.

The Expo Sevilla lake show film projection was made by six 70mm film projectors which also sent the signal to all of the equipment so that everything could sync into it. The film contained a metal strip which triggered the time code generator.

There were also 12 units of Hardware slide projectors with scrolling slides and at least 6 units of color changing skytrackers by Syncrolite. I think these were the first color changing skytrackers in the world and were launched at the Expo Sevilla.

Over 30 Million people came to see the Expo Sevilla show live which was an amazing figure in itself and more than 100 countries participated in the event.

For me the Expo Sevilla was a baptism of fire into the laser industry. I absolutely loved it, even thought there were nights of tears and frustration and I have no idea how many sunrises I saw programming and tweaking, but it was substantial.

I have never worked on a project as big as this again and it will always be a show that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life. I met so many great people there and the Expo Sevilla show was a show that completely changed my life.

I was so privileged to be part of such and incredible show and I will look forward to another time when I can perform more shows that come close to the show at Expo Sevilla.

3d laser show is a wonderful thing when projected correctly, but there are two different types of 3d commonly used with laser show projectors.

3d laser show projectors are actually standard projectors and the 3d projection is actually handled by the software and not the hardware as sometimes thought.

Example Of A 3D Laser Show

Extruded 3d laser show: This style of animation is actually a 2d projection. The normal 2d projectors project a 3d image on to a flat surface giving it the appearance of a 3d laser show, when in actual fact it is not really 3d. This is the easiest 3d to project. The 3d is actually produced in the drawing of the animation and in the programming of the images. This is a fairly standard style of animation.

Stereoscopic 3d laser show: This kind of 3d laser show projection is very different in the fact that the audience to the show must wear special 3d laser show glasses. Each eye actually sees a slightly different view of the image and these are the four most common stereoscopic 3d laser show projection systems:

Anaglyph or color is the first system that is commonly used. The glasses use a red glass for the left eye and a blue or green glass for the right eye;

Polarized 3d laser uses a polarizing system. The left eye looks through a vertical polarizing glass and the right eye looks through a horizontal polarizing glass.

Alternating field glasses. This type of technology uses a shuttering system. When a left eye image is being projected the right eye shutter closes and when a right eye image is being projected the left eye shutter closes. This all happens at really high speed so the viewer doesn’t even notice it is happening.

Chromatic displacement or ChromaDepth® uses a system that separates the color fields making red images look close to the audience and blue images the furthest away with yellow and green images in-between. This is the type of 3d laser show that Argon Animation has used over the years.

This kind of 3d laser show must be projected onto a screen of some kind and cannot be projected into the air. We are often asked to project images similar to the “Batman Logo” onto the clouds or into the air, or effects such as “Princess Leah” appearing in mind air as was seen in Star Wars. Please note that these effects are not actually possible (under normal conditions) and were achieved through video layering. These effects cannot be performed in typical laser shows.

Laser lighting display or laser light show is a spectacular event to see. There is no other form of light quite like a laser beam.

Laser lighting displays play with the beam in a way that no other form of lighting can match. With laser you can write, draw, animate as well as all the traditional beams, tunnels and other great effects seen with a laser. You can even produce 3D stereoscopic laser and when you can combine all different types of laser effects together, then you have a laser light display that cannot be accomplished by any other form of light.

The best laser light display is done indoors (although we regularly perform outdoors as well) with all the lights turned off and there is complete blackout. Sometimes we use additional traditional lighting to support the laser to make it even more dramatic, but the laser can be a stand alone show.

Laser light can now be any color although green is most often used as it is most visible to the eye and also the cheapest to produce.

Smoke or haze is used in the air to enhance the laser beams making them look much brighter than they really are and adding to the incredible illusion of movement that laser produces.

Beams, flats, tunnels and waves are some of the best effects in a laser light display and the audience love to immerse themselves in the effects.

Laser Animation

Laser light displays should only be operated by a professionally trained laser operator who understands the use of laser, laser safety and also potential laser hazards. A single laser should never be pointed directly into a persons eye as any intense beam of light including laser may be considered a danger.

Laser light displays really became popular in the 1970′s and are surprisingly still popular until these days due to their hypnotic appeal. Large groups such as Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult, The Who, ELO and many others introduced lasers to the world as shows became more and more spectacular.

A good laser light display still draws a crowd and when programmed correctly will make any production look incredible. Many laser shows do not look good simply because the directors do not understand how they work and the conditions that are needed for best effect. It is important that pre-production meetings between the laser operator, the lighting technician and the director takes place and the conditions for best laser projection are met so that the best show can be produced for your clients.

Laser is a special effect and does not need to be used all of the time throughout the even, but rather at special moments and with great choreography and timing. This is what makes a wonderful laser light display.

What does laser stand for is a question that we get asked about a lot.

Some people write the word ‘laser’ as ‘lazer’ but when you know that the word ‘laser’ is actually an acronym (a word formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term) and that it actually stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation you will understand that the companies that use the word ‘lazer’ on their equipment don’t know much about their own subject and it is amazing to see how many “professionals” use the wrong word! Hmmmm…..

The answer to the question ‘what does laser stand for’ often makes people scared when they hear the word ‘radiation’ but radiation actually just means the process of emitting radiant energy in the form of waves or particles, so not really a dangerous process, just a misunderstood term.

What makes a laser unique is that it ‘radiates’ or ‘emits’ light in a single beam (or coherent) of light. A light bulb for example emits light in every direction in a manner known as scattered light. If you could collect all of the light going in every direction and bring it down to a single beam you would have something that looks like a laser beam.
