What a shame and mockery of citizens’ civil & political rights. This brutality of the BJP Government is nothing new. In 1991 the same BJP Government under Shanta Kumar, the then Chief Minister of HP was responsible for the deaths of 3 innocent young men in Kotgarh, District Shimla when people had gathered for a rally to request the State Government to enhance the MSP for apples that year and Shanta Kumar ordered the police to open fire on innocent and unarmed people at a peaceful rally to pressurise the public to give up support for this peoples movement. The State Government not only brutally murdered the 3 young & unarmed men but also beat up and illegally detained hundreds of other rallyists, including women, in Bhekalti and in Shimla. All these facts are well-known & not necessary to repeat. But we have to remember that the BJP Government is heavy handed and totalitarian in outlook, particularly when it comes to people of Northern and Eastern parts of HP. What a shame.

Today’s Bhaskar carries a news item that the himfed has so far provided about 50000 cartons and the hpmc ‘shall provide’ 5 lacs to apple growers. This is for an expected crop of 4 crores boxes. The percentage can easily be worked out. Still our horticulture minister says that all iz well and rules out the woes of the farmers as opposition propoganda!

The result of closure of the Gumma factory is now before us. Private parties who make packing material have started showing their true colour and created a shortage in the market with the result that hapless farmers are running from pillar to post. Our earlier leaders were far sighted who had established this factory for the cause of apple growers, but what to speak of the present lot!

With so much mess created by the administration,as seen this year, I doubt if the ruling party legislatures of upper Shimla will be returned next time.
