Have you ever found a fabric that seemed to appear just when you were thinking about something specific? It's amazing how that happens isn't it??

Recently, I needed to design a project for my students who had recently 'graduated' from my Sewing for Beginners class. It needed to have some new sewing techniques to learn but not too difficult for sewing almost newbies.

Since we are all passionate about our sewing machines (!) I thought a sewing machine cover would be perfect for that next class. And wouldn't you know it - at my next 'must have' (lol!!) excursion to my local fabric store the first fabric I saw was perfect. Serendipity or what?!?!?!

Perfect right???

The new techniques introduced in this class are .........

gathering and decorative stitching

using interfacing (in both the cover itself and in the large rear pocket) and adding a decorative braid and buttons.

Since the class is only a 3 hour class it couldn't have too much in it - just enough to learn some new techniques and to be able to finish it off at home.

A Buninyong Scarf for a Buninyong Gal

I recently finished knitting a new scarf. I love knitted lace and this scarf seemed just right for me. It is the Buninyong Scarf pattern by Aussie designer Georgie Hallam of Tikkiknits. Beautiful isn't it?

Why a 'Buninyong Scarf for a Buninyong Gal'? You see Buninyong is a place in country Victoria in Australia - and it just so happens I live there!! So with the name and lace, how could I pass it up?!?!? And as the final enticement - Gerogie's Husband proposed to her on Mt Buninyong. Did I mention I am a big romantic??? So, you see, it was a done deal as soon as I learned the story behind the design.

The lace pattern is simple enough to memorise - just twelve rows - and the scarf is only two repeats wide. A quick knit. It is a great design if you want to finish a project in a hurry. If you are a beginner wanting to try lace knitting for the first time this pattern is perfect.

The yarn I used is by Aussie Yarn producer and designer Jo Sharp. It is Silkroad Aran - an aran/worsted weight (10ply) yarn in 85% wool/10% silk/5% cashmere. Mmmmmm ...... sooooo soft!! The colour I chose is Casket (134) - a rusty colour just right for a red head!

New Sewists Off and Running

I have recently had the honour and privilege of introducing some wonderful Gals into the fabulous world of sewing. I have been running my Sewing for Beginners class at my local shop- Sew Special - over the last couple of months. After six weeks of learning - we have covered from how to thread your machine, moved through terminology, tools, pattern reading, cutting and ending up sewing an apron.

My Gals have graciously allowed me to share their creations!

Most had never used their machines before - look how far they have come.

In our talks on fabrics - grains, biases, different types of fibres, patterns, etc - we discussed the relative ease of using different types of patterns - you know when we want stripes to all line up or patterns we want to continuing running throughout the design!!!

Some of my brave souls turned up with stripes and continous patterns regardless! Look at this fabulous fussy cutting for the pockets - really well done don't you think???

I am so proud of my Gals - I feel like a Mother Duck whose precious Ducklings have given their tail feathers a little shake and braved the whole new world they were so eager to explore!! Ha - I know I am sooo corny - but very heartfelt!

Thanks for the fun and the laughs and the warm fuzzies, Gals. I look forward to sharing many more sewing journeys with you. Welcome to our wonderful world.

My Blanket With Arms

It is almost winter in Australia - my favourite season. I looove the cold. I live in Ballarat - which is about 300 metres (1,000 feet) above sea level, inland and in the south of Australia - so we get cold (well for Australia anyway!!).

I decided I needed a new coat to wear. With my new teaching schedule taking me out of the warm, snug house at night and the teaching venue only a few minutes from home, I am not in the car long enough for the heater to heat! So a warm snuggly coat is needed.

A quick flick through the pattern books and this Simplicity pattern (number 2208) jumped out at me. View A is my 'blanket with arms'!

All the designs in this Simplicity pattern are meant to be made with polar fleece (I think in the US this is simply referred to as fleece???). I choose artic polar fleece because it is the thickest and warmest. Polar fleece is fabulous to wear - it is soft, light weight, comfortable and warm. And to sew with it is terrific. It doesn't fray - so no seam finishes to worry about. It is not too stretchy - in fact, I used a straight stitch when sewing it, I just lengthened it a little to avoid too much drag. And it can be combined with normal weight cotton or woven fabrics - like in the edging on my coat. It feels so lovely against your skin. Pretty good all round really! In fact, I used it as backing (no batting needed) on quilts for three of my boys and in the winter they all put these quilts, fleece side to skin, underneath their doonas because it feels so good and is so warm and toasty!

I had some wonderful Denyse Schmidt fabric put aside for a dress but I had to cut into it because it was just perfect for the self faced edging for the coat. Sigh - what can you do - the teal colour was almost a perfect match. Guess my dress will now be a skirt!

This pattern was very easy and quick to put together - in fact, it was my Mother's Day afternoon sewing! And since there is no shape to it there are no fitting issues to worry about. Magic! Simply sew and wear.

I wore it last night when I taught my sewing class and it was so lovely and warm - a little stylish too I think! When I came out of the shop at 10.30pm it was about 2 deg Celsius (35 Fahrenheit) but I was a warm little gal - I just snuggled into my blanket with arms!!

Fairy God-Sister and Old Saint Nick in Cahoots!

Catchy title?!?!?! I think so. Yesterday Jolly Saint Nick (who usually goes by the name Nick - husband of Sonya - aka, Fairy God-Sister) came knocking on my door with a big, red sack - well really it was a big, red bag but 'sack' fits the story metaphor soooo much better! Always one to love a surprise gift I eagerly dug in and found beautiful goodies from my wonderful Fairy God-Sister (you may remember her from this and this previous post).

First out of the bag was a fantastic retro cannister set, circa 1970.

They are fabulous - bright, colourful and flowers (one of lifes' greatest bounties!). I know that cannisters usually belong on the kitchen bench but since I am a creative soul (!) I have decided they look much better in the sewing room. They are now home to all my bits and bobs.

A happy little vignette that makes me smile when I reach for my oft used tools.

Next out of the bag was a lovely wrap.

So my colour - caramel and white. It is sooo soft and light. It will become my sewing room 'blankie' to warm me on the cold winter days and nights I am at the sewing machine.

It so reminds me of one on my favourite bad habits - jersey caramels (a lollie/candy) that is also too often supplied to me by my naughty Fairy God-Sister. Maybe if I feel wrapped in a jersey caramel I won't want to eat as many?? Mmmm ..... fantasy can be sooo comforting. Lol!

And the last beauty to be pulled from the bid, red bag .....

A wonderful, vintage quilt top!! I wish I could do this Lovely justice with a full quilt photo but it is tooo huge - 98" x 102" (245cm x 255cm). It is stunning! A lovely grandmother's flower garden design lovingly and very patiently english paper pieced. Wow - such dedication!

The colours are fabulous - reds, blues, greens, pinks, yellows, apricots and mauves. I wish I was good at dating such things - I swing between 1930's and 1950's. Maybe too much brown for the '30's??

I am so totally spoiled - it is not my birthday or any other special occasion. It is the best of occasions though - one good Friend lovingly thinking of another. Thank you so very much my Fairy God-Sister - you continue to reside very firmly in my heart. And let's not forget Jolly Saint Nick who played delivery man - thanks to you too!

A Retro Apron

When I first saw this fabulous Melody Miller fabric I fell in love! The colour, the designs, the style - all screamed of my childhood. The range is called Ruby Star Sparkle and my particular love fest is More Happy Dishes.

When I started thinking about the project for the 6 week, Sewing for Beginners, class I am teaching at my local sewing shop, Sew Special, I wanted something that would be simple enough for beginners but interesting enough for a bunch of enthusiastic grown up gals. An apron seemed just the thing. Pretty but practical as well. And I had the perfect fabric for an apron - seemed like serendipity (don't you just love that word!!!).

The pattern we are working on is a Simplicity apron pattern (#2555).

We are making the second version (version B) - a few design details but not too many for beginners - some of whom have never threaded a machine before! This week we are up to practice sewing some samples - you know things like a straight seam, a curve, topstitching, understitching and sewing on a ribbon detail.

I am really pleased with how well my class sample has turned out. The fabric is perfect. One day, when I am no longer teaching this class (or when I make another sample!) I will be able to take it home. Although, I may be afraid to use it - it might get dirty!!

I am quite chuffed with the way I cut the pockets out and how well the pattern lined up - it is important to get these things right when you are the teacher because, you know, you are supposed to know what you are doing!

It is a little hard to tell from the photo but the design for the strap is very clever. The armhole facing on each side is actually sewn down to construct a casing through which the strap is threaded. Therefore, it becomes totally adjustable for any size bosom!

The ribbon detailing gives it a little design lift and takes away the 'plainness' of the design I think.

My students are doing very well and are fun to teach. If they are happy for me to share I will have an 'apron gallery' post later on when the class is over and we move on to the next learning experience!

Anzac Day - Recollections of a Personal Journey

Once upon a time there was a Boy and a Girl. Both had a yearning for an adventure, a lust to see and experience the World outside what was familiar to them. Both said goodbye to those they loved and turned their face towards the unknown. The Boy shouldered his military duffel and, together with his Mates, walked the gang plank onto the mighty ship. The Girl hefted her suitcase onto the luggage check-in conveyor belt and, alone, walked the gang plank into the belly of the jumbo jet. Both looked forward with a sense of anticipation. However, from there their stories diverge dramatically. Ironically, they both end up in the same place and neither of them will ever be the same again

April 25th 1915 - a day of huge significance for both the Boy and the Girl. Gallipoli, Turkey - place of dramatic events for both the Boy and the Girl. The Boy suffered carnage and bloodshed, death and destruction. The Girl stared in horror at the trenches that were his home for so many miserable weeks and knew that no matter the ugliness of the scenes that played like a bad film in her mind, that they could never be as ugly as His reality had been. He is surrounded by his courageous and dying Mates. She by those who had become her travel buddies, all young 20 somethings, collectively weeping over the graves of those who, in His time, could have been Her mates, Her brothers, Her Family. Young men too young to die. She is moved beyond what mere words can convey. Although in Her travels She has seen other battlefields, the sense that this Boy and his bretheren belonged to Her nation touched Her with a depth that was profoundly personal.

Their journeys are over and they both return home. Neither can comprehend what they have experienced. The Boy will be haunted by his aches and his memories. The Girl will be strengthened by her deepened respect for the Boy - for his courage, for his honour and for his sacrifices. And every year on Anzac Day She will thank Him and his Mates for the freedom they, and all the Boys (and Girls) who fought in later wars, secured for Her so that She had the choice to journey to that place to honour Him for what He had sacrificed for Her and (now) Hers.

This year I find that I am moved even more by Anzac Day. Maybe it is because I talked with three of my Sons about my Grandfather who had fought in World War II and my Uncle who was conscripted to fight in Vietnam. Maybe I am just appreciating the Familial wealth of my life. Maybe some moments of our personal history leave an overwhelmingly indelible mark. Or maybe in our current social climate I feel the need to reaffirm my knowledge that there are truly those who have, and continue, to give meaning to the 'hero' in superhero.

Yesterday as the Girl sat in the car, waiting to collect Her precious Sons from school, listening to the radio playing "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" (by Eric Bogle), the Girl wept for joy to know they would be walking through the gate to Her even while She wept in sadness for those Boys who gave their lives and the Mothers' who continue to wait for the Sons who will never come home.

Except in our memories - Lest We Forget.

It' a Wrap!

A crocheted wrap that is!!

A little while ago it was my Mother-in-law's (Danielle) birthday. I always try to make something for my loved ones for their special occasions. I believe there is nothing quite so special and meaningful than a hand made gift made especially for you. She is getting on in years now and feels the cold quite a lot so a lovely, thick, long wrap seemed just the thing for cuddling into - particularly as it is coming into winter in Australia.

Crochet is my current 'in passion' craft. I seem to gravitate to it whenever I have a spare moment and so my mind went straight to it as a vehicle for Danielle's gift. I love a lacy look so the stitch I chose is Rack Stitch (as described by The Harmony Guides - Basic Crochet Stitches). It is a 3 row repeat pattern that is easy to remember and produces a lovely look. Just my kind of pattern!!

Even better I was able to use yarn already in my stash. Made me feel doubly virtuous!! I am trying to remind myself that I have a stash because I loved those yarns enough to have bought them to use in future projects, so whenever the urge strikes to buy more yarn for a new project I force myself to head to the stash first. This time it paid off! Mauve is her colour - I seem to have been using it for her for years!

The mauve yarn is Moda Vera Mousse 70%/30% wool/soya and the two different yellows are Moda Vera Chantilly 70%/30% acrylic/milk.

I did a little modelling so you could see how it looked. I confess I was a little reluctant to take it off and hand it over - I am a 'purple' gal too you see! Sigh ...... but hand it over I did and had a little tear in my eye when I saw the smile on her face!

Covert Robin - Yay, Gifts!

It is time to share with you the bounty from this round of the Covert Robin swap that I have co-hosted and participated in. I have been holding the excitement in until I was sure my swap partner (and fellow co-host), Clara from Clover and Voilet, who lives a looooong way away, had received her pressie - wouldn't want to spoil the surprise!

To say that I am thrilled with the gift I received from the most gracious Jane, of Buzzmills fame, is an understatement. You know how you sometimes read those gushy "it's soooo wonderful" posts and think perhaps it is a little over the top (or maybe, embarrassingly that's only me!)??? Don't think so now because I am truly, truly in love with my gift!

Can you see why? Jane made me this lovely padfolio. It is from the Perfect Padfolio pattern designed by our Covert head honcho, Rachael from imagine gnats. It is the kind of item that is so useful for me and yet I wouldn't make the time to make it for myself. Jane pegged me just right!

The inside has places for my business cards, a pen and pockets for holding paperwork - perfect for keeping safe and central all those little pieces of paper you have scribbled down a designed on when inspiration struck and you didn't have your design book with you! I know I am not the only one guilty of this!! Jane even included a notebook for me with a quilty chevron cover. Perfect.

The fabric used has a lovely emotional element for me too - the main exterior linen fabric has been handprinted by Jane and paired with one of my all time favourite fabric lines - Flea Market Fancy by Denise Schmidt. And who could not love the little covert robin gracing the front cover to forever remind me of my association with this swap. So very thoughtful. All this and a beautiful (I am guessing) handmade card with a lovely personal message inside. Jane, you have my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for your thoughtfulness, skill and consideration.

Now what did I make for my partner, Clara?

At first I wasn't sure what to make. Sneaking and skulking around her blog told me quite clearly that she mostly dealt in fabric. But somehow and for reasons that defy any kind of logic (!) I felt a resistance to making something from fabric. Maybe I thought that that was something Clara was likely to do for herself. So ........ the next move - Pinterest! The next most fertile ground for a stalker is someone's Pinterest boards where I found the quote from Clara that set me on my path "That's it, I need to crochet!".

So these crocheted coasters were borne!

I stayed with the yarn theme and thought that someone who is clearly stylish and fashionable needed a little something glamorous for all those glam things that us girls need to do. So .....

I recently purchased some sequined yarn skeins with no idea what I would do with them - they just sparkled and called to me! Serendipity or foreseeing?!?!?! whatever - just perfect for this project though.

I have lined the bag and crocheted a flower for a little outside decoration and added a blingy button for its centre. Bling plus!! I hope you are able to give yourself a night on the town Clara!

Alpacas and Fairy God-Sisters

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Rural Lifestyle Expo in Ballarat. Being raised a city slicker and now living as a country gal, I love attending these kinds of events. While I don't have much use for all the farm equipment on show I do so love all the animal exhibits, the yummy food and the general atmosphere. An added pleasure was seeing my good buddy, Rachel, who was working on one of the stalls - a Tupperware stand. I sooo love my tupperware!

My main 'excitement' in going though was to see the alpacas. To say I am a confirmed alpaca yarn enthusiast is a defininte understatement! I love everything about alpaca yarn - it is sooooo soft, has a lovely halo that doesn't get up your nose, drapes beautifully, is light to wear and is warmer than wool. What's not to love ????

These lovely beauties were shy and bashful, yet calm amongst the crowds, and didn't mind a little petting and stroking.

Isn't he beautiful - such a lovely expressive face with huge, soulful eyes. Ok, a little fanciful I admit, but alpacas touch my inner poet!!

This wee baby (cria) girl was gracious enough to permit me to stroke and pat her. She was so soft and, unlike sheep, her fleece has no lanolin to coat your hands and no smell.

Quite a lot of time was spent talking to the breeder finding out as many ins and outs about alpacas as I could think to ask. My sneaky motive? I have a yard that is big enough to be a home to two alpacas! And my Hubby, bless him, has said yes!! Now it may take some time to make a reality but in anticipation I have already named my two girls Millie and Maggie(!) and in my head I can already see the lovely hanks of homegrown and homespun alpaca yarn waiting to be made into something beautiful.

I was fortunate to meet up with my Fairy God-Sister (see previous post) and her Hubby at the expo. We walked around together enjoying the beautiful day and each other's company. And I went home with an early birthday pressie (my birthday is in November!!!).

A super duper beautiful pair of fingerless gloves.

As a confirmed yarnophile I love the simple fair isle pattern and the colour is a lovely teal blue. The yarn they are made from is 50% merino wool, 30% possum fur, 10% angora and 10% silk. Very exotic indeed. Possum fur yarn is from New Zealand where possums, an introduced species, are a pest adversely affecting the local flora and fauna. Their fur is absolutely beautiful - extremely soft and warm.

My fingers are adversely affected by the cold in winter (such a pity as winter is my favourite season) by Raynaud's disease - nothing deadly but certainly unpleasant. One way to counteract the symptoms is by keeping your hands as warm as possible and these should help to do the trick. Being fingerless I can wear them inside as well and still do things like the cooking!!

A truly thoughtful gift that appeals to me on so many levels. Thank you my lovely and much loved Fairy God-Sister!

It's a Craftsy Spring Sale

Craftsy, a most wonderful community platform for many crafting pursuits, is having a Spring Sale on their great courses (for those of us in the southern hemisphere we can pretend it's spring for a few days!!). I have taken quite a few of their classes and can categorically say they are terrific.

Piping Hot Curves Bag - My new pattern

Introducing ........

My new bag pattern.

I fell in love with this fabric - stunning purples and oranges and reds and pinks. What's not to love? I knew when I bought it that someday I would have the perfect project to showcase it.

Skip forward to my current teaching gig. I needed to design for the advanced bag class. I don't know how other designers work but for me designs or features that I want to use just seem to pop into my head. Obviously, there is a refrinement process but the initial design just seems to be there. So was the case with this one.

I wanted to use curves to challenge those who are used to only sewing in a straight line - but just a gentle curve - nothing scary!

I wanted to add a gusset - another sewing technique to add to the skill set and to give width to the bag. Uses different methods of adding the bag flap by adding a gusset. Another skill learned.

I wanted to add piping - a beautiful decorative design feature. Once learned this skill can be used in so many situations - clothes, quilt borders, bags!

I wanted to add an internal zipper closed pocket. Again, once learned, a technique that can be used to add a pocket to many items. Not to mention just working with a zipper - the poor humble zipper has such a poor rep!!!

All in all I am thrilled with this bag. It is a pattern I know I will make time and time again - just change the fabric and - voila - a different bag. Maybe one day I will even be able to use this one with the fabric I so adore - right now it is hanging in my local shop (Sew Special) where I will be teaching how others make it.

Knitting Swatches

Swatching has a bad reputation. It is generally one of those "oh do I have to?" type tasks all yarny folk moan about. We would rather just jump right on in and get started on the project we are eager to begin. Often we just don't do it - instead trusting to the yarn angels that our sizing will be correct (or am just talking about what I usually do?!?!?)

However, on this occasion I have had an exceptionally good reason to be swatching like mad. I have been blogging a bit lately about classes that I am now teaching at my local shop. These classes include sewing, knitting and crocheting. Well, in addition to developing and teaching these classes I am also researching yarns and patterns that we can stock to sell to our 'much starved for good quality' local yarn enthusiasts. Of course, the internet provides many opportunities for yarn buying but, honestly, there is nothing finer than being able to touch, see and feel yarn. A true 'yarnie' will automatically rub the yarn against their cheek and sigh in delight!! Yarn is such a tactile meduim to create with - in particular for garments that live nestled against your's and your Family's skin. I don't know about you, but I am a softness snob - if it isn't cuddly soft I am not a buyer. Trouble is, of course, 'soft' is such a subjective thing - hence the need to be able to touch before you buy.

We also want to benefit our Australian (as local to us as possible) indy yarn producers and dyers. Consequently, I have been talking and meeting with various suppliers and dyers and having myself a wonderful old time!

I wanted to show you a few of the talented peeps I have had the pleasure of 'interviewing' and the swatches I have made from their yummy offerings - oh the hardship it has been!! Lol.

The Demise of Google Reader

You may already have heard that Google Reader is being closed down on July 1st 2013. For those that don't know, Google Reader is a free platform where we can view, read and save the current posts from all your favourite blogs. With a simple click you can see all the current posts and posts you have not as yet read.

In order to keep up with all the news from the blogs you love to read you will need to find a new way to follow them before July 1st.

* The best way to do this is to have posts delivered straight to your email. This way you don't have to remember to keep checking in to each blog you follow. If you are like me, you follow so many that you would spend considerable time doing this - even if you could remember all your faves!!!

Product Review - The Boye Electric Yarn Ball Winder

I have a new toy to play with!! Introducing ......

The Boye Electric Yarn Ball Winder.

I should say at the outset that this is not a sponsored post

(just in case you were wondering!!!)

As a yarn lover I can't help but drool over all the wonderful and beautiful yarns that are out there just waiting for us to take them home. While I would much prefer to buy them already wound into convenient, ready to knit/crochet with balls, that would exclude some of the most beautiful. Those lovely, lovely hand dyed yarns that very enterprising, creative souls make to tempt us. So many luscious yarns come in hanks that need to be wound into balls before they can be used.

After many hours spent cajoling kiddos into holding up their hands to hold yarns ("mum are we finished yet???") I invested in a yarn swift (the clothes line looking thing below). This was my first venture into mechanisation. Next I bought a manual ball winder and this was a definite improvement over rolling the balls by hand. But this was a little hard on the wrists ("Karen are we finished yet???"). So I started to do a little internet surfing and found The Boye Electric Yarn Ball Winder. WHY DID I WAIT SOOO LONG???? It is fantastic and when combined with the yarn swift will roll a large hank in no time at all.

I won't go into the 'how to' here because there are quite a few you tube videos that do a great job of that. It is manufactured by Simplicity Creative Group and they have more info on their website.

It winds balls that are flat bottomed and can be pulled from the centre. The balls can also be wound into quite a large size. I wound one complete 200gram hank of sport weight yarn (4ply for us Aussies) into one flat bottomed ball. DK weight (8ply) and worsted weight (10-12ply) were better in 2 balls. I found the secret to smooth winding was in keeping the yarn on the swift loose and free moving. The electric ball winder has variable speed control so it can be easily adjusted to suit your pace. It also has a large suction cup on the bottom so it remains anchored to the table.

I wanted to use some sequined yarn for another project so I thought I would see how the yarn winder handled all those sequins sticking out from the yarn. Pleasingly, not too badly. I had to go a little slower and stop every now and then to ease a sequin through the feeding holes but generally this yarn was handled really well.

If you are thinking "should I take the plunge and buy?" - my answer is yes! More time saved to knit/crochet those beautiful yarns and less time spent rolling them into usable balls. And who doesn't want that?!?!?!?

Free Tote Bag Pattern

On monday of this week I taught my first sewing class. As I told you in a previous post it was a beginners class designed to introduce sewists to bag making and sewing in general.

Well, I am soooo happy to say that it was a hit and great fun. It was the first sewing class taught in the new classroom of my local sewing shop. There were a few equipment hiccups - like no power extension cord or power boards or jug to fill the iron!! However, thanks to the lovely student, Lyn (who had packed these sewing essentials!) we got started.

To celebrate the success of this, my first class, I have decided to make the pdf pattern free to all who may decide to give it a try.

I have listed this bag as a free pattern in my Craftsy store. If you have an account with Craftsy simply click on the photo and you will go straight to the pattern. If you don't have an account it is very easy and free to sign up. You can then download the free pdf pattern.

The bag is very easy to make and the pattern (like all my patterns) is supported by photographs for each step of production. This pattern can be simply modified to give it many and individual looks - just change the trim, add panels of colour in different places or add a button or zip. However, I think the fabric makes the bag!

A Tote and a Class

This coming monday my teaching adventure begins. My first class is a sewing class (later in April I will also be teaching knitting and crochet classes - I am a 'jill of all trades'!). It is meant for beginners - those lucky souls who are venturing into this wonderful world we all know and love.

The project for the class is .....

a relatively simple tote bag.

The class covers cutting out, following a pattern, making handles, seam allowances, adding a trim, making a base in a bag and lining a bag.

A New Crochet Along

You may remember from a relatively recent post that I am a serial 'over-committer' and with all the endless possibilities blogland presents to 'care, create and communicate' that I often overdo the 'commit'. . Well I have decided that going cold turkey on saying 'no' is beyond my capabilities and a weaning process is necessary!!

I have recently discovered a lovely crochet along that is perfect for me. Lisa at Cubby House Crafts, together with her sister Jane at Sweet Cinnamon Stitches, has started a pillow crochet along.

Why is this perfect for me? Lisa has told me that there is no absolute finish date and you can set your own pace - perfect. There are only sixteen small blocks to crochet - perfect. You can join the motifs as you go so when the blocks are done the pillow top is finished - pefect!

I have decided to change it up a bit and make my main colour teal and combine it with white, ruby pink and a chartreuse green (sadly the photo is not very kind to my colours!). I'm sure I will be able to find some lovey fabric to match for the back. What is so wonderful is that there is no pressure for deadlines and I can really relax and enjoy the process. I am doing lots of designing and sewing, knitting and crochet for the classes I am teaching very soon at my local button/sewing shop so this crochet along is just perfect for a little relaxing crafting as time allows.

My New Bag Pattern - The Pleated Romance Bag

Introducing .......

My new bag pattern.

I love this pattern!! Can I say that about my own pattern?!?!? Well, even if it is not politically correct etiquette I am going to!!

The opportunity was extended to me to teach sewing, knitting and crochet classes at my local sewing shop and I was so excited I could hardly contain myself! What a fabulous adventure (more about this later).

The Pleated Romance Bag was designed to teach the intermediate sewist class and the focus was to introduce students to pleating and installing a zipper.

I love the way the pleats give a subtle and mysterious glimpse of the fabric underneath. The more you put in your bag the more the pleats 'pop'. If you are a gal after my own heart your bag is always full so you pleats will always 'pop'!

The bag has an internal pocket and once you have added one it is a very simple process to add more! The zipper closure has fabric end tabs to give a clean and professional finish.

The pattern is available for purchase in my Etsy shop and my Craftsy shop.

It is my intention to make myself this bag as my everyday bag and I had hoped to have it completed by the time this post went live. But, alas, life has been lived and time ran out!!! However, when I have completed it I will share it with you.

However, my good buddy Rachel has completed hers so I wanted to share it with you so you can see how different fabrics can make a bag so completely your own. Beautiful isn't it???
