Good thoughts, Sarah — although I have a few other things for you to think about. The USE of television seems to me to be the problem. If parents/other supervisors don’t make the appropriate decisions about what TV is appropriate, then you’re right. TV is too often used as a babysitter for kids of all ages. Bad parental choices!
The Olympics in Sochi were a wonderful broadcast. Also there are exceptional TV shows on PBS channels, History Channel, Weather Channel, etc. All TV programming just cannot be put in the same category as Fox, NBC, ABC, CBS, etc.
Another factor promoting all the problems you cite can be directly related to other media, especially internet sites, including so-called “games” & pre-teen “play” websites.
I agree with you about the problems, but think the causes are much broader than simply the invention of television.

I am reading Zinn’s book as well to use as a counterpoint to the textbook I will use with my 8th grade students. I agree with your critique, Zinn does use examples that only support his claims. His work is no better cited than our history book either.

I think it would be a mistake to choose Zinn’s version of American history as the only right one, but I feel that way about every source of information. Zinn’s book makes the point that all histories are stories of history and all of them are subjective.

I’ve actually watched some of those “ancient aliens” programs on Netflix with my son and they DID lead to some great discussions… he got really into those last summer. You really should watch this TedX talk by Seth tho if you haven’t….. The universe is so big, and our discoveries about ‘comparable’ planets to our own are so recent and staggering….. it’s really just ludicrous to imagine we could be alone in a universe as big as ours. 🙂

I checked it out and it was good and seemed like a lot of work really did go into it. It was really a different style of video though which was interesting too.

I’m not sure how long people who dont play minecraft would last, or even some that do, and im not sure how much of a singer you would want to be but I think that at least a better beat would help it out.

I accept your proposal. However, as we watch this together I want us to watch and see if the characters act consistently disrespectful to teachers and adults. This, as I recall, was my main concern and complaint against this program.

Maybe when we watch this we can pay special attention to how the main characters treat adults, and keep some notes on what we see/observe.

Does that sound like an acceptable plan?

I realize this is an old post. However, I just came face-to-face with this ridiculous law today. It’s dumb. I can’t take a baby in a baby carrier in any liquor store to go buy liquor. Is the baby buying liquor? No. Am I buying liquor for the baby? Umm, no. I, an adult of legal drinking age, am buying liquor. Or I would be, but since you can’t take your child with you into the store, I am not. Ridiculous.

Andy: We’re not teaching Rachel she “deserves the wrath of a deity who is personally responsible for murder of millions.”

We’re also not teaching her she’s a terrible person. Quite the contrary: God has created her wonderfully in His own image.

We are teaching her that we’re all tempted to act selfishly in ways that can hurt others, and in ways that go against God’s will for our lives. We’re all tempted to make bad choices. Even wonderful little 8 year old girls, and 40 something year old dads. We all sin and are tempted to sin.

I think Rachel’s prayer to “Help us to love others and make better choices” is a heartfelt expression of how she understands these ideas.

This doesn’t have anything to do with people killing in God’s name in the past or today.

Seeing this makes me want to cry. Makes me want to hug this little girl and tell her that she’s perfect the way she is. How bizarre must be the world of a person who can look at a little girl who tries so hard and tell her that she’s a terrible sinner and deserves the wrath of a deity who is personally responsible for murder of millions, who commanded others to murder millions, and in whose name countless other millions were murdered; and that this little girl will not be whole until she obtains the supposed forgiveness of such deity.

Your use of simile and metaphor is not at all clumsy, it is very appropriate and creates great atmosphere to your poem.

This is informative and hilarious! Your son shows that his videos outperformed those of his sister and at some point seems to say that when you posted a video, it hurt business but I was not too clear on that one for sure. He makes a persuasive argument with his time-line of events, charts, and analysis that he made the best videos and he earned the most money! Your son is a great businessman. Both of your kids must make great videos if they both had videos to go viral or at least become very popular. I would be interested in seeing the videos. Can you post links. Allyson, It isn’t nice to go around saying your rich. So don’t be rude. Plus you wouldn’t be rich if your parents didn’t go to college and get a good job. Instead of bragging, maybe you should be working hard so you can be rich like your parents when you grow up.

Wes- Our family is grieving with you this evening. We lost
our 2 dear dogs both in the last year. Those furry friends work
their way into our hearts and become full-fledge family members. We

I love your ideas about Toy Story. I’m going to share them with my nephew Jackson who is a big Toy Story fan. He is the one who really got me excited about Toy Story. He is a first grader and will appreciate your point of view.

I am so glad you shared this lego creation! How long do you think you’ve spent building it in all? I know you are very proud of this.

My one suggestion is not to use the word “crappy” when you write. It’s slang and not quite profanity, but most people don’t consider it appropriate when writing.
