It is often challenging to calm our minds in the evenings. In our busy lives, we have multiple tasks to complete by the end of the day and several new assignments to start the following morning. This can make it difficult for us to be present, relax, and calm our minds enough to get a good night’s sleep. As we age, the quality of our sleep significantly impacts our productivity and well-being throughout the day.

Meditation has been a practice for thousands of years and is still popular among many people around the world. Traditionally, people meditated for religious or spiritual reasons; however, in modern times, it is often simply a way to calm the mind and achieve mental clarity. Regardless of your intention, this easy meditation will help you focus, calm your mind, and get a good night’s sleep.

This meditation belongs to the Chinese Bagua martial arts tradition and is known as a stillness practice within the lineage. Many martial arts traditions recognize the importance of practicing stillness to balance the outward movements of their practices, which helps maintain health and longevity.

Step 1: Lie on your back in bed. Arms and legs are gently outstretched, and the head rests comfortably on a pillow without being excessively elevated. The tongue curls up to gently touch the roof of the mouth in the depression about three inches behind the teeth. The tongue and jaw should be relaxed. If any saliva is produced, let it slide gently past the tongue and down the throat.

Step 2: Relax your forehead, close your eyes, and gently focus your mind on your navel (belly button). In Taoist meditation practice, the navel is called the Shenque point.

Step 3: Breathe naturally while keeping your focus on the Shenque point. Mentally call your energy back to your center as you continue breathing. You are calling your energy back from everywhere that you left it during your day. We leave pieces of our energy behind throughout the day by interacting with people, places, and different situations. Calling your energy back should be intentioned with a gentle invite for it to come home. You may experience images of different scenes from your day or distant past as your energy reconnects. Do not focus on the images; allow them to happen and disappear while you continue to focus on your navel. You will find yourself becoming calmer and more still. At some point, the meditation will feel complete. Then, end your meditation, roll onto your side, and go to sleep.

As you continue this practice night after night, you should experience feelings of warmth and movement around the navel. This is a healthy sensation indicative of your energy gathering and building in this area. Over time, this will lead to deeper, more restful sleep and more energy and strength during your waking hours.

As the sun shines brightly and the temperatures soar, our bodies crave a refreshing beverage to beat the summer heat. While iced […]

As the sun shines brightly and the temperatures soar, our bodies crave a refreshing beverage to beat the summer heat. While iced coffee and sugary drinks may seem tempting, why not reach for something more revitalizing and nourishing? Mint and Hibiscus are the perfect companions for those sunny summer days. In this blog post, we’ll explore the delightful benefits of mint and hibiscus tea and why they should be a staple in your summer beverage lineup.

Cooling and Hydrating: When the mercury rises, our bodies naturally seek ways to cool down. Mint tea, with its invigorating aroma and cooling properties, provides an excellent solution. The menthol present in mint leaves has a natural cooling effect on the body, helping to regulate internal temperature and provide relief from the sweltering heat. Additionally, herbal teas like hibiscus are known for their hydrating properties, making them an ideal choice for quenching your thirst during hot summer days.

Refreshing Taste: What better way to invigorate your taste buds than with a sip of mint or hibiscus tea? Mint tea offers a refreshing and uplifting flavor profile, with its crisp and slightly sweet taste. It’s the perfect pick-me-up to combat fatigue and revitalize your senses on a warm summer afternoon. On the other hand, hibiscus tea offers a tangy and vibrant flavor, reminiscent of cranberries. With its natural tartness, it provides a zingy and refreshing twist to your summer sips.

Health Benefits: Apart from their delightful taste, both mint and hibiscus tea offer numerous health benefits. Mint tea is known for its digestive properties, helping to soothe an upset stomach after a heavy summer meal. It can also aid in relieving headaches and promoting mental clarity, allowing you to enjoy your summer activities to the fullest. Hibiscus tea, on the other hand, is rich in antioxidants and can support heart health by helping to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

How to Prepare and Enjoy: Making mint tea is a breeze! Simply steep a handful of fresh mint leaves in hot water for about 5-10 minutes, strain, and enjoy. For an extra twist, add a squeeze of lemon or a drizzle of honey. To make hibiscus tea, steep dried hibiscus flowers in hot water for around 5-7 minutes, strain, and sip on its vibrant goodness. Both teas can be enjoyed hot or cold, depending on your preference.

Where to Find Quality Herbal Teas: To truly savor the benefits of mint and hibiscus tea, it’s essential to source high-quality ingredients. Local tea shops and specialty stores often offer a wide selection of herbal teas, allowing you to explore various flavors and blends. If convenience is your priority, reputable online tea retailers provide a vast array of options, delivered right to your doorstep. Be sure to choose organic and sustainably sourced teas to ensure the purest and most wholesome experience.

Conclusion: As the summer sun beams down, indulge in the delightful and nourishing experience of mint and hibiscus tea. These refreshing and healthful beverages offer a host of benefits, from cooling and hydrating properties to tantalizing flavors that invigorate the senses. So, embrace the season and sip your way to wellness with a cup of mint or hibiscus tea in hand. Cheers to a rejuvenating and delicious summer!

In a world filled with synthetic medications and processed foods, the resurgence of interest in herbal remedies and natural healing is both […]

In a world filled with synthetic medications and processed foods, the resurgence of interest in herbal remedies and natural healing is both refreshing and enlightening. Preparing herbal blends is an ancient practice that allows us to harness the therapeutic power of nature to support our health and well-being. In this blog, we will embark on a journey to discover the different ways to prepare herbal blends, unlocking the secrets of nature’s bounty to enhance our lives.

Infusions

Infusions are perhaps the most common and accessible ways to prepare herbal blends. To create a simple herbal infusion, bring water to a boil, and pour it in to a 32 ounce jar with your desired herbs. After putting the lid on, allow the mixture to steep for 4-6 hours minutes, depending on the herb’s potency. Strain the liquid and enjoy the herbal goodness.

Decoctions

Decoctions are excellent for extracting the healing properties of tougher plant materials, such as roots, barks, and seeds. To make a decoction, gently simmer the herbs in water for an extended period, usually 20-30 minutes. This process ensures that the therapeutic compounds are effectively released, resulting in a potent herbal remedy.

Tinctures

Tinctures are concentrated liquid extracts made by soaking herbs in alcohol or a mixture of alcohol and water. The alcohol acts as a solvent, drawing out the active constituents of the herbs. Tinctures have a longer shelf life compared to teas or infusions and are easy to use – just a few drops diluted in water can work wonders.

Herbal Oils

Herbal oils offer a luxurious and effective way to experience the benefits of herbs externally. Creating an herbal oil involves infusing dried herbs in a carrier oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil, over a few weeks. The infused oil can then be used for massages, skincare, or as a base for various homemade products.

Salves and Balms

Herbal salves and balms are the result of combining herbal oils with beeswax or another solidifying agent. Once the mixture solidifies, you get a convenient and portable herbal remedy that can be applied topically to soothe skin irritations, cuts, and bruises.

Herbal Steams

Herbal steams are a fantastic way to inhale the healing properties of herbs for respiratory and skincare benefits. Simply add a handful of dried herbs to a bowl of hot water, drape a towel over your head, and lean over the bowl to allow the steam to envelop your face. It’s a simple yet effective method for congestion relief and cleansing the skin.

Herbal Baths

Herbal baths offer a relaxing and rejuvenating experience, combining the healing properties of herbs with the soothing effects of warm water. Place your chosen herbs in a muslin bag or a tea infuser and let it steep in the bathwater for 10-15 minutes before you indulge in a luxurious herbal soak.

In Conclusion

Preparing herbal blends is a beautiful art that connects us with the age-old wisdom of herbal medicine. Whether you prefer a comforting cup of herbal tea, a soothing herbal oil massage, or a revitalizing herbal bath, nature provides a vast array of options to support our health and well-being. As with any natural remedy, it’s essential to do thorough research and consult with a qualified herbalist or healthcare professional before using herbs for medicinal purposes. So, embrace the power of nature and embark on a journey to explore the wonders of herbal blends for a healthier and happier life.

Summer, the season of sunshine, sandy beaches, and outdoor adventures, brings with it a burst of energy and joy. However, as the temperature rises, so do the health challenges. From heat-related illnesses to skin concerns, it’s essential to prioritize our well-being during this vibrant season. In this blog, we’ll explore some practical tips to stay healthy and make the most of the summer without compromising on fun.

1. Hydration is Key

As the mercury climbs, our bodies require extra attention to maintain adequate hydration. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and heatstroke, so it’s crucial to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages as they can contribute to dehydration. Keep a water bottle with you at all times and sip on water even if you don’t feel particularly thirsty. Adding slices of fruits like lemon, cucumber, or mint to your water can make staying hydrated more enjoyable.

2. Sunscreen and Sun Safety

While soaking up the sun can feel fantastic, it’s vital to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen with a high SPF should be your best friend during summer. Apply it generously on all exposed areas of your body, and don’t forget to reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Along with sunscreen, wear sunglasses with UV protection and a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face from direct sunlight. If possible, schedule outdoor activities before 10 AM or after 4 PM when the sun’s rays are less intense.

3. Embrace Light and Fresh Foods

Summer is the season of abundance when it comes to fresh fruits and vegetables. Take advantage of this by incorporating a variety of colorful produce into your diet. Fruits like watermelon, berries, and citrus are not only refreshing but also packed with essential vitamins and antioxidants. Salads with leafy greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other seasonal vegetables make for a light and nourishing meal. These foods not only keep you hydrated but also provide the nutrients your body needs to thrive in the summer heat.

4. Exercise Wisely

Maintaining an active lifestyle during summer is excellent, but it’s essential to exercise wisely in the heat. Avoid intense workouts during peak hours when the sun is at its strongest. Instead, opt for early morning or late evening workouts when it’s cooler. If you prefer outdoor activities like running, hiking, or cycling, do so in shaded areas or parks with trees to reduce sun exposure. Alternatively, consider indoor activities like swimming or joining a yoga class in an air-conditioned studio.

5. Beat the Heat: Cool and Relax

When the summer heat becomes too much to handle, don’t be afraid to seek refuge indoors or in shaded areas. Air conditioning can provide a comfortable respite from the scorching temperatures, and it’s an opportunity to recharge your energy. If you don’t have access to air conditioning, use fans and take cool showers to lower your body temperature. You can also indulge in frozen treats like fruit popsicles or frozen yogurt for a delightful and cooling experience.

6. Stay Insect-Safe

Summer is the peak season for insects like mosquitoes, ticks, and flies. Protect yourself from insect bites by using insect repellent sprays or lotions. Wear long-sleeved, light-colored clothing, and consider using mosquito nets when sleeping outdoors. Keep your living and sleeping areas clean and free from standing water to discourage mosquito breeding. If you plan to spend time in nature, check for ticks and remove them promptly to prevent tick-borne illnesses.

Conclusion

Embracing the summer season while prioritizing our health and well-being is entirely possible with a little preparation and care. By staying hydrated, protecting our skin from the sun, consuming nourishing foods, and being mindful of our outdoor activities, we can have a memorable and enjoyable summer while minimizing health risks. So, go out there, savor the sun safely, and make the most of this vibrant season!

“I am a spiritual being in a divine universe.

All events and lessons in life are for my benefit.

I have reverence and gratitude for all that is.

I am quiet, still, and calm, while retaining presence of mind.

I use all perceived adversity to gain strength.

~ Roger Thunderhands Gilbert from Listen to the Wind Speak from the Heart

Walking a spiritual path is a responsibility that we take on willingly. Understanding life is no longer just about ourselves and what we want, rather, we become a part of the whole moving in unison together towards one common goal. “What is that goal?”, you ask. To become better human beings with more love, compassion, patience for ourselves and for others. Above all, I have learned from my teachers to Be Happy.

As easy as this sounds, it can one of the most challenging things we do in our lifetime. There is interference from so many places that prevent us from being happy, connected, and in love. Identify those things that distract you: TV, addictions, social media, news outlets, toxic relationships, and whatever else you can identify in your life that is holding you back. Come into right relation with these things, purify your mind-body-spirit-soul and re-connect with your true nature. This is the wish of all prayers, mantras, and medicine songs for all living beings. They are the sacred thread that connects all of life, as one, to source.

What will you do today? I hope you will walk with your prayer in your heart. I hope you will sing to the Earth in gratitude for the life she gives us. I hope you will tell someone in your life you love them. I hope you love yourself. I hope you will be happy today.

What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is an amazing herb that comes from the roots of the withania somnifera plant. This plant helps improve health and wellbeing in many ways. Have you heard of this amazing herb before? Let’s explore the benefits of ashwaghanda.

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic Medicine in India to promote optimal health. (1) The name Ashwagandha translates from Sanskrit as “ashva” meaning horse, and “gandha” meaning smell. So, quite simply it is the plant that smells like a horse and it is believed that this herb gives the vigor and strength of a horse. As bold as this claim may be, there is a large body of research that supports this powerful statement.

Before we dive into the benefits of this herb, what is an adaptogenic herb? Adaptogens are natural plant compounds that promote homeostasis and balance in the body. They are famously known for reducing stress, anxiety, and regulating endocrine function. They also help promote energy metabolism, immune system strength, and improve mental clarity. Adaptogens accomplish this action by regulating endocrine glands function. If this important endocrine function is not working properly, it can lead to adrenal fatigue, hyper and hypothyroid issues, and low libido. This will easily ruin any day or evening! Below we will examine 4 benefits of this plant.

1: Ashwagandha May Lower Blood Sugar Levels

Diabetes type 2 is a modern epidemic. As of 2020, 9.4% of the American population has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. That is 30.3 million Americans!

Individuals who have type 2 diabetes are constantly trying to manage high blood sugar levels. Additionally, those with pre-diabetes have higher than normal blood sugar levels that need to be addressed.

Lifestyle modifications are essential to manage and lower blood sugar levels. This includes regular diet and exercise to manage glucose levels. Ashwaghanda is a natural alternative that can help manage this condition. Studies have found that Ashwagandha can lower blood sugar in both healthy people and those with diabetes. (2,3). Multiple studies of individuals with type 2 diabetes found that supplementation of Ashwaghanda led to lower fasting blood sugar levels and reduced insulin sensitivity, which was on par with patients on diabetes medication (2,4). Exciting findings to say the least!

2: Ashwagandha Reduces Cortisol Levels

Cortisol is a very important hormone for human health intimately connected to the adrenal glands. Adrenal glands release cortisol in a cyclical fashion with the highest levels being released in the morning and then decreasing throughout the day. They are responsible for maintaining steady blood sugar levels in the body throughout the day. Cortisol is also a very potent anti-inflammatory hormone. This can be seen by its use in modern medicine for its common pharmaceutical name cortisone. (5)

Modern stressors cause the body to be in a constant state of stress which releases more cortisol. This response mobilizes blood sugar and energy during the fight or flight response. This has been coined as the “stress hormone”. When experiencing chronic stress and anxiety, this hormone is constantly being released.

Symptoms of chronically elevated cortisol may include:

depression

weight gain (especially in the face and upper back “buffalo hump”)

central obesity

acne

swelling in the hands and feet

low libido

high blood pressure

Insomnia. (6)

As you can see maintaining balanced cortisol levels is very important for health and longevity.

There have been numerous placebo-controlled human studies that have found Ashwagandha supplementation to reduce stress and cortisol levels as well. In one study, 64 adults with chronic stress took either a placebo or 300 mg full-spectrum Ashwagandha extract twice daily for 60 days. After 60 days, those who took the Ashwagandha experienced reductions in stress and anxiety as measured by a questionnaire, as well as significant reductions in serum cortisol levels. (7)

3: Ashwagandha May Improve Brain Health & Cognition

One of the more surprising benefits of Ashwagandha is its ability to improve cognitive health. For many years, this plant has been used in Ayurveda for the purposes of enhancing memory and cognition. This is important because as we age, our mental faculties tend to decline, a process known as age-related cognitive decline. This can lead to trouble remembering things, and can for some people can even progress into several neurological diseases including Alzheimer’s, disease and dementia.

Recent human studies examining the effects of this herb on human cognition have found exciting results. These results include improvements in memory, attention, processing speed, and executive function in those suffering from mild cognitive impairment. Some studies have even observed neuroprotective benefits for those with amyloid-beta plaque buildups which are early warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease. (8,9)

Another significant study found improved motor function and increased neurotransmitter levels in regions of the brain damaged by Parkinson’s Disease after 28 days of supplementation with Ashwagandha. (10)

4: Ashwagandha’s effects on Hormones

Thanks to its ability to regulate hormones and fight free radicals and reactive oxygen species, Ashwagandha can help increase libido, fertility, strength, and energy. More specifically this herb balances testosterone, thyroid hormone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle stimulating hormone. Most studies on the hormonal effects of this herb have been performed on male subjects, however, a few studies have been targeted towards female subjects as well.

In one placebo-controlled study, healthy men age 18-50 underwent a resistance training regimen. Those who took Ashwagandha were found to experience greater benefits in muscle strength, muscle size, fat loss, and an increase in serum testosterone levels when compared to those in the placebo group. (11)

Another study of 75 infertile male subjects showed significant increases in testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and prolactin. (12)

Regarding its usefulness to women, Ashwagandha is shown to have inhibitory effects towards estrogen receptors in estrogen sensitive cancer cell lines. Although this is not a hormonal boosting effect it is very important as a potential cancer prevention regimen. (13) It also has positive and regulating effects on menopause. A study of 52 menopausal women showed improvement in menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and quality of life. It is theorized that these improvements were due to its endocrine regulating functions. (14)

Lastly, this plant has positive benefits for thyroid function in men and women. Multiple studies have found that Ashwagandha increases thyroid activity in hypothyroidal male & female subjects. It specifically increased circulating T4 levels without a rise in T3. In addition to this multiple studies have found supplementation with this herb is effective for hypothyroidism. (15, 16, 17)

Dosage

Ashwagandha has traditionally been used as a powder and can be added to your favorite warm milk with honey. The recommended dosage for dried powder taken this way is 3-6 grams daily.

If taken as an extract in capsules or tincture, the recommended dosage is 300-500mg daily.

Potential Side Effects

Ashwagandha is considered safe when used within the recommended dosage. However, there are a few potential side effects to be aware of.

In high doses Ashwagandha can cause nausea and diarrhea.

Temporary hyperthyroidism can be an effect of Ashwagandha supplementation. One patient developed thyrotoxicosis after increasing their supplementation of this herb. The report does not note the dosage used, however, other studies have shown that this herb can increase the levels of circulating thyroid hormones. The patient’s symptoms resolved spontaneously after discontinuation of the herb. (18)

Cautions

Any pregnant or nursing women should not take Ashwagandha without first consulting their doctor.

Since this herb increases thyroid function, it should not be used by individuals with hyperthyroidism.

Ashwagandha has a mild sedative effect so it should not be used with alcohol, sedatives, or anti-anxiety drugs.

Final Thoughts

Ashwagandha is a very well studied and widely accessible herb. It is also a powerful adaptogen with wide reaching benefits for human health. If used responsibly and within the appropriate dosage range it is a good tool with many different applications. As with any herbal supplement research multiple sources regarding its use and safety, and consult a qualified health care practitioner before using this or any other plant.

If the daily stress continues to build up, it is good to develop a daily practice that will help you disconnect and […]

If the daily stress continues to build up, it is good to develop a daily practice that will help you disconnect and can be an anchor to get you through difficult times. Creating personal altar space in your home can relieve some of these stresses.

An altar is a wonderful way to create a sacred space and de-stress or disconnect from daily activities. It is also a great way to unwind at the end of the day. “Altar” in Latin refers to a raised, sacred space like a table that a person uses in times of reflection. It can be used in a religious setting or help inspire meditation and visualization practices. I like to think of my altar space as a safe space where anything is allowed, without judgment or fear. It is a place where I can be completely honest with myself about how I feel and what I need to do in that moment.

Using an altar in this way can help you better understand how your inner landscape ticks. You can begin to recognize emotions and thought patterns that were previously hidden from you, develop creativity, find clarity, and find solutions to problems. Let’s explore ways to create your personal altar space.

Creating Personal Altar Space: Step One

Finding an Altar Space in Your Home

Step one in setting up your personal altar space is to think about your home and where it would be best to set up your altar, based on the activity and location of the space. It is best to choose a private area, perhaps by a window where natural light can enter, or by a door that opens to the natural world. If you have a space in mind, try it out to see how you feel there. Tune into your breath as you sit there to reflect on the space. What could you bring to the altar to focus on your mission? What do you need from your altar to show up on a daily basis?

When you are sitting here, pay attention to all the emotions or visualizations that might arise. Is there a message about the space you need to hear? Is there any color associated with the space? Is there any stone, plant, image, or object that your altar needs? What size table do you need? Over time, you can adjust and shift the energy on your altar as you learn more about working with your sacred space.

Remember to be kind, compassionate and gentle with yourself. There is no wrong or right way to set up your sacred altar space. There is only one rule of thumb you should keep in mind when setting up your space: Clean up the clutter. This is a place where magic can happen, but to support this process, it is important to clear up the clutter. A 2017 study published in the journal Current Psychology found that clutter and chaos in your physical environment could be linked to life dissatisfaction.

So clutter be gone! And you are well on your way to creating a beautiful transformative space that nourishes your soul and brings abundant blessings to your life.

Stones: The Bones of the Earth

Stones, crystals and precious stones are the bones of the earth. They have been used here in healing methods to convey a sense of well-being, insight and wisdom that can help change people or certain situations. They are considered timekeepers of the earth and in some cultures are called grandfathers. Just like us, each stone has a unique gift or power that we can share with ourselves when we allow them into our hearts.

They can also serve as a representation of something specific you want to work with or cultivate in your life. For example, Jet helps dispel negative thoughts and provide a protective shield around its user. Rose Quartz is known as a heart stone that brings about a deeper healing of the heart through unconditional love, trust and compassion. It is a great stone when you feel isolated from others and are unable to move past heart issues. Clear Quartz can bring balance to your altar. Citrine helps absorb negative energy and is associated with joy and positive possibilities.

You can also take a medicine walk in nature to see if any stone is calling out to you. Stones are happy to help us at different stages of our lives. Before you walk, say a prayer and make an intention about something you need in your life. During your medicine walk, pay attention to the subtle voices in nature. You can hear these whispers with your heart. If a stone is tugging at your heart or talking to you, ask it if it is okay to take it home.

How can you tune into a stone? Place the stone in your left hand, your receiving side, calm your mind and listen with your heart. You can ask the stone questions such as: “What is your gift?” “Where do you come from?” “How do you want me to work with you”? “Do you have a message for me?” “Where do you want me to place you?” The answer to these questions will help you to begin working with stones on your altar and in your life.

Plant Medicine: Soul Nourishment

Plants occupy a special home in my heart. They carry sacred and powerful medicine, which can help to cure illnesses of a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual nature. As with all sacred things, the key is to open the mind and heart to their healing powers.

Some plants are considered “Master Teachers” and are to be regarded and used with great reverence. Many of these plants have been used for thousands of years in sacred rituals. People were dependent on them to have visions, to lead their people, to heal their sick and to communicate with the spirits. Keep in mind, all plants hold healing powers and valuable teachings.

Obtaining plants from your region is a great way to integrate herbal medicine into your life. Feel free to explore the healing properties and stories associated with the plant of your choice. Learning to make herbal teas from them will add an extra level of connection when you begin to feel how the plant interacts in your body. As an herbalist and plant lover, I am primarily reliant on my plant medicine remedies for my personal healing and to potentiate my altar space.

A word of caution: research the plant you are taking thoroughly for its contraindications and make sure it is not toxic; some plants are not meant to be ingested, or should be taken under proper guidance; and other plants may have specific contraindications.

Meditation and Visualization: Soul and Mind Work

Meditation means calming the mind from the outside world, opening up to your inner landscape through mindfulness and peace. Breathing techniques are a valuable tool that can help calm the mind and create silence. They have been used over time by many ancient cultures to connect with “spirit”, “creator”, or your “higher self.”

Breathing: Connection to Self

Breathing can attune you to your inner landscape, where you can find peace and acceptance for yourself and others. This alone is a powerful reason to set up an altar space. Studies have shown that breathing can relieve anxiety, improve sleep, improve mental clarity and mood. Some even claim that certain breathing techniques can help manage chronic pain.

The beauty of breathing is that there is no wrong way to do it. Start by tuning into your breath as you inhale and exhale. Pay attention to where your breath feels blocked in your body to bring more awareness to this area. You can experiment with slow, fast and intermittent breathing to see which one you prefer. If you need to start with some guided breathing exercises there are plenty online that you can find beneficial.

Language: Honey for the Soul

Keeping an inspiring book close to your altar is a great way to focus on positive messages. Language is known for its powerful effect on shaping your perception of the world and what kind of input you can bring to your world. Selecting a poem or quote at the beginning of your meditative time in front of your altar can help set the right framework and intent, so you can inspire and nurture your soul.

While setting up an altar can be intimidating at first glance, it can be a fun activity. Collecting objects in nature, remembering things you have forgotten, finding new inspirations and making new resolutions is a good medicine for the soul.

In Conclusion:

I hope this will inspire you to either reignite your relationship with your daily practices or to get an exciting new practice started in your life. Like with everything, the more you practice the more it will become a part of your daily ritual and you will gain more benefit from it.

Be patient with yourself. Be kind. All is good.

While sitting at home, watching the snowfall outside, I was wondering what kind of soup I could make to help warm me […]

While sitting at home, watching the snowfall outside, I was wondering what kind of soup I could make to help warm me up and give my immune system a boost. During my search, I came across a delicious pumpkin soup recipe that I decided to try. This steaming soup is packed with all the benefits of pumpkin and spices. It’s interesting to note that ongoing scientific research suggests that a chemical compound found in Asian pumpkins can improve insulin levels and lower blood sugar pressure. This aligns with Chinese tradition, where pumpkin is believed to be especially beneficial for people with diabetes symptoms.

Chinese Medicine Application

This dish is beneficial for individuals with Spleen deficiency or for moisturizing the Lungs and Large Intestine.

Ingredients:

10-12 ounces pumpkin or winter squash (about 2 cups when cubed)

6 whole cloves

2 1/2 cups vegetable or chicken stock

2 tablespoons vegetable oil, I prefer olive oil

1 small onion, diced

2 to 3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced

1 (1 to 2 inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced

1/2 cup coconut milk (no guar coconut milk)

A pinch of salt

A pinch of pepper

1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, stems removed and discarded

Directions:

Seed, peel, and chop the pumpkin into 1-inch cubes.

Combine the pumpkin, cloves, and stock in a pot. Bring to boil, lower the heat to low and simmer for about 20 minutes.

Add the onion, garlic, and ginger. Cook until the onions are translucent and soft (about 5 minutes).

When the pumpkin is done, remove the cloves from the broth (they will float on top of the liquid).

Combine the pumpkin mixture, the onion mixture, and the coconut milk, using a hand blender to whip it into a smooth puree. If you don’t have a hand blender, use a blender or food processor, working in batches if necessary. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Sprinkle the green cilantro on top of the soup for a flavorful and colorful garnish.

Especially good for:

Eating in the fall and winter, warming cold hands and feet. Also, pumpkin dishes are particularly helpful for people concerned about diabetes, beautifying the skin, constipation, or preventing prostate cancer, atherosclerosis, or gastric ulcers.

Themes and Variations:

Add different vegetables to this soup, such as yam, celery, or carrot, cut into 1-inch pieces; simmer them along with the pumpkin. Other types of milk, if you prefer. Canned pumpkin can work in a pinch if you don’t have fresh pumpkin available.

I hope you enjoy this delicious recipe! Stay healthy, everyone.

This is a letter I would like to bring light to that a dear friend of mine gave me over Christmas. I feel it is valuable to share with each other bits and pieces of our life, whatever those may be. I see that as we get older, it can be easy to feel like we no longer have a voice and that some of our stories will die with us . In this culture, in particular, we don’t listen to our elder’s life experiences as much as we should. So, on this note, I hope you will enjoy reading someone else’s story. ~ Joaquina

The following has been written by Margie, born in 1947 (with her permission I publish this):

I don’t think I have ever shared my own spiritual journey like this before but I’m in the gray zone now and memory can be elusive.

We are living in very challenging times, in fact, the most challenging of my lifetime so far.

Until shortly before Brady, my son, was born I spent much of my life as an activist for civil rights, peace, and justice especially during Vietnam/Nuclear disarmament times.

I always felt that what I believed to be just and inherently good would be what prevailed if we persevered. And, little by little, progress was made during those times and since. That is, until recently, because today it feels like hatred could win. Love, compassion, and peace is not the driving force behind much of what’s coming to fruition.

I am old now. I no longer have the energy, stamina, and strength I once did for political activism and yet I can’t just do nothing. My purpose in life has long been to become the peace I wish to see in the world, and in turn, a peace bearing ambassador in the world.

It doesn’t matter which side of the political divide we are on. Some listen to the news and want to react with anger towards our President, others want to go after the Democratic party, not to mention people of color or people of different religions. My bias is showing. Hatred is running deep in this country and around the world.

But there’s much more at stake now than most of us were aware of when activism was ignited on the streets decades ago. We are rapidly destroying our most precious resource that we depend on for our very life: Planet Earth. So even though there is more to divide us than before, these issues touch all of us deeply. This is our world today and this is why I am writing this letter. I have to share my thoughts and what is in my heart. This is what I can do. I don’t have the agility to get to the streets or show up to sessions in Congress, or to attend meetings and so I write.

There are two quotes that are helping me deal with what is going on in my heart.

“But I say to you to heal, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you…” Luke 6:27, 28

“You can use hatred as a weapon, but you cannot use hate to defeat hate.”~MLK

I am empathetic and highly sensitive and have always been a sponge for other people’s pain-even strangers on the street. I used to hold on to all that pain inside of me. I didn’t know what to do with it or how to take care of myself in the process. It was crippling.

But here’s what I’ve learned: Feeling peace, and becoming peace and love is how I can contribute to the greater good. When I take on other’s pain, as it passes through me I don’t hold onto it now. Instead, I cradle it in peace and love, transforming it so that as is leaves me it now holds the energy of peace and love as I do.

If others are coming at me from a place of hate, I now understand that that hate comes from a place of pain. Wrap that hate in love, compassion, and peace and let that be the energy that flows out from me to them. Hate can come at me when it is generated in the world. It doesn’t have to be directed at me personally for me to be a recipient of it. I’ve come to understand that whatever part of that hate/harm reaches me, I have a responsibility to do my best to transform it. Every bit counts.

This is my purpose-to be part of our collective healing.

I still have a glimmer of hope that good will win out. Hope is one the energies that contributes to creating peace. Throughout the course of every day we are given moments to choose to serve the greater good, or not. I know how much easier said than done this is. Slowly, but surely, I am getting better at it. Intention matters.

My prayer for myself and for all of you who I hold dear this Holiday season is that we all choose to serve the greater good in those difficult and dark moments. The little things we do add up and ultimately can make a difference.

Peace and love

Margie

(Thank you for sharing dear Margie!)
