I used to play magic when all my friends were new at it, but as my friends got better and better I noticed that their decks started to become more and more mainstream and follow the treends that people at our local fnm had. They went head first into Jund and I haven't seen them play anything original since. I'm just as compitent at magic as then and I know a great deal of the rules and I understand decks strategies and all, but I still find the most fun from magic comes from creating something new and watching it interact with the other decks. I simply can't find much joy playing the game anymore because I just can't compete without picking up a trending deck that costs an arm an a leg to get and not even have it be our own. It gets to the point that all the funnest cards are twenty some bucks at the minimum. I never saw magic as a game you needed to have a part time job to play before, it's more expensive than wow and it's a card game. Maybe I'm too young to understand where the fun of playing someone else's deck idea comes from but maybe alot of the current magic players need to consider getting back their "deck-identity" as we used to call it, and I think wizards of the coast should at least make a format that people can play in with some creativity and individuality. Maybe my points seem invalid to you guys but like Matt said people don't seem to want to think about the heart of matters. Or perhaps everyone has their own reasons to play magic that I don't seem to share and I just need to get out. Shouldn't the competition stay inside the game instead of spreading outside of it. All magic cards should be the same flat price, ten cents for a single, a dollar for a pack. Then everyone has access and the competition stays inside the game. After all it's just paper and it takes the players agreement to make the game work anyway, why should have to pay so much money to use our imagination? It's appalling and shamefull that someone would take such advantage of people like us. The player base is big enough that if they made it free it would still spread, tournaments would still go on. Oh well, no one's gunna read this anyway, it won't make a difference.

I've been working on some techniques for advanced mana bases(with only basic lands b/c nonbasics simply improve the mana base and you can put them in after your calculations as you showed in your article)taking into account the way a deck plays and not necessesarilly just it's card color count. Sorry, I'm not good at depiction, er explenation, say I need to hit that double black mana turn two and then hit double white turn five and keep dropping lands consistantly till turn seven, if you simply write a bunch of stats and tables up for your deck you'll notice a lot of paterns you can use to make quite the extrordinary mana base, just with basic lands. I've only been working on this for three days but I've made quite a few interesting correlations. They've helped me change some decks in ways I never thought I would. I'm sorry if I come off as a jerk or something but I just wanted to say that if you just look into it as I've said you can do much more to fine tune your base, it might just make it say five or ten percent better for quite a bit more work but it's quite invigorating to work so close to your deck in a sense. Maybe I'm a loon but you should try it out, I can't imagine you'd be disapointed. Sorry again if I've annoyed you here. I really did like your article though you make your points very well.

I agree with you about Serra Ascendant in two headed giant format, I love this format but nowadays is becomming very frustrating, actually I only play MTGO and people there abuse of this kind of "broken" card and combos in 2HG, the worst part is: in internet people have balls to call you a loser or other stuff when they are playing this kind of "no skill" strategy, I don't have problem losing a game, but this kind of actitude makes the games loses all the fun as you said, is time for Wiuzards revies some rules for 2HG or people will leave it.
By the way, congratulation for the great article.

I disagree with it being all psychological. You only get a mythic 1/7 of the time. So there is a very real lack of value in a box when you don't get any of the 30 dollar chase mythic you were wanting.

Hell some of them don't even make sense to me. last weekend i was in a draft and got a Jace from M12. I thought hmm well i guess he'll be fun but i don't really want to play mill in Type 2 so not sure what i'll do with him.
But then i looked him up and he's still worth $30 bucks!

How is that? He's a card engine that costs five and does nothing else unless you're trying to mill. A very small sub set of decks.

What happened in game 1? The video cuts out after you pause for MODO lagging. I assume Tim won, but it's possible that you came back to get him.

Suggestions for your deck...

Glistening Oil + Hydra Omnivore = EDH Multiplayer own-age. =)

Molten-Tail Masticore with Phyresis also would be pretty bonkers too.
Sure, you'd be exiling creatures in the process, but, 4 direct infect damage is a pretty fair trade in my opinion.

And since you're playing G-U-B, your opponents would more than likely never see it coming. It's also a legal target for Glissa to return should she attack.

Speaking of Glissa, I see you're not running Grappling Hook. Consider running it for Glissa.
