Alicia Keys' Background Vocalist: Whitney Keaton

I have had the pleasure of growing up with the amazing singer Whitney Keaton.!! She has been singing all her life and finally had the opportunity to sing background for the phenomenal vocalist Alicia Keys. Whitney Keaton was born and raised in Champaign IL. She has come from a family of singers, so it was only destine that she sing. Whitney has perform in several talent shows and events around town and really made a name for herself. She was opening up for local acts as well as some celebrities. She then began to take her career more seriously and started doing competition. That is when she found out about the tryouts for background with Alicia Keys. The whole town was praying for her and she came back with great news. She made the cut and would be traveling and singing all over for Alicia Keys. Since that time she has met and networked with other industry guru’s and have really made a name for her self.

During her time accomplishing her dreams, she also grew closer to an old vocalist friend and eventually they got married. He also did some singing and has travel all over the United States and over seas. They are now today sing background and traveling with Estelle. I am very proud of the advancements she has made and she really is representing my hometown quite well. They say that it is good to be in the background, but now I think its time for her to step out and shine.

The Industry has an ear for talent and there is only a matter of time before this singer becomes a superstar! The Value of My Business Plan

After conducting research on experts views on the value of business plans, I became more aware of why it was so important. Brain Hill and Dee Powers are people that specialize in helping companies take their business to the next level. In one of their articles that they wrote, they state that it is very important to write a very detailed business plan. When I first started writing my business plan I did not have a clue of where to start. I was not sure on the actual concept of what I want my business to do. I also did not have an idea of how it would generate revenue, but I knew I loved music and working with the artist.

After doing some research and seeing what other experts had to say, it really helped me have a clearer understanding of what is needed. I started focusing on how my business and its services would be beneficial to my clients and community. Then I started to look more at how I could market my products and services. I took the time out to learn my market and how exactly I was going to target. After learning some of these things, I had to go in and redo my whole business plan and ideas. I had to get it more focused and see how it would grad the attention of my audience and possible investors.

My now updated business plan is more focused on who my company is, what we have to offer and how we will market the product and services to get revenue and cliental. I have change my marketing plan and also updated and focused on the sales and profit margin for each month. Hopefully after doing these necessary changes to my plan it will be more attractive to investors and also I can get started on building a strong following and client base.

The most important part of the part of my business plan to an investor is the financial part, which includes sales, and profits. They want to know that if they invest their money how long will it take for me to pay them back and still make a profit. Also what kind of services and products I offer and the way I marketing will be just as important. I have to make my company stand out and if it doesn’t then I could be in for some issues.

Overall after reading articles from experts on business plans, it gave me a better understanding on how to research for funding and how to prepare to present my business. I also learn that I must understand how my business is different and how I can get my ideas to produce money and continue to be successful and beneficial to my clients and the community.

These two “experts” Brian E. Hill and Dee Powers, give some great information on how to create a great business plan.

About the experts:

Brian E. Hill is a successful educated man that helps many people turns their dreams into a reality! He has an MBA with a specialization in Finance and has held several position not to include he worked for a financial institute where he forecast and established planning and analysis functions. He also founded Profit Dynamics Inc and has 20 plus years experience in strategic planning and business planning.

Brain also has been recognized for his written articles and has been interviewed as an expert in the venture capital industry for numerous publications including Smart Money, Business Week online, and Business Journals in several major cities.

Dee Powers also has her MBA degree and have worked in several position including finances for the government, a retail firm and also in hospitality. She also has worked to develop financial reports, strategic planning, cash flow management and marketing planning. Dee Powers is also a founding partner in Profit Dynamics Inc, and have over 20 years experience in business planning, mergers and acquisitions, and marketing.

Dee has accomplished so much throughout her life including being interviewed as an expert on the publishing industry, from the author's point of view by The New York Times, Washington Post, the Associated Press and various local publications.

Advice:

After researching I came across some articles that Brian and Dee gives advice on what you need in your business plan and how to completed it. One main thing that stood out to me is that he said you must have a well written and thought out business plan before anyone would want to invest.

They also give out three key points when creating your business plan, First you must:

Write a business plan that gets the attention of investors or lenders.
Figure out the process of finding capital, and how to get started
Also prepare to meet with investors and know what to expect

Once you began to focus on these things above, you will have an idea of what direction you want to take your ideas. Another important thing Brain said was that you must narrow down what it is your business will actually be offering and know your target audience.

Overall in their article on fo4funding.com Dee and Brain emphasized on how you must create a business plan that will appeal to investors. My goal is to get investor so interested in my company that they are will to put up as much money to see my dream happen. The article also talks about how you have to be clear in your management, executive summary and financial section how the company can make money and appeal to the audience. If you cannot get this done then the business plan still needs work. Finally you must have a great management team and have goals set or the company could fail based off of leadership. Beyonce: 4-Night Stand at Roseland Ballroom!!!

According to billboard.biz Beyonce has made her mark again! On last Tuesday Beyonce did her 4-night-stand at New York Roseland Ballroom. Beyonce has taken many by surprise and once gain sold out each show within minutes. During this 4-night-stand she did singing, dancing and some story telling. She really dedicated this show to her fans, label executives and her old manager, her father Matthew Knowles.

More importantly not many artist today that I k now of can do a full 90 minute set full of dancing and singing, One thing that really made this show special was how she told stories of different situation she went through before she got to where she was. She began to giver her father Matthew Knowles recognition for supporting and doing things for the late group Destiny Child. She explain how he cancel one show the group had because Beyonce had went swimming and her nose was stopped up, and that really save them that night. She also gave credit to her father because he sent the groups song “Independent Women” to the producers of the movie Charlie’s Angel, without there permission but it was a success.

Beyonce was doing such an outstanding job with the 4-Night Stand tour that she sparks the attention of new Sony Chairman and CEO Doug Morris. She also had several other outstanding artists come to the show because her show drew so much attention due to being sold out every night. Beyonce is taking over the R&B, and pop, which is not a shock!

Overall Beyonce put on a great show for her fans and did not miss one beat with her dancing. She had her amazing all female band back her up and she as always performed in nothing but fierce wardrobe and shoes. Beyonce came in this tour full-throttle and did not stop until it was over. She graced the stage with her presence and she still has more to come. If you did not get a chance to go you really missed a great show.

According to most, many would say that the new digital landscape has cause a major disaster in the music industry. With all the reports and articles being published about the issue of digital downloading, many would believe that the music industry is declining. As of today many companies have not adapted to the new model of marketing and distribution online. However many companies including recording labels, publishing companies and such are embracing the digital technology. This change was covenant for many artists because it allowed them to distribute and market their music online.

My artist Ebonee and I utilize different social sites to do marketing and promoting to draw attention to her. Social media marketing was the best way for us to connect with a big group of people and get her music heard. We have also utilized certain key words so that we someone tries to search her in different search engines that she would be in the top searches.

After conduction some research, I came across an article on searchengineland.com. This article gave some great numbers on how the social media marketing has made an effect on people in different age groups, races and websites. Greg Finn states, that “the leading increase in social networking usage were those over the age of 35, which grew nearly twice as fast as those 18-35 in the same period”(Finn, 2011). This shows that many are adapting to the drastic change in digital landscaping. Everyone is utilizing different avenues of marketing through online technology. Not only does it save time but you can also target a certain market and gain a broader audience.

Lastly, in the same way that digital music for artists has allowed artist to connect and sale more music then ever before. The decline in purchasing CD’s physically has increased the sales on buy music through avenues like ITunes. Internet marketing, specifically social media marketing, allows an artist to target not only the local scene, but also an international base of fans.

Antonio “L.A.” Reid is official head of Epic Records!!!!!

According to BET, Antionio “L.A.” Reid is officially named the CEO of Epic Records!! I am not surprised about this at all! After all, he was president/CEO of Arista Records, which generated a half billion dollars annually. He is one of the most powerful Black men in the music industry.

While he commands a difficult music empire that includes some of the best-known and best-selling artists in the business, he also stays true to his producer roots by being intricately involved in the process. He has lead some of the biggest companies to success, like LaFace Records, Arista, Island Def Jam, The X Factor and Epic records. Not only does he succeed in executive roles, but he also is a great song writer, producer and A&R. I personally have no doubt in my mind that Epic Records will go to the next level. The oil drips from the top and the success of the company depends on its leadership. It was also stated that various artist from Jive Records will be brought to the new company, while others will be moved to RCA. Sony Music Entertainment has really made a great decision to have Mr. Reid lead their company. He will reunite with many artist he have worked with and also help push new artist. Many are called but few are chosen, and this beautiful vocalist definitely is making her way in the unsigned world of R&B. Kamari Long is a singer, songwriter, producer that caters to her fans desires by creating music that speaks emotions that most cannot find words to express. Her music is emotional, memorable, and melodic. This talented artist has been singing since she was a young child. They say the apple does not fall far from the tree, because both of Kamari’s parents are very musical She has song in church choirs, and even competed in choral singing in high school. They say that everyone deals with life situations in a there own way, but Kamari took it in a creative direction. She utilized her writing skills as an outlet to express herself. This was the beginning of Kamari Long the artist. Due to her family being in the army she has had the opportunity to travel the world at a young age and brings that to her writing. When you listen to a Kamari’s songs you will get lost in her world and storytelling. Kamari represents the strong, sexy, woman that knows who she is and does not conform for anyone nor anything. Her influences include Beyonce, Whitney Houston Keri Hilson, Destiny’s Child Karen Clark Sheard just to name a few. Kamari Long is currently a student at Full Sail University where she studies Recording Arts and is working towards a Bachelors Degree. She hopes to further he knowledge of the business and music aspect after graduation by staying in school to gain a Masters Degree in Entertainment Business so that she may continue to strive towards her goals as a Singer, Songwriter, Producer and future Business Woman. Interview with Entertainment Attorney Ben McLane

I had the pleasure of interviewing Attorney Ben McLane about his experience and thoughts on the music industry. Over the years Attorney McLane has advised many people on the complex aspects of artist management, music publishing, administration, music licensing and other areas of the music business.  Attorney McLane earned his undergraduate degree at Kansas State University. He also completed his law degree at Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, CA. Attorney McLane has a long list of experiences in the music industry with legal and business affairs at record labels, and has worked with artist managers. These opportunities were just a stepping-stone for Attorney McLane and his success. As of today, Attorney McLane and his partner Venice Wong run a well-known entertainment law firm in California called McLane & Wong Entertainment Law. He is licensed to practice law before all courts in the state of California. He has over 75 published articles on the music business and several other impressive accolades in the music industry. After contacting Attorney McLane, he was more then willing to do an interview with me.

In speaking with Attorney McLane, he expressed that he grew up loving music and decided to work on the business end because he did not have talent. His goal was to help other artists succeed and make it in the industry. I became very fascinated by how humble and excited he was about the careers of the artists he works with. He expressed some of the liabilities that he encountered in the music business. He also discussed copyright infringement, management and just his thoughts and opinions on making it in this industry. What do you recommend first time artists need to know?

Attorney McLane:

My best recommendation for a first time artist is to understand and master your craft, because if you do not put out good songs there is no real career there. Also pay attention to every detail!

What kind of music deals should artists look for?

Attorney McLane

The best deal an artist should look for is something with the shortest term with best pay!

Me:

What are your requirements to take on a new client?

Attorney McLane

My requirements are not too much! I just hope that they can pay for legal services and hopefully there is some form of talent there.

Me:

What are your fees for services?

Attorney McLane

My fees vary case by case but I try to work with my clients so that they get the best results for their career.

Me:

What are good ways for artists to get financing for projects?

Attorney McLane

I feel the best way for anyone coming in the industry is to invest in yourself. Try getting funds from your fans, friends, family, church and other areas. Your career will only be what you put in it.

Me:

When going over details for an endorsement deal, what should an artist watch out for?

Attorney McLane

The main thing to watch out for when looking over endorsement contracts is the restrictions on endorsing other products.

Me:

Do you think it is best for an artist to stay independent or sign a deal with a big record label?

Attorney McLane

It varies case by case! It all depends on what the artist’s expectations are and what their goals are for their career.

Me:

What is IP? Is that important in the industry? What is the best way to protect IP in the music industry?

Attorney McLean:

Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. It is very important to understand the different forms of IP and the best ways to protect them are to register and use them.

Industry Liabilities in the Music Industry (3 Cases)

Napster vs. RIAA

This case is an ongoing controversy on the Web. Napster is a company that allows people to find music by connecting them to the computers of millions of other users. It is the easiet way to find the MP3s they want, whenever they want, and share them with others. With all the people who support Napster, there are just as many that want to see it shut down. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is suing Napster for copyright infringement. RIAA found that 87 percent of the songs transferred through Napster are copyrighted. Musicians such as Dr. Dre and Metallica also sued Napster and now anyone who tries downloading their music will be banned. Napster has been banned on campus servers at 40 percent of the nation's colleges and universities. Copyrighted material being transferred through Napster has also upset several labels. Major labels, such as Warner Music Group, BMG Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Sony Music have sued Napster. They already won one partial victory in the suit, when federal Judge Marilyn Hall Patel rejected Napster's first attempt to have the case dismissed. Now companies in the industry wants more! They were asking the judge for a preliminary restriction against the company, to stop a huge volume of recorded material from being swapped through Napster while the suit goes to trial. Napster allows its users to trade MP3-format music files over the Web, which violates music industry copyrights and robs artists of royalties for the reproductions, according to the RIAA. Napster says it is protected under the fair use doctrine, similar to the use of videotape recorders. Another argument is that Napster is used to preview music, so the musicians who aren’t heard on the radio and all the music channels have a chance to be heard. Are these points good enough to sway the opinions of the people suing Napster? I’m not supporting either side, I’m simply providing you with some information and you can make your own decision. Warner Brother Music Group vs. YouTube

This was a very interesting case that really help me to understand how copyrighting is very important in this industry. In this case Warner Brother has told YouTube that they do not want any of there music on this website. Warner Brothers stated, that their artist were losing money because videos that are on this site, are being played and they are not getting money for them. With that issue at hand YouTube was ask to take down all videos that were connect with their label! Now Warner Brothers have several different subsidiary labels under them like, Atlantic Records, Bad Boy Records, Elektra Records and much more. Also under these labels are several artists and with this being a large company, it would take years to take down every video that was posted on YouTube. Overall this case was a result of a breakdown in negotiations between Google and the music label over a licensing deal. Warner Brothers and YouTube were trying to negotiate the renewing of the licensing but there was no common ground. I feel personally that both parties could have worked this out especially since Warner Brothers is the 3^rd largest label and YouTube is the most known company for videos. Eight-Mile Style LLC. Vs Audi

I really enjoyed reviewing this case and it had some good information about using music that was not authorized. According to billboard.biz, artist Eminem and his publishing company Eight Mile Style LLC, is suing Audi for there commercial for the new 2012 Audi A6 Avant. It was stated that they used his song “Lose Yourself’ as the background music. So lets check out the commercial bellow!

According to Eminem publishing company they already allowed Chrysler to use the song “Lose Yourself” for the Imported from Detroit campaign during the super bowl. As of now the issue is that there were some copyrighting violations and also Chrysler is upset that there personal idea and branding for their commercial was stolen by Audi. Eight Mile Style filed a law suite in court in Germany for the use of the music. As of now they are not sure what actions Chrysler will take with Audi. The commercial however has not been aired in America yet. The plan is to file a cease-and-desist order to stop the commercial from being aired or supplying payment for use of material. I have also attached the video, Imported from Detroit campaign through Chrysler. I honestly believe that there was some type of copyrighting infringement going on with this case and that Eminem’s publishing company and Chrysler will have a good case. Say Yo Feek produces music that fills a void that has been musically vacant for decades. Born and raised in Breaux Bridge Louisiana, his musical career began with his elementary school band. When is enough, enough? That is the question that many artists have asked in the music industry. So many artists have been taken advantage of in the music industry and it is now time to take back, what may have been stolen from you. Whether it was your money, your time, your trust, career or even your kindness. Every artist needs to understand how to choose the right person to manage him or her. I have been managing artist for 3 years now and I have learned a lot that could benefit you.

A manager is the key to the success of the artist! When choosing a manager you have to make sure that you have a connection with that person. There should be a mutual bond that would never break between you and your manager as the artist career grows. As a manager you must know how to keep all emotions back and not allow that to mix with your business. The key is to make sure that you are making the best decision for the artist career.

Next you should always discuss the wants and needs of both parties before any business in conducted. For instance both parties need to establish what there roles are and the expectations for that person. Then you discuss the percentage that the artist is willing to offer that manager and then get everything on paper and legal. The main goal is to keep an open communication between both parties and always be prepared to negotiate and deal. The artist must understand and have knowledge of what the manager can do for them in their career and life.

This industry is all about give and take! The key is to do your research and have knowledge of what you are getting your self into before signing any agreements. Stay positive and keep positive people around! You must be able to trust each other understand that the artist and manager are a team! As a manager, I allowed my clients to research and ask people questions about my character, because I want to have a good comfortable relationship with them. It’s not all about money, and if that is always the issues, then (red flag) its time to look for another manager. I believe that I am good at what I do but I am always willing to learn to be better, so do not sleep on me, because I do have skills!

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Angel Johnson, CEO/President of Bold Music Productions in Urbana IL. Angel Johnson is a strong woman that has been involved in the music industry for over 10 years. Coming from a family of musician and singers, it was only destine that she work in the industry. Having an uncle who worked in the music industry, as the manager of rapper Nelly really influence her to manage artist. She started out managing one of her friends at the age of 20. She then continued to do different things in the industry that lead her to meeting and working with some great artist. During this journey in her life, she had to learn how to negotiate contract deals with her artist. She has encountered many problems, but was able to over come them by taking the person from the situation and then solving the issue.

I requested an interview with her and she graciously accepted my invitation. I posed a few questions concerning negotiation deals in the music industry. Here is the result of our discussion:

In past negotiations, what were some ways that you were able to separate the people involved from the problem or issue being negotiated?

It is important to remain calm and stay focused on the key points of the negotiation. Compromise enough to make sure that you get what you want, without giving in to all the demands that are being made. People need to trust you and know that you have their best interest at heart, which is very important!

How have the music industry changed in the past 5 years?

The music industry has decreased in the past five years, but grew in its ability to reach the masses. Now with new media everyone has access to any kind of music they want. The draw back is that now the industry is over saturated and it is harder for those with talent to shine over the noise of everything else.

Where directions do you see the music industry going?

I see the music industry heading for a complete and total restructuring. Soon major labels will be completely irrelevant as now most of the mainstream artist emerging have to put in almost all of their own leg work in order to create a following and a buzz.

How important is artist development in the music industry?

Artist development has and will always be the most important thing for maintaining a certain standard of quality coming from artists. When you first start in this industry, you have no clue about what really goes in to being a full-time professional music artist.

What advice would you give new artists in the music industry?

Shut up, look and listen. Humility is key. Even at this stage in my own career, if I'm ever in the presence of those that have been doing this longer and better, I will always take every opportunity that I can to learn from them.

What advice would you give entrepreneurs in the music industry?

Prepare for a long tough ride. Some people make it in easily without much adversity, but for most of us, it's a struggle.

What do you attribute to your longevity in the music industry?

My ability to adapt and learn. I have a willingness to do whatever it takes in order to achieve my goals, and that's what I do.

Do you feel that people really understand the business aspect of the music industry?

Not until they've been in it for a while. There are a lot of people that get taken advantage of because of their lack of knowledge.

What was the hardest decision that you had to make?

Whether to be potentially homeless and do what I love to do, or be stable and miserable for the rest of my life.

What hard lessons have you learned while working in the industry?

You can't trust anyone, to a certain extent. At the end of the day, even people with the greatest intentions will ultimately look out for their own well being before yours.

Do you feel that artists need to become more than just an artist in order to have longevity?

Yes. You have to be diverse in order to survive. If you can flow then you blow.

What impact do you feel that the Internet have had on the music industry in the past 2 years?

It has opened many doors and forced the industry to begin changing the guard.

Where do you see the state of music now and in the future?

It will get better. We just have to figure out a way to make it work well again.

What changes do you feel that need to be made in the music industry?

People need to stop the facade of greatness. At the end of the day, we are all people. Once we stop holding each other back, we can all move forward.

On Thursday March 3^rd, 2011 Full Sail University’s Black Student Union had the pleasure of listening to Attorney Shannon A. Ligon speak on the entertainment business. Shannon Ligon earned her Juris Doctor Degree from Florida A&M University College of Law, and her Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Florida State University. She later received her certification in Television & Radio Broadcasting & Production from the CSB School of Broadcasting in 2004. Ms. Ligon has experience in the areas of Entertainment, Media & Business Law, where she has successfully worked within the entertainment and sports industry for the past eight years. With previous experience as an A&R and connections from over her nine plus years in the industry, she often assists clients in the areas of creative development and production. As many would say, sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. Ms Ligon previously worked Sports Agent Richard DeLuca, Big3 Records, and Clear Channel Communications.

Ms. Ligon is a very humble person and with very little time the audience was able to ask the main question, which was how do you get into the music industry?

Point #1:

Find your passion.

She said, “Whether it's music, fashion, film or sports; determine the industry in which your interests, desires and motivation lies and move forward in that industry. The entertainment biz is a grind, you MUST eat, live, and breathe it; so you might as well love what you do. The entertainment industry is a treadmill with no 'OFF' button. It is constantly changing with the influx of customer demands/trends, technology and new media. Staying on top of your hustle and your grind is imperative but if you love what you do, it may not seem so much like work.”

Point # 2:

Determine your niche.

She says, “ The entertainment business is so vast that you need to find your passion and your niche.”

Point # 3:

Network

She says, “ You never know who you are going to meet so always be ready to network.” This industry is all about going out and meeting people so if you are lazy this may not be the industry for you.

The last couple of pointers Ms. Shannon Ligon gave was always be excellent with whatever you do and never be afraid to lose, but never give up. This was really the speech most of us needed to hear. As the new generation of music moguls, many have told us this will not work or that we are not the best. However, Ms. Shannon Ligon has relit the fire for us all to accomplish the impossible. Not only does Ms Ligon practice law, but she also gives back to the community. She serves as founder of her own non-profit, Legacy Entertainment & Arts Foundation, Inc. (L.E.A.F. Inc.) which advances entertainment and the arts by creating scholarships for underprivileged youth. She is also a proud supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Staying connected with Music Associations to protect your music!

It has always been a dream of mine to work in the music industry! However I feel like everyone should understand the issues that can affect this industry and what associations are set in place to help. The Internet has changed the way we buy and listen to music. The changes have had both positive and negative effects on the industry. Many would say that the industry is having trouble, while others think that the Internet has help enhance the industry and brought new technology. The Internet has greatly enhanced piracy and influenced the use of online radio. Two major issues that the industry is facing are, downloading and streaming. The Internet has increased piracy problems in the music industry by making it easier to get music. Piracy is defined as illegally making copies of copyright material without getting permission (Colons English Dictionary). A company that can help with this issue is called RIAA.

The Recording Industry Associations of America (RIAA) is an organization that supports and promotes the creative and financial vitality of the major companies. Their job is to help protect the music, artist and company’s rights, weather it is illegal downloading, sales or breaking certain laws. The RIAA members are a combination of record labels. Downloading has always been an issue in the entertainment industry. According to The Recording Industry Association of America, “The Internet offers music lovers virtually limitless possibilities” (riaa.com). Many consumers have taken on the mind frame of, why pay when you can get it for free! Downloading was convenient and you could do it at anytime or place. I am honest to say that I had that same mind frame until recently when I stated educating myself on these issues. I was very unaware of how it was affecting the artist and companies that I love and wanted to work for. I began to read more about companies like RIAA that are set in place to protect our music industry and artist.

The RIAA has other companies that are connecting with them to help artist and other entertainers protect their products and services. One that I am very aware of is Broadcast Music Inc or BMI. This company helps with collecting fees and paying out royalties to people who composed, distributed or published the music. Overall BMI is set in place to make sure that your song gets license and if it is used by anyone that you collect your royalties. The company also offers other programs and resources like career building and song writing support.

Although I am not personally an artist I feel that everyone should be connected to this association, because we should be aware of the issues that is affecting the music industry. I work with different artist everyday and for me to not be aware of these issues is saying I do not care about my artist. Please educate your self on your rights and get all your music licensed. Also please tell your friends, family and associates to stop downloading and purchase the music that these artist, composers and producers have worked so hard on. How to live before you die by Steve Jobs (TED.com)

Listening to the speech that Steve Jobs gave at Stanford University commencement was very inspirational. For many of you that may not know Steve Jobs, he is the CEO and Co-Founder of Apple and Pixar. Some would not consider him their most favorable person, but he has created some of the best technology that we use today and that was all because he thought outside the box. He did not settle and adapt to what the society wanted but did what made him happy. However in his speech to the graduating class of 2005, he encourages them to pursue their dreams and do not allow the setbacks in life to stop you, but use them as opportunity to do better. Steve tells three stories in his life that could have set him back but instead, he used them as stepping stoles to learn and do better.

The first story that Steve told was about connecting the dots! He explains how his mom put him up for adoption and felt like people that have a college education should adopt him. However, when he was born, the family that planned on adopting him decided they didn’t want him but wanted a girl! Later, a nice family finally adopted Steve. He went to college at the age of 17 to Reed College, but only attended for 6 months before he dropped out. Then he explains how he was tired of taking classes that he did not like, so he continue to stay on campus with friends and take classes that only interest him. He was very interested in calligraphy and he learned as much as possible and he found it fascinating. The moral of this story is that with all the trials and tribulations that he went through he still did not give up. He continued to educate himself and take classes that were of interest and because he did that he was able to create the computer we all love which is the Mac. This computer has multiple typefaces with different fonts, and this is all because he dropped in on the right type of class and didn’t give up because of his circumstances. Steve jobs states, “ it was impossible to look at the dots forwards, but it was very clear looking backwards at them ten years later”.

The second story he talks about is the love and loss! This story explains how he began his career at an early age with his partner Woz. They developed the product Apple in Steve’s parents garage and after years of hard work they grew this product and company to estimated $2 billion with over 4000 employees. He explains that he was successful and very happy but all that changed when he got fired from apple! He was confused on how he could get fired from the company he started! The issue was that he hired someone that he though would be good to run his company but as the company grew, both there ideas and values began to collide and they had a falling out. Well the Board of Directors for the company ended up siding with the other guy and Steve was let go. He was humiliated and hurt, however he did not allow that to get him down because he still loved what he did. So what he did was start over and that allowed him to become focus and creative. Over time he started a company called Next, then create the company Pixar and got married. The funny part is that Apple bought his company Next and he returned to apple. The life lesson in this story is that none of this would have not happen if he did not get fired from Apple. He states, that sometimes like with come at you with a brick, but don’t lose faith! (TED.com) He kept going on because he loved what he did and did not allow the downfall to change that.

The last story is about death! In this story he explains how he was diagnosed with cancer and how the doctor told him he had a tumor on his pancreas. He was explain that this was a cancer that was incurable and that he should go home and get his affairs in order, because he was going to die. However there is nothing to hard for God! He begins to explain how he went back for a biopsy. The results showed that he had a rare form of pancreatic cancer that was curable with surgery. He got the surgery and is here to tell his story. Overall he explains that no one wants to die. He explains that no body wants to die however we all share the same destiny. He also says that death is a way of clearing out the old to bring in the new. We must live our life to the fullest and now allow death to live it for us.

Overall this speech was very inspirational to me because he showed how is life had a lot of ups and downs but he did not allow his self to live someone else life. He lived and loved his own life and followed his destiny. I feel that for anyone trying to go into their dream field, you should utilize what Steve Jobs said in this speech. Do not give up and keep the faith that things will work. Sometime our destiny has some curves in it but as long as we go with the flow we will get to the final destination of success. Honestly this news is not a shock to me, because he is just an outstanding artist, performer and lyricist. If you did not know, he was signed to Atlantic Records through Jonsin’s Rebel Rock Entertainment and Grand Hustle label, because of his song “Cloud 9” in 2006! He continued to work hard and not give up on his dream. B.O.B is not conforming to the standards of this industry and more artists should be like him. I do not see him going any other way but up.

Lil Romeo is President of No Limit Forever Records???

There is no limit or boundaries for the Miller family! Lil Romeo once again turns some heads in the news, and it is not for basketball or acting but music! Hip Hop legend Percy (Master P) Miller really made some noise with his Record Label No Limit in the late 1990’s. Coming from the ghetto of Louisiana, Master P was no stranger to the struggle.

Scoring a huge distribution deal in 1995 with Priority Records was just the beginning of his success.With being able to keep all ownership of his music he really came in the game with a business mind. He sold over 75 million in records sales and was name one of the highest top 40 paid entertainers in The Forbes magazine. However as time went on No Limit Records began to fall and finally closed for good in 2003.

I am personally excited to see what this UCLA college graduate has in store for this up and coming Label!

It is now time for Lil Romeo to fill some big shoes and take off where is father Master P left with No limit Records, Romeo has teamed up with his brother Valentino (Vice President of No Limit Forever), his uncle Silkk The Shocker (COO -Chief Operating Officer") and cousin Black Don (Senior VP of A&R).

Singing Legend Teena Marie Pass Away

ATTENTION: It has been announced that Soul Singer Tenna Marie has passed away today December 26, 2010 at the age of 54. As of now the cause of death is unknown! She was one of the pioneers of R&B music that I remember from the old Soul Train days. She was an amazing artist and will be truly missed. Coming to you live, I would like to introduce outstanding lyrically inclined underground artist XV! This Wichita, Kansas native has release his mix-tape Everybody’s Nobody, which was cosigned by DJ Enuff. This mix-tape has people going bananas and if you have not heard it then you must be sleep!

Donavan Johnson started rapping when he was 15, and that is where he developed the name XV. This 24-year-old artist has had a lot of influence, which lead him to being such an amazing rapper. XV is a limited addition, and as he says, “he is only looking back to see how far he’s come.”

XV would not be considered your average MC! He came from a great background in the Midwest and most would even consider him nerdy. He has always had a desire to pursue music! So he took that vision and put action with it, and that brought him to his dream! Unlike any rapper, XV creates stories that could relate to an average video game, TV watching person. Those are his fans, and he does not re-create himself for anyone.

With his music, XV compares trying to make it in the music industry to high school, where he says he was also a “nobody” trying to be “somebody.”

I have been following this guy on You-Tube for a while now, and honestly, I was shocked that he wasn’t signed sooner! XV will fit in perfectly with his new family at Warner Brother! I also applaud him for being outside the box and not conforming to fit what society see as rappers.

I will continue to support him and his music and if you have not heard about him you better CATCH UP!
