Welcome to the 200th episode of Most People Are DJs, I've been putting out these podcast episodes for over four years and I'm not sure how many other podcasts I can name that have made it to 200 episodes before fading away. With Most People Are DJs, as long as I keep to subjects I like and have something say about them, I don't see an end in sight. On this episode, I do what I usually do and play indie pop with bit of pop culture talk, but the songs are special because they are by bands I've met along the way of doing my show and they've become my friends.

Three guys, one moderator and a room full of blood thirsty fans—here's the tale of the tape!

Matt Busch, the 'Rock Star of Illustration', has created licensed art for Star Wars, done design work for TV shows like Nash Bridges and NY Undercover, and directed films, too. He also hangs out with real live rock stars like Kid Rock and System of a Down. Okay, I'm jealous, how 'bout you?!

Jason Palmer is an illustrator of epic proportions (hey, he does illustrations for a lot of epics). He's known for his work on properties like Indiana Jones, Superman, Star Wars and Firefly. Jason also has his own line of sweet licensed merch that he sells through his website (see below).

Randy Martinez is another cool guy and a great artist. He too rocks the Lucasfilm characters, but also keeps busy doing other stuff for Topps Trading Cards, Scholastic and Playroom Entertainment. Randy is a musician and songwriter, in addition to being an illustrator, and he does storyboards and sketchcards as well.

Dwight sat down with these fellas at a Dragon*Con panel and got 'em to talk about everything: drawing, the business of art, their personal stories, the whole nine. A good time was had by all and we thank them immensely for their openness and candor.

Brad Mackay joined us for a chat about Canadian cartoonist, Doug Wright. Brad is the organizer of the Doug Wright Awards, an award that recognizes the best in Canadian cartooning. More importantly, Brad is one of the three men(along with cartoonist Seth and DQ Chief, Chris Oliveros) behind the Doug Wright collection from Drawn and Quarterly. The collection is a true testament to the passion that Seth, Chris and Brad shared in seeing this important Canadian work in print. Here is what the Doug Wright Awards, have to say about the man himself. Doug Wright created the long-running comic strip Doug Wright’s Family. Born in England, Doug Wright came to Canada in 1938. His cartooning career really began when he landed a job as editorial cartoonist for the Montreal Standard. In 1948 he took over the reins of Jimmy Frise’s Birdseye Center, retitled Juniper Junction. Signing the strip “DAW”, he continued with it until its end in September, 1968. Wright created Nipper, a mostly silent comic strip, for the Standard in 1949. Wright excelled at the depiction of childhood and the daily charms and frustrations of late-20th Century domestic life. A skilled draftsman, his fluid cartoon figures whirled through meticulously-rendered backgrounds and suburban landscapes. Nipper was rechristened Doug Wright’s Family in 1967 when Wright moved from Montreal to Ontario. The strip enjoyed a long run, entertaining a generation of Canadians on a weekly basis until Wright ended it in 1980. Wright created a number of other strips and attempted to syndicate them, with some limited success, in addition to regular work in illustration and drawing syndicated editorial cartoons for the Montreal Standard and later the Hamilton Spectator.

Krug is cute, literary, and spouts surreal lyrics. Hes fine and all, but as far as Im concerned, Boeckners the man. Example: Boeckner has a six-inch tattoo of a Halloween black cat on his bicep. I know that because he was wearing a cut-off Metallica Kill Em All t-shirt when I saw Wolf Parade. He reminds me of a modern, more anxious Bruce Springsteen. I felt a story threading through these songs starting here. RANDY NEWMAN " GUILTY This man became famous for the Toy Story soundtrack. What a world! The warts and all approach to character is almost dull its so common in comics, but its still rare in songwriting. THE LANGLEY SCHOOLS MUSIC PROJECT " DESPERADO The Eagles song. These recordings come from the classroom of an elementary school music teacher who was a failed musician. He had the crazy idea that kids should be singing popular songs, the songs that they like. TOM WAITS " I DONT WANNA GROW UP I bought a cassette of Bone Machine for a dollar at the Salvation Army across the street from the School of Visual Arts in NY when I toured the school. I had heard of, but never heard Waits. I started the ignition on my moms old Dodge and popped it in the deck. I swore there were ghosts in my stereo. I was hooked. The Ramones covered this in the 90s. THE SHANGRI-LAS " OUT ON THE STREETS It shouldnt work. If someone were to tell me about it, Id think it was probably cornball garbage. But I buy it. All of it. The story thread seems to end with this one. LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND HIS HOT FIVE " WEST END BLUES I heard this in Ken Burns Jazz. DAVID BYRNE " GLASS, CONCRETE AND STONE My friend J.P. once told me about when he left Illinois for the first time to go to school. He got in his red pickup at 7AM and put in a tape that his childhood best friend, Andrew, had made for him. The tape hissed and Andrews voice came from the speaker. Then a click, indicating Andrew pressing stop on the tape recorder. Glass, Concrete and Stone began. Tears streamed down J.P.s face by the time Byrne reached the chorus. THE WALKMEN " EVERYONE WHO PRETENDED TO LIKE ME IS GONE My favorite modern band, easy. I love their textures, and their disaffected tone. FRANK ZAPPA " UNCLE REMUS Ive put this on every mix tape Ive ever made. Its buildup makes it a great transition. In high school I tried to find out if Zappa made any other music like it. He didnt. NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE " WINTERLONG (LIVE) When I was in high school, I thought that I would like to make a movie that ends with a slow-motion car crash, soundtracked by Winterlong. I probably shouldnt have told you that. SUICIDE " DREAMS I got this off the Open Ends: Musical Exploration in New York 1960-2000 CD from the MoMA store. I stole that from my mom. Bruce Springsteen covered their Dream Baby Dream live. THE MOUNTAIN GOATS " ALPHA RATS NEST John Darnielle writes the best sensory details of any songwriter Ive ever heard. And its anthemic enough for a car full of teenagers to wail along with at the top of their lungs. I consider him a gold standard. Same with Newman. R.E.M. " SHAKING THROUGH I love Stipes voice cracking during the bridge. Murmurs my favorite album. WHY? " FATALIST PALMISTRY Yoni Wolf writes about sex and death. How could I resist? Id like to cover this as a country song. TOWNES VAN ZANDT " PANCHO AND LEFTY I heard the story is that Lefty got paid to kill Pancho. Thats why Townes says, Pancho needs your prayers, its true, but save a few for Lefty too. He just did what he had to do, and now hes growing old. Theres an old screenwriting dictum that The audience cries when the characters dont. I get that here. Van Zandts warmth, subtlety, and empathy for his characters always surprises me, no matter how many times I hear his songs. Check out the documentary about him; Be Here to Love Me. Bernie was the man and now he's left us. I have to quote my friend Jeff Preston and say, "Just look at how many careers were started, thrived and are still going by just copying his style...but there was only one Bernie Fuchs!"

Here's a snippet of what was written about his passing in The Washington Post:

Bernie Fuchs, 76, an illustrator whose influential work for magazines ranging from Cosmopolitan to Sports Illustrated seamlessly blended qualities of traditional narrative with hints of abstract composition, died of esophageal cancer Sept. 17 at a care facility in Fairfield, Conn. He lived in nearby Westport.

Thanks for being great, Bernie. Your presence and influence will be missed.

Ep. 107: Dragon*Con Panel - Home Town Heroes featuring MARK BROOKS

To be honest, Atlanta has such a thriving community of comic creators, the theme for this panel could go on forever. That said, it was cool to kick it off right with the talented Mr.Brooks.

Mark Brooks gets mad fanboy love based on his dynamic charcaters and lush rendering style, kids. His resume is plastered with big selling titles (Dark Reign: Young Avengers, New X-men, Cable & Deadpool, Ultimate Spider-man). He's a comic artist and illustrator, but he also pokes his iron in a few other fires like sketchcards and the vinyl toy scene.

And just in time for EssDick (that's how you pronounce the acronym for San Diego Comic-Con), he and Brandstudio Press released a 48-page artbook of his stuff called Devilish. I think he and Alberto both had it available at the Con.

Mark is indeed a home town guy. He lives right here in Atlanta with his wife and son, and reps 'The A' very well. It was fun hearing him share some of his story.

Joining Brooks on the panel was another local creator, his friend, writer Paul Jenkins (Civil War: Front Line, Sentry, Mythos, Sidekick). He sat in with Mark and Dwight, and basically ended up interviewing Mark by himself. Good lookin' out, Paul.

Oh, and another thing. A raffle was held after the festivities ended by toy company, Sideshow Collectibles. The prize—a comiquette of Dagger from Cloak & Dagger that Mark himself designed exclusively for Sideshow. The winner—SOME DUDE WHO'S LAST NAME HAPPENED TO BE BROOKS.

**sniff, sniff** We smell a fix!

Anyways, big thanks to Mark, Paul, the panel attendees and Dragon*Con for the great time we had on this one.

Now, who should be next year's home town hero? Hmmm...

I wanted to tell you a funny story about how I decided to head for Chicago at the last minute and broke down half way between here and there, having to then battle my way back to Cincinnati fending off hordes of feral rabbits and rabid ferrets, but I can’t.

Maybe I wanted to tell you a sad story about how I’m now hooked on DDO and I’ve spent every waking minute of the past week leveling up, but I can’t.

The truth is that we did record this week, but I can’t get it to sound legible and it was too late in the week to do it again.

It’s strange, I could understand the conversation while we were doing it, but it’s a garbled cell-phone nightmare now.

That’s really a shame, because we talked to Patrick Brower of Challengers (comics AND conversation!) about the pre Windy City Comic Con party and he told us a great story about his first car.

My apologies.

He is a great cartoonist fresh out of the CCS whose work has been developing into an interesting mix of culture jamming meets personal introspection. I highly recommend his sugarcube minicomic.
