How to solve blurry image issue in custom Blogger themes (SEO Boost and Others)?

I can understand how frustrated you must have been since you are reading this post. I assume that you are using some blogger or wordpress theme and have been facing the same problem that I faced i.e images appearing blurry in the header or posts in your homepage. (In my case SEO Boost theme for blogger). I faced the same problem and got really confused. Then I searched for any possible causes and solution in the internet but they didn't work for me. Then I went into analyzing the HTML codes of the posts myself, compared the differences between the HTML codes of the posts that showed crisp images compared to the posts that had blur images; tried and tested various solutions and finally came up with a solution that solved the issue for me.

Anyway, I hope this solution will work for various blogger or wordpress sites as well which are facing similar problem. Here's the solution.

Please go to the part in your post where the image is or the header and edit it in the HTML view - Just before the image name at the end and after the image source path, replace anything with just /s320/. I can just tell that it has got something to do with the image resolution. (or s480, s600, s800 etc.)

Here's the real example of my own blog where I replaced whatever was there before the image name at the end highlighted in yellow and after image source highlight in blue with /s320/

I am not exactly sure how this works but this simple trick worked for me and I am applying the same solution in new posts with images and it is working fine.

So, Let's get started. I would like to keep it short and summarize on following points. After you have registered your website, you need to follow the following steps. I am going to provide reference of my own domain registrar (considering that I own a website i.e manibhandari.com.np) so that it will be easy for you to understand. Just follow the similar steps in case of your domain provider:

1) Go to blogger.com

2) Sign in with your existing Gmail ID (Create one if you do not have already)

3) Create a new blog

4) Provide blog name that resembles with your domain name

13) Goto dns.he.net> Quick Links> Free DNS, edit your website and add two 'cname' details as mentioned in the error message - See screenshot below

14) Goto https://support.google.com/blogger/answer/1233387 and create 4 'A' records as mentioned in this thread and edit your website details in dns.he.net like step 13 -See screenshot below

15) Click on 'Check Delegation' on top right area - if everything is ok it shows success message

16) Now try opening your website www.yourname.com in browser - it should open your blog/website with default settings

17) Also you need to go to Blogger.com > Settings > Publishing > Fallback subdomain and just write your domain name i.e 'yourdomain' and click on save. (without doing this your website won't open unless you provide www in the beginning i.e only www.yourdomain.com will open and not 'yourdomain.com' ) - See in screenshot below

That's it. You are done. Now you have successfully hosted your own website on blooger.com. You can start writing blogs and show it on your own website right away. Though the process may seem a bit long but follow the steps one by one and you can do it under 10-15 minutes.

Important: Some domain hosting providers like Godaddy may have options for editing cname and adding 'A' records on their own. In such case you do not need to go to he.net. But in most of the cases (for eg. in my own case), you only have option to change nameservers and no options for editing cname and 'A' records. In either case, if you follow the above steps it should work for you.

Note: This procedures was working till September 2020 and I have hosted my domain name the same way in blogger. There might be changes in the procedure while you may be reading this or in your country. You may need to do accordingly.

After using blogger for while, there's a common problem faced by every creator that the default blogger themes aren't so attractive or user friendly. As a result however good your content maybe or even if your site gets traffic, the bounce rate of the visitors will be high. It leads to poor performance of your site and it may not be able to generate any revenue. Without a good looking theme, your site wouldn't get approved for Adsense either which is really an irony as to how Google doesn't support its own product. It is very important to select a good looking theme for your site to create good impression on your visitors. It helps to retain the visitors and they are more likely to spend time on your site and view other posts.

Themes which are attractive, user friendly, responsive, customizable and SEO optimized are the first priority of every website owner. Though blogger adds some new themes occasionally but still there are not any themes that meets the expectations of users. We really wonder why Google being such a huge company that invests billions of dollars in research and development of its products and services hasn't been able to come up with some genuine theme for its one of the most popular platform. They could easily engage their developer team for a short period for creating some good looking themes for blogger. while such themes are readily being developed and marketed by third parties and even individuals.

Let's hope that Google will work to resolve this issue soon but till then we have to search for some alternatives and in this post I am going to share with you how can we change default blogger themes and change the look of our blog or website hosted in blogger.

Luckily, there is an option that we can upload our own theme besides default blogger themes and convert our blog into a professional good looking website. You can find a lot of themes for Blogger online. While you may need to pay for some premium themes but luckily there are a lot of themes which you can get online for free that are very attractive and easy to customize. Most of them are responsive and SEO friendly as well and they can really be helpful for your blogs and websites. You can get various themes as per you requirement like Personal blog, News blog, Travel blog, Photos blog, Food blog and even themes for business websites.

The process of uploading and installing new theme is really simple. You just need to download the free theme of your choice on your computer and upload it on blogger. When you download a theme, usually a zip file will be downloaded with some documents and an .xml file. The file having .xml at the end is your theme file.

Once you have downloaded the theme file, you need to go to Blogger > Themes and then click on the down arrow next to 'Customize' button. There you will see an option 'Restore' . Click on it and it will ask you to browse and upload the theme file from your computer. Go to the location where the .xml file of your downloaded theme is located and upload it.

That's it. Now you have the new theme installed and active on your website. You can check how your site looks like and usually need to make few customizations and changes in layout to customize the theme as per your requirement.

It is a good practice to take a backup copy of working theme before you upload and activate a new theme because there may be issues in the new theme. If there's an issue, you could always revert to the previous theme by restoring the backup.

If you are passionate about a particular topic and want to blog about it or want to create a blog for fun, more importantly if you are hesitant about spending money to do so, then you are in the right place. In my previous blog, I have explained how you can Get your website domain name for free. In this article I am going to explain how you can host it for free.

Hosting your website in simple terms means to purchase web space where you can place your blogs, images, videos etc. to be displayed on your website. Even if you want to show just your name in your website, you need to subscribe web hosting services and it can be both paid or free. In this blog I am going to specifically explain how you can host your .np domain for free on blogger.com. (Why to choose blooger.com as blogging platform) In my other blog, I will mention few other hosting providers which will provide you limited web hosting for free.

So, Let's get started. I would like to keep it short and summarize on following points. After you have registered .np website follow the follow steps:

1) Go to blogger.com

2) Sign in with your existing Gmail ID (Create one if you do not have already)

3) Create a new blog

4) Provide blog name that resembles with your free .np domain name

5) Login to your domain registrar ie. regiter.com.np

6) Edit DNS of your domain to ns1.he.net and ns2.he.net (Wait for it to get approved - May take upto 1 day) - See screenshot below

7) After the nameserver change is approved , Go to dns.he.net and register with your details

he.net (Hurricane Electric Internet Services) is an internet service provider that provides free services for editing your DNS details and lot of other services)

8) Login to dns.he.net and go to Zone Functions > Add a new domain add your .np domain - See screenshot below

9) Goto Blogger.com > Settings menu

10) Goto Publishing and click on custom domain - See screenshot below

11) Add your .np domain preceded by www ie. www.yourdomain.com.np

Isn't it amazing to know that you can register your personal or business website for free in Nepal. Moreover the whole process can be done online and it takes less than five minutes. All you need to provide is your personal details and valid identity document. The website you will register will be in .np domain and would look like 'yourname.com.np' or 'yourorganizationname.com.np'. While .com domain will normally cost you around 10$ to register and same amount for yearly renewal, you don't have to pay a single dollar for registering .com.np domain and it will be registered for lifetime.

Steps to follow for registering your Domain name:

Go to Register.com.np
Create an account
Login and search for domain name you want to register. If the name is available click on Register.
Provide necessary details like name, address, phone no, organization name etc. and attach valid document as specified.
You need to provide Primary and Secondary name server during registration. Initially you can provide any nameserver (eg. ns1.hosting.com.np, ns2.hosting.com.np etc.). It can be modified later. If you have purchased hosting, you can ask your hosting provider for the nameserver.
Request for registration and wait for approval.

Mercantile will verify your request and normally registers your domain name within one day and notify you in email. The registered domain will be listed in the 'Active Domain' list in your dashboard.

What next?

Getting your domain name registered is first step and now to get your website running on the internet you need to host it i.e. buy a hosting package from hosting provider and link your domain to it. Again usually you will find paid options for hosting which range from $1 to $100/year . If you wish to start your own blog, there are many options you will find in the internet to get started with. Most of us will be in dilemma in the beginning regarding which platform to choose from and whether we should pay for it, whether the blog will generate revenue to cover the cost and so on. Limitations of Blogger.com

1) No custom domain name (you blogs have .blogspot.com at the end)

Nevertheless, there are some workaround to overcome these limitations as well:

1) You can have your own domain hosted in blogger. If you wish to have a custom domain name instead of blogspot.com at the end, it can be done by redirecting your domain to blooger.com. You need to configure some settings form your domain hosting provider to point it to Google server and link your blogspot website with custom domain name. 2) Although the default themes in blogger are not so attractive on first look, there are plenty of options to customize fonts, colors, layout and appearance in such themes and you can easily have a professional looking blog if you give some time to it. You can do better if you have some programming skills. Also, there are themes which you can find online for free that you can use instead of default blogger themes. Please do ensure that they are from trusted sources since there may be chances of vulnerabilities or security issues in the themes provided by third parties. Why I chose Blogger.com?

Personally, I chose blogger.com because it fulfills my minimum requirement of blogging, it is free and easy to use. I do not need to worry about upgrading database and programs at backend periodically or maintaining my blog, I do not need to worry about backing up data in fear of loss due to hacking or vulnerabilities and so on. Google will take care of all these difficult stuffs and we can just focus on blogging.
